W . Burrell , M . P . ) and his Deputy ( Bro . J . Henderson Scott , P . G . D . ) were prevented by other engagements from attending , but there was a numerous and representative gathering of Masons from various lodges in the province and elsewhere . Bro . Lloyd , I . P . M . ; W . H . Barrett , S . W . ; H . E . Breach , J . W . ; Davey , P . M ., Chap . ; J . H . Hawes , Sec . ; G . C . Inkpen , S . D . ; W . Doman , J . D . ; Geo . Smith , P . Budden and Fielden , Stwds . ; and W . A . Beatson , Tyler . A severe domestic bereavement prevented the attendance of Bro . St . Clair , P . M ., P . P . G . J . W ., who had been reelected to the office of Treasurer , which he had held continuously since 1 S 70 ; and the state of his health kept Bro . W . Dean away , or he would have been invested as Organist . At the conclusion of the lodge business , in the course of
which a P . M . ' s jewel was presented to Bro . Lloyd in recognition of the manner in which he had filled the chair during the year , the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , where they partook of a sumptuous repast , most admirably served by Bro . P . Purchase , of the Globe Hotel . The newly-installed W . M . presided , and gave the usual loyal and Masonic toasts . The toast of " The W . M . " was proposed by the Mayor
of Chichester , Bro . Raper , who spoke of the distinguished services to Masonry which have been rendered by various Dukes of Richmond , and also by the Earl of March , who himself recently filled the chair of the Union Lodge , as well as that of G . S . W . of England . Bro . Raper also spoke of the good qualities of the W . M ., and evoked much applause by an eloquent allusion to the midnight march on the fortications of Tel-el-Kebir , at which Lord Algernon was
present . The toast was warmly welcomed , and was responded to in a happy strain . Several other toasts were given , interspersed with songs from Bros . R . Raynham , 170 G , of the choir of St . Paul's Cathedral ; Miles , Kinsey , Fielden , Breach , and a telling
recitation by Bro . Charge . Bro . Raynham , whose singing was highly appreciated , also acted as accompanist . It should be added that the arrangements of the Stewards , Bros . Buquet and Wyatt , were in every way perfect ; and the room was tastefully decorated with a choice collection of palms and other greenhouse productions by the kindness of Bro . H . H . Moore .

Jelly , P . M . 976 , P . P . G . S . W . ; Jas . Greenfield , P . M . 24 G , P . P . G . D . C . Gloster ; and others . Lodge having been opened and the summons read , the minutes of the last regular lodge were confirmed , and also the lodge of instruction minutes read . Apology for the absence of the very esteemed D . P . G . M ., Bro . Else , was made , through indisposition , to the regret of the brethren :
as also from Bro . E . T . Payne , Prov . Treas ., P . G . D . Eng ., and many others from unavoidable circumstances . The Worshipful Master said he had received a letter of regret of enforced absence from their esteemed Bro . Dr . H . Hopkins , P . M ., & c , who for the first time during his Masonic career of 37 years was compelled , through ill health , to be absent from the installation ceremony . He ,
however , asked Bro . Ruble ' s acceptance of a beautiful Masonic chart , designed and executed by himself , the chart being much admired . Bro . Rubie desired thus publicly to express his great thanks to Bro . Hopkins , P . M ., for his many acts of kindness , at the same time he was instructed by Bro . Dr . Hopkins to ask the lodge ' s acceptance of bound volumes of
the Freemason from 18 G 9 to 1 SS 4 for the lodge library . These were received by acclamation , and a vote of thanks earned . Bros . T . Wilton , P . M ., and C . W . Radway , P . M ., presented Bro . T . Ames , as the W . M . elect , to Bro . T . P . Ashley , the Installing Master . After the usual preliminaries a Board of Installed Masters was regularly opened , and Bro . T . Ames was duly installed in the chair of K . S .
according to ancient custom . The loving cup , presented by Bro . Dr . Hopkins , having received its customary attention , the Board was regularly closed . The W . W ., after the usual salutations , invested and appointed his officers , viz .: Bros . J . Rubie , I . P . M . ; W . Peach , S . W . ; T . E . Wilton , J . W . ; T . P . Ashley , P . Baldwin , S . D . ; W . G . Gregory , J . D . ; j . E . Wilton , I . G . ; W . Foote , Org . ; T . Brown and W . H . Reynolds , Stewards ; and S . Bigwood , Tyler . The Installing Master gave the addresses to the ) W . M ., Wardens , and brethren in Bro . Ashley ' s genial and Masonic manner , to the appreciation of all present . The W . M . returned thanks for the honour conferred upon him , and trusted to earn the approbation of his brethren . Bro . Ashley announced that , in
accordance with Bro . White s bequest , it was the time to present the outgoing W . M . with the jewel provided by Bro . White ' s liberality , the brethren having testified that Bro . Rubie had merited the distinction . Bro . Ashley remarked that this year was the 50 th of Bro . White ' s membership , and he had shown his regard for his mother lodge bv handing down a iewel , to be called Bro . White ' s
jewel , to future Masters . The Trustees had had a specially designed jewel prepared , which would be the means of keeping one uniform pattern , and he ( Bro . Ashley ) had now the pleasure of pinning it on the 1 . P . M . ' s breast . Bro . Rubie , in response , expressed his gratification that
he should be the first to participate in the kindly gift of his old and esteemed friend , Bro . Edmund White . The Treasurer , advancing to the dais , said : W . M . and brethren , we have already expressed our great regret that Bro . Dr . Hopkins , P . M ., is not with us this evening ; but he has not forgotten the old lodge . I now stand as his

representative , and will read portion of a letter I have received from him , the other part being of a personal character , and , brethren , you will soon learn to what extent our dear Bro . Hopkins is participating with us in our lodge meeting to-day : — " 14 , Belvedere , Bath , "January 31 st , 1 SS 5 . " Dear Bro . Ashley ,
"Some years ago , in drawing up my will , I made provision for a legacy to each of the Craft lodges of which I have been W . M ., sufficient to give to each the rank of Vice-President of one of the Masonic Benevolent Institutions , and to endow every chair with votes in perpetuity . I added a clause to the effect that should I pay this amount during my life the legacy is to be cancelled . By care and economy in not living up to my income I am now in a
position to offer to the Royal Cumberland Lodge a donation of one hundred guineas , to be paid in the name of the lodge , to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution for Widows , of which it will thus become a Vice-President , and the W . M ., I . P . M ., Treasurer , Secretary , D . of C , Senior and Junior Wardens , Senior and Junior Deacons , and I . G . will each have votes in perpetuity . Kindly inform me whether my proposal is accepted , and , if so , I will at once send you
a cheque for the amount . I must , however , accompany it with one request , namely , that the members use their influence to obtain the annuity for the widow of my late esteemed friend Dr . Tunstall , whose name is on the list for the election in May next . I shall feel obliged if you will abstain from mentioning the contents of this note to anyone before the communication of them to the lodge . " Believe me , yours very sincerely and fraternally ,
" HEHRV HOPKINS , P . P . G . S . W . Warwick , " P . M . 41 , 43 , 95 S , & c . " Bro . Ashley , after reading the foregoing , said : Brethren , again we have the strongest evidence of the great interest our Bro . Dr . H . Hopkins takes in the old lodge , and he felt assured they would thoroughly appreciate his exceeding great kindness . Bro . T . Wilton , P . M . ( ex-Mayor of Bath ) , addressing the W . M ., said : This lodge has on very many occasions
during our Bro . Dr . H . Hopkins ' s residence amongst us been the recipient of his great liberality . When we look round this hall , and sec our walls adorned with his handicraft , to him are we largely indebted that our lodge became Vice-Presidents of the Girls' School , and in many directions and ways have we had proof of his love for our Order , and now , to crown all his previous magnanimous gifts , we are surprised by this most handsome donation to the lodge of one hundred guineas to the Widows' Fund . Truly our Bro . Hopkins has carried out the duties of a Mason with
bounteous hand . The following was carried by acclamation : " That the grateful and unanimous thanks of all the brethren present at the installation meeting of the Royal Cumberland Lodge , February 5 th , 1 SS 5 , be conveyed to W . Bro . Dr . H . Hopkins for his highly generous gift to this lodge of one hundred guineas towards the Benevolent Fund , thus qualifying the lodge as Vice-Presidents , and endowing all the chairs in perpetuity . With the sincere wish that Bro . Dr . Hopkins ' s
life may yet be spared for many years of usefulness , Masonically and otherwise . " Votes of thanks to visitors were duly proposed and responded to , and the lodge was closed in harmony , after which the brethren adjourned to the Grand Pump Room Hotel to the banquet , when about 50 sat down , under the W . M . ' s presidency . During the evening Bro . White's loving cup , as well as Bro . Dr . Hopkins's cup , were appreciated .
GUERNSEY . —Mariners Lodge ( No . 168 ) . — The members of the above lodge met on Wednesday , the 4 th inst ., at the Masonic Temple , Le Marchant-street , for their usual monthly meeting , and to listen to a lecture , entitled " Random Notes on Freemasonry , " from W . Bro . Emra Holmes , P . M . 531 and G . I . I . C , 31 . The lodge was opened by the W . M ., Bro . S . Coombes , and the minutes of last regular and emergency meetings were read
and confirmed . The final revision of the bye-laws having been completed , the W . M . introduced the lecturer to the members , who , by the way , did not visit this lodge for the first time , but has been , through his genial and entertaining manner , a welcome visitor for some time past at the meetings and at the festive board . After briefly prefacing the lecture , Bro . Holmes said it would be difficult , nay , almost
impossible , to say all that he could say on our beloved Masonry in the brief hour to which he must limit himself on that occasion ; but he thought he might suggest—for he could do no more than suggest—sufficient to enable some brother better qualified than himself to treat at greater length on the subject of his lecture . He did not pretend to preach any new doctrine , or to have discovered any fresh secret ; but he only aimed at leading his younger brethren
into the same road as he had travelled , to follow the same channels of information to which he had obtained access . He did not profess to be a teacher , but only a student , and he said there might be many before him better qualified than he was to speak on the subject ; but he was sure all would listen with a kindly indulgence to what he advanced , and forgive his zeal if any doubted his discretion . The lecturer then proceeded to trace the antiquity of the Craft
in a powerful and able manner , saying that he was of opinion that there were points of similarity between the ancient mysteries of Egypt and Greece to warrant us in the belief that they were , in fact , a kind of spurious Freemasonry , as Dr . Oliver teaches . He would even go further , and say that there is a strong resemblance to a true Freemasonry in some of them , though veiled and obscured with much that was false and impure . Speaking of Freemasonry
from a Christian point of view , the worshipful lecturer said that Masonry without Christianity , in a Christian country , could not be said to be complete . A brief , but interesting , review of the different degrees in Masonry and their work having been described , the constitution of Grand Lodge and the appointment of Grand Officers were dealt with , the latter in the following words : " I think it will be generally
admitted that the appointments to office are unsatisfactory-Men become members of Grand Lodge of whom the Craft knows nothing , and who , I venture to say , know as liltl " about the Craft ; noblemen are pitch-forked into the \ v . and S . who have never been Masters of lodges , contrary t " the Constitutions , and young gentlemen , simply because they are related to those highest in office , are made rulers of the Craft , the first principles of which they are lamentably ignorant of . Office is almost entirely restricted W

W . Burrell , M . P . ) and his Deputy ( Bro . J . Henderson Scott , P . G . D . ) were prevented by other engagements from attending , but there was a numerous and representative gathering of Masons from various lodges in the province and elsewhere . Bro . Lloyd , the retiring W . M ., presided , and among the P . M . ' s of the lodge present were Bros . Raper , P . P . G . I . W . j A . Smith , P . P . G . S . of W . ;

The ceremony of installation was performed by the retiring W . M . in the most masterly manner , and Lord Algernon subsequently appointed and invested his officers for the year as ' follows : Bros . Lloyd , I . P . M . ; W . H . Barrett , S . W . ; H . E . Breach , J . W . ; Davey , P . M ., Chap . ; J . H . Hawes , Sec . ; G . C . Inkpen , S . D . ; W . Doman , J . D . ; Geo . Smith , P . M ., D . C . ; Buquet , I . G . ;
H . H . Moore .

M ., Treas . ; C . W . Radwav , P . M ., Sec ; T . Wilton , P . M ., D . C ; W . L .
