Analysis Of The Returns.

BEDFORDSHIRE , which , though it is one of Our smallest Provinces , with only seven lodges on its roll' , has been represented at the three Festivals of the year . - In February , one of these seven lodges contributed , per Bro . the Rev . V . P . Wyatt , £ 30 10 s , In May , its two oldest lodges together raised £ 153 us ., and on Wednesday , Bro . the Rev . R . C . Fillingham , W . M . of the Ampthill Lodge , No . 2490 , handed in a list of

Aj 2 ios ., the general result being that four of the lodges in the Province have amongst them raised £ 236 lis . for our three Institutions . In 1 S 99 , ( wo lodge representatives and two brethren Unattached compiled a total of £ 133 17 s . 6 d . for the Girls' School , and in 1 S 9 S , a total of £ 321 t 6 s . Gd . was raised , of which £ 33 12 s . fell to the lot of the Old People , and ^ 28 S 4 s . Gd . was subscribed to the ] 3 oys' Centenary . There has never been any question as'to the friendly disposition of

BERKSHIRE to our Central Charities . From the year of its formation as a separate Province till now , it has regularly contributed to their support and on some very special occasions has done so most generously . In 1 S 9 S , it raised in all £ i 6 gy 5 s ., of which £ 163 19 s . was for the Old People , £ g 6 I 2 S . for the Girls' School , and / 143 6 17 s . for the Boys' Centenary . Last year it returned £ 242 os . 6 d . for the

Old People , £ 431 9 s . gd . for the Girls' School , and as originally announced , C 55 S 18 s . 6 A . for the Boys' School , the total distributed among the three being / 1226 8 s . gd . This year it has raised £ 346 5 s . Gd . for the Old People , and £ 25 2 6 s . for the Girls' School , while on Wednesday , six of its 17 lodges and one of its chapters , represented by seven Stewards , compiled a total of £ 224 15 s . 6 d .,

among those who took part in the work being Bro . C . E . Keyser , P . G . D ., Treasurer of the Institution , who acted for the Lodge of Hope , No ., ij 74 , Newbury , and the Aldermaston Lodge , No . 2760 , of which he was the first W . M ., and whose lists amounted to £ 81 iSs . Thus the total subscribed at the three Festivals is / S 23 7 s .

Notwithstanding that Lord Addington , Prov . Grand Master of BUCKINGHAMSHIRE , occupied the chair at the Benevolent Festival in February , and was supported by his Province to the extent of £ i 4 g $ ios ., two of its 20 lodges took part in Tuesday's proceedings , and these representatives with the help of four brethren and a lady Unattached , compiled a useful total of £ 111 6 s ., and increasing

the year ' s subscription to £ 1606 iGs . Last year , it took part in all three Festivals , contributing £ 162 Ss . 6 d . to the Old People , £ 141 15 s . to the Girls ' School , and Ci 18 5 s . to this Institution , or together £ 422 8 s . Gd . In 18 9 S , its subscriptions amounted to £ 1323 9 s . Gd ., of which the Benevolent Institution obtained £ 145 19 s . ; the Girls' School £ 33 12 s . ; and the Boys' School , in honour of its Centenary , C 1143 iSs . 6 d . These are excellent figures and redound to the credit of a Province , which is only of moderate strength ,

CAMBRIDGESHIRE , with its seven lodges , is another of our small Provinces , which is , nevertheless , a consistent and liberal supporter of our three Charities . In February two of the three brethren ¦ wlno acted as Stewards compiled a total of £ 95 15 s ., of which i'So appeared on the list of Bro . F . H . Potts , of the Ethcldreda Lodge , No . 210 7 Newmarket , and the balance on that of Bro . W . J . Armitage , Isaac Newton

University Lodge , No . S 59 . In May there were two Stewards , of whom Bro . J . H . Moyes returned £ 90 , as the representative of the Province , and Bro . Armitage , No . 859 , a sum of £ 10 10 s . On Tuesday Bro . Major Oliver Papworth , Prov . G . Sec , did duty for the Province , and Bro . Armitage once again for No . 859 , the sum of their and Bro . Potts ' s lists being £ 63 , of which all but £ 21 was obtained by

Bro . Papworth . This places the contribution for this year at £ 259 5 s . Last year ' s total was C 222 12 s ., of which £ 100 16 s . was returned for the Benevolent Institution . In lSg 8 thc figures reached C ' 759 13 s . Gd ., of which all but the . C 10 ios . subscribed to the Benevolent Institution and the £ 42 to the Girls ' School , was raised for the Boys' Centenary . These are big returns from a Province which is ot such limited strength .

There are now 53 lodges on the roll of CHESHIRE , hut as it has an Educational and a Benevolent Charity of its own , which naturally have a prior claim on the support of its lodges and brethren , it is content with figurine' prominently on special occasions , and on a moderate scale on ordinary

occasions . On Tuesday one of its lodges contributed JL 15 15 s ., per Bro . J . F . May , and this being augmented by Bro . Cookson ' s list , as an Unattached Steward , and others , for £ 52 ios ., makes the amount raised for " Our Boys " £ GS 5 s . In February the sum subscribed for the Old People was L ' 73 ios ., while in May t' ^ Sj 2 s . was given by the representatives of 10 lodges to our Girls ; the Returns for the year being £ 422 17 s . In 1 S 99 tne sunl was tlS g , co . nposed of

b ' , to the Benevolent Institution ; C 94 ios . to the Girls School ; and £ 31 ios . to the Boys' School . In 1898 , however , it raised ' -2779 17 s ., of which all but i ' 21 " , 5 s . was subscribed in honour of the Boys' Centenary . Other big figures are ti-, 150 to the Boys' School in 1891 ; I 19 SS to the Benevolent jubilee in 1892 ; and l ' : uoo to "Our Boys" in 18 95 , when the Earl Egerton of Tatton presided as Chairman at this Festival .

Coit . wv . u . i ., with its roll of 31 lodges , has been entered at all three Festivals ; but in February and Hay its Returns were tio 10 s . each time . On this occasion it had a representative for the whole Province in the person of Bro . E . A . P . Broad , whose list reached £ 346 10 s ., while that of Bro . Sholto H . Hare , Unattached , made a total of ¦ t . 157 'or this Festival , and one of . C 37 S for the year . In 1 899 the total w . is on a

larger scale , and reached C 51 G 9 s ., of which I 23 S is . fell to the shaie of the Old IH pic , £ 231 to the Girls' School , and £ 47 5 s . to this Institution . In 1898 , inclusive ° ! t' 8 54 19 s . subscribed at the Boys' Centenary , the Returns amounted to £ 924 5 s . Previous big Returns were made at the Benevolent Jubilee , when they reached t ?; 6 15 s ,, and in 1895 , when £ 750 was subscribed to the Girls' School , the Chairman on both these occasions being the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Prov . Grand . Master Thus the year 1898 holds the record , and we think is likely to hold it for some t : "U' to come .

We welcome with pleasure the re-appearance among the represented " 'ovinces of CUMBERLAND AND WESTMORELAND , which has taken no part in any of these Festivals since the Boys' Centenary- in ' A when it was entered for contributions amounting to £ 222 is . There is no °° uht it would have shown to still greater advantage on that occasion had it not . -- .. w » . — ...... ¦¦ .. -- „ --- r ) - „ .. Vw ~ ..... ut * tmu 1 . tii ;(

° ' \ that in 1897 Lord H . Cavendish-Bentinck , ALP ., the G . Master of the "wince , presided as Chairman at the Boys' Festival , and the Province loyally WckcJ up his lordship by raising . £ 1260 . There are 22 lodges in the two counties , but they are not over-strong . On Tuesday four lodges took part in " Proceedings , two of them—Nos . 1073 and 2217—being represented b y Bro . •' '•Hunter , while the amount standing to the credit ot the Province as the iconic of their labours - is . £ 187 2 s - . Gd . I '' our of the 27 lodges in

Analysis Of The Returns.

DERBYSHIRE are included in the Returns , and there were three unattached brethren , of whom the Secretary of the Institution , Bro . J . M . McLeod , was one . The amount compiled by the eight Stewards reached the comfortable sum of ^ 33 8 5 s ., among the separate items being the £ 110 obtained by Bro . T . j " . Beck , and Bro . E . Partridge ' s ^ 101 ios . for No . 1085 . In February a

single Steward in the person of Bro . I . N . Woodiwiss did duty for the Province with a personal donation of ^ 10 ios . ; while in May half-a-dozen brethren , of whom four hailed from the Royal Sussex Lodge , No . 3 S 3 , WinsbiU , figured in the lists , and together obtained ^ 200 16 s ., the chief Return being that of Bro . A . R . Price , of No . 353 , for £ 111 6 s . Thus the total from Derbyshire during the present year is £$ 50 ns . In 18 99 the sum distributed between the two Schools was £ 642 3 s ., of which the Girls' School had the satisfaction of

securing £ 390 19 s . In 1898 the total reached ^ 27 84 ios . 6 d „ the Old People received £ 30 8 s . 6 d ., the Girls' School £ 335 , and the Boys' School , in honour of its Centenary , ^ 2419 2 s . In 1 S 96 , when his Grace the Dike of Devonshire , K . G ., who has been G . Master of the Province since 1858 , was Chair , man at the Festival of this Institution , Derbyshire contributed £ 1642 3 s . towards the result ; while in 18 92 , when the Benevolent Institution celebrated its Jubilee , is raised £ 1362 out of a total for the year of ^ 173 8 14 s .

The interest which DEVONSHIRE takes in our Central Institutions , notwithstanding it has an Educational and Annuity Funds , has grown with the increase in the number of its lodges , of which , including one consecrated this year , there are ' now 60 on its roll . In 189 S the year produced a total of . £ 1 9 61 45 . iod ., of which £ 18 75 2 s . iol was subscribed to the Boys' Centenary , tn 1 S 99 the returns were on a very modest

scale , and only amounted to £ 274 Us . ; but this year there has been a decided improvement , the amount subscribed to the Old People in February being ^ 246 15 s ., and to the Girls' School in May . £ 136 ios ., while on this occasion the Province as a whole per Bro . J . R . Wilson with Bro . F . B . Westlake and two others Unattached , together obtained . £ 136 ios ., the principal list being that of Bro . Wilson for . £ 115 ios , Thus the aggregate of the three amounts stand at £ 519 15 s . One oi the 15 lodges in

DORSETSHIRE took part in Tuesday's proceedings , and returned , per Bro . A . T . Manger , W . M . £ 32 os . 6 d . In February , thanks to the efforts of Bro . J . H . Whadcoat ' J . P ., the Province figured for £ 148 16 s . 6 d .. and in May Bro . Beach , as Steward '

for the whole body , raised £ 39 15 s ., the product of the year being £ 280 12 s . Last year Dorsetshire was represented at all three Festivals , Bro . Whadcoat being a Steward at each of them , and distributed amongst them . £ 336 us ., while in 1 S 9 8 the amount raised was . £ 2127 ios . 6 d ., of which . £ 2054 os . 6 d . fell to the share of the Boys' School on the occasion of its Centenary .

DURHAM , which has a muster-roll of 37 lodges , was Stewardless on Tuesday , but nevertheless is entered in the Returns for £ 105 , and as it contributed . £ 105 to the Old People in February and C 122 7 s . to the Girls' School in May , per Bro . C . T . Johnson , who represented the Province generally and also one of its lodges , the year ' s total is

£ 332 7 s . Last year it gave only . £ 157 10 s . to the Central Charities , 50 guineas to each of them , but for its own Educational and Hudson Benevolent Charities it held a special Festival of its own , which yielded the large sum of . £ 2500 . In 18 9 8 the total was £ 643 7 s ., of which £ 533 2 s . was subscribed to the Boys' Centenary .

This has been a most successful year with ESSEX , thanks more specially to the efforts made by two of its newest lodges , namely , that of the Seven Kings , No . 2749 , Romford , which took a leading part in the Benevolent and Girls' Festivals ; and the Charles Dickens Lodge , No . 2757 , Chigwell , which raised the biggest Hat for the former . In February 11 of ks 4

, s lodges , by the medium of 6 S Stewards , nine of whom were ladies Unattached , raised no less than £ 1381 is . 6 d . No . 2749 being entered for £ 346 ios ., and No . 2757 for £ . 105 ; while the Albert Lucking Lodge , No . 2717 , Southend-on-Sea , contributed , per Bro . F . England , . ( . ' 1525 s . In May the lodges together subscribed £ 191 , No . 2749 being again to the fore with a joint list , from 13 Stewards , of _ £ i 2 G . At this meeting eight lodges were representedeach by a single Steward

, , and with the aid of Pve Unattached brethren compiled a total of £ 470 8 * . 6 J ., the principal list being Bro . D . L . Gould ' s , No . 2005 , for L ' 105 , the year ' s aggre g ate amounting to £ 2042 ios . In 1 S 99 , the total was _ £ i 4 i 04 s . 6 d ., k which £ 450 3 ^ 6 A was subscribed to the Benevolent Institution , . 1 : 720 us . to the Girls' School , and £ 242 ios . to the Boys' School . In the year of the Boys' ( Jjntenary , it contributed

the large sum of / 4122 12 s . od . towards that memorable Festival , and , £ I 6 J J -J . 6 ) . to the other two Charities , making the total for the . vhole yen- l' . ( 2-5 > 16 s . ' Thus in the brief space of three years our Essex brethren have subicriajd upwards of £ 7500 to our three Central Masonic Institutions , and though as a matter ot course the Boys'School had the lion ' s shire , the claims of the other two Institutions have by no means been overlooked .

GLOUCESTERSHIRE occupies a foremost place among the Provinces of about the saiie strength , and though it musters only 17 lodges , is a generous and regular supporter of ' our Institutions . In 18 9 8 , it subscribed £ 47 5 s . to the Benevolent Institution £ 8 9 5 s . to the Girls' School , and £ 2723 12 s . to the Boys' Centenary , making in all 1 : 2860 2 s . for the year . In 18 99 , it rested , its contributions to the Benevolent Institution , amounting to £ 166 18 s . 6 d . ; to the Girls' School to £ 358 is . ; and to the Boys'School to £ 26 5 s . ; the aggregate of the three bsing I'ssi 4 * GJ During the present year it has given £ 57 15 s . to the Benevolent , and C { tg 15 s . ' to the Girls' institution , while on Tuesday the representative of one it ' s lod-.-s and Bros . R . V . Vassar-Smith , J . P ., D . P . G . M .. and Edwin Lea , J . P ., toother raised £ 115 ios ., giving a total for the year of £ 523 .

GUERNSEY AND ALDERNKY , since they have been-organised as a Province , under Bro . J . Balfour Cockburn as Prov . G . . Master , have been pretty regular in their attendance at these Festivals , and though the islands contain only six lodges , it makes a goodly show at times . ' In 18 9 8 , it distributed £ 240 93 . among the Charities , £ 151 4 , - . being < -ive , i at the

Boys Centenary , £ 78 15 s . to the Old People , and the small remainder a' . C 10 10 . to the Girls'School . Last year it figured at the Boys'Festival for L ' 27 while during the present year , after subscribing £ 21 to the Girls' School in May Bro J . B . Nickolls , Prov . G . Secretary , as Steward for the recently consecratnl Balfour Cockburn Lodge , No . 2 S 05 , and Bro . Major Carrell , Unattached , Inve together compiled a total of £ 31 ios ., making £ 52 ios . for the year .

Like many other of our large Provinces HAMPSHIRE AND THE ISI . E OK WIGHT , with its 48 ledges , makes a brave show on special occasions , but , havin » an Educat onal Fund of its own , it is coitent with more moderate contributions on otV . ers , Thu- - , in 18 9 8 , after subscrning C 31 15 s . to the Old People , and « ' ( 5 S 5 s

Bro . Papworth . This places the contribution for this year at £ 259 5 s . Last year ' s total was C 222 12 s ., of which £ 100 16 s . was returned for the Benevolent Institution .
