A SEVERE GALE from the North-east sprang up in the English Channel and along the East coast generally , on Sunday morning , causing considerable damage to shipping . The British and Eastern Shipping Company ' s vessel , the Soudan , bound from the North for Rio Janeiro , with 3000 tons of coal on board , was wrecked off Yarmouth , having struck on the Cross Sand in a fog , and all efforts to float her proved fruitless .
