Thc annual Royal Caledonian Ball , in aid of the funds of the Royal Caledonian Asylum and the Royal Scottish Hospital , vvas held in the Whitehall Rooms of the Hotel Metropole , on Monday , under the usual distinguished patronage , the number of guests present on the occasion being about 700 ..

Among the passengers on board the British India Steam Navigation Company's s . s . Quetta , which arrived at PK-. mouth on Tuesday , was Professor Pepper , vyhose ghosts attained at one time to a wonderful amount of popularity The veteran scientist will be remembered for his connection vvith the Polytechnic Institution . For the last ten years he and Mrs . Pepper have been sojourning- in thc land of cockatoos and kangaroos . He returns in excellent health , and with his mental vivacity unimpaired .

Mr . Ruskin is one of the race of early risers . He is at bis desk before sunrise , even in the summer months . Like Mr . Gladstone , he cuts timber for his health ' s sake , but instead of felling trees he chops wood . Mr . Ruskin is not quite so sedentary as men of letters usually are . Unlike Lord Beaconsfield , he believes in the necessity of a "

constitutional , " which he takes regularly before dinner . Heis also—or used to be—fond of rowing on the lake at his Lancashire home . His style of rowing would not excite the enthusiasm of members of Thames rowing clubs . But he can spin along without any scientific "feathering , " \ n a very original style of his own .

turning a handle , any person can actually " measure " his sight , and see at a glance what sort of spectacles or glasses he requires to preserve or restore his vision , while at the same time the automaton presents its patron vvith a card bearing a number indicating the kind of spectacles required . EXCURSION OF THE Q UATUOR CORONATI LODGE . — The energetic Secretary of this lodge is arranging for an excursion on Saturday , the 20 th inst ., to St . A correspondent has brought to our notice the very distressing circumstances under which a Bro . VV . H . Lewis vvas led , in a momentary condition of insanity , to take his own life . It appears that the poor fellow had invested the sum ° f £ ' 5 ° in what appears to have turned out to be a heartless swindle ; that he had gradually sold the bulk of his furniture in order to buy food for his wife ; ancl that under the frenzv

of worry and anxiety thus caused , he committed suicide . The coroner ' s jury recommended " That the Public-Prosecutor should be called upon to take action in the matter ; " and our correspondent suggests that a subscription for the relief of the poor widow should be opened in our columns . VVe see no objection to such a course if the charge of the fund to be raised is placed in the hands ol responsible brethren .

Our attention has been drawn to a proposal that the Freemasons of England should raise a fund sufficient to provide one or t vo stalls in the choir of Peterborough Cathedral to commemorate the laying of the foundation-stone of the Central Tower on the 7 th May , 1 SS 4 , by Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon , Pro Grand Master of England , acting for the Prince of Wales , M . W . Grand Master , who vvas prevented ,

by the death of his brother , the Duke of Albany , from performing the ceremony , as originally settled . Bros . I ' - Verzette , jun ., P . P . G . Reg . Norths and Hunts , and Henry C . Clarabut , P . G . Org . Norths and Hunts , both of Peterborough , have kindly undertaken to act as Hon . Secretaries of the fund , and Bro . the Earl of Euston , P . G . M . Norths and Hunts , has expressed his approval of the project , and

promised a donation of £ 5 , while the Prov . Grand Lodge has voted £ 25 . VVe trust the scheme will meet vvith still further encouragement , and that all brethren who can he of any service will render it either by calling the attention of their lodges and chapters to the appeal , or by canvassing for subscriptions , and remitting them to Bro . E . Verzette , jun ., North-street , Peterborough , or Bro . H . C . Clarabut , Market-place , Peterborough .

of worry and anxiety thus caused , he committed suicide .
