LOUGHBOROUGH . —Howe and Charnwood Lodge ( No . 1007 ) .-The annual festival of this now once more flourishing and highly popular lodge held at the Bull ' s Head Hotel , but very largely composed of brethren
residing in the neighbouring county town of Leicester , was held on Tuesday , the 25 th ult ., and was the occasion of one of the largest and most influential gatherings of the Craft ever witnessed at such an event in the province of Leicestershire and Rutland , many brethren having travelled long distances from other provinces as a mark of respect to the W . M . elect , Bro . Charles Oliver , of Leicester , a brother of Councillor George Oliver , P . M ., who was himself installed
into the same chair two years ago , whose period of office was one of the most happy and prosperous in the recent history of the lodge , and who since he first joined it after the installation of the late General Burnaby , M . P ., has throughout taken such an active interest in promoting its welfare . During the past year the lodge has been ably presided over by Bro . Walton Wilkinson , of Leicester , the newly-installed VV . M . having filled the chair of S . W ., and
his unanimous election to the chair of King Solomon was a source of gratification to all the brethren . All the Leicester lodges were strongly represented at the ceremony , as well as various other lodges in different parts of the provinces , including Bro . T . Oliver , of the Bute Lodge , Cardiff , who takes the immediate charge and supervision of his brother , Councillor George Oliver ' s numerous branch boot and shoe establishments in all the principal towns of
South Wales and the South and West of England . Bro . George Oliver , jun ., the newly-initiated son of Bro . Councillor Oliver , was also among those present , illustrating the devotion of the family to the Craft , and the true brotherly love which prevails amongst them . As will be seen from the list which we give below , there was a very large attendance of P . M . 's , including W . Bro . S . Partridge , the extremely popular newly-appointed Deputy Prov . Grand
Master , and his successor in the office of Prov . Grand Secretary , Bro . the Rev . C . Henton Wood . M . in brief , but appropriate terms , proposed the toasts of " The Queen and the Craft , " and "The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , " which it is unnecessaiy to say were both drunk with the usual Masonic lovaltv .
Bro . Amatt , P . M ., proposed "The M . W . Pro Grand Master , the Earl of Carnarvon , the R . W . Deputy Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom , and the Grand Lodge of England , which was also very cordially drunk . Bro . Vaughan , P . M ., proposed ' * The R . W . Prov . Grand Master , the Earl Ferrers , and the Officers of the Prov . Grand Lodge , " coupled with the names of VV . Bro . | - Partridge , Deputy Prov . G . M ., and Bro . Michie , P . G . S . D . Bro . Vaughan remarked that he was quite sure it was a source of the greatest gratification to every brother

in the province to find Bro . Partridge promoted to the high rank which he now so worthily held , that of Deputy Prov . Grand Master , and they would all heartily congratulate Bro . Michie , too , upon his recent appointment to provincial office . VV . Bro . Partridge on rising to respond was greeted with much enthusiasm . He acknowledged the toast in brief ,
but appropriate terms , and expressed the pleasure it had afforded him to witness the very complimentary manner in which the Howe and Charnwood Lodges had that day received the representatives of the Prov . Grand Lodge . He also thanked the brethren for their very kind congratulations of himself , and hoped he should be able satisfactorily to discharge the duties of the office to which he had been so
generously appointed . Bro . Michie also briefly responded . Bro . Walton Wilkinson , I . P . M ., next proposed " The Health of the new VV . M ., Bro . Charles Oliver , " of whom he spoke in the highest terms of regard both as a Mason and in his private capacity . The Worshipful Master , on rising to acknowledge the
toast , was greeted in the heartiest possible manner . He sincerely thanked the brethren of the Howe and Charnwood Lodge for the distinguished honour they had that day conferred upon him , and trusted that at the expiration of his year of office he should be able to congratulate himself that he had , at least , done his best to merit the confidence which they had all so kindly placed in him . He had the
satisfaction of feeling that whenever he required it he might fully rely upon the assistance of the experienced body of Past Masters who belonged to the lodge . He also took that opportunity of acknowledging the great additional compliment which had that day been paid to him by the attendance of such a numerous gathering of brethren from other lodges , both in and out of the province .
The VVorshipful Master , in very eulogistic terms , then proposed " The Health of the Installing Master , VV . Bro . C . J . Wilkinson , P . P . G . P ., P . M ., " special reference being made to the very able and impressive manner in which Bro . Wilkinson had now for several years acted in the same capacity at the Howe and Charnwood festivals . Bro . C . J . Wilkinson briefly responded , and expressed
the gratification it always gave him to render to the Craft any services in his power . Bro . the Rev . John Bird , P . M ., briefly proposed "The l . P . M . and Past Masters of the Lodge , " which was suitably responded by Bro . W . Wilkinson , l . P . M . Bro . Vial , P . M ., P . P . G . O ., proposed " The Visiting Brethren , " coupled with the names of Bros . Bland , S .
Parkes , and T . Oliver , each of whom acknowledged the compliment . The VVorshipful Master proposed " The Officers of the Lodge , expressing the utmost confidence that they would each in their various capacities afford him every assistance in conducting the business of the lodge during his year of office .
Bros . Marshall , S . W ., and Lowenstein , J . D ., acknowledged the toast . Bro . the Rev . VV . R . Hurd proposed in very complimentary terms "The Musical Brethren , " which was drunk with much enthusiasm , and acknowledged in appropriate terms by Bros . Laxton and Wykes . The proceedings during the evening were enjoyably
varied by some excellent vocal and instrumental music , recitations , & e , Bro . T . B . Laxton , Prov . G . Organist , having specially arranged a capital musical programme , which was very elegantly printed in a separate form , surmounted with the arms of the Howe and Charnwood Lodge —those of Earl Howe . The menu , which was also very artistic , bore on the back an excellent cabinet-sized
photograph of the new VV . M . the musical party consisted of Bros . Henry Nicholson ( flute and piccolo ) , T . A . Wykes ( bassoon ) , and Barrow ( piano ) . These brethren gave at intervals very charming performances of selections of English and Scotch airs , and a special selection from "The Pinafore . " The vocalists were Bros . T . B . Laxton , J .
Herbert Marshall , S . W . ; E . P . Steeds , J . W . ; and A . E . Preston , Sec . Bros . George Matt , W . 1 U ., and J . B . Waring each gave recitations , and it need hardly be said that the efforts of all these brethren were very greatly enjoyed . The Leicester brethren returned by a special train leaving Loughborough at 11 o ' clock p . m .

presidency of the new W . M . Host Widnall , of the Bull ' s Head Hotel , even excelling himself in his always admirable catering . The repast being over , the W . M . in brief , but appropriate terms , proposed the toasts of " The Queen and the Craft , " and "The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , " which it is unnecessaiy to say were both drunk with the usual Masonic lovaltv .

Deputy Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom , and the Grand Lodge of England , which was also very cordially drunk . Bro . Vaughan , P . M ., proposed ' * The R . W . Prov . Grand Master , the Earl Ferrers , and the Officers of the Prov . Grand Lodge , " coupled with the names of VV . Bro . | - Partridge , Deputy Prov . G . M ., and Bro . Michie , P . G . S . D . Bro . Vaughan remarked that he was quite sure it was a source of the greatest gratification to every brother

in the province to find Bro . Partridge promoted to the high rank which he now so worthily held , that of Deputy Prov . Grand Master , and they would all heartily congratulate Bro . Michie , too , upon his recent appointment to provincial office . VV . Bro . Partridge on rising to respond was greeted with much enthusiasm . He acknowledged the toast in brief ,
but appropriate terms , and expressed the pleasure it had afforded him to witness the very complimentary manner in which the Howe and Charnwood Lodges had that day received the representatives of the Prov . Grand Lodge . He also thanked the brethren for their very kind congratulations of himself , and hoped he should be able satisfactorily to discharge the duties of the office to which he had been so
generously appointed . Bro . Michie also briefly responded . Bro . Walton Wilkinson , I . P . M ., next proposed " The Health of the new VV . M ., Bro . Charles Oliver , " of whom he spoke in the highest terms of regard both as a Mason and in his private capacity . The Worshipful Master , on rising to acknowledge the
toast , was greeted in the heartiest possible manner . He sincerely thanked the brethren of the Howe and Charnwood Lodge for the distinguished honour they had that day conferred upon him , and trusted that at the expiration of his year of office he should be able to congratulate himself that he had , at least , done his best to merit the confidence which they had all so kindly placed in him . He had the
satisfaction of feeling that whenever he required it he might fully rely upon the assistance of the experienced body of Past Masters who belonged to the lodge . He also took that opportunity of acknowledging the great additional compliment which had that day been paid to him by the attendance of such a numerous gathering of brethren from other lodges , both in and out of the province .
The VVorshipful Master , in very eulogistic terms , then proposed " The Health of the Installing Master , VV . Bro . C . J . Wilkinson , P . P . G . P ., P . M ., " special reference being made to the very able and impressive manner in which Bro . Wilkinson had now for several years acted in the same capacity at the Howe and Charnwood festivals . Bro . C . J . Wilkinson briefly responded , and expressed
the gratification it always gave him to render to the Craft any services in his power . Bro . the Rev . John Bird , P . M ., briefly proposed "The l . P . M . and Past Masters of the Lodge , " which was suitably responded by Bro . W . Wilkinson , l . P . M . Bro . Vial , P . M ., P . P . G . O ., proposed " The Visiting Brethren , " coupled with the names of Bros . Bland , S .
Parkes , and T . Oliver , each of whom acknowledged the compliment . The VVorshipful Master proposed " The Officers of the Lodge , expressing the utmost confidence that they would each in their various capacities afford him every assistance in conducting the business of the lodge during his year of office .
Bros . Marshall , S . W ., and Lowenstein , J . D ., acknowledged the toast . Bro . the Rev . VV . R . Hurd proposed in very complimentary terms "The Musical Brethren , " which was drunk with much enthusiasm , and acknowledged in appropriate terms by Bros . Laxton and Wykes . The proceedings during the evening were enjoyably
varied by some excellent vocal and instrumental music , recitations , & e , Bro . T . B . Laxton , Prov . G . Organist , having specially arranged a capital musical programme , which was very elegantly printed in a separate form , surmounted with the arms of the Howe and Charnwood Lodge —those of Earl Howe . The menu , which was also very artistic , bore on the back an excellent cabinet-sized
photograph of the new VV . M . the musical party consisted of Bros . Henry Nicholson ( flute and piccolo ) , T . A . Wykes ( bassoon ) , and Barrow ( piano ) . These brethren gave at intervals very charming performances of selections of English and Scotch airs , and a special selection from "The Pinafore . " The vocalists were Bros . T . B . Laxton , J .
Herbert Marshall , S . W . ; E . P . Steeds , J . W . ; and A . E . Preston , Sec . Bros . George Matt , W . 1 U ., and J . B . Waring each gave recitations , and it need hardly be said that the efforts of all these brethren were very greatly enjoyed . The Leicester brethren returned by a special train leaving Loughborough at 11 o ' clock p . m .
