Bro . R . F . Gould said that a passing word might be permissible with regard to the most recent additions to the Outer Circle . There were 49 Grand Lodges in the United States , and under most of them some worthy brother was appointed annually to survey the proceedings of the other Grand Lodges , and to make such a summary of them as would be useful in the jurisdiction he was representing . These brethren were called the"Reporters on Foreign

Correspondence , " and they were ordinarily selected from among the Past Grand Masters of the States . One of the most learned members of the " Corps , " was Bro . Dr . J oseph Robinson , P . G . M . Illinois , whose name headed the list that had just been presented , and he ( Bro . Gould ) thought it was a matter for congratulation whenever any member of the class of which Bro . Robbins was so distinguished an ornament , sought admission into their Correspondence

Circle . The W . M . in the chair , after alluding in feeling terms to the recent death of Bro . W . Mathew Williams , J . D ., called upon Bro . Dr . B . W . Richardson , F . R . S ., who , in an eloquent and touching address , delivered a elogium on the deceased , paving a high tribute to his worth as a writer , teacher , scientist , man , and Freemason . Bro . Gould having briefly expressed the appreciation and interest of the brethren , a few words were added by Bro . E . T .

Edwards with respect to the scientific provision of the late Bro . Williams in the matter of electric lighting , and the Secretary was directed to communicate to the family of the deceased , the melancholy satisfaction it had afforded all the brethren present , to listen to the admirable address of Dr . Richardson . The Rev . C . II . Maldon then exhibited his

model of the Tabernacle , the clearness of the discription , and the beauty of the model itself being much admired . A paper on the Tabernacle was then read by the S . W ., after which the W . M . c > pressed the thanks of the lodge to both lecturers , who briefly responded . Bro . Sturgeon exhibited a very handsome and ancient French Master Mason ' s

apron . There being no further business , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Holborn Restaurant for refreshment .

Provincial Meetings.

The toasts of " The Queen and the Craft , " " The Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " having been received with due honour , The Worshipful Master next proposed " The Health of the R . W . Lord Henniker , Provincial Grand Master . " He congratulated the Province of Suffolk on having as its head

one of the best known andjmost deservedly popular noblemen in the county . Lord Henniker was not merely ornamental , as there was not a more painstaking or hard-working Provincial Grand Master to be found , or one who tried to make himself so intimately connected with the details of work in the province . Bro . Waskett , in proposing the toast of the evening , paid

a high tribute to Bro . Mayhew s abilities as a Mason , & c , and "The W . M . ' s Health " was drunk with the greatest enthusiasm . In reply , Bro . Mayhew expressed his appreciation of the goodwill of the brethren so forcibly demonstrated , and assured them he would iise his utmost endeavours to further the cause of Masonry , and to follow in the footsteps of

those thai preceded him . ' In responding for "The Visitors , " Bro . Jaquet complimented the lodge upon the work he had witnessed that evening performed by Bro . Waskett . He also congratulated the lodge on having elected Bro . Mayhew to occupy the chair of K . S . Bro . Mayhew and himself had been intimate friends for 25 years , and he felt that after such a length of

time he was qualified to give an opinion concerning Bro . Mayhew ' s many excellent qualities . Doubtless there were some brethren in the room had known him longer , as Bro . Mayhew was reared in their midst , but he felt sure that they would all endorse what he was about to say , that Bro . Mayhew was a good man , a true friend , and that it was certain he would be a worthy successor of the many

illustrious brethren who had preceded him in the chair of the Adair Lodge . The other toasts of "The Past Masters , " "The Initiate , " "The Masonic Charities , " and "The Officers of the Lodge" were duly honoured . Between the toasts many of the brethren sang songs , and a most successful evening was brought to a conclusion with the Tyler ' s toast .

P . M ., F . G . S ., was the Installing Master , assisted by Bru . J . R . Fawcett , who gave the addresses . The customary banquet followed , and several songs and recitations were given in pleasing style by Bros . Turner , Gamble , and Dr . Forshaw , the latter of whom also recited an original sonnet to the newly-installed W . M .

David Burston . thc S . W ., was installed W . M . for the ensuing year as successor to Bro . VV . T . Baker . There was a good muster of brethren , and the visitors included Bros . James Bond , P . CAMBRIDGE . Scientific Lodge ( No . 88 ) . —The annual meeting of this old lodge , whose records go back to A . D . 1754 , was held on Monday , the 9 th inst ., at the Lion Hotel , when the work was limited to the installation of the VV . M . presented . Bro . W . P . Spalding then proceeded to instal as W . M . for the ensuing year Bro . William Beales Redfarn , P . P . G . Purs ., and he discharged the duties in a highly efficient manner . The newly-installed W . M . thereupon appointed and invested his officers as under : Bros .

Provincial Meetings.

W . P . Spalding , P . P . G . Supt . of Wks ., I . P . M . ; C H . Banham , P . P . G . Supt . of Wks ., S . W . ; John L . Rutter , P . A . G . D . C , J . W . ; T . Nichols , P . M ., P . P . S . Org . ; John H . Moyes , I . G . ; B . W . Beales , sen ., P . P . G . Treas ., Stwd . ; and C . H . Ellis , P . G . Tyler , Tyler . At the close of the investiture , which the W . M . performed with an appropriate address to each officer ; the charges to the W . M ., the Wardens , and the brethren were impressively given by Bro . Frank Piggott , P . M ., P . P . S . G . D ., in the unavoidable absence of Bro . A . H . Moyes , D . P . G . M .,

through indisposition . The Prov . Grand Master then , on behalf of the lodge , presented a very handsome Past Masters jewel to Bro . W . P . Spalding , I . P . M ., and gracefully alluded to the zeal which Bro . Spalding displayed in all Masonic matters , whether in hunting up some interesting but obscure point in Masonry , in the well-ruling and efficient working of a lodge , or in editing the Provincial Year Book .

Bro . W . P . Spalding , in acknowledging the gift , said that it would ever remain one of his most highly-prized possessions , as it indicated the kindly good feeling and esteem of the brethren which he believed he enjoyed at the termination of his year of office . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to a recherche banquet , over which Bro . Redfarn , W . M .,

presided in a most happy manner . Bros . W . Masters and E . M . Money responded for "The Grand Officers . " The Provincial Grand Master , in responding toithe toast of his health , congratulated the lodge upon the unanimity which appeared to prevail , upon the largeness of the company assembled to do honour to the newly-elected W . M .,

and to the excellence of their work , more particularly complimenting the Installing Master , whose work was most ably supplemented by Bro . Frank Piggott , whose impressive rendering of those beautiful charges at the installation ceremony would not soon be forgotten by those who had the privilege of hearing them . Alluding further to the work of the lodge during the past year , the P . G . M . was glad to

hear that a Degree had been conferred on every lodge night ; and perhaps this was all that was desired by a lodg e which boasted of such remote antiquity , and which was so exclusive . that it limited its brethren to its own number ( No . 88 ) . Competition for the vacancies must necessarily be keen , and admission into the lodge would perhaps be more difficult than into a lodge such as the Isaac Newton

( Unive ^ ity ) Lodge , No . 859 , which possibly limited its brethren to its own number . "The Health of the D . P . G . M . and the Prov . Grand Officers , " given by Bro . A . J . Dimmock , P . M ., was acknowledged by Bros . Rev . L . R . Tuttiett , P . G . Chap ., and J . Sheldrick , P . G . R . ; and all the speakers expressed sincere regret at the enforced absence of Bro . A . H .

Moyes , D . P . G . M ., through ill-health , and wished him a speedy recovery . Bro . W . P . Spalding , I . P . M ., in submitting the toast of "The W . M ., " remarked that the lodge had just conferred upon Bro . Redfarn the highest honour at their disposal , and in doing so had followed the example of the citizens of Cambridge , who had on more than one occasion elected Bro . Redfarn to the highest office in the borough—that of

Mayor ; and as the citizens of Cambridge had been justified in their expectations by the admirable manner in which Bro . Redfarn had fulfilled the office of Chief Magistrate , so would the brethren of the lodge ( who had done honour to themselves by the wisdom of their choice ) be justified in their anticipations that Bro . Redfarn would be as successful in the discharge of his Masonic as of his civic duties .

The Worshipful Master , in acknowledging the compliment , said he was quite aware of his own deficiences , but having been honoured with the confidence of the lodge , he promised them with all sincerity that his best abilities should be devoted to the satisfactory discharge of the responsibilities of his new ofiice . The toast of " The Visiting Brethren " was responded to

by Bros . Rev . T . B . Nichols , P . S . G . W . Northumberland ; H . E . Greef , W . M . 441 ; and F . A . Hazledine , W . M . 2098 ; whilst "The Health of the Officers of the Lodge " was suitably acknowledged by Bro . C . H . Banham , S . W . The pleasure of the evening was much enhanced by the harmony contributed by Bros . T . B . Nichols , W . F . Miller , and other brethren . The jewel was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning .

CHESTER . Clarence Lodge , ( No . 2386 ) . —The third installation of this lodge , which , it will be remembered , was founded two years ago to meet the wants of the m litary brethren of the head-quarters and military staff in Chester and neighbourhood took place on Thursday evening , the Sth inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Queen-street . In the

presence of Bro . Sir Horatio Lloyd , U . P . G . M ., and a large gathering of members , Bro . Francis Edward Cooper , Capt . R . A ., A . D . C , G . O . C ., N . W . D ., was installed as Worshipful Master , the Installing Master being Bro . W . H . Finchett , P . P . S . G . D ., who impressively rendered the various ceremonies . The VV . M . invested the following brethren as officers : Bros . Major Ford , Brigade Major ,

A recherche banquet was afterwards sat down to , among those present in addition to the brethren already mentioned , being Bros . J . Salmon , P . P . S . G . W . ; Col . Charles S . Dean , W . M . 12 S 9 , P . P . J . G . D . ; Herbert Ellis , P . M . 721 , P . G . Org . ; T . Knowles , P . M . 721 , P . P . A . G . D . C . j H . Taylor , W . M . 425 ; M . Johnson , J . W . 425 ; G . F . Bro . R .

CAMBRIDGE . Scientific Lodge ( No . 88 ) . —The annual meeting of this old lodge , whose records go back to A . M . performed with an appropriate address to each officer ; the charges to the W .
