them very much to London brethren , and that when any departure from this took place it was rarely that any position higher than Sword Bearer was given , for which there was formerly some excuse , inasmuch till of late years there was no Prov . Grand Lodge of Middlesex . He trusted that now a new era had commenced , and that this course would be continued .

In accordance with the suggestion contained in the letter of the Prov . Grand Treasurer , which had been read , Bro . Radway proposed and Bro . VVilkinson seconded a resolution for a grant of one guinea towards a fund for providing a complete set of Grand Lodge clothing- to be presented to the D . P . G . M . Bro . Wilton represented to the lodge the case of a

member who is severely afflicted , and solicited the assistance of the brethren in obtaining admission for one cf his children to the Royal Alasonic Institution for Girls . He proposed a resolution to that effect , which was seconded by the Treasurer and carried . Mr . Richard Sidwell and Mr . John A . Fisher , who had been previously admitted by ballot , were initiated by the

VV . M ., who performed the ceremony for the first time , in a style which would have done credit to a P . M . of long experience . The symbolism of the working tools was explained by Bro . Ames , and Bro . Dr . Hopkins , as usual , gave the charge . A favourable ballot was taken for Mr . C . E . Ponting as a candidate for initiation . In accordance with a proposition placed on the agenda paper by Bro .

Ashley , he proposed the appointment of a P . M . as permanent Secretary , in addition to an Assistant Secretary , under whose superintendence uniformity may be maintained in the manner of keeping the records . He stated that the subject had been well considered by the Permanent Committee with a favourable result . During the discussion which ensued , in which Bros . Braham , T . Wilton , and others took

part , there appeared to be considerable diversity of opinion . The result , however , was the adoption of the following resolution , proposed by Bro . Ashley and seconded by Bro . Braham : "That a P . M . b ; appointed as Permanent Secretary , with an Assistant Secretary , to be appointed annually as heretofore . " Bro . Ashley announced that a

new lodge would shortly be consecrated at Wellington , which he hoped would be the last in the province for some considerable time , and recommended a full attendance of the brethren , especially of such as have not already witnessed the ceremony . No other business offering the lodge was closed .

NOTTINGHAM . —Newstead Lodge ( No 47 ) . — The last meeting previous to the summer vacation was held at the Masonic Hall on Tuesday , the 2 nd inst . The VV . M ., Bro . J . Toplis , occupied the chair , ably supported by the brethren : Bros . J . Derry , l . P . M . ; G . Chapman , S . W . ; E . C . Patchitt , j . W . ; H . Vickers , S . D . ; A . J . Barber , f . About sixty-five brethren were present , including the following visitors : Bros . Goldsmith , 1909 ( the Mayor ) ; Alderman l ' urney , 1435 ; Stevens , GSi ; Hatherley , P . M ., P . B . G . P . ; Rice , W . M . 1405 ; Harrison , W . M . 506 ; Manton , VV . M . 10 S 5 ; Greenhury , 304 ; and Butler , P . M . 1435 . There being a candidate for initiation , the whole of the ceremony of the First Degree , including the lecture on the

tracing board , was most admirably rendered , and afforded the greatest interest , not only to the candidate but to the brethren . After closing the lodge , the brethren adjourned to supper , which was well served in the large hall by Bro . Simpson , 47 , Steward to the Masonic Club . The cloth drawn , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were

given and duly honoured . The toast of "The Provincial Grand Lodge Officers " was proposed , coupled with the name of Bro . Hatherley . In responding , Bro . Hatherley said he had known and studied Masonry for a number of years , but could not remember ever seeing mere efficient working . The Newstead Lodge he considered almost , if not quite , perfect ;

and as it is the mother lodge of the province , he regarded it as being now what it should be—a pattern for the other lodges in the province . Bros . Lawrence , 1909 , and A . R . Watson , 47 , gave some fine selections of music on the piano and violin . Bros . Parker , Sutton , and Greenbury delighted the brethren with some excellent singing , and with the ordinary toasts , a most enjoyable evening was concluded .

DARLINGTON — Restoration Lodge ( No . ill ) - —A meeting of the above lodge was held on Thursday , the 27 th ult .. at the Freemasons' Hall . Present : Bros . R . Luck , W . M . ; J . J . Wilkes , S . W . ; T . Bowman , J . W . ; R . A . Luck , Treas . ; G . J . Wilson

Five musical brethren , members of the cathedral choir , were present , and wc very much doubt if the music in this lodge can be equalled by any other in the kingdom .

C ., after which Bro . James Dawson , P . M ., took the chair , and passed Bro . VV . B . Akerman to the Second Degree , and this concluding the business of the evening , " Hearty good wishes " were expressed bv the

visitors , and the lodge was closed in peace and harmony . A pleasant time was passed at the social board , during which the newly-elected Prov . G . Treas ., Bro . J . E . Lees , P . M . 645 , and Bro . George Parker Brockbank , P . P . G . D ., put in an appearance , and were cordially welcomed . The healths of both brethren were proposed by Bro . VV . Nicholl , P . M ., and drank by the brethren , and , in response , Bro . Geo . P . Brockbank gave a resume of his Masonic

career , from which it appeared he was initiated into the Order in 1 S 4 G , and was installed VV . M . of his Mother Lodge in 1 S 49 , and appointed P . G . D . in 1 S 72 . Our much esteemed brother is very popular in this province , and is never tired of working for the welfare of Masonic charity , which is testified by one of the most honourable distinctions any Mason can possess , viz ., a charity jewel with twenty-one bars , that adorns his breast . COCKERMOUTH . —Skiddaw Lod ge ( No . 1002 ) . —The regular meeting of this lodge was held in the Masonic Hall , Station-street , on Tuesday evening the tst inst . The lodge was opened in due form by the I . P . M ., Bro . T . C . Robinson . After all formal business had been done , the Secretary , Bro . Mason presented a large portrait of Bro . VV . F . Lamonby , P . M ., in full Alasonic Craft

clothing , which had been sent to him b y Mrs . Lamonby for the lodge . The l . P . M . in returning thanks in the name of the lodge , moved that a vote of thanks be sent to . Mrs . Lamonby , which was seconded by Bro . Peacock , S . W ., ' and unanimously carried . 'The lodge was then closed in due form with good harmony , according to ancient custom .

MANCHESTER . —Shakespeare Lod ge ( No . 1009 ) . —The regular meeting of this lodge was held on Monday , the 1 st inst ., at the Freemasons' Hall , Cooperstreet . At this meeting the installation of W . M . should have taken place , but owing to the absence of the VV . M . elect , Bro . J . L . Hine , P . P . S . G . W ., who is cruising in the Mediterranean for the benefit of his health , it was

The lodge being duly closed , the brethren adjourned to the Amherst Arms Hotel , where they partook of a splendid banquet . 'The lodge is to be particularl y congratulated upon having soeminenta W . VV . M ., who performed the ceremony for the first time , in a style which would have done credit to a P . M . of long experience . The symbolism of the working tools was explained by Bro . Ames , and Bro . Dr . Hopkins , as usual , gave the charge . A favourable ballot was taken for Mr . C . E . Ponting as a candidate for initiation . In accordance with a proposition placed on the agenda paper by Bro .

Ashley , he proposed the appointment of a P . M . as permanent Secretary , in addition to an Assistant Secretary , under whose superintendence uniformity may be maintained in the manner of keeping the records . He stated that the subject had been well considered by the Permanent Committee with a favourable result . During the discussion which ensued , in which Bros . Braham , T . Wilton , and others took

part , there appeared to be considerable diversity of opinion . The result , however , was the adoption of the following resolution , proposed by Bro . Ashley and seconded by Bro . Braham : "That a P . M . b ; appointed as Permanent Secretary , with an Assistant Secretary , to be appointed annually as heretofore . " Bro . Ashley announced that a

new lodge would shortly be consecrated at Wellington , which he hoped would be the last in the province for some considerable time , and recommended a full attendance of the brethren , especially of such as have not already witnessed the ceremony . No other business offering the lodge was closed .

NOTTINGHAM . —Newstead Lodge ( No 47 ) . — The last meeting previous to the summer vacation was held at the Masonic Hall on Tuesday , the 2 nd inst . The VV . M ., Bro . J . tracing board , was most admirably rendered , and afforded the greatest interest , not only to the candidate but to the brethren . After closing the lodge , the brethren adjourned to supper , which was well served in the large hall by Bro . Simpson , 47 , Steward to the Masonic Club . The cloth drawn , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were

given and duly honoured . The toast of "The Provincial Grand Lodge Officers " was proposed , coupled with the name of Bro . Hatherley . In responding , Bro . Hatherley said he had known and studied Masonry for a number of years , but could not remember ever seeing mere efficient working . The Newstead Lodge he considered almost , if not quite , perfect ;

and as it is the mother lodge of the province , he regarded it as being now what it should be—a pattern for the other lodges in the province . Bros . Lawrence , 1909 , and A . R . Watson , 47 , gave some fine selections of music on the piano and violin . Bros . Parker , Sutton , and Greenbury delighted the brethren with some excellent singing , and with the ordinary toasts , a most enjoyable evening was concluded .
