most sumptuous repast , presided over by the newly-VV . M ., Bro . Richard Male . During dinner the orchestra , under the direction of Mr . E . J . Roberts , of Cardiff , gave some excellent selections . After refreshment , the usual loyal , patriotic , and Masonic tossis were duly proposed and honoured . Bros . Hurman , Jones , Coleman , Dickson , Duncan , and others contributed to the musical enjoyment of the evening , Bro . Abraham presiding with his usual marked ability at the

piano . Bro . Richard Male is the seventh VV . M . of the Merlin Lodge , and a comparatively young Mason , and though the circumstances in which he found himself must have been trying to a more experienced and older Mason , it is but justice to him to sav that he was fully and completely in harmony with the occasion , and discharged his onerous duties in a manner well worthy of the traditions of the Merlin Lodge , and we heartily congratulate bim upon the brilliant success 0 : the meeting .

YORK . — Eboracum Lodge ( No . 1611 ) . —The monthly meeting of this lodge was held on Monday evening , when , in the absence of the VV . M ., the chair was occupied by Bro . T . B . Whytehead , P . M ., who was supported by Bros . J . S . Cumberland , P . M . ; G . Balmford , P . M ., Treas .: J . S . Rymer , VV . M . 23 G ; J . Kay , S . W . ; M . Millington , J . VV . ; T . Humphries , Asst . Sec ; and a number of other officers and brethren , together with several

visitors from the York Lodge ; Bro . Davis , of the Sligo Lodge , and ethers . A ' successful ballot was taken for a candidate , and also for Bro . t " . Slinger , 1 G 26 , as a joining member . Bro . S . J . Dalton was passed to the Degree of F . C , after which Bro . J . Horner was raised to the Degree of a Master Mason . Bro . Whytehead then presented to the lodge , on behalf of Bro . VV . 1 . Hughan , a copy of the " Directory of the Prov .

Grand Lodge of Cornwall for 1 SS 2 , " and , on behalf of Bro . R . F . Bower , of Keokuk , Iowa , the world-renowed Masonic collector , a beautiful medal lately struck and dedicated to all MascnJc bibliographers . Bro . Whytehead also presented a copy of tlie " History and Description of King ' s College O . apel , Cambridge , " by Henry Maiden ( 17 G 9 ) , in which occ-rsome interesting allusions to Freemasonry , and copies of the "' Transactions of the Grand Lodge and Grand

Chapter of Pennsylvania for 1 SS 1 . " The Secretary read a letter from Bro . G . F . Marwood , of Busby KE ' . I , thanking the lodge for a letter of sympathy which had been forwarded to him on the occasion of the death of his late father , Bro . G . Marwood , P . D . P . G . M . A letter from the Grand Secretary was also read , containing a decision of the Grand Registrar relative to the postponement of lodge meetings when the stated gatherings fall

upon publ . c holidays . Ihese were ordered to be placed upon the minutes . A telegram was read from the VV . M ., who was absent in Aberdeen , conveying " Hearty good wishes" to the lodge ; and a similar message was also read in a letter i . otn Bro . A . M . Broadley , at Tunis . The acting VV . M . also read a letter from Bro . A . G . Goodall , of New York , who is the representative of the Grand Lodge of England near the Grand Lodge of New

York , reporting the arrival in that city of Bro . Girling , of the Eboracum Lodge , who had taken letters of introduction to the United States , expressing his pleasure at receiving any members of 1611 , and intimating a hope that he should be able to visit York ere long . The lodge having been closed , the members met at refreshmer . t , and a social evening was passed .

In responding to the toast of The harl of Zetland and the Prov . Grand Lodge , " Bro . J . S . Cumberland , P . P . G . AVarden , gave a good report of the progress he had been able to make with the Earl ' s list for the Girls' Festival on Wednesday . It already amounted to a handsome sum , and he hcr . sd still to have additions to it . 'The Hull lodges had made most handsome votes , and North and East Yorkshire would , he hoped , be well represented .

EAST GRINSTEAD . —Sackville Lodge ( No . 1619 ) . —A regular meeting of this lodge was held on the 2 nd inst ., at the Crown Hotel . Present : Bros . E . A . Head , VV . M . ; Wm . Rudge , S . Lodge having been opened , the minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed . Bro . Wm . Rudge , S . VV ., was then unanimously elected W . M . fcr the ensuing year ; Bro . Heckford re-elected Treasurer ; and Bro . Sargeant re-elected Tyler . Three auditors were appointed . Bro . John G . Horsey , P . M ., next read the

bye-laws of the lodge , after Jwhich Bro . Davison , I . P . M ., gave notice of motion that a jewel be voted to Bro . Head on his retiring from office as VV . M . ; also , that the bye-laws be altered with reference to the dates of meeting and payment of subscriptions . Lodge labour being ended , the brethren afterwards spent a pleasant evening at

refreshment . SHOEBURYNESS . — St . Andrew ' s Lodge ( No . 1 S 17 ) . —The regular meeting of this young yet flourishing lodge was held on the 4 th inst ., at the Cambridge Hstsl . Bro . J . M . Farr , W . M ., was supported by

There was a good attendance of members , but the unsettled weather considerably reduced the number of visitors that usually honour this lodge with their presence . The lodo-e having been opened in due form , and the minutes of the " last meeting read and confirmed , Bros . Geo . Thomas and David Smith were raised to the Second Degree , the

lecture being most impressively delivered by the VV . M ., Bro . Farr . After some routine business was transacted , the lodge was duly closed in peace and harmony . At the refreshment table the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were ably proposed by the VV . M , " and heartily responded to ; and the brethren separated after spending a very instructive and agreeable evening .

CHAPEL-EN-LE-FRITH . —High Peak Lodge ( No . 1952 ) . —At a regular meeting of the above lodge , on Monday , the Sth insL , Bro . James Whitehead in the chair , it was proposed by Bro . Theobald Edward Jones , S . VV ., seconded by Bro . John Burton Boycott , S . D ., and unanimously resolved , ' " ' 'That this meeting ( composed of brethren of this lodge and representatives of the neighbouring lodges of Phcemx St . Ann , No . 1235 , and Peveril of the in

Peak , No . G 54 ) , being the first Masonic gatheringthe Province of Derbyshire since the recent horrible _ crime in Ireland , desires to record its profound horror , indignation , and grief at the foul and cruel assassinations of the late Lord Frederick Cavendish and Mr . Burke , and to express its deep and heartfelt sympathy and condolence with the Marquess of Hartington , the Provincial Grand Master , on the deplorable loss ' of such a noble and distinguished brother . "

SINCERITY LODGE ( No . 174 ) . —I he regular meeting of the above lodge was held , as usual , at the Three Nun ' s Hoiel , Aldgate , on Monday , the Sth inst . Present : Bros . J . S . Fraser , VV . M . ; VV . Fraser , S . VV . ; G . Jones , P . M ., J . VV . ; A . H . Brown , Deacon ; T . Jones , I . G . ; C . IT . Webb , P . M ., Preceptor ; H . J . Cant , Hon . Sec . ; Richardson , Stephens , and others .

Lodge was opened in due form , and Bro . Cant having submitted the minutes of the meeting held on the 1 st inst ., they were unanimously confirmed . Bro . Richardson as candidate was tested , and on lodge being advanced the ceremony of passing was really ably worked . Bro . Richardson next worked the First and Second Sections of the Second Lecturethe brethren assisting . 'The ceremony of

, closing the lodge in the Second Degree was carefully performed , and subsequently Bro . VV . Fraser was elected to preside over the lodge at its next meeting . The arrangement for working the Sections in this lodge were discussed , and it was arranged to work the Fifteen Section on Monday , the 5 th of June , so as to be clear of Bank Holiday . Bro .

G . H . Stephens has already consented to preside , and the list is being filled up . It is with great pleasure we mention the uniformly excellent working to be met with at this lodge , and which recommends it to seekers after Masonic instruction . To such Bro . P . M . Webb , Preceptor , offers a fraternal welcome .

CONFIDENCE LODGE ( No . 193 ) . —This old lodge has now quite established itself at Bro . Maidwell ' s comfortable hostelry , the Hercules Tavern , Leadenhallstreet , E . C , and held its usual meeting on Wednesday , the 3 rd inst . Bro . F . Sackett , was W . M ., and had the support of the following brethren : Bros . J . E . Fells , S . VV . ; J . Smith , J . VV . ; D . Moss , Preceptor ; T . J . Maidwell , P . M . ; S . Sinither , S . D . ; DeSay , J . D . ; Biddle , I . G . ; Saint , Morris ,

and others . The lodge was opened in due form , and the minutes of the last lodge meeting were submitted for confirmation . The ceremony of initiation was worked , Bro . Saint being candidate . Bro . Moss worked the First , Second , and Third Sections of the Lecture , the brethren assisting . Bro . Fells was duly elected VV . M . for the ensuing lodge meeting , and several announcements having been made lodge was closed and adjourned until the 10 th inst .

ISRAEL LODGE ( No . 205 ) . —At the last regular meeting , at Bro . Yetton's , - Rising Sun , Globe-road , E ., the chair was occupied by Bro . T . Loane . Present : Bros . VV . Richardson , S . Samson candidate . Bro . Job worked the First , Second , 'Third , and Fourth Sections of the Lecture , assisted by the brethren . Bro . S . Samson , 205 , was unanimously elected a member of the lodge , and Bro . Richardson was elected W . M . for the next lodge meeting , and lodge was closed .

UNITED PILGRIMS LODGE ( No . 507 ) . — A meeting of this lodge was held at the Surrey Masonic Hall , Camberwell , S . E ,, on Friday , the 5 th inst . Present : Bros . James Stevens , P . M . Hon . Preceptor , VV . M . ; H . M . Williams , S . W . ; IT . Goodwin , J . W . ; Richard Poore , S . D . ; C . IL Phillips , J . D . ; J . James , I . G . ; also Bros . R . Field , Henry Smith , F . Thurston , J . Bate , A . G .

White , A . Style , J . VV . Watts , J . B . Sarjeant , Lucas , Baxter , and others . The lod ^ e was opened and minutes were read . The First Section , the ceremony of initiation , with proofs of proficiency , and the charge ( by Bro . J . Bate ) , were rehearsed , and the Fourth Section was worked by the brethren . " Question time" was occupied in discussing

sundry points of ritual and ceremony ; and Uro . H . M . Williams having been elected W . M . for the ensuing week , when the lodge will work in the Second Degree , and Bro . Stevens ( the Preceptor ) will anticipate a portion of his forthcoming lecture on the second ceremony , the lodge was closed . VVe are pleased to notice the steady increase of attendance at this lodge of instruction .

YARBOROUGH LODGE ( No . 554 ) - —This old lodge met as usual on Tuesday last , at Bro . A . Walter's , Green Dragon 'Tavern , Stepney . Present Bros . Evans , VV . M . ; A . Ellingford , S . W . ; J . J . Berry , P . M ., J . VV . ; J . Andrews , P . M ., Preceptor ; VV . Cross , Sec . and S . D . ; G . IT . Stephens , J . D . ; 'Taylor , I . G ., and others . Lodge was duly opened , and after due preliminaries flic

ceremony of initiation was worked , Bro . Taylor , candidate . Lodge was subsequently opened in the Superior Degrees and closed down . Bro . Evans then retired from the chair in favour of Bro . Ellingford , who proceeded to work the initiation ceremony , Bro . Evans candidate . A good evening's work having been done , Bro . Evans again occupied the chair , and Bro . Ellingford was duly elected W . M .

for next I uesday . Bro . VV . Cross , the esteemed Honorary Secretary , then informed the brethren that he had considered the subject of his resignation , and after the very kind expressions from the brethren , he had determined to continue in his position of Secretary to the lodge of instruction . The announcement gave great satisfaction to all present , and lodge was closed in due form and adjourned .

DALHOUSIE LODGE ( No 860 ) . —This lodge met as usual on the gth inst ., at Bro . Smyth ' s , the Sisters Tavern , Pownall-road , Dalston . Present : Bros . Smyth , VV . M . ; Warden , S . VV . ; Edwards , J . W . ; Boyce , S . D . ; Marsh , J . D . ; Gosling , I . G . ; VV . H . Wallington , P . M . Preceptor ( whom all the brethren were pleased to welcome in the lodge after an absence of seven weeks through

illness ) , Bros . A . Clark , Jones , Brasted , Christian , Darnell , Holsworth , C . Lorkin , and others . Lodge was duly opened , and minutes submitted and confirmed . The ceremony of passing was worked , Bro . Holsworth having previously been tested and entrusted . Bro . Christian delivered a lecture on the tracing board , and the VV . M . worked the First Section of the Lecture , in which the

brethren assisted . Lodge was opened up and afterwards closed down in due form , whereupon Bro . Wardcll tyas elected W . M . for the ensuing lodge meeting . It was announced that the annual supper would take place on Friday , the 19 th inst ., when Bro . Burleton , W . M . SGo , will preside . Proceedings to commence at 7 . 30 p . m . precisely .

DORIC LODGE ( No . 933 ) . —This lodge met , as usual , on the 5 th inst ., at Bro . J . Clayton's , Duke ' s Head , 79 , VVhitechapel-road , E . Present : Bros . Loane , W . M . ; W . Richardson , S . VV . ; J . West , J . VV . ; VV . McDonald , S . D . ; G . T . Holdom , J . D . ; Musto , jun ., I . G . ; B . Cundick , P . M ., Preceptor ; VV . Musto , P . M ., Sec ; G . H . Stephens , J . T . K . Job , J . Clayton , and others . Lodge was opened in due form , and the minutes of the

previous lodge meeting were submitted and confirmed . The VV . M . then gave a very able rendering of the initiation ceremony , Bro . McDonald acting as candidate . Bro . McDonald was called upon to work Sections , and with the assistance of the brethren worked the First , Second , Third , and Fourth in the First Lecture . Bro . Richardson was elected to the chair for the next Friday's meeting , and lodge was closed and adjourned .

CLAPTON LODGE ( No 1365 ) . —This lodge held a capital meeting on I'Viday , the 5 th inst ., at the Lord Stanley , Sandringham-road , Dalston . Present : Bros . Stephens , VV . M . ; Stoddart , S . W . ; Morling , J . VV . ; Honeychurch , Deacon ; George , I . G . ; Cusworth , Preceptor ; C . Diamond , Hon . Sec ; Cogan , Soper , Lutwyche , Bott , Godwin and others .

After due formalities the minutes were read and received confirmation , and the ceremony of initiation worked , Bro . C . Diamond being candidate . Bros . James Bott , 733 , and Godwin , 1579 , were duly admitted members of the lodge and expressed their thanks for their election . The services

of Bro . Stephens were recognised by a cordial vote of thanks to be recorded upon the minutes , this being the first occasion on which that brother had discharged the duties appertaining to the chair . The VV . M . suitably returned his . hearty thanks for the honour paid him , ana closed the lodge in harmony .

DUKE OF CONNAUGHT LODGE . —( No . 1524—This lodge met on the 3 rd inst ., at Bro . Richardson's , Royal Edward Tavern , Mare-street , Hackney . Present : Bros . Green , VV . M . ; Olley , S . VV . ; Stevens , J . VV . ; Dignam , Deacon ; Diamond , Hon . Sec , as I . G . ; W . Fieldwick , P . M ., Preceptor , & c . Lodge was duly opened and the minutes read and

confirmed ; the ceremony of initiation was worked , Bro . Fieldwick , candidate . 'The First Section of the Lecture was worked by Bro . Olley , assisted by the brethren . Bro . Olley was elected VV . M . for the ensuing lodge meeting . A vote of thanks , to be recorded upon the minutes , was accorded Bro . Diamond for the very efficient manner in which he had conducted the business of the chair on the 2 Gth ult ., and lodge was closed .

LANGTON LODGE l ( No . 1673 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held on the 4 th inst ., at the Mansion House Station Restaurant , Queen Victoria-street , E . C . Among the brethren present were the following ; Bros . Stoddart , in the chair ; Bue , S . VV . ; Morris , J . VV . ; Pocock , S . D . ; Barnett , J . D . ; Marshall , I . G . ; Sudlow , Preceptor ; J . D . Langton , Sec . ; Garland , Shaw , Vialls , Steingraber ,

Gurson , Tanqueray , VVickins ; and Bro . Lawrence , visitor . The lodge was opened in the FTrst Degree , and the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . The lodge then opened in the Second and Third Degrees , and resumed in the First , when Bro . Bartholomew , acting as candidate for the Third Degree , answered the usual questions , and the lodge having been resumed in the Third Degree , Bro . Bartholomew was raised to the Degree of a M . M . Alter

the usual call off , Bro . Shaw took the chair of W . M . for the remainder of the evening , and the lodge resumed in the First Degree ; Bro . Tanqueray working the Fourth Section ot the First Lecture . The W . M . then rose for the first time , and Bro . Bue was unanimously elected W . M . for the next meeting , after which the VV . M . rose for the second time , and Bro . Hosegood ' s resignation was read and accepted . 'The VV . M . again rose for the third time , and the lodge was closed .

TREDEGAR LODGE ( No . 1625 ) . —The brethren met as usual on Monday last , at the Royal Hotel , Mile Ene-road , E . Bro . Brittain was W . M ., and was well supported by Bros . Clements , S . W . ; C . Kendall , J . W . J C .

M . of the Merlin Lodge , and a comparatively young Mason , and though the circumstances in which he found himself must have been trying to a more experienced and older Mason , it is but justice to him to sav that he was fully and completely in harmony with the occasion , and discharged his onerous duties in a manner well worthy of the traditions of the Merlin Lodge , and we heartily congratulate bim upon the brilliant success 0 : the meeting .

I , thanking the lodge for a letter of sympathy which had been forwarded to him on the occasion of the death of his late father , Bro . G . Marwood , P . D . P . G . M . A letter from the Grand Secretary was also read , containing a decision of the Grand Registrar relative to the postponement of lodge meetings when the stated gatherings fall

upon publ . c holidays . Ihese were ordered to be placed upon the minutes . A telegram was read from the VV . M ., who was absent in Aberdeen , conveying " Hearty good wishes" to the lodge ; and a similar message was also read in a letter i . otn Bro . A . M . Broadley , at Tunis . The acting VV . M . also read a letter from Bro . A . G . Goodall , of New York , who is the representative of the Grand Lodge of England near the Grand Lodge of New

York , reporting the arrival in that city of Bro . Girling , of the Eboracum Lodge , who had taken letters of introduction to the United States , expressing his pleasure at receiving any members of 1611 , and intimating a hope that he should be able to visit York ere long . The lodge having been closed , the members met at refreshmer . t , and a social evening was passed .

In responding to the toast of The harl of Zetland and the Prov . Grand Lodge , " Bro . J . S . Cumberland , P . P . G . AVarden , gave a good report of the progress he had been able to make with the Earl ' s list for the Girls' Festival on Wednesday . It already amounted to a handsome sum , and he hcr . sd still to have additions to it . 'The Hull lodges had made most handsome votes , and North and East Yorkshire would , he hoped , be well represented .

Lodge was opened in due form , and Bro . Cant having submitted the minutes of the meeting held on the 1 st inst ., they were unanimously confirmed . Bro . Richardson as candidate was tested , and on lodge being advanced the ceremony of passing was really ably worked . Bro . Richardson next worked the First and Second Sections of the Second Lecturethe brethren assisting . 'The ceremony of

, closing the lodge in the Second Degree was carefully performed , and subsequently Bro . VV . Fraser was elected to preside over the lodge at its next meeting . The arrangement for working the Sections in this lodge were discussed , and it was arranged to work the Fifteen Section on Monday , the 5 th of June , so as to be clear of Bank Holiday . Bro .

G . H . Stephens has already consented to preside , and the list is being filled up . It is with great pleasure we mention the uniformly excellent working to be met with at this lodge , and which recommends it to seekers after Masonic instruction . To such Bro . P . M . The First Section , the ceremony of initiation , with proofs of proficiency , and the charge ( by Bro . J . Bate ) , were rehearsed , and the Fourth Section was worked by the brethren . " Question time" was occupied in discussing

sundry points of ritual and ceremony ; and Uro . H . M . Williams having been elected W . M . for the ensuing week , when the lodge will work in the Second Degree , and Bro . Stevens ( the Preceptor ) will anticipate a portion of his forthcoming lecture on the second ceremony , the lodge was closed . VVe are pleased to notice the steady increase of attendance at this lodge of instruction .

ceremony of initiation was worked , Bro . Taylor , candidate . Lodge was subsequently opened in the Superior Degrees and closed down . Bro . Evans then retired from the chair in favour of Bro . Ellingford , who proceeded to work the initiation ceremony , Bro . Evans candidate . A good evening's work having been done , Bro . Evans again occupied the chair , and Bro . Ellingford was duly elected W . M .

for next I uesday . Bro . VV . Cross , the esteemed Honorary Secretary , then informed the brethren that he had considered the subject of his resignation , and after the very kind expressions from the brethren , he had determined to continue in his position of Secretary to the lodge of instruction . The announcement gave great satisfaction to all present , and lodge was closed in due form and adjourned .

After due formalities the minutes were read and received confirmation , and the ceremony of initiation worked , Bro . C . Diamond being candidate . Bros . James Bott , 733 , and Godwin , 1579 , were duly admitted members of the lodge and expressed their thanks for their election . The services

of Bro . Stephens were recognised by a cordial vote of thanks to be recorded upon the minutes , this being the first occasion on which that brother had discharged the duties appertaining to the chair . The VV . M . suitably returned his . hearty thanks for the honour paid him , ana closed the lodge in harmony .
