Roberts , F . Walker , G F . Rotherham , J . Bond , and T . N . Holliday , Stwds . The I . P . M . was presented with a valuable Past Master ' s jewel , which was suitably acknowledged .

Later , the Festival of St . John was celebrated at the Town Hall , the proceedings being of a very gratifying character . The hall had been tastefully decorated , and the catering was most satisfactorily performed by Mrs . Rockliff . After the repast , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured . The VV . M ., in giving the loyal toasts , said her Majesty , whose name the lodge bore , had added to this record-making age a record reign and a record in the affections of the people .

In responding to the toast of "The Officers of Grand Lodge , Present and Past , " Bro . Goodacre commended the working of the lodge , and remarked especially on the efficiency of Bro . Roberts . Replying for " The Officers of Prov . Grand Lodge , Present and Past , " the Prov . S . G . W . said that to whatever rank Bro . Franklin-HinJle might attain in the future , he could receive no higher honour than that of having been the unanimous choice of the lodge .

The I . P . M . gave " The W . M ., " which was accorded musical and processional honours , this ceremony being very successfully marshalled , and evoking much enthusiasm . The W . M ., in reply , said he was the seventh W . M . of the lodge , the present position of which amply justified its foundation . Bro . the Rev . Dr . Porter proposed "The Installing Mister" in a very felicitous

speech . Bro . Sykes , P . M ., gave "The Worshipful Masters of the Southport and Haslingden Lodges , " observing that Southport and Haslingden presented a contrast in Masonry , Southport having comparatively young lodges , while Haslingden had lodges dating back to a period before Southport received its name . The combination of Southport with such old places as Preston and Haslingden enhanced the interest of a gathering that would be memorable in the annals of Southport Freemasonry .

Bros . Sutherst , 2 S 3 , and Carr responded for the Amity and Commerce Lodges , Haslingden , and response was also made on behalf if the Southport lodges . Bro . Dr . Stopford , S . W ., gave " The Visiting Brethren . " Bro . Thomas Hamer , P . G . P ., rrsponded for the numerous brethren included in the toast . Bro . Lewis , P . M ., proposed "The Masonic Charities . "

The W . M . gave "The Newly-invested Officers , " and Bro . McKinnell " The Musical Brethren . " To the newly-elected Tyler , Bro . Kirkbride , was entrusted the final toast . The musical and elocutionary programme was of a most acceptable order , including several capital songs by Bros . Evans , violin solos by Bro . Thomas Shaw , instrumental trios by Bros . T , E . Chambers , Oimrod , and Connard , and recitations by Bros . Blarney and Roberts . . _

Letters of apology were received from Bros . Colonel Le Gendre N . Starkie , Prov . G . M ., and Sir George Pdkington ( on whom P . P . G . honours have just been conferred ) . Bro . Leslie Harris , who had promised musical sketches , sent a telegram of apology , and his place was filled by other musical brethren . The lodge already possessed a portrait of the first W . White Rose of York Lodge , No . 2491 .

INSTALLATION OF BRO . WM . GUNSTONE . The yearly festival of this prosperous and progressive lodge has again come round , and was celebrated in true White Rose fashion , on Friday , the Gth inst ., in the Freemasons' Hall , in Surrey-street , Sheffield . Only founded in 1 S 93 , the Iodge , by its excellent woiking , its abundant hospitality , its musical reputation , but , perhaps , more than all , by its evident desire in all respects to conduct its affairs on true Masonic lines , has established a reputation in its brief life which , whilst it is in the highest degree creditable to its founders , will entail the greatest circumspection amongst its rulers , and lve

a corres ponding propriety in its members , fully and fairly to maintain . The lirst two W . Ms , were men with considerable Masonic experience , men who had previously ruled lodges . The retiring occupant of the chair , Bro . C F . Brindley , was in that particlar untried , was the first who came from below the dais , but if his presidency over the White Rose of York Lodge during the year just expired is to be taken as representing Ihe material from which its rulers are to be derived , the future of No . 2491 is assured . Unlike many others , the lodge is not anxious to increase its numbers too rapidly , and whilst it is entirely free from even a tinge of exclusiveness , it is determined to establish .

without possibility of doubt , the htness of those who aspire to join its ranks . This year it has admitted three initiates and one joining member , and now numbers 39 only , all told . The popularity of the lodge , not in Sheffield alone , but in VVest Yorkshi re and Derbyshire , was made manifest by the extraordinary number of guests who assembled within itr > walls , on this its annual festival , to do honour to itsjneoming VV . M ., Bro . VVm . Gunstone who , it is no exaggeration to say , is beloved and respected by all . Unaffected , even quiet , Bro . Gunstone , by his genial humour and his goodness of heart , has won his way amongst his brethren and found a phce in their affections , of which he may be proud . We purpose publishing a biographical sketch of Bro . Gunstone , together with his

portrait , in next week ' s Ircemason , so that it will be needless at present in his regard to say more . Bro . Gunstone was placed in the chair of K . S . by Bro . Brindley , the retirinjr W . M ., at a Board numbering 33 Installed Masters . Everyone of the eight Masters of ledges in the town ( save one who was laid up by accident ) , two Grand Officers , and a large number of Provincial Officers were present , and the opinion was universal that Bro . Brindley's rendering of the installation ceremony was excellent . The brethren comprised Bros . C . F . Brindley , W . M . ; W . Gunstone , S . W . ; C A . Hahn , J . M ., and the whole ceremony , including the addresses , was most ably and beautifully rendered by Bro . C . F . Brindley , the retiring Mister . The working tools of

the various Degrees were given by Bras . John Shaw , P . M . ; Joseph Jackman , P . M . ; and A . Macredie , P . M ., and the incidental music , which has always been a characteristic of the White Rose of York Lodge , added greatly to the effect . This , composed by Bro . T . VV . Hanforth , Prov . G . Org ., was sung by Bros . Foxon , Gidsby , and Hunt , to the accompaniment of Bro . Peasegood on the excellent little organ for which the Sheffield Masonic Hall is famous . Everything went smoothly and without a hitch , showing

that every detail had been studied and carefully reheirsed . With kindly words and suitable admonitions , the W . M . invested his ollicers as follows : Bros . C . F . Brindley LP . M . ; C . A . Hahn , S . W . ; Dr . John Stokes , J . W . ; Joseph Craven , Treas . ; f ! W . Hanforth , Mus . Bac , Sec . ; C . Ariel Wright , S . D . ; M . T . Miner , J . D . ; W . II . Peasegcod , Org . ; J . John Hunt wis for the third time elected to represent the lodge 011 the West Yorkshire Cnirity Com nittee .

Apologies were announced from Bros , the Right Hon . W . Lawies Jackson . M . P P . G . M . ; John C Malcolm , G . D ., D . P . G . M . ; H . Allen and J . A . Godwin , J . P ., P . G . Wardens ; and in my others . After a chorus of "Hearty good wishes " from G . Officers , Pcov . G . Officers , visitors , and brethren , the lodge wis closed , and the brethren went do * n to dinner . This was served in the style for which Bro . Turner , the hall-keeper , andhis wife have become famous , and the tables were lavishly decorated with a profusion of lovely chrysanthemums . Those who sat down were upwards of 90 in number , and the dinner was excellent .

After the thanksgiving , " Deum laudate , " by Dr . J . Smith , had bsen sung by the choir , The W . M . rose and gave the toast of " The Queen . " The nearer the time approaches when her Majesty will complete a reign of 60 years the more heartily is the toast received . This was amply illustrated , and the Nitional Anthem sung in true Yorkshire fashion . In proposing the next toast , " The M . W . G . Master , the Pro G . Mister , an ! the Officers of Grand Lodge , " the Worshipful Master spoke in very eulogistic terms of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales and the Right Hon . the Earl of Lithom . Better rulers

they could not have , he declared , nor could they accord them greater respect thin they by their eminent services were entitled to . They were especially honoured that e / ening by having with them a distinguished guest , a present Officer of Grand Lodge , a brother who , by his talent and industry , had made a name for himself in the musical world , a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music , Honorary Organist to the Grand Masters ' Lodge , and Grand Organist of England for the present year . Him they were delighted to greet . They had also Bro . W . H . Brittain , an old Past Mister of Sheffield and a Past Grand Officer . He was an honorary Past Master of the lodge , and was alwiys welcome . He would couple the name of Bro . Rose with the toast .

The toast was drunk with great enthusiasm , and " Go J bless the Prince of Wiles " was sung , Bro . John Hunt taking the solo . Bro . Henry R . Rose , in reply , said he considered it a great privilege to be called upon to reply to the toast , which had been so sincerely proposed and so loyally received by the brethren . He had heard of the excellence of Yorkshire Masonic working and of the genuine character of Yorkshire hospitality , and by that , his first , visit toa Yorkshire lodge had fully realised both . As to the Grand Officers , he ( Bro . Rose ) had in his capacity as Grand Organist been associated with their Pro Grand MasW . r . nr ** I iihnm ~ A

, the others on two or three notable occasions . The first was when , on Ascensi on Day , the Pro Grand Master consecrated the Household Brigade Lodge . The M . W . Grand Master was not only present at the ceremony , but also consented to become the first W . M . of the new lodge . The second was when the Navy Lodge was consecrated , the first Master of which was Admiral Markham , who was a good ruler and a good Mason . 'Their Pro Grand Master , he considered , set an example to all of them , and wis a pattern of Masonic worth and Masonic excellence . Very much the same might be said

of the others , and they were all , he could confidently assert , wishful to do their utmost to further the progress of the Craft , which they all so much loved . Speaking of himself , he was proud of the position he held as Grand Organist . It had been filled by many distinguished musicians and Masons before him , amongst whom he might name Sir Michael Costa , Sir Arthur Sullivan , and Sir Walter Parratt , the last a West Yorkshire man . He ( Bro . Rose ) thanked Bro . Brindley for the invitation he had given him to visit the lodge and his many dear Sheffield friends . He had received signal proofs all round of Yorkshire welcome . He congratulated the lodge upon possessing such ex-

M ., Bro . Kilby , and a companion portrait was received during the evening of Bro . Dann , I . P . M ., the first initiate .

D . ; M . T . Miner , J . D . ; W . II . Peasegcod , Org . ; J .
