Horton , late of No . 1536 , and proved unanimous . Mr . B . Hammond , a candidate already approved , being in attendance , was then initiated into Freemasonry , and Bro . J . Stratton was raised j the
W . M . giving the charge in the former and the traditional history in the latter most eloquently . The " Pattison Choir , " consisting of Bros . Clifton , Davies , Swiss , Bull , Murphy , Mills , Ledger , and Rabson , led by Bro . F . Tyler , Mus . Bac , Org ., & c , sang the various chants , anthems , and hymns incidental to the ceremonies in grand style , and we can safely say that in a long . experience we have never
seen or heard anything so impressive , or so worth seeing and hearing as the work done on the occasion under notice . The W . M . read a communication from Prov . Grand Lodge with reference to the ^ ' 1000 proposed to be collected in the province , for the Girls' Festival , by the P . G . M ., Earl Amherst , and Bro . Penfold in response said that the lodge and chapter had given fifty guineas , and the
subscriptions of the members were still coming in , thanks to Bro . Palmer , P . M ., who had the matter in hand . Bro . Mason , who is voted as the best "Masonic beggar "—we mean canvasser for subscriptions for the Charities—in this district , announced his intention of again standing Steward for the Girls ' and Old People , and asked the biethren to unbutton their pockets , for he meant to take up lists
worthy of the lodge . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren partook of refreshments . Bro . Coupland , in responding for "The P . M . 's , " said he very much feared that the time was fast approaching when he should only be known to them by tradition ; still
be was proud of being-not only a P . M ., but their Treasurer , and in some way making himself useful to the brethren and the lodge . At any rate , he was in a position to give the W . M . advice and assistance should he require it ; and , although the W . M . did not seem to require tither the one or the other at present , yet if ever he should he might depend upon receiving it from the Past Masters in every
case . Bro . Hayes , as an old P . M . of the lodge , could only say that he had never seen the ritual so well worked as he had that evening , although they ( the P . M . ' s ) had all done their work admirably . At any rate , they tried their best to do
so , and maintain the high reputation of the Pattison Lodge for good working . He hoped by-and-bye that they would have better accommodation for the performance of the Fourth Degree—a Degree that had its part in Masonic matters as at present constituted , and that being a recognised fact , it was only right that proper accommodation
Ar01102
should be found for it . At present they had no room to entertain their friends and visitors comfortably , or as they should like ; but he trusted that would be remedied shortly . Bro . Butter did not know why the VV . M . should couple the toast with only three names and leave the rest out . It was an important toast , because the P . M . ' s were really the
servants of the lodge—servants because they had been placed in the position they occupied especially to serve . The honour conferred upon them was an honour that entailed service , and , as servants , they were proud of the distinction and were ever ready to do any service for the happiness of the brethren or the prosperity of the lodge . The P . M . 's were also like the modest little violets " born to blush
unseen , " and as the violets , sheltered and hidden away from the gaze , loaded the air with perfume , so the Past Masters did many a service that never come to the knowledge of the majority of the brethren . It might also be said that they were like china ornaments , more ornamental than useful , yet he could assure them that the services rendered by the Past Masters bore fruit although the blossom might not be
seen . He concluded by proposing the toast of " The VV . M ., " and hoped he might have a triumphant year of office , and that he might end it with the same eclat that had up to the present time attended it . The VV . M . said it had been his wish that the toast of his health should have been omitted that evening , as several of the usual toasts had been . In return for their kindness he
assured them that he was deeply conscious of the obligations he was under that the ritual and working should be carried out in accordance with the traditions ot the Pattison Lodge . He was most anxious also to do his duty , both in the lodge and in his daily life , in such a manner that not a single fault could be found with him , and if every Mason did that , it
would be one of the grandest things in the world . He should discharge his duty to the best of his abilities , and trusted to meet with and merit their assistance and approval . Several other toasts were honoured , and some splendid singing by Bros . Batchelor , Clifton , Hammond , Lloyd , Hobson , and others added a rare charm to the festive hours .
LOOE . —Lodge St . Anne ( No . 970 ) . —The annual meeting of the above lodge was held in the Masonic Hall on Wednesday , the 4 th inst . The VV . M . elect , Bro . R .
