the G . A . O . T . U . to call her off from her labours here on the iSth ult . No candidates being in attendance for advancement , the election of VV . After " Hearty good wishes , " the lodge was closed in perfect peace and harmony and the meeting adjourned .

M ., who would otherwise have been present , was that evening assisting at the initiation of a Greek priest—the superior of a convent and church at Chios—introduced by Bro . General Burnaby . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were subsequently honoured , and a pleasant evening was spent .

The annual report of this most admirably conducted Masonic Charity , which has just been issued , shows steady , substantial progress in respect to support , and a greatly widened field of usefulness occupied by the Charity itself . The following is the full text of the report which has been

issued lor the past year , a perusal of which will indicate how well and wisely the Charity is being managed : " The Committee have much pleasure in presenting the report and statement of accountsfor 1 SS 1 , and in expressing their congratulations on the abundant success which has attended the good work of the Institution . " The increased and increasing claims upon the

Institution will be seen by comparing the last year ' s report with this . In 1 SS 0 93 children received the benefits of the Charity , at an outlay of £ C > j \ 17 s . iod . ; during the past year 144 children have participated , at a cost to the Institution of £ 937 3 s . Sd . " The new bye-laws , entitling children to be claimants at the age of six years instead of eight , and permitting them to remain at school until the age of fifteen , also

allowing one-fourth of the amount granted to be expended in clothing , have been in full operation during the past year , accounting in a great measure for the large expendiditure noted above ; the increase alone over 1 SS 0 being equal to the total expenditure ten years ago . " Whilst gratefully thanking the various lodges and brethren for their generous subscriptions and

donations—special thanks being due to one lodge in particular , who have , by their efforts in connection with a concert and by individual subscriptions , materially assisted the funds during the past year—the Committee would beg to remind brethren that the extended sphere of usefulness which the new bye-laws have opened out , and the consequent larger

claims upon its funds , makes it the duty of every Drother in the province , not only to keep up his contributions , but in seasun and out of season to bring the claims of the Institution prominently before his fellows , that , as in the past so in the future , no child duly qualified shall be refused admission on the foundation for want of funds .

"Your Committee have to report with regret a larger list than usual of Life Governors deceased , containing the names of some good men and Masons , who in their day rendered good service to the Charity . " Finaliy , the Committee enter on the duties of another year full of confidence in the support of the brethren , and of trust that He from whom all good counsels and all just works do proceed will continue to bless and prosper the

good work . The " one lodge" generally referred to in the above report is , we understand , the Liverpool Dramatic Lodge , No . 1 G 09 , which , although only in existence for comparatively few years , now holds no fewer than eighty votes for the Charity . The contributions of the " Dramatic " for the past year amounts to the splendid sum of £ 70 105 ., of which £ 42 comes from the half proceeds of a concert given

by members of the Carl Rosa Company at the Bijou Opera House , to constitute the W . M . and l . P . M . Vice-Presidents ; five guineas for the sale of a P . M . 's portrait to constitute the Treasurer a Life Governor ; a live guinea donation from the VV . M ., I . P . M ., S . VV ., J . W . / Treasurer and Secretary , to constitute the Inner Guard a Life Governor ; and the remainder has been contributed by no fewer than seventy members of the lodge . The report bears the

names of Bros . Richard Brown and George Broadbridge , the Hon . Sees ., who have both largely contributed to the present capital position of the Charity . Bro . Brown , in consequence of ill-health , has given up the position of one of the Hon . Sees ., and it may be interesting to many to know that a testimonial is now being got up in the province

with the view of iecognising his valuable services for a period of nearly ten years , during which he has faithfully fulfilled the onerous duties of the office with an amount of self-sacrifice which cannot be too highly commended . Bro . R . Martin , P . M . 11 S 2 , has been appointed to assist Bro . Broadbridge in the performance of duties which involve the expenditure of much time and anxious work .

EDINBURGH . —Old St . David's Lodge ( No . 3 G ) . —At the past monthly meeting of this lodge , held on the iSth ult ., the brethren conferred honorary affiliation on Dr . A . M . Malm , from Gothenburg , wlio is here as Commissioner from the Swedish Government to the International Fisheries Exhibition , and has under his charge a duplicatecollectionof specimensof fishes from theGothenburg Museum , of which he is Directorand Manager ; these

specimens were collected by his father , the late Professor Malm and himself , and was the work of thirty years duration , there being a great difficulty in obtaining specimens to represent everystageof growth of fishes . This collection has attracted considerable attention of the scientists and pisciologists in Edinburgh . The Swedish exhibits were brought over at the expense of Bro . Oscar Dixon , who has already done ! -o much for Sweden and its Fisheries .

There were present at this meeting Bro . Murray Lyon , Grand Secretary , a number of deputations , and many of the R . W . M . 's of the Metropolitan Lodges , also a good attendance of visiting brethren . Bro . - Dr . Malm was introduced by P . M . Sellentin , and thereafter a most interesting ceremony was carried through by Bro . David Taylor , the R . VV . M . of St . David's , who after the affiliation presented him with the certirica ' e of the Grand Lodge of

Scotland , remarking that this enabled him now , to enter and work not only in Lodge St . David's , but all Lodges under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Scotland ; and while they felt themselves bound to recognise and honour the brother who pursued his researches with success into the hidden mysteries of Nature and Science , they , the brethren of St . David ' s , on their own and behalf of the Scottish

Craft , were exalting , or rather placing Masonry on the legitimate position which is inculcated by it . On Bro . Sellentin , P . M ., attaching the lodge jewel on his breast , Bro . Taylor again said : That among the insignas ol the many offices and honours which you so worthily bear , let this keep you in a kindly remembrance of Scottish Masonry , your visit to Edinburgh , and David ' s Lodge in

particular . Bro . Dr . A . M . Malm , after thanking with great feeling the R . VV . M . and brethren of the lodge for the honour conferred on him , said he esteemed it more highly because it was unasked and unexpected , yet would fain remark that he was not altogether unworth y of it . He then mentioned he had filled only lately four distinct offices in the different Degrees of his Order in Sweden , and during one and the

same period he acted as Librarian to the Gotha Provincial Lodge . He was Orator in the St . Andrew ' s Ledge of the Three United Crowns , and he was now Orator in St . John's Lodge , and honorary Secretary for the Freemasons' Home for Children , which offices , he believed , he filled to the satisfaction of the brethren .

Bro . Murray Lyon took the opportunity to mention that Bro . Dr . A . M . Malm was a member of the lodge in Sweden which had the honour of initiating H . R . H . the Prince of Wales in Masonry . After the usual complimentary toasts to the deputations , R . W . M . 's , and visiting brethren , the lodge was duly closed .

DISTRICT GRAND LODGE OF OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND . The installation of Bro . Thomas Sherlock Graham as R . W . Distrtct Grand Master of Otago and Southland took place on Thursday , March 2 nd , in the Temperance Hall , Moray-place , Dunedin , in the presence of the largest assemblage of the Craft yet witnessed here . Several years

have elapsed since the installation of so important an officer as the District Grand Master is—a functionary possessing in his jurisdiction powers only secondary to these of the M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales ; and therefore the ceremony of Thursday may justly be considered worthy

of being marked with a red letter in the annals of the District of Otago and Southland . The preparations made by the Board of General Purposes for the event were most complete , every part of the ceremonials being carried out with the utmost precision by those officers entrusted with the details . The last event of the kind in connection with English Craft Masonry took place in the old Masonic Hall

New Ireland.

in Manse-street , on the nth August , 1 SG 4 , when the late and lamented R . W . Bro . John Lazar installed Bro . John Hyde Harris , and invested the ^ officers of the then Provinvincial Grand Lodge with great eclat . But the ceremony of 'Thursday was of a still more brilliant character , and was witnessed by representatives of every Craft lodge in the district , who attended to pay homage to their new

ruler . The brethren assembled in the Masonic Hall , and marched in procession to the adjoining building , the upper hall of which had been specially fitted up for the occasion , and the VV . M . of the Lodge of Otago proceeded to open the lodge . This being done the District Grand Lodge of Otago and Southland , E . C , was announced and received with appropriate honours .

The R . W . Bro . H . S . Fish , D . D . G . M ., then opened his lodge in due form , and the D . G . Secretary , VV . Bro . S . James , proceeded to call the roll of lodges , those represented being the Otago , Dunedin , Port Chalmers Marine , Lake Lodge of Ophir , Southern Cross , Waitaika , S ; . George , Palmerston , Hercules . The lodges of sister constitutions were Kilwinning Otago

St . Andrew , Clutha , Celtic Oamaru Kilwinning ; St . John ' s , Invercargill ; Cargill Kilwinning ; St . John ' s , N . E . Valley ; Scotch Constitution , and St . Patrick , Irish Constitution . The R . W . Bro . George P . Pierce , R . W . P . G . Master of New Zealand , Irish Constitution , was then annnounced and received , taking the chair as lnstallling Officer ; and the approach of the new District Grand Master was

announced by sound of trumpet , in answer to which the VV . Bro . C . Longueville Graham , G . D . C , proceeded to bring into Grand Lodge the patent granted by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales appointing the VV . Bro . Thomas Sherlock Graham , District Grand Master of Otago and Southland , which he handed to the Installing Officer , who directed the VV . Bro . S . James , D . G . S ., to read it . The patent

having been read , a deputation composed of six Past Masters , with the Board of Grand Stewards , the Grand Swordbearer , VV . Bro . H . F Dench , and the G . Director of Ceremonies , with his assistant , waited on the District Grand Master , preceding and attending him into the Grand Lodge , the organ playing an appropriate march , and the choir chanting the anthem , " Incline thine ear . ''

The R . W . Bro . Pierce then addressed the D . G . Master ; and the Rev . Bro . Lichtenstein , District Grand Chaplain , offered a prayer appropriate to the occasion , the choir chanting the responses . After being obligated and invested , the R . W . District Grand Master was placed on the throne , and , preceded by his Heralds , the District Grand Director of Ceremonies thrice proclaimed that the R . W . Bro . 'Thomas Sherlock

Graham had been duly installed as District Grand Master of Masons of Otago and Southland . Prior to each proclamation the Heralds made a flourish of trumpets . The brethren present then paid the customary homage to the District Grand Master , and the choir chanted the ode , " Lead , kindly light , amid the encircling gloom . " The VV . Bro . E . Nathan was then presented and duly invested as W . Deputy District Grand Master , the Grand

Director of Ceremonies , again attended by the Heralds , proclaiming that worshipful brother as Deputy Grand Master with similar honours ; and the choir chanted " 1 will lift up mine eyes . " The Grand 'Treasurer for the ensuing year was then elected , the choice of the Grand Lodge tailing on W . Bro . Julius Hyman , P . G . S . W . and P . G . T . The following Grand Officers were then presented to the R . W . D . Grand Master , who invested them -.

VV . Bro . S . de Leon Dist . G . J . W . „ B . Lichtenstein Dist . G . Chap , „ J . Hyman Dist . G . Treas „ J . A . D . Adams Dist . G . Reg . „ S . James Dist . G . Sec . „ S . James Dist . G . Sec .

The District Grand Chaplain having offered prayer , the choir chanted an anthem , and the District Grand Officers received the salute due to their rank from the brethren present , led by the VV . G . D . of Ceremonies . The R . VV . District Grand Master then delivered an inaugural address to the brethren under his jurisdiction . Afterwards he received congratulation from theK . VV . District and Provincial Grand Masters present , with those

of the Masters of the lodges under his rule , and from visiting Masters , to each of which he made suitable replies . The "Old Hundredth Psalm" was then rendered by the choir , and " Farewell till again we shall welcome the time" was sung . 'The District Grand Lodge closed in due form . VVe must not omit to mention that the whole of the

beautiful ceremony of installation was composed by the VV . President of the Board of General Purposes , Bro . E . Nathan , D . D . G . M . Prior to closing the lodge an Audit Committee , consisting of the W . Bros . Burton , Fordyce , and VV . Asher , and a Committee to revise the bye-laws of the Grand Lodge , consisting of VV . Bros . Nathan , Hyman , James , and Burton , were appointed ; while the District

Grand Master specially thanked the choir for the very great musical treat they had afforded them . A ball to celebrate the installation of the District Grand Master was given in the Garrison Hall on the same evening . The interior of the building was appropriately decorated , while the corridors beneath the galleries were fitted with lounges and chairs for the accommodation of

the dancers ; appropriate retiring-rooms were provided for the ladies ; and there was an excellent card-room on the main floor . The Austrian Band discoursed some of their sweetest music during the evening ; and the whole of the arrangements were admirably carried out by the Board of Stewards , headed by the District Grand Master himself .

The supper and other refreshments were of the most recherche character , and were provided in Bro . Waters well-known and liberal style . Dancing was kept up with great spirit during the evening , and the whole of the persons present ( fully 400 in number ) thoroughly enjoyed themselves .

Prior to closing the lodge an Audit Committee , consisting of the W . Bros . Burton , Fordyce , and VV . Asher , and a Committee to revise the bye-laws of the Grand Lodge , consisting of VV . Bros .
