The Pilgrim Lodge , No . 238 , as announced in our last , held " a Mourning Lodge" last evening ( Thursday ) , at the Great Hall of Freemasons' Tavern , in memory of the illustrious brother , the late Emperor William , Grand Protector of German Freemasons . The room was heavily
draped in festoons of black velvet , with white cords and fringe . In the centre of the room was a catafalque , with a bust of the late Emperor at the head , surrounded by flowers and lighted tapers . RELIC OF CAPT . COOK . —We learn from the Whitby Gasettethat Bro . G . Markham Tweddell , theStokesley author ,, has recently discovered that he had possessed for many years a relic of Capt . Cook , which he was not awaieof until then . It is an old mathematical book , purchased at some auction in the town . Bro . Tweddell happened to take up this old book , and the first thing which
met his eye to his surprise on opening the volume , was the well-known autograph of Capt . Cook , written on a flyleaf , with the date of 1771 , when the great circumnavigator had just returned from his first voyage round the world . The title of the book is "A Treatise of such mathematical instruments as are usually put into a portable case , containing the various uses in arithmeticgeometry ,
, trigonometry , architecture , surveying , gunnery , & c , with a short account of the authors who have treated on the proportional compasses and sector . To which is now added an appendix containing a description and use of the gunners callipers . The second edition , with many additions , by J . Robevtson , F . R . S . " It is stronelv bound in calf .
unlettered , and contains eight folding plates . The book vvas no doubt much studied by Cook , who , like most other really great men , vvas for the most part self-educated . Had not this relic of Cook accidently fallen into the hands of the local antiquary , it most probably vvould have perished .

RELIC OF CAPT . COOK . —We learn from the Whitby Gasettethat Bro . G . Markham Tweddell , theStokesley author ,, has recently discovered that he had possessed for many years a relic of Capt . Cook , which he was not awaieof until then . It is an old mathematical book , purchased at some auction in the town . Bro . Tweddell happened to take up this old book , and the first thing which
met his eye to his surprise on opening the volume , was the well-known autograph of Capt . Cook , written on a flyleaf , with the date of 1771 , when the great circumnavigator had just returned from his first voyage round the world . The title of the book is "A Treatise of such mathematical instruments as are usually put into a portable case , containing the various uses in arithmeticgeometry ,
, trigonometry , architecture , surveying , gunnery , & c , with a short account of the authors who have treated on the proportional compasses and sector . To which is now added an appendix containing a description and use of the gunners callipers . The second edition , with many additions , by J . Robevtson , F . R . S . " It is stronelv bound in calf .
unlettered , and contains eight folding plates . The book vvas no doubt much studied by Cook , who , like most other really great men , vvas for the most part self-educated . Had not this relic of Cook accidently fallen into the hands of the local antiquary , it most probably vvould have perished .
