The Portsmouth Times says that "during his residence in Liverpool , twelve years , being connected with several learned societies there , he has made himself very popular ,

and his departure is considered to be a loss , not only to the congregration , but also to the community at large . " THE "CLACHAN ; " ITS WHISKIES , WINES , & C—The outcry against alcoholic drink would carry with it far less weight were the liquors supplied of a pure and wholesome character . Unfortunately , far too much of what is sold to the public has been doctored to such a degree that it bears

no resemblance to what it professes to represent . Whenever , therefore , a house is found where wines and spirits of the finest quality are to be had , it is just as well to make a note of it . The " Clachan , " 16 , Sherborne-lane , King William-street , E . C , is one of these houses . Its speciality is Scotch whisky , which is obtained from the bonded stores in Edinburgh , Glasgow , and Leith , of Mr . John Stewart , who

is reputed to be the largest holder of whisky in Scotland . The prices charged for the different kinds or blends are the same as throughout Scotland , and only the best whiskies , such as the " Glenalbyn Blend , " the special "Clachan Blend , " "Dewof Ben Nevis , " "Glenlivot , " "Islay , " & c , are purchasable . But the business of the "Clachan" is not confined to this particular spirit . Wines from the wood , which are guaranteed to be sound and of an excellent

character , as well as other spirits , and the best known liqueurs are also on sale , so that everyone may gratify his particular vanity . At all events , considering the high quality which is guaranteed , and the prices charged , we arc satisfied the public will not be slow in extending its custom to a house which so richly deserves it . We may add that the Secretary , will supply any further information that may be desired .

We understand that Bro . W . J . Hughan , P . G . D ., has forwarded his resignation as Honorary S . G . W . of the G . L . of Quebec , in consequence of the issue of the Proclamation ot the Grand Master of that Grand Lodge on January 15 th , 1 SS 5 , which we gave in our issue of last week . Bro . Hughan does so on the ground that whilst he considers the three English Lodges in Montreal would have

acted wisely had they joined the Grand Lodge of their own Dominion , yet so long as they elect to remain under the Grand Lodge of England , they have a perfect right to do so , and are entitled to the support of all regular Grand Lodges throughout the world . Bro . A . J . Altman ( Peace and Harmony Lodge , No . 60 ) has been elected Chairman of the City of London School Committee .

Bro . Dick Radclyffe , of High Holborn , will have the direction of the International Forestry Exhibition at the Alexandra Palace , Muswell-hill . ALHAMBRA . — Mdlle . Oceana , " the beautiful Empress of the Slack Wire , " has been exclusively engaged to appear at the Alhambra , and will make her first

appearance there , on Monday next , the 16 th inst . On Monday the Prince of Wales dined at the residence of the Duchesse de Luynes , at Cannes , and afterwards witnessed a regatta and some pigeon shooting . In the evening he was present at a fele given by the Duke of Mecklenburg . Bro . the Lord Mayor referred at the Court of

Aldermen , on Tuesday last , in very feeling terms to the extremely sudden death of the City Solicitor , Sir Thomas Nelson , who for 23 years had served the Corporation of London most faithfully and zealously . Bro . Sir J . McGarel Hogg , Bart ., M . P ., presided at the regular weekly meeting on Friday , the 6 th inst ., of the Metropolitan Board of Works , among the

A new Masonic Hall was opened at South Shields on Monday evening , the 9 th inst ., the building , site , and furniture having cost a sum of £ 2840 . It is the new home of the St . Hilda's Lodge , 240 , and its erection and consecration will constitute a memorable epoch in its history . We shall give a full account in our next number .

The annual ball of the Cri pplegate Pension Society , which was held on Thursday , the 5 th inst ., at the Cannon-street Hotel , was honoured with the presence of Bro . the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress , Bro . Sir Robert Lloyd Lindsay , who is Secretary to the National Society for aid to the sick and wounded in War , has announced that the society has recently acquired possession of a steam-launch drawing only 2 \ feet water , which on the 10 th January was christened the "Queen Victoria , " and will ply on the Nile under the

superintendence of Asst . Commissionary-General Young , and in the medical charge of Mr . E . F . White , of St . Thomas's Hospital . The service of this launch has been accepted by Bro . General Lord Wolseley , who considers it will be a welcome contribution , especially at low water , to the comfort nnd welfare of his men .

W ., who has been visiting Egypt , is expected to be back in London on Tuesday next . On his return journey he was entertained at a municipal banquet at Naples , in recognition of the part he played as Lord Mayor in raising a fund for the relief of the victims to the cholera .

A distinguished Amateur Minstrel entertainment

in aid of the Leeds Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution , will take place in the Albert Hall , Leeds , on Friday , the 20 th inst ., by the I . M . P . S ., ( Itinerant Miscellaneous Performance Society ) of Manchester . The committee for arranging the above , consists of one or more members from each of the Leeds lodges , the original promoter being Bro . Mortimer Yates , P . M . 1012 .

A third Masonic Benevolent Association has just been started in connection with the Brownrigg Lodge of Instruction , No . 1638 , though all Masons are eligible to join . Two have already been worked out , with the result that 600 guineas have been subscribed to the Masonic Charities . At the formal constitution of the Brownrigg Lodge of Instruction , on Monday night , Bro . the Rev . C . W . Arnold

expressed the pleasure it gave him to find how nobly the great principle ot Charity was carried out by the brethren at Kingston . We have received from Bro . Albert Young , of 17 , Regent-street , two excellent photographs of the Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , which are not only admirable , as far as "technic , " but more than usually happy

in the way in which the expression is caught , and thoroughly characteristic in pose . The esteemed Grand Secretary , Bro . Shadwell H . Gierke , has also given Bro . Young a sitting , and the result is equally satisfactory . These portraits have been produced in both cabinet and panel sizesthe latter being very effective .

Unfortunately , far too much of what is sold to the public has been doctored to such a degree that it bears

But the business of the "Clachan" is not confined to this particular spirit . Wines from the wood , which are guaranteed to be sound and of an excellent

character , as well as other spirits , and the best known liqueurs are also on sale , so that everyone may gratify his particular vanity . At all events , considering the high quality which is guaranteed , and the prices charged , we arc satisfied the public will not be slow in extending its custom to a house which so richly deserves it . We may add that the Secretary , will supply any further information that may be desired .

We understand that Bro . W . J . Hughan , P . G . D ., has forwarded his resignation as Honorary S . G . W . of the G . L . of Quebec , in consequence of the issue of the Proclamation ot the Grand Master of that Grand Lodge on January 15 th , 1 SS 5 , which we gave in our issue of last week . Bro . Hughan does so on the ground that whilst he considers the three English Lodges in Montreal would have

acted wisely had they joined the Grand Lodge of their own Dominion , yet so long as they elect to remain under the Grand Lodge of England , they have a perfect right to do so , and are entitled to the support of all regular Grand Lodges throughout the world . A new Masonic Hall was opened at South Shields on Monday evening , the 9 th inst ., the building , site , and furniture having cost a sum of £ 2840 . It is the new home of the St . Hilda's Lodge , 240 , and its erection and consecration will constitute a memorable epoch in its history . We shall give a full account in our next number .

A third Masonic Benevolent Association has just been started in connection with the Brownrigg Lodge of Instruction , No . 1638 , though all Masons are eligible to join . Two have already been worked out , with the result that 600 guineas have been subscribed to the Masonic Charities . At the formal constitution of the Brownrigg Lodge of Instruction , on Monday night , Bro . the Rev . C . W . Arnold

expressed the pleasure it gave him to find how nobly the great principle ot Charity was carried out by the brethren at Kingston . We have received from Bro . Albert Young , of 17 , Regent-street , two excellent photographs of the Grand Master , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , which are not only admirable , as far as "technic , " but more than usually happy

in the way in which the expression is caught , and thoroughly characteristic in pose . The esteemed Grand Secretary , Bro . Shadwell H . Gierke , has also given Bro . Young a sitting , and the result is equally satisfactory . These portraits have been produced in both cabinet and panel sizesthe latter being very effective .
