A MEMBER OF THE G . L . OF SCOTLAND . ••PALMAM QUI MERUIT FERAT . " To the Editor of the Freemason .
SIR , —In the report of the anniversary festival of the St . George ' s Lodge of Instruction , Greenwich , g iven in your issue of the 6 th instant , it is stated " That this , the oldest lodge of instruction in this locality , possesses several able instructors , and that most of the Masons in the neighbourhood freely admit that here they gained the knowledge so essential to good working . " The former part of this statement is perfectly true , the latter part quite
the reverse , it or some years past the number of attendants have been so small that frequently it has not been possible to hold a meeting , and the " able instructors " of whom you speak have only been conspicuous by their absence—indeed so much so , that the remark has been common amongst those seeking light that " it is of no use going to the St . George ' s , as there is no one there that can teach anything . "
I should not have trespassed on your space , but that I have a strong belief in the quotation which heads this letter , and that I consider that those who do really devote their time and attention to promoting the study of Freemasonry shall not be deprived of their laurels by those who are either too indolent or too ignorant to undertake that duty . I am , Sir , yours fraternally , ONE WHO KNOWS . Greenwich , May 8 th , 1871 .
( To the Editor of The Freemason . ) DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , — Seeing in your issue of last Saturday , in the notice of the new Grand Officers , an assertion that the new Grand Chaplain , the Rev . J . Studholme Brownrigg , was wetland favourably known in the province of Oxford , allow me as a member of that province to inform you that the new Grand Chaplain has no connection with it beyond an honorary membership of the Apollo University Lodge , conferred upon him when occupying the chair of the Isaac Newton
Lodge in the sister University of Cambridge , to which province he therefore belongs . As the Senior Grand Chaplain is a member of the province of Oxford , the honours of the Grand Chaplaincy are thus evenly divided between the two universities . I am , dear Sir and Brother , Faithfully and fraternally yours , AN OXFORD PAST GRAND DEACON . Monday , May 9 .
ON SUBORDINATION IN THE HIGHER DEGREES .
( To the Editor of The Freemason . ) DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , —I have watched with painful interest the progress of this discussion , and in common with those who cherish a sincere desire to promote a true Masonic spirit in all that pertains to the working of the A . and A . Rite , have been greatly grieved at the unfortunate feeling which has been displayed by your anonymous correspondents . I certainly do think that the seriousness of the question demands that every one who ventures to advocate either side of it should declare their names and addresses , and in the hope that you may agree with me , I express the opinion , and ask for the insertion of this communication in your next issue . Yours fraternally , ' jS . Kpuv Aa /? e , Kal ne 8 ov \ e 5 ei <; .
P . S . —I would very much like to sec in your columns , for the enlightenment of those brethren who are at present unacquainted with the matter , a notice of the origin of the Supreme Grand Councils 33 ° here . and elsewhere . It would astound many , and interest all .
We arc informed that H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , H . S . H . the Prince John of Glucksburg , and many other eminent brethren , have expressed their great satisfaction at the style and execution of Bro . S . Rosenthal ' s splendid painting , the " Inauguration of Freemasons' Hall , " which is now on view in the Grand Officers' Room , in that building . His Royal Highness picked out several of the portraits in the picture at once on the occasion of his visit to
the hall on Monday last . THE Fifteen Sections will be worked by Bro . G . W . Verry , S . W . 554 , on Wednesday next , the 17 th inst ., at the Confidence Lodge of Instruction , held at Bro . Forstei s Railway Tavern , Fenchurch-strcet , commencing at seven o ' clock .

JERUSALEM CHAPTER OF ANTIQUITY MANCHESTER , H . M . K . H .
Who or by whom these degrees were introduced first into Manchester does not seem quite clear . They were evidently , however , organised by Bro . John Hassall , who was connected with a Rotheram Conclave , which practised the high grades in 1780 . From the old York
Conclave of Redemption of seven degrees , the Grand Lodge of All England at York adopted the Templar , and granted the "Jerusalem " warrant in 1786 . This was confirmed by Bro . Thomas Dunckerley in 1795 , who some years previously had been elected Grand Master of the " Seven Steps of Chivalry . " From 18 30 to 1 S 35 the degrees were all conferred on Good Friday , at the Craven Inn ,
Millerstreet , but the Iv . H . was then only given to Templar Commanders , and all the degrees fell into abeyance . In 1845 they were revived by members of the Bath , Bristol , French , Scottish and Irish rites , and Bro . Walter Lawrence , Prince of the Royal Secret , and subsequently 33 " of Scotland , and 90 ° Misraim , held the chief chair . Again the degrees fell into abeyance , but the K . H . was revived
for commanderies in 1 S 63 , and all the circulars that year bore the K . H . emblems . A more formal revival took place in 1 S 64-5 by brethren who were members both of the old chapters of 1835 and ' 845 , with several new members ; but owing to a sensitive wish not to interfere with a rite of modern jntroduction , the matter was not pushed . Recent events , however , have led to the chapter being
entirely refurnished and reorganised on its ancient , timeimmemorial basis , and a meeting was held at the Manchester Masonic Hall on Saturday , the 29 th April . For several reasons it is unadvisable to give a full report of this influential and respectable meeting . Several candidates having received a number of miscellaneous degrees were admitted Knights Rosse Crucisand Knights Kadosh
( with the old English degree of Grand Inspector , and constituted 66 ° Misraim , under the ancient . power of R . G . C . of Ancient rite ) . An old P . E . C . of the Jerusalem . Conclave of Templars was installed M . W . S . and R . G . C ., and advanced to the degree of Grand Prince and Keeper of the Ancient Royal Secrets . Bro . Win , Ashworth , of Rochdale , accepted the office of Treasurer , and Bro . Tohn
Yarker that of Chancellor . Three knights were admitted as joining members , including Bro . Commander Charles Scott , R . N ., J . P ., Tyrone , whose certificate of Rose Cmch and Ne Plus Ultia , signed in 1863 by the Rev . Sir Knt . John Huyshe , Deputy G . M . of Templars , was exhibited to the meeting . The following Sir Knights were unanimously admitted honorary members : —Geo . Parfitt ,
R . G . C . of the Camp of Antiquity , Bath , and Morton Edwards , R . G . C . of Holy Cross Chapter and 33 * of tho American Sanctuary . Officers were appointed , fees settled and the following routine of meetings ordered : —K . H ., March ; K . T . Priest , June ; sundries , September ; Rosce Crucis , December . The chapter is now flourishing in members , furniture , and funds , and as in 1845 , the sister
kingdoms are well represented ; the Irish brigade numbering amongstits members the following Sir Knt » . K . H ., all being eligible under the Constitutions of the Emerald Isle , whilst few English high grade Masons are : —James Flynn , I . G . ; Andrew Fitzpatrick , C . of G . ; W . Doolin ; G . D . Powell , M . D . ; Patrick Graham , AT . A . LL . D . ' , Joseph Wonfor , R . ; Henry Cochrane . —Communicated .
HER MAJESTV has intimated her intention ot opening the new St . Thomas ' s Hospital in the latter part of June . HOLLOWAY ' S PIXLS . —Epidemic Diseases . —The alarming increase of deaths from influenza and bronchitis should be a warning to every one to subdue at once any
irregularity tending towards disease . Holloway ' s Pills should now be in every household , to rectify all impure states of the blood , to remedy weakness , and to overcome impaired general health . Nothing can be simpler than tho instructions for taking this concctingmedicine , nothing more efficient than its cleansing powers , nothing more
harmless than ils vegetable ingredients . Holloway ' s is the best medicine during the sickly season , when deprcsiing heat or intolerable miasma are frequently deranging the health , and daily exposing thousands , through their negligence , to disease , which discomforts , if it foils to endanger , life . —[ Advt , ]
