The new W . M . afterwards initiated Mr . Henry Hill Smith , in excellent style , and concluded by giving the ancient charge perfectly . The W . M . appealed to the brethren to support his list for the Boys' School , and the brethren subsequently unanimously adopted a motion of Bro . RIasby

that 10 guineas be given from the lodge funds towards a testimonial to Bro . Rowland in recognition of his efficiency and energy as Secretary of the lodire . Bro . 'Rowland read the following letter from Bro . Forster Reynolds , the late Treasurer : " MembenugeVasse , Western Australia , March 17 th , 1 S 92 . To the Worshipful Master of the Richmond Lodge .- —Worshipful Sir , —I hope you will receive this on the 3 rd May . Although not with you in flesh shall be in

spirit , and will drink to the good health of you , sir , and all members of the Richmond Lodge . May it go on and prosper root and branch , and still uphold those truly Masonic ornaments which Bro . Aldin has so much at heart , viz ., benevolence and Charity . The watch the lodge so kindly presented to me has been much admired . I wore it away , and since leaving England when I make use of it the watch

reminds me of secrecy , the hour hand of fidelity , and the minute hand of obedience , three of the excellencies of a Masonic character . With my good wishes to you all , believe me , Worshipful Sir , to remain yours very truly and fraternally , FORSTER REYNOLDS , P . M . " Let ' s drink , laugh , and sing , Our wine has a spring ,

Here ' s a health to an Accepted Mason . Lodge was then closed , and the usual choice banquet followed . Bro . Skewes Cox , P . G . Stwd ., being called upon to reply for " The Grand Officers , Present and Past , " said he was g lad the W . M . had been in Grand Lodge , as he was able to convey to the brethren the impressiveness made on his mind by the working of the Grand Officers . Many of those

brethren were noblemen , who might have remained at home at ease , hut their love of the Craft made them put aside their own comfort . The affairs of Grand Lodge could not be in better hands than they were at present . He was sure the W . M . would do his best to develop the bump of benevolence in the hearts of the members of the Richmond Lodge ; they had only to be touched in the right way , and then his list would be a good one .

Bro . Albert Crew , I . P . M ., proposed "The VV . AI ., " whom the brethren had known many years . Bro . Aldin was the first initiate in the Richmond Lodge , and he was now installed in the chair . The brethren had seen his working that night , and they must all agree that they had the prospect of a grand year before them . The Worshipful Master , whose rising was the signal for loud applause , in reply , said that a little time back he never

thought he should be placed in the W . M . 's chair , but now that he was placed there he intended to do well . He could only repeat that so far as lay in his power the lodge should be represented and go on well , but he required the aid of the brethren for that purpose . The officers could not be surpassed in efficiency , and he was sure they would do all they could to assist him . If the brethren continued to da that in future years the lodge would be second to none . The

lodge had the men , and they only wanted stirring up . He was certain they would help him all they could . Although he should do his level best , the result remained very much with the brethren . Bro . H . H . Smith responded to the toast of "The Initiate . " Several brethren responded to the toast of " The Visitors . "

Bro . Crew , LP . M ., to whom an elegant Past Master ' s jewel was presented for his excellent presidency over the lodge for the past year , and who was much complimented by the W . M . in proposing the toast , replied , and assured the brethren of his deep interest in the lodge , which would be none the less now that he was enrolled in the ranks of the Past Masters .

The other toasts followed . Under the direction of Bro . G . H . Breadmore , the brethren were entertained with a cheerful selection of vocal and instrumental music by Bro . Herbert Schartau ' s part singers : Miss Gertrude Hudson , L . R . A . M ., Gold Medallist , Bro . Herbert Schartau , Mr . Sydney Beckley , Bro . C . T . Johnson , and Bio . Edward Dalzell . P . M .

Bro . C . P . MacCalla , P . G . M . of Pennsylvania , member of the Circle , and an annual visitor to the lodge , was greatly deplored by the brethren , and the Secretary was directed to communicate the sentiments of the members to the family of the late brother . Various matters of private business having been attended to , Bro . W . Fooks , LL . B ., read a paper entitled " Freemasonsin reference to the Laws of the Realm . " After reviewing the legislation of an early date

which only affected Freemasons as part and parcel of the general body of artisans and labourers , Bro . Fooksjdwelt at some length on the two statutes which were undoubtedly directed at them as Freemasons , and his observations lost none of their inherent interest from being interspersed with some fine passages of eloquence , a feature which was more marked still when he subsequently replied on the discussion .

Suggestions and criticism were offered by Bros . Dr . Richardson , VV . AL Williams , Speth , the VV . M ., and Maclntyre North , and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer , on the motion of Bras . Bywater and Levander . The brethren then adjourned to the Holborn Restaurant for refreshment .

At the request of Bro . E . T . Smith , J . W . ( as VV .. M . 17 OSJ , Bro . Benjamin was passed to the Second Degree . Some formal business having been transacted , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the adjoining room to dinner .

BishopSgate Lodge ( No . 239 6 ) . —The installation of Bro . Alderman Davies as the second Master of this lodge took place on Monday , the 2 nd instant , in the new Masonic room at the Great hastern Hotel . This excellent lodge was only consecrated last year , but has held some very successful meetings under the presidency of Bro . Geo . Noah Johnson , C . C ., P . M . I , P . G . S ., who was the first Master , and as such was presented at this meeting with a

handsome jewel from the members of the lodge . Among those present were Bros . C . F . Hogard , P . G . Std . Br . ; H . F . Tibbatts , S . VV . ; A . J . Hollmgton , P . M . sS , P . G . S ., J . G . S . ; H . M . Bates , P . G . S . ; Raddall , J . Laidlaw Cross , P . M . ; Tyler , P . M . ; Jackson , White , P . M . ; Knight , Marshall , Besivick , Meister , and others . 'The ceremony of installation was performed by Bro . G . N . Johnson in eloquent style , after which the ollicers were

appointed and invested for the ensuing year . At the banquet Bro . Hogard replied to the toast of " The Grand Officers , " and Bro . Tickle for "The Visitors . " In giving "The Health of the W . M ., " Bro . Johnson spoke of the admirable progress made by the lodge during its . short existence , so that it had become quite a local institution , and hoped that a large increase ot members would take place during his lordship ' s year of ollice . The

Alderman was in full sympathy with their desire to promote good fellowship and mutual friendship in the Ward , and he looked upon it as a happy omen that their civic chief had taken a leading part in their councils so early in the Ward ' s existence . 'The Worshipful Master , whose health was drunk with enthusiasm , said he had accepted office with full knowledge of its responsibilities . Hi : trusted that notwithstanding all

pressure of public duties he would be a working Master , and he would be glad to perform any work the brethren called upon him to perform . He had excellent ollicers , and he noticed that no less than live of them had passed through the experience of the chair . The good feeling and devotion to the Order which led a brother to descend from the position of P . M . to that of Steward could not be too highl y praised , ln following Bro . Johnson he had a difficult task

but would try to emulate his earnestness , and in the meanwhile would ask the brethren to drink to his honour , and to wish him a long career of usefulness . Bro . Johnson , in reply , referred to his experience in the chair , and the pleasure lie had experienced in welcoming so many additions to the Craft . The presence of two visitors reminded him of previous occasions—one about seven years

ago , when he was appointed I . P . AL at the consecration of the Alliance Lodge , No . 1 S 27 , oyer which Bro . Jackson is now W . M ., and also of an evening 19 or 20 years ago , when he left the chair of Grand Alaster ' s Lodge , No . 1 , represented that evening by Bro . Alderman Wilkin . I he growth of Masonry during that period had been marked , as was shown in the strength of our Charities . The vicissituJesof position were part of the healthy discipline of Masonry , and

experience gained in the chair was always of the hi ghest value among junior officers . The jewel presented him he should ever value as a mark of esteem from the neighbours among whom his life had been spent . In proposing "The Visitors , " the Worshipful Master said he was sure they came to spend a pleasant evening and not to criticise the juvenile efforts of the lodge .

In response , Bro . Iickle declared that when he saw so much red and purple among the officers he considered it a good sign for the lodge . He congratulated the W . M . on his public career having become in some eight years about—a Common Councilman , Sheriff , and Alderman . After the usual other toasts the meeting was brought to a

happy conclusion by a subscription to the list of the VV . M ., who is serving as Steward at the Girls' Festival , when nearly ^ . 30 was raised . An excellent selection of vocal music was supplied by Miss Masie Riversdale , Miss Hilda Reading , Miss Emily Foxcroft , Bro . John Bartlett , and Mr . M . Dwyer , under the direction of Bro . Haskins , Organist to the lodge . ?
