Masonic Notes .

A large meeting of brethren in the South-East of London was held on Friday last at the New Cross Public Hall , to consider a proposal to form a company with the object of erecting a Masonic Temple and Hall for the south-eastern district . Bro . J . G . Thomas

presided . It transpired that a freehold plot of ground had been purchased on Deptford Bridge for ^ 1600 , on which it is proposed to erect the building . The capital will probably be ^ 5000 in £ 1 shares , and alread y a great many have been taken up .

* * * We are pleased to learn that our remarks last week on the subject of the Charity Jewel being presented by Grand Lodge instead of being purchased by those

qualified to wear it have been favourabl y received in various quarters , and we trust the day is not far distant when Grand Lodge itself will gracefully concede the point we are urging .

It should be borne in mind that this Charity Jewel stands to other Masonic decorations in pretty much the same position as the Victoria Cross does to other naval and military decorations . The honour of

wearing it is granted only to those who have rendered distinguished personal service in aid of our Charitable Institutions , a part of that service including the contribution of certain moneys out of their own pockets to

Masonic Notes.

the funds of the two or more Charities for which they have laboured . Clearly , therefore , the jewel will possess a greater moral value in the eyes of the

wearer , if it is presented to him publicly , in open Grand Lodge , than it can possibly possess now , when , having secured the much coveted honour , he finds he must pay a further sum of £ 2 in order to wear the distinction . : ' * * It should also be borne in mind that there are many brethren who g ive freely and even generously to our Institutions , who , however , are not so well circumstanced that they can afford to regard the expenditure

of an additional two or three pounds as of no moment ; and it appears to us that Grand Lodge , instead of imposing a tax on these worthy members , should do everything in its power to encourage them to win distinction in this particular field of Masonic labour .

* * * A well-designed and well-executed bronze jewel would answer the purpose , and would have the further advantage of being still more conspicuous than it is now . The contrast between the dark bronze and the

glittering gold and silver decorations among which it is so often nestled would be so marked that brethren would detect it at once , and would know at once that he who wore it was in the habit of practising , as well as professing , one , at all events , of the fundamental

princip les of our Society . There are certain decorations , as there are certain types of beauty , among women , which need no extraneous aid to render them imposing . They are beautiful in their simplicity , and because of it , and among these , is our Charity Jewel . * * *

An unfortunate accident has happened , we regret to say , to Bro . Gerard Ford , Deputy Prov . G . Master of Sussex . He has been staying at Berne with Mrs . Ford , and when both were walking in the Spitalgasse a violent thunder shower came on . The people rushed

for the shelter of the Colonade , and Bro . Ford was pushed against , and slipped on the pavement breaking his arm just below the shoulder . Bro . Ford was only just recovering from a recent illness , and the shock to his system is serious . It is hoped , however , that he

will soon be able to start on his journey home . Bro . Ford's installation as Prov . Grand Master of Mark Masons of Sussex , in succession to Lord Arthur Hill , has been fixed for the 27 th inst ., and we trust Bro . Ford will be sufficiently recovered by that time to be

present . * * * Bro . Matier , the Mark Grand Secretary , has , with commendable promptitude , just issued what mig ht be appropriately termed the Grand Mark Annual .

Excellent reports are therein given of the Moveable Grand Lodge held at Cheltenham , on the 10 th July , 1888 , presided over by the Marquess of Hertford , D . G . M ., as G . M . ; of the Grand Lodge on 4 th December , 1888 , when Lord Egerton of Tatton , Pro G . M .,

presided ; and of the regular Communication of 4 th June , 1889 , with the Marquess of Hertford in the chair . The special Grand Lodge , 25 th February , 1 S 8 9 , Lord Egerton again presiding , is also duly reported , and is remarkable for being the last that the lamented Canon

Portal , M . A . ( Past Grand M . Master ) , attended , whose devotion to Mark Masonry ceased only with his life-The other Special Grand Lodge , held quite recently ( 24 th July last ) , was convened for the investiture of

the new Mark Grand Secretary , the R . W . Bro . C . F . Matier , P . G . W ., by the Pro Grand Master , the Right Hon . Lord Egerton of Tatton , when one of the largest gatherings of Mark Masons testified to the popularity of the appointment .

* * * Then follow full particulars , financial , statistical , and general , of the Mark Grand Lodge , Provincial and District Grand Lodges , and the hundreds of subordinate

lodges , including the new ones granted to July , 1889 , Also the roll of honour of Chairmen at the various Mark Festivals from 186 9 to 188 9 , in which list over £ 2000 may be noted twice . The proceedings are bcth interestinp- and valuable .

The ardent young Mason who desires to perfect himself in theritual no less than the veteran whose knowledge is in danger of getting a little rusty , will hail with pleasure the announcement , which appears in our advertisement columns , of the re-assembling of the

Emulation Lodge of Improvement , at Freemasons ' Hall , on the 4 th October next . There is little fear that the existence of this '' Hig h School " of Masonry will be overlooked ; but the custom recently adopted of having a summer vacation breaks the continuity . Hence our reminder .
