Worshipful Grand Master , " and , in so doing , said it almost impossible to say anything new about the toast l * they all knew that anything their G . M . could do for H benefit of the Craft he always did vvith his whole heart a 1 soul . He asked them , therefore , to drink the toast : bumpers , - and most cheerfully did the brethren resnnnH !" the call . ' ttt

Ihe I . P . M . then proposed the toast of "The PG M the D . G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present a i Past , " and said that although he had not the honour f knowing them personally , be had read of them and of the ¦ great services to Freemasonry in the Freemason , and to sociel " . at large in thc daily papers . Lords Carnarvon ancl Uthon ' vvere familiar names in the mouths of every English Mi *

as brilliant examples ot labour and self-sacrifice for -T , cause , and he asked the brethren to drink the toast heartily ' Bro . Coupland , then had the honour of proposin" * tl , toast of "The Right Hon . the Earl Amherst , P . G . M „ ¦ Kent , " and said that they , as good Masons , delighted ' to honour his lordship . They had on the previous Tuesdav seen him at Burnley presiding over P . G . Lodge , and there

he seemed in the best of health and spirits , and announced his intention of getting- married shortly , ancl he felt sure they would all agree with him when he heartil y wished hj m and his wife who vvas to be , many years of health and happiness . He well remembered his lordship when , in iS ( j 0 he took over the duties of P . G . M . of the Province of Kent ' and since then he had unremittingly attended to the duties

of that high ancl important position as anyone who attended Prov . G . Lodge might easily see and understand , and such had been the influence of his lordship ' s genial , yet firm ruling , that they now numbered over 3000 brethren of the province , all actuated by but one sentiment , namely , love and respect for their Prov . G . Master . After pleasantl y alluding to the forthcoming marriage of his lordship , he asked them

to show their appreciation of his many admirable and genial qualities by drinking his health with all the enthusiasm in their power , and heartily wish him and his future wife Ion" * life and happiness . The toast vvas drunk amid repeated rounds of cheers , and every demonstration of esteem ami regard for his lordship . Bro . Lawson then proposed the toast of "The D . P . G . M .

Bro . Eastes , and the rest of the P . G . Officers , Present and Past . " lie said no lodge in the province had more reason to be proud of the members of Prov . G . Lod ge than the Pattison had . During the past two years they had had to go to his lordship upon matters seriously alf ecting their position as members of P . G . Lodge , with the result that theirP . G . Master hacl , at Bromley , on the previous Tuesday , laiddown ,

in clear and precise terms , the following solution of the difficulty , namely : that the Pattison and United Military Lodges were to remain provincial lodges , and still hold their meetings at the Plumstead Masonic Hall ; but should any new lodge be formed , or any lodge at present in the province hold its meetings there , they must be formed under , or join the banner of the Metropolitan district . With the toast he

had the privilege of coupling the name of a distinguished and respected Mason , Bro . Russell . That brother vvas on the previous Tuesday unanimously elected to the important position of P . G . Treasurer ; it was an office that had been held for iG years by his predecessor , Bro . Thorpe , and his predecessor ' s father had held it before him , and now , as he hadsaid , Bro . Russell was , at theirlate Prov . G . Lodge meeting

at Bromley , elected unanimously to the position so long ancl honourably held by Bro . Thorne , and the very first lodge he had visited after his election was the Pattison Lodge , for which he , in the name of the lodge , heartly thanked him , and asked the brethren to show their thanks by drinking the toast in bumpers . Bro . Russell , who was heartily cheered on rising to

respond , said he thanked them on behalf of himself and thc Officers of Prov . Grand Lodge , Present and Past , for the toast so ably put by Bro . Lawson , and so kindly responded to by them . He looked upon it as a good augury for the future of the province , that the very first lodge visited by him , after the high office conferred on him , should bc the strongest lodge in the province . Directly

he received their invitation he accepted it as an augury , and said to himself " I must go , " and he vvas there , and vvas very gratified at the kind and hearty reception given him . It inspired him with the idea that he should receive the assistance of that powerful lodge , and not only that , but every lodge in the province . If so it would make his duties easy ancl the task a pleasant one to follow in tire

footsteps of one who had so long , so nobly , and so honourably filled the office held by their esteemed Bro . Thorpe-He had , however , for many years been in the constant habit of handling sovereigns , and the more he now had from O province the merrier , for if there vvas one thing more than another that gratified him , it vvas to know the great amount of good the province did with its money . He need not tell

them because they knew what the province had done for tire Charities of the Order . The votes of the province , when collected and gathered together were the means of enabling ' them to carry their candidates , ancl had acted as cause and effect , and so enabled them to keep the lead they had taken many years ago , and which it vvas intended to keep up , a * instanced by the thousand guineas collected last year for tire of

Girls' School Centenary Festival . In iiis position as one the Provincial Charity Commissioners , hc had to prepare the lists so as to know where the votes vvere to come fr ° * and nothing gave him greater pleasure than to see I 3 ro . Coupland walk in one election day vvith a bundle of vole * neatly tied up vvith a piece of red tape ; a piece that seemed to be a bond of union between them , for directly he saw it

he knew the value of it , and that it vvas for him ancl the interest of the province generally that they were s ° presented . After congratulating the lodge on its support o | the Charities , he referred to the recent move of the lodge "over the border . " It had been a source of great trouble to the P . G . Lodge , and his lordship especially , who was not going to lose his first born if he could help it j and as Jaco '

wrestled vvith the angel from early morn till dewy eve , a * their Prov G . M . wrestled with the angel at Grand Lodgetheir esteemed Bro . Col . Clerke , and defeated him . " . then concluded by again heartily thanking them for then cordial reception of the toast . The I . P . M . then proposed the toast of " The VV . M ., ' , ' & f

in so doing , said he felt that he could scarcely do justice w the toast . They had had some experience of Bro . J . opez » and could all say that he vvas a most excellent brotJK- ' ' ! . . good Mason , lt was told them in a portion of thc inst al j- " tion ceremony , that " every candidate for the Master's cW should be courteous in manner , easy of address , but stea y and firm in principle , " and he felt sure that it would be ** in the case of their esteemed W .
