It is satisfactory to learn that Bro . Lord Magheramorne , whose health has latterly been anything but satisfactory , is much better . Prince Zu Carolath Schbnaich has been elected M . W . Grand Master of the Grand Lodge Royal York of Friendship at Berlin .

A handsome brass tablet , as a memorial to the late Bro . Col . King-Harman , M . P ., has recently been placed in the Parish Church of St . John ' s , Margate . Lady George Hamilton inaugurated a series of " Happy Evenings" at the Nichols-row Board School , Bethnal Green , on Monday evening .

The Prince of Wales consented to preside at the dinner of the Royal Literary Fund , which will be held at St . James's Hall on the 14 th May next . The late Mr . Michael Beveridge , who was Provost of Kirkcaldy , has bequeathed to the inhabitants the sum of £ 50 , 000 to purchase a public park and library .

Bro Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor ) presided at the - third annual dinner of the Devonians in London , at the Criterion , on Saturday last , the number of guests being 350 . The 5 8 th anniversary festival of the Linen and Woollen Drapers' Benevolent Institution was held at the Hotel Metropole on Friday , the 7 th inst ., the donations and subscriptions amounting to £ 3300 .

1 he Queen has forwarded , through her Private Secretary , General Sir Henry Ponsonby , her annual subscription of £ 50 to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution , of which she is the Patron . The French Ambassador and Madame Waddington , Bro . Lord and Lady Herschell , and Bro . the Hon . Sir Stafford and Lady Northcote were among the guests at the dinner party given by the Hon . Fitzroy and Mrs . Stewart at their residence in Egerton-gardens , on Tuesday evening .

Oxford made its appearance at Putney on Monday , after having done some solid hard work at Cookham . Both crews have been practising steadily , and the Cambridge , who were somewhat rough at first , are gradually settling into a good crew .

1 he Prince and Princess of Wales were present at the performance of the Guards' Burlesque in Chelsea Barracks on Tuesday evening , the Princesses Victoria and Maud accompanying . A numerous and distinguished company also assembled , among whom were Bro . Lord Cheylesmore and the Hon . Frances Eaton , and many old Guardsmen . The preformance went admirably .

The Bishop of London presided at a meeting held at Fulham Palace on Tuesday , for the purpose of promoting the establishment of the South-West Polytechnic Institute . It was announced that if the further £ 18 , 000 required to make up the necessary £ 50 , 000 to start with was raised , the Charity Commissioners would at once contribute towards the scheme .

Ihe Prince and Princess of Wales , with their daughter , the Princess Maud , visited the sixth annual Spring Horse Show at the Royal Agricultural Hall , Islington , on the 61 I 1 instant , when his Royal Highness presented the Victoria Challenge Cup , won by Bro . the Earl of Londesborough ' s mare , Ophelia , and the Elsenham Challenge Cup , won by Mr . Henry Moore's horse , Rufus .

The Children's Orchestra , conducted by Mr . Percy Armitage , had the honour of giving a performance before her Majesty , at Windsor Castle , on Tuesday evening . An excellent selection , which included several selections from " Faust , " was admirably performed by the young ladies , and greatly appreciated by her Majesty and her guests . After refreshments had been served , the party returned to town .

Certificates signed by the General commanding the Home District having been produced by the ist London Engineers , the 4 th Volunteer Battalion Royal West Surrey Regiment , and the 3 rd , 6 th , and 17 th Middlesex Volunteers " to the effect that they are now fully provided with accoutrements ,

& c , to the satisfaction of the War Oflice , Bro . Alderman Sir James Whitehead , Bart ., Past Lord Mayor , has handed to the colonel of each regiment a cheque from the Patriotic Volunteer Fund in satisfaction of the accounts . Grants to other Metropolitan Volunteer Corps will be made as VVar Office certificates to a like effect are sent in .

We are glad to hear there is no foundation forthe rumour which prevailed early in the week , in Berlin , that his Majesty the King of Holland is dangerously ill . It is expected that Bro . the Marquis of Hartington will return to England about the first week in April , and will take his seat in the House of Commons after the Easter

recess . The Shadwell Gierke Preceptory of Knights Templar will hold an emergency meeting on Thursday , the 20 th instant , at 33 , Golden-square . E . Sir Knight John Read , P . A . G . D . C , is E . Preceptor . A matinee was given at the Globe Theatre , on Tuesday , the 25 th ult ., and it is now announced that the proceeds , in the shape of a sum of £ 90 ios ., have been handed over to the Destitute Children ' s Dinner Fund .

Her Majesty will leave England for Aix-les-Bams on Tuesday , the 25 th instant . All the necessary arrangements have been made , and the Villa Victoria , where she will reside , has been thoroughly repaired and renovated . Bro . Sir M . VVhite Ridley , Bart ., M . P ., presided at a meeting of the Royal Commission on Civil Establishments on the Oth inst ., when Bro . Sir Charles Dilke gave evidence on the Foreign Office and the Diplomatic and Consular

Ser-. A sum of £ 40 , 000 is required towards the complete restoration of St . Saviour's Church , Southwark , and already we hear donations amounting to £ 17 , 125 have been received . The church is one of the most venerable in the Metropolis , and we have little doubt that the amount required will be readily obtained .

A special meeting of the Court of Aldermen was held at the Guildhall on Saturday last , under the presidency of Bro . Lord Mayor Sir H . A . Isaacs , when the death of Bro . Alderman Stone was announced , and a vote of condolence passed with our deceased brother ' s widow and family .

On Iuesday next , the iSth inst ., Bro . Maclean is to be presented with a testimonial by the Logic Club and enter- j tained at a banquet on his retirement after many years service as Preceptor of this club of instruction . A large gathering is expected of members of the club , their friends , and the dramatic profession .

Bro . J . G . Shaw-Lefevre has been appointed Chairman of the Select Committee of the House of Commons to inquire into the causes which have led to the decrease of the acreage under hop cultivation , and the serious displacement of labour caused thereby , and to report upon the best means , if any , for providing a remedy .

At a meeting of the Royal Sussex Preceptory of Knights Templar at the Masonic Hall , Torquay , on Tuesday , the 4 th inst ., E . Sir Knight John Lane , E . Preceptor , presided . Sir Knight John Chapman , P . P . G . Reg ., Prov . A . D . C , was unanimously elected E . P . for the ensuing year , and E . Sir Knight William Taylor was elected Treasurer .

Among the guests at the party given by the Countess Stanhope , at her house in Grosvenor-place , on Saturday night last , were Bro . the Earl and Countess of Arran , Bro . the Marquis and Marchioness of Tweeddale , Bros . Among the principal members present in the Library ol the House of Commons on Thursday , the Gth inst ., when the Speaker unveiled a memorial bust of the late Lord Farnborough , better known as Sir Erskine May , who for so many years was Clerk to the House , were Bro . Lord Monk-Bretton and a number of those who knew the deceased well and intimately .

The medal struck by J . VV . Palmer , 2 S 1 , Strand , in commemoration of the jubilee of the penny postage stamp has been sent to her Majesty the Oueen . The medal has been accepted by the Piince and Princess of Wales and other members of the Royal Family , the Marquis of Salisbury , Mr . Gladstone , and Mr . Cecil Raikes , the Postmaster-General .

Next week Puck is to undergo entire transformation . The paper , the price of which will still remain at one penny , will be considerably enlarged , and a portrait in colours will be issued as a supplement every week . Independent in politics , Puck will aim at being a high-class satirical illustrated journal of a novel type . The ollices will be at IOS , Fleet-street .

The Princess of Wales , accompanied by her daughters , the Princesses Victoria and Maud , attended the concert given by Mdlle . Janotha , in St . James's Hall , on Tuesday , in aid of the "Madame Arabella Goddard Testimonial Fund . " There was a large audience present , who heartily applauded the excellent programme which had been prepared for the occasion .

The third exhibition of Photography was opened at the Crystal Palace , on Tuesday , among the exhibits being many novelties and improvements . The makers of photographic apparatus were very numerously represented , and there was a large collection of beautiful scenery contributed by the . nenibeis of different societies in the provinces . The arrangements do great credit to the executive of the exhibition .

The Savage Club Lodge had for election on Tuesday , the 4 th inst ., no less than nine joining members and 19 initiates . By a special dispensation from the M . W . G . M ., the VV . M . ( Bro . Will . E . Chapman ) was enabled to introduce 10 of the latter to the mysteries of the Craft . Bro . P . Soman is acting as Secretary during the severe illness of Bro . Paige ,

to whose family a vote of sympathy was passed . Before separating , six tresh names were submitted as members of this promising community of artists , scientists , and journalists , whose working under the present VV . M . is admirable . The lodge has decided to have a ball in May , and a Committee is making * the necessary arrangements .

In our report of the Emulation festival last week we stated that the 3 rd Section was worked by Bro . Bullen , but we are informed that that brother not being present , owing to indisposition , the work was taken up at a very short notice by Bro . VV . H . Kirby , J . W . 196 5 .

The Old Masonians will give their last smoking concert for the season at Anderton's Hotel , Fleet-street , on Friday evening next , the 21 st inst . An excellent programme has been prepared , which includes the names of several wellknown artistes . The Chairman on this occasion will be Mr . C Howard Uwins .

By an agreement between the Governments of Great Britain and Italy the limits of weight and the dimensions of packets of patterns of merchandise exchanged through the post are not to exceed the following : In weight , 350 grammes ( 12 1-302 . ) . In dimensions—length , 30 centimetres ( 11 '' in . ); breadth , 20 centimetres ( 7 ' , 'in . ); depth , 10 centimetres ( nearly 4 m . ) .

Bro . Sir John Gorst , M . P ., Sir William Houldsworth , and Mr . Burnett left London on Thursday night for Berlin to take part in the deliberations of the Berlin Labour Conference . Mr . David Dale , of Darlington , who has been invited by Lord Salisbury to be one of the British delegates , will follow them in time for the opening of the conference . The German Emperor is gratified at the manner in which the various nations have responded to his invitation .

Miss Minnie Hansford has handed £ 5 iSs . to the Mansion House Fund for the relief of the sufferers by the Llanerch Colliery explosion ; and Mr . T . Hansford and Mr . VV . H . Dering have handed £ 24 3 s . to Sir Henry Isaacs for the same object . This last sum was the result of a concert and demonstration at Greenwich . Miss Hansford had collected her subscription . The Lord Mayor presented the young lady with his portrait in appreciation of her efforts .

The Executive Council of the Edinburgh Exhibition has decided to set apart a special section for the exhibition of ancient and mediaeval musical instruments and appliances , music and works on musical subjects , and autographs and paintings , drawings and engravings of celebrated musicians . The organisation of this section has been entrusted to Mr . Robert A . Marr , author of "Music and Musicians" and " Music for the People , " and it is intended to make the collection as interesting and representative as possible .

Ihe Lord Mayor , Bro . Sir Henry A . Isaacs , will take the chair at the festival dinner of the Hampstead Home Hospital and Nursery Institute at the Hotel Metropole , on Thursday , the 20 th inst . Lord Knutsford , Lord George Hamilton , Sir Algernon Borthwick , Sir Andrew Clark , Sir Richard Temple , and Sir Spencer Wells are among the list of Stewards . The Mercers' Company have given a donation of 50 guineas towards the dinner , and Sir S . Maryon Wilson , Bart ., £ 100 .

On Wedesday , the polling for the election of an alderman for the Ward of Bassishaw , in the City , was held . The two candidates were Bro . A . J . Newton and Mr . Sheriff Harris , and the poll was demanded by the latter , who was unsuccessful on the show of hands . The voting was by ballot . At the close of the poll , the Lord Mayor declared the result to be—For Bro . Newton , 176 votes , and Mr . Sheriff Harris 13 C . Bro . Newton was accordingly declared

duly elected . Ihe new alderman is a son of Mr . G B . Newton , of Cottingham , near Hull , and was born in 18 49 . He is a shipowner and mevchant in London and Hull , and a member of the City Liberal Club . He was Sheriff of London and Middlesex last year . Bro . Newton was invested as S . W . of the newly-consecrated Grafton Lodge , No . 2347 , the same evening , and dined with the brethren who , as may be supposed , warmly congratulated him on his election .

On I' nday , the 7 th inst ., a Masonic Charity Ball , under the auspices of the Sykes Lodge , was given in the Assembl y Rooms , Driffield . The rooms had been most tastefully decorated , emblems of the Craft forming prominent features , one of the most admired of these being a device composed of lodge banners , the gift of Bro . T . Dixon , and also the Royal Arch shields and banners . About 120

ladies and gentlemen were present , including brethren from several neighbouring lodges . The arrangements were under the management of Bros . J . Elgey , P . P . G . P . ; J . Bordass , P . A . G . D . C ; J . Dunn , P . P . G . P . ; W . Highmoor , VV . M . ; H . Potts , P . G . S . B . ; and J . Kirby , Sec . Bro . J . W . Marshall , P . M ., acted as M . C . 'The refreshments were provided by Bro . J . Holtby , of the Buck Hotel .

A meeting of the Court of Governors of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution was held on Friday evening , the 7 th inst ., atthe Masonic Hall , Hope-street , Liverpool . BIM . J . de Bels Adams , one of the Vice-Presidents of the Charity , occupied the chair , and there was a very numerous attendance of Governors . The minutes of the annual court , the Finance Committee , and the General Committee having been read and confirmed , the election of

a number of children on the foundation of the institution was proposed and carried . The report of the work of the past year and the Treasurer ' s statement were unanimousl y adopted ; and , in view of certain proposed alterations in the by-laws of the institution , Bro . Captain Macnab , P . M . 241 ( one of the honorary secretaries of the "West Lancashire" ) , consented to withdraw the resignation of his office in the meantime . A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the proceedings .

The quarterly convocation of the Supreme Grand Chapter of Scotland was held on the 5 th inst . in Edinburgh . There was a large attendance of representative companions . The chair of tlie First Grand Principal was occupied by Comp . James Crichton , while the positions of Second and Third Grand Principals were filled by Comps . George Christie and John R . Paton . Comps . Edward Macbean , Maitland , and

James Simpson acted as ist , 2 nd , and 3 rd Sojourners respectively . It was resolved , as recommended by Supreme Committee , that the office of Grand Scribe E . be removed to Hanover-street , that a charier as prayed for be granted under the title of "Saltcoats and Ardrossan , " and that in future the minutes be printed and circulated among

members . Comp . George Christie , Southlield , Stirling , was appointed Prov . Grand Superintendent of Stirlingshire , in succession to the late Earl of Mar and Kellie . The Supreme Grand Chapter then proceeded to nominate Grand Office-bearers for 1 S 90-91 , and six members of Supreme Committee ,

The Children's Orchestra , conducted by Mr . Percy Armitage , had the honour of giving a performance before her Majesty , at Windsor Castle , on Tuesday evening . An excellent selection , which included several selections from " Faust , " was admirably performed by the young ladies , and greatly appreciated by her Majesty and her guests . After refreshments had been served , the party returned to town .

We are glad to hear there is no foundation forthe rumour which prevailed early in the week , in Berlin , that his Majesty the King of Holland is dangerously ill . It is expected that Bro . the Marquis of Hartington will return to England about the first week in April , and will take his seat in the House of Commons after the Easter

recess . The Shadwell Gierke Preceptory of Knights Templar will hold an emergency meeting on Thursday , the 20 th instant , at 33 , Golden-square . E . Sir Knight John Read , P . A . G . D . A matinee was given at the Globe Theatre , on Tuesday , the 25 th ult ., and it is now announced that the proceeds , in the shape of a sum of £ 90 ios ., have been handed over to the Destitute Children ' s Dinner Fund .

Her Majesty will leave England for Aix-les-Bams on Tuesday , the 25 th instant . Ser-. A sum of £ 40 , 000 is required towards the complete restoration of St . Saviour's Church , Southwark , and already we hear donations amounting to £ 17 , 125 have been received . The church is one of the most venerable in the Metropolis , and we have little doubt that the amount required will be readily obtained .

A special meeting of the Court of Aldermen was held at the Guildhall on Saturday last , under the presidency of Bro . Lord Mayor Sir H . A . Isaacs , when the death of Bro . Alderman Stone was announced , and a vote of condolence passed with our deceased brother ' s widow and family .

On Iuesday next , the iSth inst ., Bro . Maclean is to be presented with a testimonial by the Logic Club and enter- j tained at a banquet on his retirement after many years service as Preceptor of this club of instruction . The Princess of Wales , accompanied by her daughters , the Princesses Victoria and Maud , attended the concert given by Mdlle . Janotha , in St . James's Hall , on Tuesday , in aid of the "Madame Arabella Goddard Testimonial Fund . " There was a large audience present , who heartily applauded the excellent programme which had been prepared for the occasion .

The third exhibition of Photography was opened at the Crystal Palace , on Tuesday , among the exhibits being many novelties and improvements . The makers of photographic apparatus were very numerously represented , and there was a large collection of beautiful scenery contributed by the . nenibeis of different societies in the provinces . The arrangements do great credit to the executive of the exhibition .

The Old Masonians will give their last smoking concert for the season at Anderton's Hotel , Fleet-street , on Friday evening next , the 21 st inst . An excellent programme has been prepared , which includes the names of several wellknown artistes . The Chairman on this occasion will be Mr . C Howard Uwins .

Miss Minnie Hansford has handed £ 5 iSs . to the Mansion House Fund for the relief of the sufferers by the Llanerch Colliery explosion ; and Mr . T . Hansford and Mr . VV . H . Dering have handed £ 24 3 s . to Sir Henry Isaacs for the same object . This last sum was the result of a concert and demonstration at Greenwich . Miss Hansford had collected her subscription . The Lord Mayor presented the young lady with his portrait in appreciation of her efforts .

The Executive Council of the Edinburgh Exhibition has decided to set apart a special section for the exhibition of ancient and mediaeval musical instruments and appliances , music and works on musical subjects , and autographs and paintings , drawings and engravings of celebrated musicians . The organisation of this section has been entrusted to Mr . Robert A . Marr , author of "Music and Musicians" and " Music for the People , " and it is intended to make the collection as interesting and representative as possible .

Ihe Lord Mayor , Bro . Sir Henry A . Isaacs , will take the chair at the festival dinner of the Hampstead Home Hospital and Nursery Institute at the Hotel Metropole , on Thursday , the 20 th inst . Lord Knutsford , Lord George Hamilton , Sir Algernon Borthwick , Sir Andrew Clark , Sir Richard Temple , and Sir Spencer Wells are among the list of Stewards . The Mercers' Company have given a donation of 50 guineas towards the dinner , and Sir S . Maryon Wilson , Bart ., £ 100 .

On Wedesday , the polling for the election of an alderman for the Ward of Bassishaw , in the City , was held . The two candidates were Bro . A . J . Newton and Mr . Sheriff Harris , and the poll was demanded by the latter , who was unsuccessful on the show of hands . The voting was by ballot . At the close of the poll , the Lord Mayor declared the result to be—For Bro . Newton , 176 votes , and Mr . Sheriff Harris 13 C . Bro . Newton was accordingly declared

duly elected . Ihe new alderman is a son of Mr . G B . Newton , of Cottingham , near Hull , and was born in 18 49 . He is a shipowner and mevchant in London and Hull , and a member of the City Liberal Club . He was Sheriff of London and Middlesex last year . Bro . Newton was invested as S . W . of the newly-consecrated Grafton Lodge , No . 2347 , the same evening , and dined with the brethren who , as may be supposed , warmly congratulated him on his election .

On I' nday , the 7 th inst ., a Masonic Charity Ball , under the auspices of the Sykes Lodge , was given in the Assembl y Rooms , Driffield . The rooms had been most tastefully decorated , emblems of the Craft forming prominent features , one of the most admired of these being a device composed of lodge banners , the gift of Bro . T . Dixon , and also the Royal Arch shields and banners . About 120

ladies and gentlemen were present , including brethren from several neighbouring lodges . The arrangements were under the management of Bros . J . Elgey , P . P . G . P . ; J . Bordass , P . A . G . A meeting of the Court of Governors of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution was held on Friday evening , the 7 th inst ., atthe Masonic Hall , Hope-street , Liverpool . BIM . J . de Bels Adams , one of the Vice-Presidents of the Charity , occupied the chair , and there was a very numerous attendance of Governors . The minutes of the annual court , the Finance Committee , and the General Committee having been read and confirmed , the election of

a number of children on the foundation of the institution was proposed and carried . The report of the work of the past year and the Treasurer ' s statement were unanimousl y adopted ; and , in view of certain proposed alterations in the by-laws of the institution , Bro . Captain Macnab , P . M . 241 ( one of the honorary secretaries of the "West Lancashire" ) , consented to withdraw the resignation of his office in the meantime . A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the proceedings .

The quarterly convocation of the Supreme Grand Chapter of Scotland was held on the 5 th inst . in Edinburgh . There was a large attendance of representative companions . The chair of tlie First Grand Principal was occupied by Comp . James Crichton , while the positions of Second and Third Grand Principals were filled by Comps . George Christie and John R . Paton . Comps . Edward Macbean , Maitland , and

James Simpson acted as ist , 2 nd , and 3 rd Sojourners respectively . It was resolved , as recommended by Supreme Committee , that the office of Grand Scribe E . be removed to Hanover-street , that a charier as prayed for be granted under the title of "Saltcoats and Ardrossan , " and that in future the minutes be printed and circulated among

members . Comp . George Christie , Southlield , Stirling , was appointed Prov . Grand Superintendent of Stirlingshire , in succession to the late Earl of Mar and Kellie .
