Order Of The Secret Monitor.

Order of the Secret Monitor .

At the last meeting of the Bon Accord Lodge of Mark Master Masons , it transpired that Dr . Zacharie , one of the members , held a warrant from the G . S . R . of this Order in the United States for introducing the Order into the United Kingdom , and the matter having been discussed , the brethren present approved the desirability of its introduction , and requested Bros . Zacharie , Matier , and Lewis

Ihomas to take such steps as to them might seem proper for inaugurating in London a conclave of this Order to be called the Alfred Meadows Conclave , in memory of this distinguished brother and deceased member of this lodge . Accordingly , on 5 th May a meeting of the only known members of the Order in London , Bros . Zacharie , Matier , Shadwell H . Clerke , and Lewis Thomas , was

called at So , Brook-street , when the following members of the Bon Accord presented themselves as candidates for initiation : Bros . Belton , Lennox Browne , Francis , Perry Godfrey , Lemon , Ohren , Vincent , and Spratling . In the absence of Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Gierke , Bro . Matier officiated as S . R ., and the rest of the brethren were duly initiated into the secrets and mysteries of this interesting

and useful Degree . The officers of the conclave were afterwards appointed as follows : Bros . J . Zacharie , M . D ., Supreme Ruler ; C . F . Matier , 32 , 1 . P . S . R . ; Col . Shadwell Clerke , 33 , P . S . R . ; Lewis Thomas , 1 S , Councellor ; J . Perry Godfrey , Guide ; W . G . Lemon , 30 , LL . B ., Treas ., ; W . J . Spratling , 18 ° , B . Sc , Sec ., ; C Belton , 30 , Stwd ., The next meeting was fixed for May ipih , when several

other brethien of Bon Accord will be initiated , and a further meeting for a later date , when several candidates not members of this lodge have expressed a desire to become members of the Order . It is intended to call a full meeting of the members early in

June , and there and then to form a Grand Conclave of the Order , and take power to issue warrants for the formation of conclaves in any part of the United Kingdom . Any brother who is already a member of the Order , or who may desire information thereon , is desired to communicate with the Secretary , VV . J . Spratling , 74 , Wickham-road , London , 0 . 11 .

Royal Masonic Institution For Girls.

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS .

The annual visit of the Stewards to this Institution took place on Monday last , when Bro . Robert Grey , President of the Board of Benevolence , distributed the prizes awarded to the successful scholars , under the skilful and amiable rule and management of Miss Davis and her assistants . It was very gratifying to find in the first place

that the Institution has an entirely clear bill of health , and the plump , rosy , and cheerful looks of the children testified to the care that is taken of their bodies as well as of their minds . A stroll through the grounds showed several improvements in the property . The piece of ground acquired by the Committee , as a protective measure to prevent the possibility of the Institution being crowded in by the erection

of buildings on the adjoining land , has now been enclosed by the extension of the boundary walls , and the lower portion has been appropriated as the kitchen-garden , the part nearer to the buildings being laid out in walks and lawn . The transfer of the kitchen-garden has improved the recreation grounds , and the capital lawns that have been laid down on the old kitchen-garden are strongly suggestive

of lawn tennis , and opportunities to the friends of the Institution , who find delight in offering additional prizes , of instituting one or more prizes for skill in this fashionable game . Another striking improvement is the erection of two substantial cottages , one at the extreme front and the other at the extreme rear of the grounds , which , it is understood , are intended to be occupied the one by the gardener

and the other by the carpenter , thus affording male protection to a large household , consisting entirely of females . It maybe sufficient to say further that all parts of the buildings and grounds exhibit the same extreme cleanl ness and order which are always observable at the Girls' School . A large company assembled in the hall to hear a selection of music and recitations by the pupils , and the manner

in which the children acquitted themselves in these exhibitions appeared to give general satisfaction , which found vent in warm and frequent applause . The audience appeared ranch pleased with the precision with which groups of from 7 to 21 children executed Boccherini ' s , Gounod's , Raff ' s , Haydn ' s , Weber ' s , and Kuhe ' s music on seven pianos . The elocutionary efforts were also warmly

appreciated , and some of them were notably good . Two ot the recitations were exceptionally good . Hamilton Aide ' s pathetic little story , "Lost and Found , " was admirably rendered by Ellen Ashton , and in Will Carleton ' s recitation in two parts , " Betsy and I are out , " and " How Betsy and I made up , " Ada Crow exhibited an amount of natural talent which it is to be hoped she will continue to cultivate .

In the distribution of prizes given by the Institution the gold medal for proficiency ( with £ 5 added by Bro . Wm . Winn ) was awarded to Helen Senior , and the silver medal for good conduct ( with £ 5 added by Bro . W . Winn ) fell to Grace Bartrum . It is satisfactory to find that in the Cambridge Local Examinations the whole of the 20 children who were

entered passed with the exception of one—a most intelligent looking little girl—whom illness compelled to withdraw . Eight of the candidates passed with honours . In the College of Preceptors' Examinations also a great success was scored , thirty children were entered , and the whole of them passed , lt would be too long a task to go through the whole of the prizes , which may well be said to be too numerous to

mention , and it will be sufficient to say that W . Bro . Grey admirably discharged his office in presenting them ; being so intimately acquainted with the merits of the children , he was peculiarly able to say a few appropriate words to each child as he delivered her prize , kind little sentences which , no doubt , will be treasured by the children quite as much as the tangible prizes they had won . When the last prize had been awarded ,

The CHAIKMAN said , now that that portion of the entertainment was over , he would . explain that the accident of his being in . the chair was owing to the unavoidable absence of the Provincial Grand Master for Shropshire , who had kindly consented to take the Chairmanship at the Festival . Bro . Sir OfHey Wakeman came from a young province , and the Committee hoped and believed that that young province would bring as much into their coffers as the
