M ., " said no man bail scived a longer apprenticeshi p to Alasonry and earned his present position mure than Bro . Walmsley had , having been a member of the Craft seventeen years ; and under these circumstances , and from the fact that he must have seen during that period belter and worse working in the
lodge than was at present performed , and belter and wors ; social boards , there was every reason to believe , with such experience , he would make an excellent W . AI . Hro . Dawson concluded by asking the brethren to stand to their glasses and drink Bto . Walnisley ' s health , hoping he would nave a happy and prosperous year of ollice . The invitation was cordially responded to . 'The W . AL , in reply , said it was a very dillicult task to find language sullicicntly
expressive of the gratitude he felt towards Bro . Dawson for his kind remarks , and to the brethren for so cheerfully responding to the toast . 11 was certainly one of the happiest moments in his life , and he thanked them all most sincerely for the kindness ami cordiality evinced towards himself . Bro . J . L . Hine , P . P . S . G . W ., in proposing " The Alasonic Charities , " made one uf his earnest and heartfelt appeals to the brethren fo * further donations and
subscriptions towards these grand Institutions , and remarked that it was to him one of the must dillicult tasks to find anything fresh to say to them on this subject , which he had dilated upon , as many of them were aware , on numerous occasions . Bro . Hine , for the information of the younger brethren , went over the well-beaten track of the history of these Institutions , their income , expenditure , cost of maintaining each boy and girl , and in appealing
individually to every member uf the Craft . lie informed the brethren that in contributing whatever they luuld alford to so noble and charitable an object they would be carrying out what undoubtedly was the essence and pure principles of Freemasonry . Bro . Hine also informed the brethren that a very gratifying sight had been witnessed in that hall the night previous , which was the entertainment of a number of indigent and aged Freemasons and widows of
Freemasons to a tea and supper , lt was a very touching and yet satisfactory spcctricle to witness these dtd people enjoying themselves . The chair , Bro . Hine said , was taken by an old man , eighty years of age , and who , many years ago , had initiated him ( Bro . I line ) into Freemasonry , and another old man present hael been fifty years a Alason . It was such sights as these lhat opened our beaits to the cause uf Charity , and in concluding his remarks llro . Hine
hoped his appeal would not be made in vain , and left thc matter in their hands . "The Health of the l . P . AL , " Bro . Nicholls , was proposed by the W . AL , who alluded lo his praiseworthy efforts in the cause ot charity during the past year , and the popularity and esteem in which he was held by them alb Bro . humovsome and clever speech , which every one seemed to cl , joy immensel y ; but which , on account of its length we are unfortunately compelled to exclude , feeling at the same time it would be gross injustice to mutilate it by inserting a portion only . of Albany was initiated into Freemasonry . This toast having been received with musical honour ' s , Bro . Dent , iu an amusing and patriotic speech , gave the " Army , Navy , and Reserve Forces . " Bro . Alajor Sewell responded , commenting on the capital physique of the volunteers , as shown at the Edinburgh Review . He thought the men of the regular forces were too young - , and had not the powers uf endurance which characterised our veterans of old .

subscriptions towards these grand Institutions , and remarked that it was to him one of the must dillicult tasks to find anything fresh to say to them on this subject , which he had dilated upon , as many of them were aware , on numerous occasions . Hine , for the information of the younger brethren , went over the well-beaten track of the history of these Institutions , their income , expenditure , cost of maintaining each boy and girl , and in appealing
individually to every member uf the Craft . lie informed the brethren that in contributing whatever they luuld alford to so noble and charitable an object they would be carrying out what undoubtedly was the essence and pure principles of Freemasonry . Hine also informed the brethren that a very gratifying sight had been witnessed in that hall the night previous , which was the entertainment of a number of indigent and aged Freemasons and widows of
Freemasons to a tea and supper , lt was a very touching and yet satisfactory spcctricle to witness these dtd people enjoying themselves . The chair , Bro . Hine said , was taken by an old man , eighty years of age , and who , many years ago , had initiated him ( Bro . of Albany was initiated into Freemasonry . This toast having been received with musical honour ' s , Bro . Dent , iu an amusing and patriotic speech , gave the " Army , Navy , and Reserve Forces . " Bro . Alajor Sewell responded , commenting on the capital physique of the volunteers , as shown at the Edinburgh Review . He thought the men of the regular forces were too young - , and had not the powers uf endurance which characterised our veterans of old .
Nevertheless be did nut fear Ihey would be found wanting in the hour of trial . Bro . Lamonby proposed the next toast , " The Bishop and Clergy uf all Denominations , " and in doing so spoke of ( lie cosmopolitan character of Alasonry , inasmuch as men of all creeds were found ill its ranks , and quite recently he had read in the Freemason of a Wcsleyan minister , in the south of England , who had passed the chair uf his lodge . Hoskins , in responding , dilated on the discovery of Masonic marks amongst the ancient ruins of Calder Abbey , and said the foumlatioii stone uf our most recently erected cathedral at Truro had been laid by the Grand Alaster himself with Masonic honours .
