had _ been achieved that evening in the installation ceremony . The I . P . M ., too , had during the past year carried out the noblest of all duties—that of true benevolence —for although lying on a sick bed , he sent up to the Girls' Institution the handsome sum of £ 102 , which reflected the highest ciedit . He would say that for level-headedr . ess , common sense , and kind heartedness , Bro . Jeffery had held his own ; and on behalf of the lodge he had great pleasure in asking his acceptance of the Past Master ' s jewel as a token of their esteem , with the earnest hope that he would wear
it for many years among them in the Rose Lodge . In reply Bro . Wal . Jeffery , I . P . M ., said the W . M . He most heartily thanked the brethren for the handsome jewel , which he certainly had tried hard for , although at one time he almost despaired of ever

With respect to the duties of the lodge , the officers were of such proficiency that the services of the Past Masters would not be required . He most heartily thanked the brethren for their cordial greeting .
The W . M . remarked there was one other Past Master in the lodge , a founder , and the first Master , Bro . David Rose , who was most highly honoured and none more dear to him , but at his own request he did not wish to reply . The toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary" was next giveiv-by the W . of Antwerp ; two books in Arabic on Freemasonry , presented on behalf of the writer , his father , by Bro . Saleem Makarius , of Cairo ; two coloured prints , " Keep within Compass , " published by Carrington Bowles , St . Paul's Churchyard , in 1785 , presented by Bro . G . VV . Pavitt ; and the W . M . expressed the thanks of the lodge to the brethren named for their generous and highly interesting gifts . Bro . E . Macbean , P . M ., then gave a feeling address in memorvof Bro . William Simpson , the celebrated artist and
traveller , a P . M . of the lodge , who was called to the Grand Lodge above on the 17 th August last . Bro . C . Purdon Clarke , W . M ., read a highly interesting , instructive , and suggestive paper , entitled " Vestigia Quatuor Coronatorum , " ranging from the Roman Collegia to modern Persia and India , on which a few comments were offered by Bros . G . W . Speth and J . R . Bell , after which a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the W . M . by acclamation , and the lodge was closed after a most interesting evening . The brethren subsequently dined at the Holborn Restaurant .
Harlesden Lodge , No . 2098 . AN INTERESTING MASONIC CEREMONY . On Monday , the gth instant , a most unusual , if not unique , event occurred at the above lodge . Mr . Commissioner Last , F . R . G . S ., a member of the Government of Zanzibar , on a visit to this country , was desirous of becoming a Mason before leaving England to resume his duties early on the 9 th instant , when it was imperative for him to return . Having been initiated on Monday , August 14 th , and passed on the 1 ith ult ., an application was made to Grand Lodge for a dispensation to raise him at the installation
meeting on the 2 nd instant . This , however , could not be granted , 28 days being the shortest time allowed between the ceremonies . Being very anxious that Bro . Last should be a full Mason before leaving , the brethren eventually hit upon the expedient of holding a lodge of emergency at the earliest time on the 28 th day , viz ., Monday , the 9 th inst ., at 12 . 5 a . m ., i . e ., ju % t after midnight .
The lodge was accordingly summoned by the W . M ., and at the time mentioned the brethren , to the number of 25 , assembled ^ and Bro . Last was raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason , the ceremony being impressively rendered by the I . P . M ., Bro . S . Yardley Tilley . He was assisted by Bros . J . Trade Fripp , W . M . elect 1087 , S . W . ; W . H . Thomas , J . W . ; Reed . P . M ., acting S . D . ; S . Hussey , P . M ., Prov . G . Stwd . Middx , J . D . ; and Dr . Crone , I . G .
There were also present Bros . Cecil Hunter , J . F . Woodroffe , C . K . Rawes , Stanley Ball , S . Riordan , and Thomas Parker , members of the lodge j and the following visitors : Bros . VV . R . Knapp , G . Harvey , W . H . Handover , R . H . Shaw , J . Adams , C . Pinkham , J . Lawrence , E . F . Brooker , J . Stait , P . M ., P . Z ., P . G . Stwd . Bucks ; A . G . Lee , A . Stait , and A . C . Gardner . Bro . Last is hoping , in conjunction with some Masons now living in East Africa , to found a lodge where at present none exists .
It would be interesting to know if any brethren have experience of a lodge meeting being held at the midnight hour .
St . Pancras Lodge , No . 2271 . There was a good attendance of brethren at the installation meeting of this lodge , held at the Midland Grand Hotel , St . Pancras , on Thursday , the sth instant . Bro . Thos . Paiker , W . M ., after a very successful year , vacated the chair in favour of Bro . Geo . F . Vine , who was initiated in the lodge a few years ago by Bro . Longman , P . When lodge was opened there was a heavy programme of work for [ transaction . Bro . G . W . Catling was raised to the Third Degree by Bro . Parker , W . M ., who then
vacated the chair for Bro . W . A . Scurrah , P . G . S . B . Bro . G . F . Vine was presented as W . M . elect , and was duly installed into the chair , afterwards investing the following officers : Bros . Matthews , S . W . ; Higgins , J . W . j W . A . Scurrah , P . M ., P . G . S . B ., Sec . ; Woodrow , P . M ., S . D . j Mitchell , J . D . j Cooke , I . G . ; Applebee , D . of C . ; Catling , Stwd . ; and Whiting , Tyler . Bro . H . R . Graham , M . P ., P . M ., Treas ., was unable to be present . Mr . W . A . Jennings was next impressively initiated into Freemasonry by the newly-installed W . M . A handsome Past Master ' s jewel was presented to Bro . Parker , I . P . M ., in recognition of his efficient services as W . M . during the past year . The jewel was manufactured by Bros . George Kenning & Son .
A satisfactory audit report was adopted , and several letters of regret from distinguished brethren were announced , after which the lodge was closed . A well-served banquet was enjoyed , after which the usual toasts received hearty recognition at the hands of the VV . M ., who set a commendable example in the brevity of his remarks . Bro . W . A . Scurrah , P . G . S . B ., replied for "The Grand Officers . " He said they could not possibly have a better Pro Grand Master than Earl Amherst , who had been
interested in Masonry ever since his initiation 35 years ago , and who carried out all his duties in a most able manner . Those brethren who attended regularly at Grand Lodge were pleased when the Earl of Warwick was appointed D . G . M ., for he had performed the duties of Prov . G . M . of Essex for many years to the satisfaction of all the brethren . The Grand Officers had been selected because of their hard work in Freemasonry , and , secondly , because of their knowledge of Freemasonry in every shape and form . As long as he was a Past Grand Officer he would endeavour to the best of his ability to
perform the duties devolving upon him , and in no case would he allow anything to be done which , in his estimation , was wrong or improper . He was delighted to find himself a Grand Officer , for he felt it was as much an honour to the lodge as to the individual . As a member of the Iodge he was charmed with the progress made , for every member introduced was a thorough and genuine brother . Bro . T . Parker . I . P . M .. then proposed "The Worshipful Master . " and said he
was pleased and proud to say he had watched Bro . Vine ' s career since his initiation , and had found him one of the most ardent Masons he knew . He recollected that very soon after his initiation Bro . Vine came to him and said he could work the ceremony of the First Degree , and then the Second and Third . This was the result of regular attendance at a lodge of instruction in Camden Town . Bro . Vine was now , to their very great delight , the W . M . of the lodge , and he prophesied for him a very happy vear of office , for he was sure that everything had been done to make it so .
Bro . G . F . Vine , VV . M ., thanked the brethren for their enthusiastic reception of the toast . It was true he had attended the lodge of instruction , for he found in the beautiful language of the ritual much to be admired . He thereupon desired from his initiation to know more about it . He would do his best in this lodge to act for its dignity whilst he occupied the chair , and do his best for its advancement and for the happiness of the brethren . Bro . W . A . Jennings replied for " The Initiate , " After which the W . M ., in felicitous terms , proposed "The Installing Master , " and remarked that Bro . Scurrah was ever ready to step into the breach whenever his services were reauired .
Bro . VV . A . Scurrah , P . G . S . B ., expressed his pleasure at being allowed to install Bro . Vine , although he feared a throat attack would have prevented him . He sincerely hoped the VV . M . would have health and strength to perform his duties as became the Master of so important a lod ^ e . He was sure that in the future , as in the past , the St . Pancras Lodge would be one of the best and most distinguished . Hrn . T . Parker . P . M .. resoonded for " The I . P . M . and Past Masters . " and was
followed by Bros . Longman , P . M ., Chattey , P . M ., and J . Irvine , P . M . "The Visitors" was acknowledged by Bros . H . W . Parker , W . M . 1402 , P . D . S . G . W . Hong Kong ; Nicholas , Lea , Moggridge , and Grice . Bros . Matthews , S . W ., and Higgins , J . W ., answered for " The Officers , " and the Tyler ' s toast concluded the programme . , „ ... Bro . J . Jefferson , Org ., had provided several excellent musical items , and was assisted by Bro . Will Edwards and Messrs . R . C Dutton and W . Hyde .

of Antwerp ; two books in Arabic on Freemasonry , presented on behalf of the writer , his father , by Bro .
M ., and has since filled various minor offices with success . The members present included Bros . Thos . Parker , W . M . ; G . F . Vine , S . W ., W . M . elect ; W . A . Scurrah ,

Hyde .
