Analysis Of The Returns.

to the Girls' School , it raised , by the medium of 56 Stewards , the large sum ol £ 3 38 13 s - Gd . for the Boys' Centenary . Last year it also did well , contributing £ 432 7 s . to the Benevolent Institution , £ 377 to the Girls' School , and £ 174 12 s . to this Institution , the year's aggregate being £ 98 3 19 s . This year it has been somewhat more sparing in the bestowal of its favours , the Old People having

received no more than £ 113 3 s , 6 d ., and the Girls' School only £ 205 os . 6 d . in May . A better display was made on Tuesday , when nine lodges sent up Stewards and Comp . Le Feuvre represented Prov , Grand Chapter , while Bro . Grosutt was Unattached , the total announced as having been returned being £ 342 9 s ., so that the total for the year reaches £ 660 13 s .. We are glad the year has terminated thus satisfactorily .

For the first time since the Boys' Centenary , in 18 9 8 , the Province of HEREFORDSHIRE has figured in our Festival Returns for £ 15 15 s . We greet the re-appearance most cordially . •Again we are in a position to congratulate the Province of

HERTFORDSHIRE on the good work it has accomplished , and though [ the total for 1900 may not be such as we havehad the privilege of recordingin former years , it is , nevertheless , on a scale that is creditable to a Province which even now musters but 24 lodges . In 1898 the total of its contributions , made up of £ 343 2 s . to the Old People , £ 168 15 ? . 6 d . to the Girls' School , and £ 1614 5 s . 6 d . to the Boys' School in

respect of its Centenary , reached £ 2126 3 s . In 1899 there was again a goodly show of Returns , the Benevolent Institution being supported to the extent of £ 384 10 s . Gd . in February , the Girls' School with £ 179 os . 6 d . in May , and the Boys' School , at whose Festival Bro . C . E . Keyser , who is a Past G . W . of the Province , presided as Chairman , with £ 1101 ios ., the year's aggregate being £ 1665 is . As regards the present year , Hertfordshire began it well by raising

£ 566 14 s . for the Benevolent Institution , following this up in May with £ 295 4 s . 6 d . to the Girls' School . On Tuesday eight lodges and two chapters were entered in the Returfls , Bro . A . Woodham Nash , representing theStortfordand St . Michael ' s Ledges , Nos . 409 and 2136 respectively , both of Bishop Stortford , and Bro . C . E . Keyserthe Halsey Lodge and Chapter , No . 1479 , St - Albans . The eight

, Sttwaids from these , with Bro . F . Sumner Knyvett , P . G . D ., D . P . G . M ., and arofher Unattached , together raised £ 42725 ., the principal lists being Bro . Keyser ' s lor £ 113 2 s . Gd ., and Bio . Knyvett ' s for £ 73 ios . This raises the total for the year lo £ 1289 os . Gd ., and lorthe three years we have traversed £ 5080 4 s . 6 d . Though

KENT , with a roll of 65 lodges , is the strongest of our Southern Provinces , it would not be reasonable to expect from it a heavy Return . Earl Amherst , who has presided over it ? fortunes with such manifest advantage to the Craft , andso much honour to himself , for the last 40 years , has consented to preside at next year ' s Festival in behalf of the Girls' School , and his Province will naturally reserve its strength in

order to support his lordship worthily . In 1898 it raised during the year the large sum of £ 5671 16 s ., of which all but £ 129 12 s . 66 . was subscribed lor the Boys ' Centenary , while last year it gave £ Si 8 iSs . to the Old People , C 388 19 s . to the Girls' School , and £ 283 ios . to the Boys' School , making the total distributed among the three Charities in 1 S 99 £ 1491 7 s . The result for the present year is less imposing , the amount subscribed to the Old People in February being £ 284 is . Gd ., to the Girls' School in May £ 569 4 s ., and to the Boys' School on

Tuesday £ 442 ios . ; total for the year £ 1295 6 s . Gd . In obtaining Tuesdays Return there were in all iG Stewards , of whom one was a Lewis and two were ladies , Bros . J . S . Eastes , P . G . D ., D . P . G . M ., and J . W . Elvin , with Bro . Jesse Ellis , were Unattached , and the rest were the representatives of 10 lodges . We trust that next year may prove a record , and that it will be our privilege to report a higher total lor the Girls' School than has ever been obtained from this strong and generous Province . It is not surprising that

LANCASHIRE ( E . D . ) , though it musters 113 lodges , should have kept its efforts in aid of our Central Charities within moderate limits during the present year . Arrangements were proposed to be begun as far back as the installation last year of Lord Stanley , M . P . as Prov . G . Master , to hold a Festival in behalf of its Educational and Benevolent Institution . Owing , no doubt , to his lordship's absence in South

Africa , this Festival has not yet come off , but the intention has led our East Lancashire brethren to reserve their contributions for the event . Hence , in February , only a sum of £ 309 15 s . was raised for the Old People , and in May the still smaller sum of . £ 247 15 s . On this occasion one lodge sent up three Stewards and a Templar Preceptory one , and there were , in addition , three brethren Unattached . The toial obtained by the efforts of these seven .

including the List of Bro . Captain J . Barlow for ^ 294 , was £ 399 4 s . 6 d ., and placed the total for the year at £ 956 14 s . Cd . Last year the figures were on a still more modest scale , the Old People receiving . £ 252 , the Girls' School £ 205 , and this Institution £ 57 15 s ., the year ' s aggregate being / 514 15 s . In 189 8 the Province did splendidly , taking second place among the Provinces at the Boys' Centenary with £ 5772 7 s . 6 d ., the £ 215 5 s . subscribed to

the Old People and the , £ 93 14 s . to the Girls' School making the total for the three Charities , £ 6081 6 s . 6 d . It had previously done some excellent work , notably in 1 S 69 , when it raised ; £ . 38 N 5 for this Institution to help pay off the mortgage on its property at Wood Green ; in 1888 , whin it gave to the Old People . £ 28 73 us . 6 d ., and to the Girls' School £ 1350 16 s . 6 d . at its Centenary Festival ; in 1892 , when it supported the Benevolent Jubilee to the extent of £ 266 7 5 s . ; and in 1895 , when it raised over , £ jooo for its own Charity .

LANCASHIRE ( W . D . ) , with the still more numerous array of 122 lodges , was only represented by six brethren and two ladies Unattached , the sum total of their lists being £ 152 5 s . In February it subscribed £ 158 is . 6 d . to Die Old People , and in May , £ 274 6 s . Gd . to the Girls' School , so that the year ' s total is £ 584 13 s . In 18 99 the amount was ^ 407 9 s ., made up of ^ 152 5 s . to the Old People , £ 140 14 s . to

the Girls' School , and . £ 114 ios . to this Institution . In 18 9 8 it contributed / 4451 13 s . to the Boys' Centenary , and . £ 73 ios . to the other Institutions . Its best on record was in 1891 , when , in support of the late Earl of Lathom as Chairman at the Boys' Festival , it raised £ (> iz 6 14 s . 6 d . It must not , however , be forgotten , that West Lancashire has four Charities of its own to provide forthe Educational , the Hamer , the Alpass , and the Victoria , and that the provision it makes for them year by year is on a liberal scale . Only one of the 25 lodges in

LINCOLNSHIRE took part in Tuesday's Festival , the sum standing to its credit being , £ 42-It was among the absentees from the Benevolent Festival in February , and is entered for ; £ io ios . in the Girls' School Returns in May , so that the proceeds for the year stands at . £ 5 2 ios . Last year it raised . £ 399 7 s . for the Old People and £ 10 ios . for this Institution , or , together , . £ 409 17 s . ; while in 1 S 98 it subscribed / 1383 18 s . to the Boys' Centenary . In 1 S 9 6 , when the Ear ) of Yarborough , Prov . G . Master , took the chair at the Girls' Festival , Lincolnshire loyally backed up his lordship by subscribing , £ 1500 to the Charity .

Analysis Of The Returns.

Only four of the 42 lodges in MIDDLESEX were included in the Returns on Tuesday , the sum total of their lists being £ 211 IS . In February , the Benevolent Institution was the richer for its aid to the extent of £ 193 12 s ., while in May it came out very stronglv , contri . buting £ 1002 15 s . 6 d . to the Girls' School ; the total for the yea - being £ 1407 g 3

In 1899 , the total was £ 8 75 5 s ., of which £ 309 us . 6 d . was raised for the Benevolent Institution , £ 489 ios . for "Our Girls , " and £ 77 3 ? . 61 . for "Our Boys . " In 1898 , including £ 2895 16 s . raised for the Boys' Centenary , the total reached £ 3587 6 s . 6 d . But the record year is 1896 , when Lord George Hamilton P . G . M ., was in the chair at the Benevolent Institution , and his Province con . tributed £ 3705 15 s . 6 d ., while the sums given to the Schools placed the total at £ 3067 15 s . 6 d .

The main effort of MONMOUTHSHIRE was made in May when it raised the fine contribution of £ 500 for the Girls' School Festival . It has only 11 lodges and , therefore , as a rule , concentrates its attention upon one Institution , according to each in turn its support . Occasionally , how . ever , it does a little supplementary work , and on Tuesday an Unattached Steward

figured in the Returns for £ 10 ios . Last year the Benevolent Institution was the favoured Charity , and received donations amounting to £ 477 15 s . ; while in 18 98 thn Province subscribed £ 1088 8 s . to the Boys' Centenary , £ 525 of that amount being the sum paid for a Life Presentation in commemoration of the valued services rendered to the Province and the Craft generally by the late Bro . Captain Ifomfray , P . A . G . D . C , Deputy P . G . M .

NORFOLK , with lS lodges on its roll , raised . £ 8 iS Ss . for the Boys' Centenary in 18 98 , and £ 122 13 s . 6 d . for the Old People last year . This year it has subscribed £ 73 ios . to the Benevolent Institution ; . £ 246 Ss ., per Bros . Eversley and Hardyment , to the Girls' School , and £ 52 ios . to this Institution .

NORTH ANTS AND HUNTS under the rule of the Earl of Euston as Prov . G . Master , has acquitted itself famously . When in 1 S 89 , not long after his lordship ' s accession to the office , he presided as Chairman at the Old People ' s Anniversary , the Province supported him with a contribution of £ 914 ios . 6 d . In 18 92 it subscribed £ 255 8 s . to the Benevolent Jubilee , and the following year £ 1050 to the Girls' School in

honour of Lord Euston as the Festival Chairman . In 18 9 8 it raised altogethei £ 1784 2 s ., of which £ 1621 7 s . was in respect of the Boys' Centenary , while the balance was shared between the Benevolent and Girls' Institutions , the former receiving two-thirds , and the latter one-third . These , of course , are the chiel evidences of the activity of the Province , and its ready sup port of our Charities . But on ordinary occasions it is more frequently than not represented by two or

three , and sometimes half-a-dozen , Stewards , as in February , when it subscribed £ 42 to the Old People , and again in May when it figured for a contribution of £ 36 15 s . to " Our Girls . " On Tuesday it furnished a contingent of six Stewards , of whom Bio . A . CocketiVi represented the Province , and three other brethren as many oi its lodges , while Bro . Harry Manfield , G . Treas ., and Bro . G . Ellard were Unattached . The sum total of their lists was £ 200 , of which the principal item was Pro . G . Ellard ' s . £ 60 . The total for 1900 thus stands at £ 278 i « .

Four of the 20 lodges in NORTH WALES are included in Tuesday's Returns , and the brethren representing them , with Bros , C . K . Benson and E . Roberts , Unattached , compiled the useful total of £ 146 13 s . 6 d ., which , wi ( h the £ 178 ios . contributed to the Girls' School in May , gives £ 325 3 s . 6 d , for the year . In 18 99 the figures were lower than usual , the total being only

£ 154 16 s . 6 d ,, composed of £ 21 to the Old People , £ 55 is . 6 d . to the Girls' School , and £ 78 15 s . to the Boys' School , Bro . Benson being a Steward at each of the Festivals . This , however , is not very surprising . In 1898 the total amounted to £ 1394 , of which C 10 S 9 ios fell to the share of the Boys' School at its Centenary , and . £ 294 out of the balance to the Old People . After so formidable a total of contributions it was only to be expected that the efforts made in the year immediately following should be less productive of good .

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE was represented to the extent of £ 10 io < . at the Benevo'en t Festival , and not at all at that of the Girls' School in May . On Tuesday two of its 18 lodges were entered in the Returns and the brethren representing them compiled between them

the sum of , £ 71 6 s . In 1899 , the Province did good service at the Girls Festival by raising £ 199 ios . At the Boys' Centenary , in 1898 , its nine Stewards raised £ 777 , which is the record of Notts both for the year and for a Festival Return . It has been generally regular in its support , though its average per year has not been remarkable .

There are but 12 lodges in the Province of OXFORDSHIRE , but it would take more time than we have at our disposal to discover the Festival at which , during the last quarter of a century , it h is not been represented . I " February , six of its lodges together compiled the total of £ 178 ios . In May , the Stewards from two lodges and an Unattached brother raised amongst them £ 37 us . 6 d . ; and at this gathering on Tuesday , seven Stewards hailing

from six lodges , succeeded in obtaining for this Institution the useful sum ol £ 160 17 s . 6 d . In 18 99 . it raised £ 141 4 s , for the Old People ; £ 209 4 s . 6 d . lor the Girls' School ; and £ | G 6 6 s . for the Boys' School ; making in a ' £ 516 14 s . Gd . This we regard as a successful performance , seeing that , in 1 S 9 8 , the Earl of Jersey , Prov . Grand Master , occupied the chair at the Benevol ^' Festival and was aided by his Province to the extent of £ 505 12 s . 6 d ., while in May , it raised £ 73 14 s . for the Girls' School , and in June , £ 338 7 s . for the Bop Centenary ; total for the year £ 917 13 s . Gd .

Though SHROPSHIRE musters only 12 lodges all told . it has an excellent record , its contributions to 01 " Central Charities having been for the most part regular , and on special o-ci-a ° most generous . This year it has been content with subscribing £ 31 ios . to t" - Old People , and £ 36 15 s . to the Girls' School , while on Tuesday five Steward * .

whom three hailed from the Salopian Lodge , No . 262 , Shrewsbury , and Bw * Rowland G . Venables , the Deputy , and V . C . L . Crump , were Unattac ^ raised amongst them . £ 288 15 s ., the joint list of Bros . Newill and Baid ' for ^ 257 5 s . being the principal sum , and placing the year ' s aggreg ' at £ 357 . in . £ 1899 , the Province had no part in either of the School Festivals and subscribed only £ 36 15 s . to the Benevolent Institution , but in | S 9 ; after eivinsr £ 80 KS . to the Benevolent and £ 16 i « . to the Gif .

Institution ; it raited £ 1199 is . Gd . for the Boys' Centenary , the year ' s aggreS ^ being £ 1325 Ms . Gd . Its previous " bests " were £ 1020 and £ 770 15 s . to the Gir ' School , in 1 S 8 7 and 1 S 8 S icspectively . During the present year
