, having svritten to say he svas afraid he should not be present , the W . M . said he should have much pleasure in investing that brother svith his collar of office on the first occasion on svhich he svas able to be present . Bro . Edsvards having completed the ceremony of installation , Bro . W . M . Stiles , P . M ., proposed that the best thanks of the lodge be voted to the Installing Master , and that the same be recorded on the minutes , for the able manner in

svhich he had performed the ceremony of installation that day . Bro . Scales , P . M ., seconded the proposition , svhirh was carried svith acclamation , and the W . M ., in formally conveying to Bro . Edsvards the thanks of the lodge , said he had additional pleasure in supplementing the vote by the presentation of a Past Master ' s jewel , svhich had been previously voted by the members . He added , that the Past Master ' s jesvel of the lodge had never been given to a more

svorthy brother , or to one svho had striven harder to earn it . Bro . Edwards thanked the brethren for the very kind feeling they had evinced tosvards him in presenting the Past Master ' s jesvel he had just received , and also for the hearty support they had rendered him during his term of office . A vote of condolence svith one of the members of the lodge on the death of his svife , and one of congratulation svith Bro . Carter , on his restoration to health ° after a most severe accident , having been passed , the Worshipful aster

M proposed that , in consideration of the great services rendered to the lodge by Bro . J . J . Michael , one of the earliest Masters , he be elected an honorary member of the lodge . The proposition was seconded by the I . P . M ., and carried unanimously . Lodge svas then closed , and the brethren adjourned to banquet . In due course the usual toasts svere honoured , that of " The Queen and Craft" being follosved by " The Health of the Prince of Wales , Most Worshipful Grand Master . "

" The Pro Grand Master , the Deputy Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers " were next honoured , the Worshipful Master remarking that brethren who had the privilege of taking a part in the proceedings at Grand Lodge svere svell acquainted svith the ability displayed by the rulers of the Craft in the conduct of its affairs . The Immediate Past Master having assumed the gavel , pointed out it svas quite unnecessary for him to

say any thing to recommend the toast he had to propose—" ' The Health of the Worshipful Master of the Metropolitan Lodge . ' There svere , hosvever , a fesv matters to svhich he desired to refer . Bro . Lovegrove svas initiated in the lodge , and had svorked his svay through the different offices until nosv lie svas Worshipful Master . The brethren svould all , he was sure , do svhat they could to make their Master's term of office one of success for the lod . The Worshipful

ge Master had seen a great amount of service ; but in presiding over his mother lodge his past honours svould be forgotten in the gratification of the moment . Doubtless his experience , acquired elsesvhere , would be of service to him in ruling his mother lodge . Bro . Lovegrove , in reply , tendered his thanks , and hoped he might be able to manage the lodge as the brethren desired it should be governed . Bro . Edsvards had told them

he ( Bro . Lovegrove ) had had some experience in the chair of Freemasonry . True , the present svas the tenth occasion on which he had presided over a body of Freemasons , but he felt the responsibility of his position . He should svork to the best of his ability for the svelfare of the lodge , and its members , and outside he should devote himself to the advancement of its interests . He hoped that svhen he retired from office the brethren svould be able to say he had

succeeded in his desires . Bro . Lovegrove then proposed " The Health of the Installing Master , Bro . G . Edssards , I . P . M . " It had alsvays been a source of gratification to him that the brethren had elected Bro . Edsvards to preside over the lodge . He had carried out his duties most ably , had attended regularly , had svorked most efficiently , and in finishing up his year had added the keystone to his Masonic labours by installhis

ing successor . Bro . Edsvards tendered his thanks , remarking that svhen "p assumed the government of the lodge he felt great ¦ hfiidence in undertaking the svork . He had dreaded svhat was m store for him , lest he should prove unable to carry out jus duties . Nosv , hosvever , he svas able to look back upon his Mastership svith gratification ; thanks to the support lie had received from the members of the lodge his year of olhce had

been a pleasure to him—he had such a united and kind-hearted body of brethren to preside over that the work had been light and the enjoyment frequent . The Worshipful Master then proposed " The Health of the other Past Masters , " briefly referring to the services each had rendered to the lodge . Bro . Scales said , in reply , that he had alsvays felt a great Pleasure in attending the lodge , and hoped to do so for

many years to come . Bro . VV . M . Stiles , svho follosved , considered the Past Masters svould have very little to do during the coming year > for svith Bro . Lovegrove in the chair there svas no " f u outs , de assistance . Should , hosvever , the services 01 the Past Masters be required , they svere all ready and willing to respond . Bro . Henry Stiles also replied , andjthen ' the W . M . pro- ' Posed the toast of " The Visitors . "

H n ' * vyer - Stimson , Wells , Palmer , Hudson , and "aidsvin acknosvledged the compliment briefly , svhile Bro . ocurrah expressed at length the gratification it svas to him ° attend the meetings of this popular lodge . It svas popuar lor tsvo reasons—first , because it had always been second none in its working , every brother svho had occuinai i 1 cha " navin S been aole to do the work in a asterl y manner ; and secondly , because it svas a thoroughly * ° spitable lodge . Bro . Scurrah assured the brethren he

looked upon the Metropolitan Lodge as an exemplification of true hospitality . He knew many of its members , and looked upon them as being thorough good Masons . Their Worshipful Master svas his immediate Past . Master in the Henry Levander Lodge , and had there proved himself a

svorthy brother and a true gentleman . The more brethren knesv of him the more they svould appreciate him . The Master having proposed the toast of "The Officers , " svith svhich he coupled " The Health of the Treasurer and Secretary , " and Bros , Knight , Edmonds , Perks , and others having acknosvledged it , the Tylcr brought the proceedings to a close .

and Benevolent Fund , and no liabilities whatever , svas received and adopted . Bro . J . H . Bird svas then passed to the Second Degree , and Messrs . Branch and Atkins initiated . The installation of the W . M . elect , Bro . T . I . Bird , svas proceeded svith , the ceremony being most ably performed by Bro . Fennell . The W . The toast of " The Queen and the Craft , " and " The M . W . the Grand Master , " svere first given and heartily received . "The Pro Grand Master and the rest of the Grand

Officers follosved , and Bro . Raymond Thrupp responded , remarking that he felt it a great honour to reply for such distinguished Masons as the Pro "Grand Master and the rest of the Grand Officers . Those svho attended Grand Lodge knesv hosv ably those brethren fulfilled their duties . Among the most difficult duties of the Grand Master and his advisers svas that of selecting those to be honoured svith the purple ; but he believed the selections of the Grand

Master svere accepted loyally , and that they svere generally the right men . Bro . Buss , P . G . Asst . Sec , also replied , and expressed the pride and satisfaction he felt that , after 30 years' services , he had retired svith the good opinion of the Craft . Bro . Cottebrune , P . G . Purst ., congratulated the lodge on its prosperity , svhich he considered svas largely due to its first Master and present Secretary , Bro . John Mason . The next toast svas "' The Prov . Grand Master , Sir

Francis Burdett , " svhich svas most heartily received . The Worshipful Master , in proposing the toast of "The D . G . M . and Officers , " remarked that the Elliot Lodge svas the first lodge Bro . Thrupp had visited after receiving his patent of D . G . M ,, and he considered him as one of themselves , Bro . Thrupp thanked the W . M ., and said it svas alsvays a great pleasure to him to visit the Elliot Lodge , svhich was one of the best , and best worked , in the province . The ,

duties performed by Bro . Fennell that day as Installing Master he had never seen excelled . They had in their present Master an excellent svorking Mason , and he asked the members to give him their thorough support during his year of office . Bro . Fennell , I . P . M ., then proposed "The Health of the VV . M . " Most present , he said , svere perfectly acquainted svith him , and knesv his abilities . They had been able to

judge that night of the qualifications essential to a Master of a lodge , and they ss'ould all agree svith him that Bro . Bird possessed them in an eminent degree . He svished him all happiness and prosperity during his year of office . Bro . Bird , in returning thanks , said he had looked forward svith a considerable amount of interest to filling the chair of that lodge . It svas a position that any member might be proud of ; but , as an initiate in that lodge , it svas

to himself particularly gratifying . He trusted they svould give him plenty of svork to do , svhich to him svas alsvays a pleasure , in svhatever position he found himself . The Worshipful Master then gave the toast cf " The Installing Master and the other Past Masters . " Bro . Fennell had afforded them many opportunities to observe the manner in svhich he did his svork . Of the other P . M . 's he might say that one svas born a Mason , but svas not contented

svith that , but became one a second time . Bro . Pearson svas also an able svorker . He thought they symbolised the three pillars in Masonry—Wisdom in the person of Bro . Mason , the founder ; Strength in Bro . Pearson , svho had been and still svas the Treasurer ; and Beauty in the person of Bro . Fennell , svho had performed the ceremonies in an exceedingly beautiful manner . Bro . Mason in replying , congratulated the W . M , on the

position he had attained , svhich , hosvever , his merits fully deserved . Bro . Pearson said that he had had the privilege of introducing many members , and , amongst others , their VV . M ., Bro . Bird . He joined svith all in svishing him a very prosperous and happy year of office . The VVorshipfuI Mastsr then gave the toast of ' * Thc Charities . " The distinguishing characteristic of a Freemason should be Charity , and they possessed some of the

noblest Charities in the land . Their esteemed Bro . Mason was connected , as they knesv , svith the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and they had also present Bro . Terry , the svorthy Secretary of that Institution , svho svas svell knosvn as one of the best exponents of the ceremonies of the Craft , conducting svith equal ability consecrations and installations , and also as an eloquent pleader on behalf of the Charities , svhether it svas the Benevolent , or either of

the other Institutions . After a nesv Charity Song , written by Bro . Mason , had been rendered by that brother , in his svell-knosvn style , Bro . Terry replied , and said it was usual on the night svhen a nesv piece svas produced to call for the author and have him introduced to the audience . Bro . Mason thereupon modestly bosved his acknosvledgments , and Bro . Terry proceeded to thank the brethren for the reception of that toast .

He remarked that the Charities svas no idle toast in the Elliot Lodge . He claimed for the Benevolent Institution that it was greatly in need of their increased support . By the admission of an additional number of annuitants this year they had added permanentl y to the expenditure a sum of jC ' 740 annually , and it was a matter of urgent necessity that the contributions should be maintained and increased to enable the committee

to support the annuitants already elected , and to admit those alsvays applying fcr admission . He asked the members and the visitors from other lodges to help . The true spirit of Masonry , he knesv , abounded in the Elliot Lodge , and they could not offer a greater compliment to the VV . M . than to make his list for the next festival the largest on record . The toast of " The Initiates " follosved , and was

responded to by Bro . Branch in a very able speech . " The Visitors " and " The Officers " next given , and the Tyler ' s toast closed a very pleasant evening . We cannot conclude our report of this meeting svithout briefly noticing the menu card , designed by the Secretary of the lodge , Bro . John Mason , P . M ., and printed at the Freemason Office . That worthy brother ' s artistic taste is svidely knosvn , but in respect of

this card he seems to have surpassed all his previous efforts in the svay of happy and occasionally unique illustration . His jokes likesvise , his svise sayings and modern instances , his easy adaptation , in part or svholly , of appropriate quotations to particular persons or toasts , svere appreciated on all hands , and rightly svon him the applause of the svhole meeting . And as if these many aids to the general

enjoyment of the day svere not enough , Bro . Mason both svrote and sang tsvo capital songs , one in honour of the W . M ., Bro . Bird , and the other in behalf of the Charities . Both svere given admirably , and svere , as they deserved to be , loudly applauded , ln fine , it will be gathered from these fesv remarks that if Bro . Mason svas not himself the host of the day , he svas a host in himself as regards the day ' s success . —_

ROYAL KENSINGTON LODGE ( No . 1627 ) . —This lodge met on Friday , the Gth inst ., at Freemasons ' Hall , under the presidency of Bro . H . P . Hay , W . M . The svork consisted of raising Bro . M . Hay in a style which was a fitting climax to a very successful year of office . The brethren invested as officers of the

Thrupp thanked the W . duties performed by Bro .
