Analysis Of The Returns.
ANALYSIS OF THE RETURNS .
"All's well that ends well , " and if the 99 th Anniversary of the Girls ' School has not been so productive as its more immediate predecessor , it has produced more than was generally expected , and what , with the permanent income of the Institution , will probably suffice for the requirements of the coming year , leaving nothing to speak of in the way of margin to meet untoreseen expenses . For this result we must be thankful . It would not have been pleasant to find that , in order to meet the necessary outlay of
the School , an inroad must be made upon the invested moneys which it has taken so many years and such trouble to accumulate , and it is a relief to know that the occurrence of any such evil contingency is now almost absolutel y out of the question . Next year , no doubt , when the Centenary celebration takes place , we may hope to realise a result that will be permanently , as well as immediately beneficial , but for the moment we are content with the week's proceedings and , as our custom is , shall enter without further introductory comment on the task of analysing the Returns .
The total announced by Bro . Hedges was £ 11 , 764 8 s . 6 d „ the number of brethren who gave their services as Stewards being 277 , or two more than assisted at last year ' s anniversary . Both these facts are gratif ying . We were afraid the total would have been only about as much in excess of , £ 10 , 000 as it turns out to have been short of £ 12 , 000 , while as to the 277
Stewards , we never imagined that between the 2 nd April , when the Board numbered only 203 brethren , and the nth May , there would have been an influx of 74 new Stewards . We are glad to have been disappointed in both cases , nor should we have shown ouiselves seriously chagrined , had our disappointment been of a more pronounced character . We are out in our reckoning , but in the right direction .
As to the distribution of this amount and these Stewards between London and the Provinces , we find that London with 121 Stewards or four less than last year , returned £ 5 909 os . 6 d ., which , all things considered , may be pronounced satisfactory , while as to the Provinces , the 156 brethren representing these returned £ 5855 8 s ., the Stewards in 1886 being 150 in number , and the sum of their lists £ 7672 5 s . We must not , however , lose sight of the fact that the Chairman of Wednesday was more immediatel y
supported by a Province which was organised less than two years ago , while last year ' s Chairman was a veteran Mason and his Province of ancient organisation . Little matters like this must not be lost sight of , for it is just these little things which are of no account with the multitude , which go to make the difference between a success that is great and a success that is ordinary , or between one that is complete and one that is onl y partial . Taking
LONDON first , we remark that of the 121 brethren who acted on its behalf , the House Committee constituted a group of 13 , of whom two , however , Bros . Fenn and Letchworth , acted as well as representatives , the former of Lodge No . 8 ^ —and to very good purpose he seems to have played his part—and the latter of Chapter No . 2 . The lists of these 13 brethren , including what
they raised from the aforesaid lodge and chapter respectively , amounted in all to £ 569 6 s . A second group of 20 brethren acted as Unattached Stewards , and these together made up a total of £ 344 13 s . There thus remained as representatives of lodges and chapters onl y 88 Stewards , who acted lor 85 Craft lodges , 3 Royal Arch chapters , and a Mark lodge , and the aggregate of whose lists was £ 4995 is . 6 d . This does not materially
differ Irom last year , when the number of Metropolitan Masonic bodies represented was substantially about the same , and we remarked at the time that while on an average about one third of the London lodges sent Stewards , in the case of this Institution the proportion was onl y about one fourth . We cannot pretend to furnish a reason for this , but as the lower proportion has been observed for two consecutive years , we trust
steps will be taken in the future to distribute the London representatives among more of the lodges . As to the individual items , composing the London total , we are pleased to . find that the three-figuie lists are more numerous and more productive than they were last year . Indeed , two of them stand as Nos . 1 and 2 respectively of the lists of the whole Board of Stewards , the first—and easily the
firstbeing the list of Bro . G . Embhn , who represented the Lodge of Justice , No . 147 , and whose return amounted to £ 420 , while the second was that of Bro . Abel Simner , of the Domatic Lodge , No . 177 , who returned ^ 353 15 s . The onl y other list that exceeded £ 200—that ot Bro . Stothert , ot the Royal Sussex Lodge , No . 53 , Bath , who figures with £ 236 ios . —will be found among the Provincial Returns under the head ot Somersetshire , the third
London list—that of Bro . Herbert S . Glutton , of Lodges Nos . 406 and 1537 , amounting to £ 168 , and a most valuable contribution—being rather more than £ 185 below Bro . Simner ' s total , and ^ 252 below that of Bro . Emblin . The fourth hi ghest list was that of Bro . SiUs J . Humfress , of Lodge No . 733 , amounting to £ 161 14 s ., and then followed the joint list of Bros . Dopson and Purdue as Stewards of the
Ranelagh Lodge , No . 834 , for £ 150 , and that of Bro . T . Fenn as a member of the House Committee and Steward for Lodge No . 83 for £ 14 8 ' Bro . Josiah H . Roberts ol Lodge No . 700 , handed in £ 132 , and so ranked seventh in order . Bros . Flack and Meierhoff of the Old Concord , No . i 7 > raised together £ 120 , and Bro . Walter Martin , as Steward for No . 8 79 , contributed exactly the same amount . The remaining six three-figure lists are close together , Bro . E . Anderton of the Aldersgate Lodge No . i ° 57 >

E . Anderton of the Aldersgate Lodge No . i ° 57 >
