of the kind svhen some Secretaries take no notice of circulars and neglect to make the returns . I hope lhat all svill see that the calendar supplies a want , and that the response next year svill be prompt . There are two points that in my experience have caused more dissension than all others put together , tbat the Book of Constitutions does not provide for , viz .:

—ist . If a P . M . ceases for upsvards of one year to be a subscribing member and afterwards rejoins , what is his legal position in the lodge ? 2 nd A member of lodge ( a ) joins lodge ( 5 ) and in it passes the chair , svhat then is his position in ( a ) ? Will you

Comp . Nesvton isfavourably knosvn already as an historian of lodges , and this last chronicle of his , in svhich he describes the constitution and progress till nosv of the Chapter of Concord svill materially enhance his reputation as a svorthy collaborator of Bro . Hughan and our other studious brethren . Bro . Hughan , indeed , has paid Comp . Nesvton the very great compliment of svriting a brief

introductory address to this history , in which he points out the claims of Concord Chapter on our respect , partly osving to its antiquity and partly to the steady svork it has achieved since it received its svarrant in 1785 , and the care it has bestosved upon its archives . The chapter , though svarranted in 17 S 5 , may be said to have commenced svorking in December 17 OS , so that , as Bro . Hughan remarks , it is

" not only one of the oldest known , but antedates all the other English chapters on the present roll . " The circumstances of this earlier period occupy the first chapter , and have been obtained from the records of the Anchor and Hope Lodge , No . 37 , to svhich the chapter is attached . What hosvever may be called the regular history begins svith an entry of the 5 th October , 17 S 5 , svhen a " General

Encampment of Royal Arch Superexcellent Masons" svas held , and sundry Royal Arch brethren " svere properly instructed and afterwards initiated into the higher Degree of Masonry . " On the 21 st of the same month certain brethren svere appointed to ofiice , and it was resolved to petition for a Royal Arch Chapter , to be knosvn as the " Love and Concord" to meet at Bro . A . Martin ' s , and

, the follosving day the p rayer svas drasvn out , signed and sealed , and despatched to the P . G . M . On the 19 th March , 17 S 6 , other brethren svere installed , and on the 31 st March the chapter svas inaugurated . For the few follosving years it continued its labours , but in 1790 thezeal of the members appears to have relaxed , svhile their number had diminished , and on ioth November , 1 7 01 , the svarrant and other

archives of the chapter svere carefully sealed up and delivered to the lodge , nor does there seem to be a record of any further meeting till 30 th January , i ^ oi . wlsen , without " preliminary observations or explanations , " a minute appears of a general encampment having been held in due form .
