Canning proceeded with the three addresses , and

concluded a ceremony seldom , if ever , excelled . It was both word perfect and most impressive , and for it he was awarded a cordial vote of thanks , the same to be inscribed on the minutes of the lodge . And it was further resolved that a copy of the vote of thanks should be emblazoned on vellum , mounted , and framed , at a cost not exceeding five guineas , and presented

to Bro . Canning for his excellent work of installing his successor that day . He was also presented with a Past Master's jewel , of the value of 15 guineas , and a Past Master's collar and pendant , of the value of £ 3 7 s . Cd ., both jewel and collar being manufactured and engraved by Bro . George Kenning , of Little Britain , London . Bro . Canning having returned thanks , the lodge was closed , and

the brethren sped by special train to the London Tavern , Fenchurch-street , where a superb banquet awaited them , and which was fully enjoyed . Among other brethren present were Bros . C . M ., 212 ; G . H . Campbell and Capt . W . Young , of 913 ; W . T . Griffiths , 781 , and others . The usual loyal and Grand Lodge toasts having been honoured , the Immediate Past Master proposed in glowing

terms the toast of " I he VV . M . " He said it was a toast that they had always been in the habit of receiving- with a great deal of pleasure . There were agoodly number of Past Masters present , who had that day witnessed and marked how zealously and how ably Bro . Wood had already acquitted himself in his new position of W . M ., and he felt sure that as he had that day , so would he during his year of office , carry out

the duties entrusted to him with honour and credit to the lodge . Bro . Wood , who was cheered lustily on rising to respond , said he had remarked some years ago that it was a pity there was not a lodge of elocution , in which an aspirant for the chair might practice and be instructed in the art of public speaking , so that when he attained the chair he

might have no difficulty in responding to the toast of his health , and propose the other toasts in such a manner as would not make him one of the most unhappy men upon earth . Now , he would say that he was deeply indebted to Bros . Ives and Canning for most of his knowledge of the ritual , and if Bro . Jolly would only take him in hand , and teach him how to make a speech , he was sure they would

have nothing further to complain of him on that score . At present he felt like the best friend of man—the dog—who never had its eyes opened until nine days after its birth , so they must excuse him if his speech was not the proper sort of speech a W . M . should make at present . He should endeavour during the coming year so to work the Degrees that at the end of his year of office they would welcome

him as one who had done his duty to their satisfaction and to the credit of the lodge . The toast of "The Installing Officer" followed , and , in response , Bro . Canning said it took a load off his mind to hear them say that he had performed the ceremony as well as those excellent predecessors who had worked it before him , and he felt that he had done so by their hearty

reception of the toast . He then referred to the late Old People ' s Festival , and thanked the brethren for sending him up with £ 6 7 13 s . 6 d ., which showed their metal , and enabled him to beat no less than five provinces with over 20 Stewards . He trusted the G . A . O . T . U . would give their W . M . health

and strength to carry out his duties , and concluded by making an appeal on behalf of Mrs . Page , a candidate for a pension . "The Past Masters" having been toasted , was responded to severally by those present , and "The Initiates" were honoured , and returned thanks .

Bro . Penfold , in responding for "Thc Visitors , " said he felt somewhat of a delinquent at not being at the working of the lodge , but could not get down in time , but from all around him he heard the highest eulogiums upon the manner in which Bro . Canning had installed his successor , and also upon the manner in which his successor had initiated the candidates ; it showed them that the lodge had a prosperous future before it , and they ought to be proud of it .

It was an excellent trait in the working of a lodge where each succeeding Master installed his successor , as the Masters of the lodge for many years past had done . He was exceedingly pleased to hear that Bro . Canning had taken up such a good sum forthe Old People , and would be glad , if it was not too late , to put ten guineas to it himself . He was pleased to be present as he had spent one of the most delightful evenings in his life , and could heartily con-

gratulate them upon the evident prosperity of their excellent lodge . Our distinguished brother was cheered heartily during and at the conclusion of his speech . Bros . Kenneday , Spinks , Allen , Dale , Webber , and others responded to the toast . " The Masonic Charities " was responded to by Bro . C . Lewis .

Bros . Knight , Fowling , and | ollv responded for the "Officers . " The singing was excellent , the contributors being Bvos . Barwick , Stampford , Burton , Aillud , Spinks , Campbell , and others , and altogether the affair was most enjoyable , thanks especially to the splendid catering of thc esteemed manager of the hotel .

PLUMSTEAD . Pattison Lodge ( No . 9 ? 3 ) - —There was a large muster of the brethren and friends of the above lodge at its usual monthly meeting on Thursday , the 6 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Mount Pleasant . The chair was filled by Bro . C . H . Lawson , P . M ., in the unavoidable absence of the W . AL , Bro . B . de B . Lopez , who was away

at Nice attending a sick brother , while the decease of the late esteemed Bro . Keeble , I . P . M ., left the chair at Bro . Lawson's disposal . The lodge having been opened , and the minutes of the previous meeting confirmed , the ballot was taken for Bro . A . Eaton , late of 700 , as a joining member , and it proved unanimous . Bro . Blest was raised to the Third Decree .

The Worshipful Master ' s working was perfection itself , while the musical portion of the ceremony by the Pattison choir , under the direction of Bro . F . Tyler , Org ., added a rave impressiveness to the ritual . The sum of 10 guineas was voted to Bro . Warren , P . M . 700 , as an addition to his list for the Boys , ancl then the lodge was closed . Besides the VV . M ., the following Past Masters , officers ,

and visitors were present : Bros . C Coupland , P . M ., P . P . J . G . W ., Treasurer ; E . Denton , P . M ., P . P . S . G . D ., Secretary ; H . Mason , P . M . ; F . Barry , P . M . ; C lolly , P . M . ( Hon . ); Col . Hughes , M . P ., S . W . ; VV . " Busbridge , J . W . j VV . Sanders , S . D . j VV . C . Taylor , J . D . j Dr . ' E . Bryson , I . G . ; C . Clapham , D . C . ; J . J . " Collins , A . D . C ; F . Tyler , Org . ; J . H . Bull , Asst . Org . ; G . Kennedy , P . M . 1536 , P . P . G . S . B . ; J . H .

Price , VV . M . ; Dr . H . VV . Roberts , W . M ., P . P . J . G . W . Middx . ; A . Paterson , J . Warren , P . M . and Sec . 700 ; J . H . Roberts , P . M . andTreas . 700 ; J . Richardson , 152 S ; J . Lawson , S . D . 17 S 9 ; R . Smith , 1000 ; F . G . Nichols , P . M . 706 ; W . Bidgood , 700 ; and Escott , P . M . Naval College Lodge . The dinner having been discussed , and the usual loyal and Grand Lodge toasts honoured , that of " Earl Amherst , Provincial Grand Master of the Province of Kent" evoked

great enthusiasm . In proposing the toast of " Bro . Eastes , and the rest of the Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the Worshipful Master said they in that district owed a deep debt of gratitude to Bro . Eastes , while his services in the cause of Freemasonry in the province had endeared him to every Mason in it . He coupled with the toast the name of Bro . Kennedy .

Bro . Kennedy , in response , said he was confident that if Bro . Eastes had been present to see the splendid working of the VV . M . and his officers that night , he would have been proud of them . For himself he could say that it was no more than he expected to see , knowing how able a worker and how perfect an one Bro , Lawson was . It would be his duty at the next meeting of Prov . Grand Lodge to report to

Bro . Eastes what he had seen that night , and he felt sure Bro . Eastes and their noble Prov . G . M . would be proud to hear it . The acting W . M . then proposed the toast of * ' The W . M ., " and said he did so with much more pleasure in his absence than he should have felt if Bro . Lopez had been present , because it gave him an opportunity of speaking of and

praising- that brother s work in such terms as , while he fully deserved them , might , if spoken to his face , appear too much like flattery . He knew that Bro . Lopez had the interest of the lodge at heart . He was now abroad attending and waiting on a sick biother , and had many duties to perform when at home , yet he found time to come down and carry out his duties as Master of that lodge , which

duties he not only did well , but by his geniality had endeared himself to every member of the lodge . He felt sure that their distinguished Bro . Coupland , who was partner with Bro . Lopez , would convey to that brother the excellent and hearty good wishes of every member of the lodge . Bro . Col . Hughes proposed the toast of " The Past Masters , " first of all congratulating them upon the great

improvement made in the hall for the comforts of the brethren , and after feelingly referring - to the case of the late Bro . Capt . Pownalls Child , who is a candidate for the Boys ' School , said he was pleased to see such excellent Past Masters present , and they were the back-bone of the lodge , and he asked the brethren to drink the toast heartily . Bros . Coupland and Lawson returned thanks . Bros . Roberts , Escott , Price , Pattison , and Warren

responded for "The Visitors . " " The Officers" and Tyler ' s toasts concluded the proceedings . The singing by Bros . Nichols , Lever , Smith , Hammond , and others were most excellent , while Bro . Tyler , who presided at the piano , Bro . Walker , J 53 C , with the cello , and Bro . Horton , with the violin , played solos , duets , and trios , to the intense gratification of every one present .

SOUTHAMPTON . Southampton Lodge ( No . 394 ) . —The last of the Southampton installations for the present year took place at the Masonic Hall , Albion-place , on the 20 th ult ., when Bro . M ., in responding for the province , referred to his recent presence in London at the installation of the Lord Mayor at the Mansion House as Master of the Drury Lane Lodge , saying that the Prince of Wales , as Grand Master , granted a dispensation permitting the ceremony to

be performed under such novel circumstances . Responding as the Installing Master , Bro . H . Lashmore said the minutes of the Southampton Lodge recorded a gathering under similar circumstances , which took place in days when dispensations were lightly treated and not often asked for . The VV . M . elect being ill on St . John ' s Day , the

brethren adjourned from the Masonic Hall , Bugle-street , to his private residence , and having installed him there , returned to the hall and finished their business . "The Health of the W . M .

Mason , P . M . ; F . Barry , P .

M . " was cordially drunk , and many "Hearty good wishes" were tendered him for a pleasant and successful year of office .

For 20 years had he presided oyer the destinies of the large Masonic

He was particularly gratified with the growth and increasing prosperity of No . 1793 ,

and it had pleased him to see how well the I . P . M . had installed his successor , and he was worthy of the jewel that had been presented to him .
