Sir Algernon Borthwick , ALP ., presided at the second annual meeting of the Kennington and Chelsea Branch of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children on Friday , the 6 th inst ., when a very encouraging report of the proceedings of the past year was read . The celebrated oyster-rooms and restaurant in Coventrystreet , Haymarket , known as " Scott's , " was almost totally

destroyed by fire early on Alonday , and unfortunately four waiters , who resided on the premises , lost their lives , their escape by the staircase being cut off by the llames . The other nine inmates had the good fortune to make their escape . The addition which is about to be made to St . Mary ' s Hospital , Paddington , will , by desire of the Prince and

Princess of Wales , be named the Clarence Memorial Wing . The work is estimated to cost £ 100 , 000 , and a festival in its aid will be held at the H 6 tel Metropole on Friday next , the 20 th inst ., under the presidency of the Duke of Cambridge . Her Alajesty has headed the subscription list with a donation of ^ 100 . The 47 th anniversary festival in aid of the German

Hospital , Dalston , was held at the Hotel Metropole on Wednesday evening under the presidency of the Duke of Cambridge . There was a numerous body of guests present , and the subscriptions , which included £ 200—given annually—from the German Emperor , £ 50 from the Queen , and £ 20 from the Chairman , amounted to £ ' 2 SC 2 r The musical arrangements were in charge of B-o . The seventh annual meeting of Soldiers' and Sailors ' Families Association was held in the Royal United Service Institution on Saturday afternoon last , under the presidency of tbe Duchess of Connaught . Her Royal Highness was accompanied by the Dukes of Edinburgh and Connaught ,

The Horticultural Exhibiton at Earl ' s Court was opened on Saturday afternoon last by the Duke of Connaught , and the weather being exceedingly fine and the band of the Grenadier Guards present under Bro . Lieut . Dan Godfrey , there was a large and fashionable attendance , including the Bishop of London and Airs . Temple , Bros . Lord Balfour of

On the same day and in an arena adjoining , Buffalo Bill and his Wild West re-opened their display of the Jubilee year . In the evening the garden and the show were brilliantl y illuminated .

It was visitors' night , and among those who had received and had accepted the invitation of the VV . M ., Bro . VV . B . Ferrier , were li'os . Sir Augustus Harri-, P . G . Treas ., and Edward Fletcher , lessee of the Theatre Royal and the Grand Theatre . Bro . Sir Augustus Harris receiveela warm greeting from a crowded muster of the brethren , when , in com .

SThe " Old ATasonians " gave their annual entertainment at Anderton ' s Hotel , which was in every respect successful . The programme was excellent , and the audience numerous and appreciative . We trust it has brought a considerable addition to the funds of the "Benevolent and Grant Fund , " which was the main object of the gathering . Bro . the Eart and Countess of Londesborough have returned to Grosvenor-square from visiting Mr . and Lady Sybil Codrington at Dodington Park , Gloucestershire .

Prince Henry of Battenberg presided at the 20 th annual festival held at the Hotel Aletropole , on Mondayevening , in aid of the Provident Surgical Appliance Society , the subscriptions and donations , including one of 25 guineas from the Chairman , amounting to £ 1077 .

We are much gratified to learn that our veteran Brother W . Kelly , P . P . G . M . Leicestershire and Rutland , is speedily recovering from his recent severe indisposition , and it is hoped that a projected visit to Eastbourne on the 1 st oi lune for a month will completely re-establish his health .

Bro . Viscount Powerscourt presided at the 79 th anniversary festival of the Artists' General Benevolent Institution , which was held at the Hotel Metropole on Saturday evening last . The Treasurer announced that the subscriptions amounted to £ 2363 .

The Duke of Edinburgh concluded his visit to the Oueen at Windsor on Sunday and returned to Clarence House . He left to resume his official duties at Devonport on Monday morning . The Duchess of Edinburgh is expected home early in June and Prince Alfred of Edinburgh in July .

to the handsome dining-room , in which several stalls had been arranged , and where the company had assembled to meet the Royal party . Princess Christian assisted in selling at the principal stand , upon which s nne interesting specimens of needlework , Japanese , Majolica , and other wares , and numerous fancy articles , were displayed .

The fifth annual festival of the Devonians in London was held at Freemasons' Tavern on Saturday evening last tinder the presidency of the Earl of Morley . Among the princi pal guests were Bros . Viscount Ebrington , ALP ., and General Sir Redvers Buller , V . C .,

Mr . and Mrs . Gladstone arrived on Wednesday afternoon at Carlton House Gardens , having driven from Dollis Hill In the evening they dined in Carlton House Gardens with Lady Frederick Cavendish . Mr . Gladstone will remain in town until to-morrow ( Saturday ) .

At the sale of the late Bro . Lord Cheylesmore ' s collection of pictures on Saturday last , Sir Edwin Landseer ' s '' Monarch of the Glen " realised 6900 guineas , and Clarkson Stanfied ' s " St . Michael ' s Mount—the morning after the storm , " 3000 guineas . The total proceeds reached £ 31 , 317 .

The memorial will be executed in marble , and placed , by permission of the Dean and Chapter , in the crypt of the Cathedral , close to that of the late Bro . Earl Mayo .
