The Duke , who has returned command of the forces in Ireland , will come to town for his installation as Grand Master of Freemasons on the 17 th instant .
BRO . ALDERMAN SIR WILLIAM TRELOAR has been interviewed in reference to the announcement that a great oilcloth trust is in course of formation . In the Alderman ' s opinion the trust , if formed , will not have any effect on the floorcloth or linoleum industry in this country . " If , " he adds , "the rranulacturers of the United States do combine they cannot compete with our native producers . The cost of production over there is much greater than in this country , and you may take it from me that we don't feel at all alarmed by the announcement . ''

Sir George Faudel-Phillips , Bart ., presiding , the toast of the evening was that of "The Deputy Governor , Bro . Millar Wilkinson , " who was presented with a magnificent Iov ing-cup , together with four silver bowls for Mrs . Wilkinson ; in recognition of his services as Djp uty Governor , and as a mark of his colleagues' esteem . Bro . Millar Wilkinson replied in appreciative terms to the compliment paid him . SIR IOHN B . MONCKTON entered upon his 70 th year on July Cth . That he
may long live to enjoy health and happiness will be the sincere wish of all who realise the sterling service he his rendered to the City of London during the 2 S years he has held the office of Town Clerk . WHAT PROMISES to be an exceedingly interestine enterprise undertaken as a means cf celebrating the forthcoming Coronation of his Majesty King Edward Vff , fs about to be launched in North Wales , where it is projected to repair and restore the lamous obelisk which formerly stood on the summit of Moel Fammau , the chiefest eminence in the Clwydian Hills . The obelisk was 150 feet high , and the base , which is still standing , is 60 feet wide . It was erected . in 1 S 10 to commemorate the J ubilee of King George the Third .
THE opening of the Grand Hotel at Southwold on Tuesday last sVouldmark the beginning of increasing success for this charming little resort , hitherto little known , but new the Coast Development Company are directing their energies to secure for it 3 gcod share of patronage of holiday makers , it is certain that the natural attractions of the place will become better known and appreciated . Southwold is reached from Liverpool-street to Halesworth , from thence an additional journey in a little toy train of about eight miles through charming heather covered scenery .
THE QUEEN VICTORIA MEMORIAL . —The Press Association understands that the Queen Victoria Memorial Executive Committee , at its meeting on Wednesday last , selected from among the plans submitted those which they considered most suitable . It is further understood that as a preliminary to publication of the name of the
successful competitor and of details of his plans , the selected scheme will have to be submitted to the General Committee , and afterwards approved by the King . There is little doubt that the Executive Committee's judgment will be confirmed , approved , and acted upon . Meantime , it is gratifying to note that increasing public support is being given to the scheme .

George's Channel , boats , & c , also a first-rate railway map of Ireland , directions as to the conveyance of luggage , & c . The volume contains also an outline history and
short descriptive sketch of every town and place of interest in Ireland , with excellent photographic reproductions of the most famous beauty spots and places of historic interest , castles , churches , & c . A time table showing railway and other transit facilities is printed on the opposite page to the descriptive letterpress . In conclusion , we may say that we have never seen a guidebook containing more exhaustive information , or better classified , than is the current number of the above comprehensive work .
THE MOST coveted object in the casket of jewels belonging to a French lady of rank , sold on Tuesday at Christie ' s for £ 38 , 879 , was a necklace composed of six rows of 424 , well-matched and graduated Orient pearls . The £ 20 , 000 paid for this necWace surpasses by many thousands all previous records at auction . In Paris not long ago a pearl necklace fetched 400 , 000 francs , to which must be added the Government commission of 10 per cent . In this country the record wis held by the Duchess of
Montrose s necklace , whose seven rows were composed of 3 O 2 pearls . For this 11 , 000 guineas was paid in April , 1 S 95 . The necklace sold on Tuesday , with emerald and brilliant clasp , has pearls to the weight of about 4050 grains , and the sum realised gives the amazing average of more than £ 49 103 . per stone of 9 1-3 grains each . Another lot of great interest was the earliest portrait of Queen Victoria by Anthony Stewirt . It went for 260 guineas .

THE LADY WARWICK HOSTEL AT READING .-The Founder's Day was celebrated on Tuesday in the hostel grounds at Reading by the first annual show of flowers , fruit , dairy produce , and poultry . It was in every way a great success , and a large and fashionable gathering of ladies and gentlemen interested in the sthem : put in an appearance , including the Countess of Warwick , L » dy Geortrina Vernon , Countess
of Bective , and Lord Kenyon . Interesting speeches were delivered by Countess Warwick and Lord Kenyon , both of whom extolled the schtme and expatiated on the good work done . Its great growth , said Lady Warwick , necess itates the expenditure of . £ 50 , 000 , in regard to the raising of which a meeting was to be held at the Mansion House on Friday . Students at the hostel were already going out and taking up suitable positions in the horticultural and agricultural world .
