Report Of The Herts Masonic Charity Committee For The Year 1894-5.

REPORT OF THE HERTS MASONIC CHARITY COMMITTEE FOR THE YEAR 1894-5 .

The Committee have much pleasure in reporting that since the Provincial Grand Lodge meeting in 1894 , they have taken up and carried the cases of three candidates for the Masonic Institutions , viz .: In October , 1894 , for the Boys' School , ( 1 ) Thomas Harold Edward Welch , son of the late Bro . Alfred Welch , of the St . Michael ' s Lodge , No . 2136 , 6 th , with 3188 votes .

( 2 ) Charles Herbert Haddock , son of the late Bro . Samuel Haddock of the King Henry the Eighth Lodge , No . 1757 , Sth with 3147 votes . Welch has been duly admitted to the School , but Haddock being unable to pass the necessary educational standard , is receiving ^ 20 a year for his education outside the Institution . In April , 1895 , for the Girls' School ,

Constance Marian Medcalf , daughter of Bro . James Driver Medcalf , late of the Hertford Lodge , No . 403 , 9 th on the list with 3020 votes . In consequence of representations made to the Committee by the Hon . Secretary , it was resolved to bring under the notice of the Provincial Grand Lodge , at the meeting at St . Albans , the following recommendations of the Committee :

( 1 ) That on the occasion of an election to any of the Masonic Charities , some member of the lodge interested in , or some personal friend of , the candidate shall be present . ( 2 ) That every lodge wishing to participate in the objects of the Association , should , through its representative , forward its votes to the Secretary to use on

behalf of the province . The following are the amounts contributed by the province to the Charities in 1895 : Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , seven Stewards ... . £ 452 3 6 Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , seven Stewards ... 334 19 o Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , eight Stewards ... 333 7 6

ANNUAL SUPPER OF THE EARL OF LATHOM LODGE OF INSTRUCTION No . 1922 .

The annual supper of the above lodge of instruction took place at the Station Hotel , Camberwell New-road , on the 26 th ultimo . Present : Bros . J . Andrews , P . M . 1986 , Preceptor ( in the chair ); C . Plant , W . M . 101 , Deputy Preceptor , and T . R . Cass , P . M . 1320 ( in the vice-chairs ); H . Buckeridge , Wm . Beecroft , P . M . ; C Browne , H . Cohen , F . Lloyd , R . W . Cartwright , W . W . Harris , T . T . Harris ,

W . Orton , R . Rowlands , F . Webster , W . Hill , E . A . Rice , G . W . Niblett , H . A . Stunt , J , Hooper , E . J . Strevens , Freeman , W . Lord , Carpenter , H . C . Turner , J . S . An excellent supper was provided by Bro . R . Weller , P . M ., Treasurer , the worth y host , who personally attended and ministered capitally to the wants of the brethren .

The usual loyal and Masonic toasts having been honoured , The President , Bro . ANDREWS , gave the toast of " Success to the Mother Lodge , " through whose kindness they were able to carry out their various duties in the lod ge of instruction . This was very ably responded to by Bro . GAZE , W . M . 1922 , who thanked the brethren for such a reception , and congratulated the lodge of instruction upon the excellent and proficient workers it was turning out ,

The toast of the evening—that of " Success to the Earl of Lathom Lodge of nstruction "—was proposed by Bro . BUCKERIDGE , who dilated on the many advantages it offered to the brethren , and the number present proved the estimation in which the Preceptor , Bro . Andrews , P . M ., was held . The toast was drunk most cordially . ' ^ NDREWS > '" P'y > m ° st cordially thanked the brethren , and heartily ongratulated them upon the signal success of the lodge . He had had strong and

heaity support and sympathy from the brethren during the past year , and if ( hat same cordiality existed among them , he had every confidence that it would become one of the best in South London . The toast of "The Permanent Officers—Deputy Preceptor , Treasurer , and Secretary "—was next proposed by Bro . ANDREWS , and was most cordially received .

Bro . C . PLANT , W . M . 101 , stated the pride he felt in being the Deputy Preceptor of such a lodge of instruction , and allowing him to take his share of the work in advancing its usefulness . His desire was to be long spared , and his conneclion unbroken for many years , and that the lodge would continue to go on in the same prosperous manner .

Bro . H . CORNFORD , Sec , thanked the brethren for their kind appreciation of his services , which , he assured them , was a labour of love , and his desire was that anything he could do to benefit the lodge , the brethren could depend upon him using his most strenuous efforts to gain that object . What he had done with respect to the supper , he did ungrudgingly , and he was most ably assisted by a willing band of Stewards , hence the thorough success .

Bro . ANDREWS proposed the toast of " Success to the Kindred Lodges of Instruction . " Bros . CASS , P . M ., for Blackheath Lodge ; ROWLANDS , P . M ., for Skelmersdale Lodge ; HOOPER , P . M ., for Alexandra Palace Lodge ; and NiuLE'rr , for Rose Lodge , very ably responded . The toast of "The Energetic Stewards" was proposed by Bro . ANDREWS , P . M ., and Bro . E . A . RICE , S . W . 1320 , very cordially replied , in appropriate terms .

"The Worthy Host , Bro . Weller , P . M ., " was next given in happy terms , and he was congratulated upon the excellent manner he had provided for the brethren , which had added greatly to the evening ' s enjoyment . In reply , Bro . WELLER stated the gratification he felt in giving satisfaction , which would always be his aim to every brother in the lodge . A very lengthy programme of music was carried out , under the direction cf Bro . Harper , P . M ., ably assisted by Bros . Jackson , Stunt , Thorp , Harrison , Plant , Rowlands , H . Cohen ( reciter ) , and the "Mandoline and Banjo Troupe , " which greatly added to the harmony of the evening .

After the minutes had been conlirmed , Bro . Arthur W . Smith was raised to the Third Degree , and the business concluded with the report of the Finance Committee , which was adopted . The customary banquet followed , and the names of the three visitors were coupled with the toast of their health . In the course of his response , Bro . Pattillo said : About the year 1 S 57 , my father's only brother , Captain Joseph B . Pattillo , then a young man of about 25 years of age ,

was given his first command , that of a new brigantine sailing from Liverpoal , Nova Scotia , to the West Indies , with a cargo of lumber and produce . Alter discharging he was obliged to wait , like many others , some time for a return cargo . His vessel had been lying in the harbour for several days , and a number of other ships were moored in the immediate vicinity , amongst them being one commanded by an old English captain . With this person my uncle had become very friendly , owing in great part to their having exchanged greetings as brother Masons . It happened during Captain Pattitlo ' s absence

on shore , that a severe squall sprang up suddenly ( as frequently occurs in these latitudes ) , and his vessel being without suilicient ballast , wis thrown over on her biam ends . Thi-, of course , attracted the notice of the old English captain , who , withjut IJSS ot time , gave from the masthead of his own ship a signal of distress , such as is only allowed to be used when there is imminent danger . There was an immediate response to the signal from nearly every vessel in the harbour . Both boats and men were at hand quickly . The old captain took command of the disabled craft , and when my

After the minutes had been conlirmed , Bro . Arthur W . Smith was raised to the Third Degree , and the business concluded with the report of the Finance Committee , which was adopted . The customary banquet followed , and the names of the three visitors were coupled with the toast of their health . In the course of his response , Bro . was given his first command , that of a new brigantine sailing from Liverpoal , Nova Scotia , to the West Indies , with a cargo of lumber and produce . Alter discharging he was obliged to wait , like many others , some time for a return cargo . His vessel had been lying in the harbour for several days , and a number of other ships were moored in the immediate vicinity , amongst them being one commanded by an old English captain . With this person my uncle had become very friendly , owing in great part to their having exchanged greetings as brother Masons . It happened during Captain Pattitlo ' s absence

on shore , that a severe squall sprang up suddenly ( as frequently occurs in these latitudes ) , and his vessel being without suilicient ballast , wis thrown over on her biam ends . Thi-, of course , attracted the notice of the old English captain , who , withjut IJSS ot time , gave from the masthead of his own ship a signal of distress , such as is only allowed to be used when there is imminent danger . There was an immediate response to the signal from nearly every vessel in the harbour . Both boats and men were at hand quickly . The old captain took command of the disabled craft , and when my
