The toast of " The Queen and the Craft , " and " The M . W . the Grand Master , " svere first given and heartily received . "The Pro Grand Master and the rest of the Grand
Officers follosved , and Bro . Raymond Thrupp responded , remarking that he felt it a great honour to reply for such distinguished Masons as the Pro "Grand Master and the rest of the Grand Officers . Those svho attended Grand Lodge knesv hosv ably those brethren fulfilled their duties . Among the most difficult duties of the Grand Master and his advisers svas that of selecting those to be honoured svith the purple ; but he believed the selections of the Grand
Master svere accepted loyally , and that they svere generally the right men . Bro . Buss , P . G . Asst . Sec , also replied , and expressed the pride and satisfaction he felt that , after 30 years' services , he had retired svith the good opinion of the Craft . Bro . Cottebrune , P . G . Purst ., congratulated the lodge on its prosperity , svhich he considered svas largely due to its first Master and present Secretary , Bro . John Mason . The next toast svas "' The Prov . Grand Master , Sir
Francis Burdett , " svhich svas most heartily received . The Worshipful Master , in proposing the toast of "The D . G . M . and Officers , " remarked that the Elliot Lodge svas the first lodge Bro . duties performed by Bro . Fennell that day as Installing Master he had never seen excelled . They had in their present Master an excellent svorking Mason , and he asked the members to give him their thorough support during his year of office . Bro . Fennell , I . P . M ., then proposed "The Health of the VV . M . " Most present , he said , svere perfectly acquainted svith him , and knesv his abilities . They had been able to
judge that night of the qualifications essential to a Master of a lodge , and they ss'ould all agree svith him that Bro . Bird possessed them in an eminent degree . He svished him all happiness and prosperity during his year of office . Bro . Bird , in returning thanks , said he had looked forward svith a considerable amount of interest to filling the chair of that lodge . It svas a position that any member might be proud of ; but , as an initiate in that lodge , it svas
to himself particularly gratifying . He trusted they svould give him plenty of svork to do , svhich to him svas alsvays a pleasure , in svhatever position he found himself . The Worshipful Master then gave the toast cf " The Installing Master and the other Past Masters . " Bro . Fennell had afforded them many opportunities to observe the manner in svhich he did his svork . Of the other P . M . 's he might say that one svas born a Mason , but svas not contented
svith that , but became one a second time . Bro . Pearson svas also an able svorker . He thought they symbolised the three pillars in Masonry—Wisdom in the person of Bro . Mason , the founder ; Strength in Bro . Pearson , svho had been and still svas the Treasurer ; and Beauty in the person of Bro . Fennell , svho had performed the ceremonies in an exceedingly beautiful manner . Bro . Mason in replying , congratulated the W . M , on the
position he had attained , svhich , hosvever , his merits fully deserved . Bro . Pearson said that he had had the privilege of introducing many members , and , amongst others , their VV . M ., Bro . Bird . He joined svith all in svishing him a very prosperous and happy year of office . The VVorshipfuI Mastsr then gave the toast of ' * Thc Charities . " The distinguishing characteristic of a Freemason should be Charity , and they possessed some of the
noblest Charities in the land . Their esteemed Bro . Mason was connected , as they knesv , svith the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and they had also present Bro . Terry , the svorthy Secretary of that Institution , svho svas svell knosvn as one of the best exponents of the ceremonies of the Craft , conducting svith equal ability consecrations and installations , and also as an eloquent pleader on behalf of the Charities , svhether it svas the Benevolent , or either of
the other Institutions . After a nesv Charity Song , written by Bro . Mason , had been rendered by that brother , in his svell-knosvn style , Bro . Terry replied , and said it was usual on the night svhen a nesv piece svas produced to call for the author and have him introduced to the audience . Bro . Mason thereupon modestly bosved his acknosvledgments , and Bro . Terry proceeded to thank the brethren for the reception of that toast .
He remarked that the Charities svas no idle toast in the Elliot Lodge . He claimed for the Benevolent Institution that it was greatly in need of their increased support . By the admission of an additional number of annuitants this year they had added permanentl y to the expenditure a sum of jC ' 740 annually , and it was a matter of urgent necessity that the contributions should be maintained and increased to enable the committee
to support the annuitants already elected , and to admit those alsvays applying fcr admission . He asked the members and the visitors from other lodges to help . The true spirit of Masonry , he knesv , abounded in the Elliot Lodge , and they could not offer a greater compliment to the VV . M . than to make his list for the next festival the largest on record . The toast of " The Initiates " follosved , and was
responded to by Bro . Branch in a very able speech . " The Visitors " and " The Officers " next given , and the Tyler ' s toast closed a very pleasant evening . We cannot conclude our report of this meeting svithout briefly noticing the menu card , designed by the Secretary of the lodge , Bro . John Mason , P . M ., and printed at the Freemason Office . That worthy brother ' s artistic taste is svidely knosvn , but in respect of
this card he seems to have surpassed all his previous efforts in the svay of happy and occasionally unique illustration . His jokes likesvise , his svise sayings and modern instances , his easy adaptation , in part or svholly , of appropriate quotations to particular persons or toasts , svere appreciated on all hands , and rightly svon him the applause of the svhole meeting . And as if these many aids to the general
enjoyment of the day svere not enough , Bro . Mason both svrote and sang tsvo capital songs , one in honour of the W . M ., Bro . Bird , and the other in behalf of the Charities . Both svere given admirably , and svere , as they deserved to be , loudly applauded , ln fine , it will be gathered from these fesv remarks that if Bro . Mason svas not himself the host of the day , he svas a host in himself as regards the day ' s success . —_

Among the most difficult duties of the Grand Master and his advisers svas that of selecting those to be honoured svith the purple ; but he believed the selections of the Grand

duties performed by Bro .
