RIVERHEAD . —Amherst Lodge ( No . 1223 ) . — The last meeting this year of the above lodge was held on Saturday , the 6 th instant . In the unavoidable absence of the W . M ., Bro . I . G . After the minutes of the last meeting had been read by Bro . Jewell , P . M ., P . P . G . R ., and confirmed , Bro . Houldsworth presented himself as a candidate to be raised to the Sublime Degree of M . M ., and having given proof of his proficiency in the former Degree , the ceremony was
proceeded with in the usual way . Bro . Duret was as careful and as accurate as ever , and the Deacons being thoroughly well up in their duties trie ceremony lost none of its solemnity or impressiveness . The sum of five guineas was voted from the lodge funds to augment the presentation Fund of the Girls' School ; and an omission
at a previous meeting was made good by the voting of a P . M . ' s jewel to Bro . J . I . Birch , I . P . M . The brethren partook of refreshment when all business was concluded , and the W . M . gave the customary toasts . Connected with that of "The Provincial Grand Officers " was the name of Bro . Jewell , of whom very kind words
were said , and in response the worthy brother said that his appointment to office in the province was an incentive to him to do even more than he had ever done for Masonry ; and he assured the brethren that it was always a "red letter day " in his calendar when he came to the Amherst Lodge . In resDondingto the toast of "The W . M ., " Bro . Duret
said that during the 13 years he had belonged to the lodge he had been absent but three or four times . He was greatly attached to the Amherst Lodge , and hoped that in the next year they would revive the old style of increasing their members , and get men who would be Masons not only in word but in deed .
Bro . Edwin Strange had to respond for "The Past Masters , " and in giving the toast Bro . Duret referred to the absence of their esteemed Bro . E . J . Dodd , who was that night at his chapter , where , he understood , he was to take office—an honour which they all knew him to be worthy of .
For "The Visitors" Bro . W . Drewett , W . M . 889 , was the spokesman , and , while thanking the brethren for the cordial reception always accorded him , he regretted that on that occasion he stood alone to reply . As is customary at this meeting , "The Health of the Host , Bro . Waller , " was proposed , and Bro . Duret said they had to thank him for his efforts to make them comfortable
and cosy , although he was greatly hindered by the want of the new room they had so long hoped for . Bro . Waller thanked the W . M . and brethren for the kind feeling shown towards him , and regretted very much that he could not put them in a more suitable room . Bro .
