Halstead , 194 S ; R . Barron , 194 S ; S . Bailey , 194 S ; Walter Biggs , 149 G ; and R . R . Lisenden , J . D . 317 , ( Freemason ) , It will be seen by the large body of brethren present that a most successful meeting was held , at the same time

the space in the school room was scarcely adequate to comfortably accommodate so many , as we observed several who were compelled to stand at the lower end of the room , whilst others could not gain admittance . All things considered , however , the arrangements were carried out in a satisfactory manner , and reflected credit on the Directors of Ceremonies , and others who had the management thereof . The Hardman Lodge , No . 194 S , which was

consecrated at the beginning of the present year at Rawtenstall , commenced proceedings at 12 . 40 by opening in the three degrees , and at one o ' clock , with exemplary punctuality , the M . W . P . G . M . entered , preceded by his Standard and Sword Bearers , and followed by a long array of Present and Past Provincial Grand Officers , and was duly saluted , as was the V . W . D . P . G . M ., Bro . George Mellor ;

after which Provincial Grand Lodge was opened , and the Prov . Grand Secretary , Bro . John Chadwick called over the list of lodges holden in the province , to the number of ninety-two , all of which were responded to by representatives therefrom , with one notable exception , viz ., the Ashburys , No . 1 459 , at West Garton . The roll of Provincial Grand Officers was next called

over and responded to , with four exceptions , of which number two sent letters of apology on account of illness , whilst the other two , by command of the M . W . P . G . M ., were ordered to be fined . With regard to the minutes of the last Provincial Grand meeting at Blackburn , the Provincial Grand Secretary stated that a copy of the same had been duly forwarded to each lodge in the province , whereupon the M . W . P . G . M . said they would , with the consent of the brethren , be taken as read .

After a summary of the Provincial Grand 1 reasurer s ( Bro . H . L . Hollingworth ) accounts had been read by that zealous brother , a report on the same was delivered by the Auditors , Bros . J . J . Meakin , P . M . 992 , and J . E . Lees , P . M . G 45 , both of whom proving by the somewhat exhaustive manner in which they dilated upon the various items of expenditure that they had been the right men in the right places . The M . W . P . G . M . complimented Bro . H . L .

Hollingworth and the Auditors for the clear and precise manner in which the accounts had been kept and audited . Bros . J . M . Sinclair , W . M . 1 G 3 ; Rigby , 345 ; and Andrew , 2 GS , were appointed Auditors for the ensuing year . The election of Provincial Grand Treasurer was the next business , and two candidates were put forward for the honour , viz ., Bro . lohn Rigby , P . M . ' , 45 , proposed by Bro .

Capt . Hargreaves , P . G . J . VV ., and Bro . J . E . Lees , P . M . 645 , proposed by Bro . Chas . Heywood , P . P . G . Reg . In referring to Bro . Rigby's qualifications for the office , Bro . Captain HARGREAVES spoke at some , length , and mentioned the fact of Bro . Rigby being brought forward last year , and having to give place to the present Prov . G . Treasurer . Bro . Hargreaves further stated he had been under the impression that no serious opposition would be

given to Bro . Rigby ' s election ; but as there appeared to be another candidate in the field , and in order to avoid a contest , he would withdraw his proposition , trusting the brethren would on a future occasion give Bro . Rigby their cordial support . Bro . J . E . Lees was therefore elected unanimously P . G . Treasurer for the ensuing year ; after which the following brethren were invested officers for the year :

Bro . Edward Parker Prov . S . G . W . „ G . E . Hardman Prov . J . G . W . ,, Rev . T . F . Collins Prov . G . Chap . ,, Rev . E . H . Thomas Prov . G . A . Chap „ J . E . Lees Prov . G . Treas . „ J . Heelis Prov . G . Reg . „ John Chadwick Prov . G . Sec . „ G . Galloway Prov . S . G . D .

After a lengthy report , read by the Prov . G . Secretary , on the doings of the Charity Committee during the past year , Bros . J . F . Hoffgaard , P . P . S . G . D ., and Frank A . Huet , P . P . G . P . Staffordshire , were called forward to receive the charity jewel on behalf of their respective lodges , for their earnest and successful efforts in the cause of

charity . In addressing Bro . Frank A . Huet , the M . W . P . G . M . said : It must be a source of great gratification for you to receive , as it is to me to present to you from your lodge , this jewel . It is pleasant to all classes of men when they see virtue , honour , and good deeds rewarded ; and when Masons consider that those good deeds are founded on the basis of charity , it is doubly so . 1 , therefore , have the greatest pleasure in presenting this jewel to you . I have

known of your work in Masonry , though I have never had a personal acquaintance with you , and I am consequently delighted to make your acquaintance in this Prov . Grand Lodge . The M . W . P . G . M ., in pursuance of a notice of motion on the agenda paper , proposed— "That an address be respectfully presented to Her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen by this Provincial Grand Lodge , which shall express the horror and indignation felt bv all the members of this

Provincial Grand Lodge at the atrocious attempt on the life of Her Majesty , and their sense of deep gratitude to the Great Architect of the Universe at Her Majesty ' s happy escape . " 1 he resolution was seconded and carried unanimously ; and the M . W . P . G . M . suggested that a Committee be appointed for determining the best means of compiling and forwarding the address to Her Majesty ; whereupon Bro . H . L . HOLLINGWORTH , P . P . G . T ., proposed the

iM . W . P . G . M ., the Past and Present S . and J . Grand Wardens , the Prov . Grand Secretary and Registrar to form the Committee , which was seconded and carried . Bro . CHAS . HEYWOOD , P . P . G . Reg ., proposed " That the sum of fifty pounds be contributed from the Prov . Grand Lodge Fund in aid of the East Lancashire Systematic Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution , " which was seconded and carried .

Bro . GEORGE PARKER BROCKBANK , P . P . G . D ., proposed " That the sum of fifty guineas be paid out of the funds of Prov . Grand Lodge to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . " In moving this resolution , our highly esteemed and hardworking brother spoke with some warmth on the very small amounts that had been given to the Charities by Past Past Prov . Grand Officers , and expressed himself very

strongly that sufficient had not been done in that direction by Prov . Grand Officers in return for the great honours conferred upon them by the M . W . Prov . Grand Master . Bro . Brockbank went on to say that he had in his pocket a list of contributions received from Prov . Grand Officers during the last few years , but he should , for obvious reasons , not read it out , trusting the hint would be sufficient for all whom it might concern , and that more support

would be given to the Charities in the future . 1 he resolution was seconded and carried unanimously , after which Prov . Grand Lodge was closed in due form at three o ' clock . Before Prov . Grand Lodge was closed , Bro . GEORGE P . BROCKBANK rose and said that in view of the great honour that had been recentl y bestowed , by the Grand Lodge in London on Bro . Clement R . N . ' Beswicke-Royds , P . P .

S . G . W ., in making him Grand Deacon of England , he ( Bro . Brockbank ) suggested that the congratulations of this Prov . Grand Lodge be offered to Bro . Royds on his appointment , and that the same be entered on the minutes . Bro . Brockbank was followed by the M . W . P . G . M ., who made some congratulatory remarks to Bro . Royds , and the resolution was carried , after which Bro . ROYDS thanked the brethren for their appreciation of the honour conferred upon him .

Bro . TOJI NASH , P . P . G . Reg ., next rose , and stated that in consideration of the self sacrifice and personal efforts which the M . W . P . G . M . had made in being present there to-day , under very trying circumstances , acutel y affecting his own interests , that a cordial vote of thanks be offered him . The resolution was seconded by Bro . Thomas Chorlton , P . P . G . Reg ., and carried with acclamation .

lhe M . W . P . G . M ., in thanking Bro . Tom Nash for his kind remarks , fully endorsed what had been said , but expressed the great pleasure he had experienced in being present and presiding over them once more . Prov . Grand lodge was then closed , and the brethren proceeded to church , where a short but eloquent sermon was preached by the Rev . T . F . Collins , P . G . Chap ., after which a collection was made , amounting to over / . " Go .

At the Town Hall a banquet was prepared by Bro . Edmondson Yates , of the Swan Hotel , to which a large number of the brethren sat down . The Hall was very tastefully decorated with flags and banners , and presented an elegant appearance . The menu cards were printed in dark and light blue , the front page having the crest , coat-of-arms , and jewel of the M . W . P . G . M ., specially designed by Bro . George Kenning , 47 , Bridge-street , Manchester .

194 S , which was

consecrated at the beginning of the present year at Rawtenstall , commenced proceedings at 12 . 40 by opening in the three degrees , and at one o ' clock , with exemplary punctuality , the M . W . P . G . M . entered , preceded by his Standard and Sword Bearers , and followed by a long array of Present and Past Provincial Grand Officers , and was duly saluted , as was the V . W . D . P . G . M ., Bro . George Mellor ;

after which Provincial Grand Lodge was opened , and the Prov .
