A Veteran Provincial Grand Master
A VETERAN PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER
The proceedings at the annual meeting on the 30 th instant of the Prov . Grand Lodge of Warwickshire will be watched with a keener and more pleasurable interest than usual . The Province , as a reference to our Grand Lodge Calendar will show ,
has been in charge of the Right Hon . the Lord LEIGH for upwards of 47 years , his lordship having been appointed to oflice on the ist August , 1852 , on the resignation of the late Earl HOWE , who subsequently ruled the Province of Leicestershire and
Rutland . Moreover , Lord LEIGH has lately been celebrating his golden wedding , and it is proposed to present his lordship at the approaching annual gathering of Warwickshire Masons with an address indicative of the high esteem and respect in which he
is held by his brethren of the Province , while , when Prov . Grand Lodge has been closed , a deputation will wait upon Lady LEIGH and present her with a portrait of her husband , which has been
subscribed for by the Masons of his lordship ' s Province . Such an event as this , which in all likelihood is unprecedented in the annals of our Masonic Provinces , is in
every way worthy of commemoration , showing , as it does , that the relations existing now , and throughout the whole of his long career as Prov . G . Master , between Lord LEIGH and the lodges and brethren over which he has so worthily presided have
been of the closest and most intimate character , and that not only has h *? discharged the duties of his office with ability , kindness , and consideration , but also that , in discharging them , he has succeeded in winning and retaining the affection of all
the members of the Craft under his control . The value of his services to Freemasonry in Warwickshire may be judged from the fact that of the 32 lodges on the roll only 11 were in existence at the date of his appointment , the rema . ning 21 havingbeen
constituted under his auspices as Prov . G . Master , lhe earliest of these—the Stoneleigh , No . 725 , Coventry—dates from the year 18 57 , ' followed at intervals more or less close by the Temperance Lodge , No . 739 , Birmingham , of 1858 , and the
warden Lodge , No . 794 , Sutton Coldfield , of 1859 . In 1861 was warranted thc Leigh Lodge—named after his lordship—No . 88 7 , Birmingham , and then follow quitea number of lodges located
m the hardware capital , namely , the Bedford , No . 925 , and the Grosvenor , No . 938 , belonging to 1862 ; the Elkington , No . 1016 , and the Fletcher , No . 1031 , of 1864 ; and the Emulation , No .

116 3 , and the Forward Lodge , No . 1180 , of 186 7 . In 1868 was founded the Holte , No . 1246 , Aston , and in 18 70 , the Athelstan , No . 1333 , Atherstone , the former of these being the last in Warwickshire that was warranted in the
Grand Mastership of the late Earl of ZETLAND , and the latter the first in the county which comes within the Grand Mastership of the Marquis of RlPON . The St . Al phege , No . 1431 , bolihull , and the Israel , No . 1474 , Birmingham , were
warranted in 18 73 , and then we pass on to the Grand Mastership of H . R . H . the Prince of WALES , which so far has witnessed the constitution of six lodges , of which three meet in Birmingham , one at Coventry , one at Coleshill , and one at
Stratford-on-Avon , the earliest on the roll of Grand Lodge being the Lodge of Charity , No . 1551 , and the most recent the Loyal Travellers Lodge , No . 2733 , both meeting in Birmingham . This is not so marked an increase as has taken place in manv other
Provinces , but all the principal towns in the Province appear to be well and adequately furnished with lodges , and , after all whether Warwickshire has increased as much as or less than other Provinces is beside the question . Masonry under the rule
of Lord LEIGH has become thrice as strong as it was when he entered upon the duties of his office , while in all other respects the progress it has made has been very considerable . In Royal Arch Masonry , in whicli Lord LEIGH was appointed G .
Superintendent in 1864 , and also served as Grand Third Principal of Supreme Grand Chapter from 1885 to 18 92 , the number of chapters have somewhat more than doubled , while in the matter of our Central Masonic Institutions the Province , especially of late
years , has done yeoman service , Lord LEIGH himself having not only presided at some of their Festivals , but having been Honorary * Treasurer of the Board of Stewards at each of our School Centenaries . Such services , extending over so protracted a
term of years , have endeared his lordship to the brethren throughout Warwickshire , and it is not to be wondered at that the latter should have gladly availed themselves of the recent
jubilee of his marriage to do him further and still greater honour . May the relations which have existed between his lordship and his Province be continued for many years , to the pleasure and advantage of both !
The Province Of Durham.
THE PROVINCE OF DURHAM .
The recent annual meetings of the Provincial Grand Chapter and Provincial Grand Lodge of Durham passed off most successfully , and the brethren are to be congratulated on the results of the past year ' s labours . TheProvince , itistrue , hasnotadvanced ,
as many others have done , "by leaps and bounds , " but its progress , nevertheless , has been both steady and substantial . Thrice within the last quarter of century has it changed its rulers , the late Marquis of LONDONDERRY having been appointed Prov . Grand Master in 188 j in succession to
the late Bro . JOHN FAWCETT , whose appointment to office was made as far back as 1847 ; while in 1885 , on the death of Lord LONDONDERRY , the present chief—Bro . Sir HEDWORTH WILLIAMSON , Bart . —whose family appear to ta . ' : e

Since then nearly 15 years have elapsed , and during that period there has been , as we have said , steady yet substantial progress , of which the Prov . G . Master has every reason to be proud .
