desire to do our part towards creating a permanent record of such event in his Masonic history by placing his portrait before our readers . We shall be pleased to furnish Secretaries of lodges and others who may take an interest in our project whatever information may be desired as to our proposed method of procedure .

The present week has been , on the one hand , one of sad remembrances to the Queen and her family , and , on the other , one of joy and gladness , and in both cases her Majesty and her children will find the feelings of her subjects everywhere throughout the extent of her vast empire in sympathy with her and them . To-morrow

( Saturday ) is the first anniversary of the death of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , who had only completed his 28 th year . The circumstances amid which the event happened were mournful in the extreme . The Duke ' s wedding-day had been fixed ; only a few days previously he had been in the enjoyment of his usual health ; when on a sudden he took cold , and

within a week he passed away , to the deep grief of his parents , her Majesty , his betrothed , and the whole nation . The memory of the great calamity must be very painful in the Royal circle at Sandringham , where the Prince and Princess of Wales have been staying in complete privacy for some time past . « * »

On the other hand , there has been great rejoicing at Sigmaringen , where the Princess Marie , eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh , and a granddaughter of her Gracious Majesty , was married to

Prince Ferdinand , heir to the throne of Roumania , on Tuesday . The nuptials were attended by the King of Roumania , the Emperor William of Germany , the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh , the Duke and Duchess of Connaught , and the representatives of the Queen , the Prince and Princess of Wales , and other

members of our Royal Family . The ceremony was twice solemnised—in the Roman Catholic Church , the bridegroom being of the Romish faith ; and according to the rites of the Anglican Church ; the bride being a Protestant . The town was filled with visitors of

distinction , and all the arrangements for the event were carried out with marvellous success , and the hearty good wishes of the British people will have been uttered on all sides for the future happiness of the Prince and his fair young bride .

* * * t We remind oiir readers that the Quarterly General Court of the Boys' School will take place at Freemasons' Hall to-day ( Friday ) at 4 p . m . The principal business to be . transacted , will concern the election which is held in April next—the declaration ot the

vacancies to be competed for , and the list of candidates to compete for them . As for the Girls' School Quarterly Court , which was held on Thursday , and of which a report will be found in another page , it will suffice if we state that the number of candidatesincluding the five remaining from October last—was settled at 32 , while the declared number of vacancies is 21 .

* * » The 15 th November last was quite a brilliant day , and will long be remembered as such in the annals of Toronto Masonry . A new lodge room was dedicated to the purposes of our Society by Bro . J . M . Gibson , Q . C , M . W . G . M ., who was accompanied on his visit by

Bros . J . Ross Robertson , Immediate Past G . M . ; J . J . Mason , G . Sec ; Barker , S . G . W . ; F . Manley , G . Reg . ; A . H . S . Ardagh , S . G . D . ; Charlton , G . S . B . ; Rev . Walter Reid , G . Chap . ; and others . On completing the ceremony of dedication , the Grand Master found himself under the necessity of leaving , and the

new lodge which isnamed the Stanley , after Bro . Lord Stanley of Preston , Governor-General of Canada , was consecrated by Bro . J . Ross Robertson , P . G . M . The event , which caused quite a sensation in Masonic circles , passed off very successfully , the festive proceedings , with which the day was brought to a close , being in harmony with the events which had gone before .

* » * The Grand Chapter of Minnesota has , according to the latest returns , 54 chapters on the roll , with' an aggregate of subscribing members amounting lo 4121 ,

It appears to be in a healthy condition in the matter of means , and the chapters are faithful in the discharge of their duties . Comp . Isaac P . Durfee is the present G . H . P ., while Comp . Thomas Montgomery remains at his post as Grand Secretary .

RULE 130 OF THE BOOK OF CONSTITUTIONS . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , I can answer the query of " R . VV . O . " in your issue of the 31 st Dec . respecting Rule 130 of the Book

of Constitutions . I have it in the hand-writing of our late lamented Grand Secretary , Col . Shadwell H . Clerke . A Warden is eligible to be elected , although he has not at the time of his election served the office 12 calendar months . By the date of the installation he will have served a year . I have not the letter by me

at the moment , but I could , if necessary , find it . To quote the late Grand Secretary ' s words from memory , he said " the day of election is really the day ot selection , and a lodge year is not necessarily strictly 365 days .
