Ous energetic brother , Col . Foster Gough , Prov . G . Master for Staffordshire , will soon be able to qualify as an Operative Mason . During the last two months he has officially taken part in the laying of five foundation-stones in his province—an unprecedented feat in English Freemasonry , vve imagine . Bro . Horace Brooks Marshall must look to his laurels ! Fifty guineas of the surplus from the Stewards' fees of the recent Festival has been again very judiciously spent in providing a treat for the Girls at the Crystal Palace . It vvas a lovely day , and the children enjoyed it amazingly .

Ihe Whitehall Lodge appears to be assuming form and substance , although it comes in a " somewhat questionable shape . " If vve may credit the announcements in the daily press , Bro Viscount Oxenbridge will

be invited to become the first W . M ., and the meetings are intended to be held at the Hotel Victoria . If this be true , vve can see no objection " per se " to its name or local habitation , nor why the habitues of the palatial

club close by , should not have a convenient place adjoining , " to meet as Masons , provided they left their politics behind , which we feel sure they would have the good sense to do .

111 . Bro . J . F . Hoffgaard , 30 , P . P . G . D . East Lancashire , was installed M . W . S . of the Palatine Rose Croix Chapter , on Wednesday , the 3 rd instant ; and at the same meeting , Bro . J . H . Sillitoe , P . G . Std . Br . England , P . P . G . W . East Lancashire , vvas perfected .

Bro . Montague J . Guest , the popular P . G . M . of Dorset , must , vve think , have been gratified at the success of his scheme for a Dorset Masonic Charity when he saw the large and influential attendance of brethren supporting Bro . W . D . Dugdale , the Chair-

Masonic Notes.

man , at the General Committee Meeting at Wimborne on Thursday , the 4 th inst . The subject of a Provincial Benevolent Fund vvas first introduced b y Bro . Guest at the P . G . Lodge meeting at Dorchester on 25 th Sept .,

1879 . Our report of that meeting states that " The P . G . M . addressed the brethren on various matters affecting the Freemasons , particularly in regard to thc formation of a Charity Fund for the province . " * * *

We wonder if our brother could then have ventured to hope that before ten years had expired the Fund he then proposed to start could afford to disburse

in relief at a half-yearly meeting no less than . £ 85 , as it seems from our report of the meeting of the General Committee , which will be found in another column , has been done .

Bro . C . Meyer and his fellow pilgrims from Philadelphia have been in London during the week ; they proceed to Paris to-day ( Friday ) , but will return for a day or two next week . The Anglo-American Lodge , as might have

been expected , have arranged for an emergency meeting on the 23 rd inst ., for the purpose of receiving the party as guests , and all who have experienced the hospitality of the " international" lodge will be sure that a hearty welcome awaits them .

The party was entertained at dinner at the Holborn Restaurant on Wednesday evening b y Bro . Cummings , himself a Philadelphia !! . Invitations were extended

to a few London brethren . Some excellent speeches were made by Bros . Kelly , Meyer , and others . The several toasts were responded to by Bros . Cumberland , Reynolds , and Lake .

Bro . Kelly , who forms one of the party , is a man of great energy , ancl an earnest worker in Masonry . He is Chairman of the Temple Committee , and has had

charge of the Temple since its dedication , 16 years ago . He is also Chairman of the Committee of Correspondence of the Grand Commandery of Knights of Pennsylvania .

Why cannot the pretty Masonic visiting card so universally used by Freemason ' s in America , be acclimatised in this country' ? Is it that the English Mason objects to the publicity given to his Masonic rank and titles ? We think not . But if so , it might be urged

that they are only used amongst Masons , and it is surely much less embarrasing to hand a brother a neat card , setting forth his claim for consideration as a Mason , than to reel off a " viva voce" description of his Masonic status .

Bro . C . H . Cummings' card is now before us . It sets forth that be is " Past Eminent Commander K . T . ; a member of St . Mark's Lodge , F . and A . M . ; Masonic Veteran Association , N . Y . ; Zerubbabel Chapter , No . 147 , R . A . M . ; Packer Commandery , No . 23 , K . T . ;

Philadelphia Consistory , S . P . R . S ., 32 ° ; " and Sov . Grand Inspector , 33 ° On the back is the following quaint intimation : "I expect to pass through this

world but once . Any good thing , therefore , that I can do , or any kindness I can show to any fellow human being , let me do it NOW . Let me not defer or neglect it , for I shall not pass this way again . "

The Tranquillity Lodge , No . 274 , Newchurch , will hold its centenary meeting on Wednesday , thc 17 th inst ., when the centenary warrant and jewels will be presented by Bro . Alderman E . G . Harwood , P . P . J . G . W ., and Chairman of the East Lancashire Charity Committee .

Bro . Col . Le Gendre N . Starkie , Prov . Grand Master of East Lancashire , will lay the foundationstone of the new Grammar Schools at Newchurch in Rossendale , on Saturday , the 3 rd of August next .

The M . W . Grand Master has granted a warrant for a new lodge to meet at Bradford , Yorks , to be called the Acacia . The new lodge , which is numbered 2321 , will shortly be consecrated , ancl will bring up the number of lodges in the Province of West Yorkshire to 74 . Bro . Lord Brooke , M . P ., Provincial Grand Master of Essex , has fixed Tuesday , August 6 th , for the annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge , which is to be held at his lordship ' s picturesque seat of Easton Lodge , near Dunmow . We hear that after the usual business meeting , a banquet will be served in a marquee on the terrace ; that the private grounds will be

Bro . C . H . Cummings' card is now before us . It sets forth that be is " Past Eminent Commander K . T . ; a member of St . Mark's Lodge , F . and A . M . ; Masonic Veteran Association , N . Y . ; Zerubbabel Chapter , No . 147 , R . A . M . ; Packer Commandery , No . 23 , K . T . ;
