Bro . the Duke of Fife has very kindly consented to preside at the jubilee festival of the Governesses' Benevolent Institution , which will take place on Wednesday , the / th June . Her Majesty has been pleased to approve of the appointment of Bro . the Marquis of Breadalbane to be Lord High Commissioner of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland .

According' to the Registrar-General ' s returns , the death rate for London fell from 21 to 20 . 4 per 1000 , or i . S below the corrected average . The deaths from influenza showed a slight increase . A " Book of Hours , " illuminated with marvellous beauty and finish by artists of the Milanese School , for which some years since the British Museum made an offer of £ 2000 , has been presented to the nation by Mr . Malcolm , of Pollalloch .

The marriage of Mr . George Bancroft , son of Bro . S . B . Bancroft , with Miss Effie Hare , eldest daughter of Mr . John Hare , was solemnised at All Saints' Church , Margaretstreet , on Monday , the bride being given away by her father . Bro . Sir Arthur Sullivan , who has been passing the last few days of the holidays in Rome and was expected to town on Thursday , will personally select the members of

the orchestra , which he will conduct at the opening ceremony of the Imperial Institute . The Marquis and Marchioness of Salisbury are expected to return to town fn m Hatfield on Tuesday next , the iSth inst ., when the House of Lords will resume its sittings after the Easter holidays . The Marquis has sent a donation of £ 300 to the Bishop of London ' s Fund .

The 37 th anniversary festival of the Dramatic and Musical Benevolent Fund was held under the presidency of the Lord Chamberlain , Bro . Lord Carrington , at the Hotel M ritropole on Monday evening , when donations exceeding £ 500 were announced . There was a large attendance of guests , among them being Bro . Sir Augustus Harris , who replied for the toast of " The Drama . "

The Paddington Chcral Association gave its second concert this season at the Kensington Town Hall on Tuesday evening , when the chief feature of the programme was Mr . J . F . Barnett's cantata , " The Ancient Mariner . " The choruses were admirably given , and the soloists gave very capable assistance , especially Master Sydney Lovett , who is gilted with a very sweet soprano voice and a refined style oi singing .

The marriage of Mr . John Charles Harford , son of the late Mr . J . 11 . Harford , wilh Blanche Amabel , second daughter of the late Bro . H . Cecil Raikes , M . P ., was soltmnist d atSt . The Royal Commission appointed to consider the conditions under which the amalgamation of the City and County of London can be effected , and to offer suggestions to that end , has been gazetted ithis week . The members are Mr . L . H . Courtney , M . P ., Sir Thomas H . Farrer , Mr . R . D . Holt , Bro . H . H . Crawford ( the City Solicitor ) , and Mr . E . 0 . Smith .

The Prince of Wales has returned to Marlborough House from his visit to his brother , the Duke of Edinburgh , at Devonport , and on Tuesday he visited his daughter , the Duchess oi Fife , at East Sheen Lodge . On the same day the Royal Commission on the Aged Poor resumed its sittings under the presidency of Lord Aberdare , his Royal Highness being present among the members and taking , as usual , a deep interest in the proceedings .

, The Oueen has been exceptionally favoured with line weather during her visit to Florence , and has been enabled to visit the chief places of interest in and around the city . On Monday her Majesty inspected the pictureg alleries at the Ufrisa Palace , through which she was conducted by the

Speaking at a lecture recently delivered in Exeter Hall , Strand , the subject beng the typewriter , Mr . H . S . Shultess-Young , barrister , said he had been interested in typewriters because it appeared to him that typewriting helped to stive the political question of employment for

women . In view of this it may be interesting to note an announcement made on the occaison of the lecture , viz ., that the Yost Typewriter Company now offers constant employment to lady pui chasers of machines who may wish to augment their incomes by doing copying work at their own homes .

The Marchioness of Salisbury opened a sale of work at Monken Hadley , near Barnet , on Wednesday , in aid of the Parish of St . Saviour ' s , Walthamstow . His Royal Highness the Commander-in-Chief will hold a Levee at the Horse Guards , Whitehall , on Friday , the 24 th

inst . Applications to attend must be addressed to the Military Secretary . It is officially announced that on and after the 1 st May the London and North-Western and Caledonian Railway Companies will discontinue running second-class carriages between stations in England and stations in Scotland .

The Duke of Westminster has kindly lent Grosvenor House for a meeting , which will be held on Friday , the 21 st instant , on behalf of the Young Women's Christian Association . The Duke will kindly preside on the

. Sir A . K . Rollit , M . P ., opened the fourth Industrial Exhibition which has been organised by the Holborn Saturday League in the interests of the working classes , and which is held under the patronage of the Prince and Princess Christian , the Duchess of Albany , and the Duchess of Teck .

A concert will be given at the Public Hall , Gravesend , on Thursday next , the 20 th inst ., in aid of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families Association , of which the Princess of Wales is President , under distinguished patronage , and with a programme in which the names of several eminent artistes appear .

The Duke of Cambridge has generously undertaken to preside at the anniversary festival , which will be held on Monday next , the 17 th inst ., in aid of the funds of the East London Hospital for Children , Shadweli . The Charity is located in one of the poorest neighbourhoods in the Eastend , and well deserves support .

On Monday , May 1 st , Mr . Gilbert Dalziel will publish from 99 , Shoe-lane the first number of his new weekly comic paper . The title is ' * Larks , " and the price is one half-penny . A strong staff of artists and authors has been got together , and the paper insures against railway accidents in the sum of £ 50 .

The anniversary of the declaration of Greek independence was publicly celebrated throughout Greece on Wednesday . The King and Oueen and the members of the Greek Royal Family , accompanied by the Princess of Wales , the Princesses Victoria and Maud , the Duke of York , and their

respective suites attended the solemn Te Deum , which was sung in the Cathedral at Athens in commemoration of the event , and there were also present Bro . Rear-Admiral Markham and a number of British officers ,, as well as the Diplomatic Body .

MASONIC PPESENTATION IN LIVERPOOL . —At the meeting of the Neptune Lodge , No . 1264 , held on the 4 th inst ., an interesting part of thc proceedings was a presentation to Bro . VV ihiam Kohn upon the occasion of his leaving Liverpool to reside in South Africa . TheW . M ., Bro . E . B . Ironside , in proposing " The Health of Bro . Kohn , " spoke of his many services to the lodge , and on behalf of the brethren , asked his acceptance of a suitably inscribed gold cigarcttee case . Bro . Kohn replied in suitable terms .

T he Masonic body , after the splendid success of the fete last year , have been enlarging their school at Ball ' s Bridge , and have plans and estimates for additions to their schools , which would cost between £ 11 , 000 and £ 12 , 000 to complete . At the board meeting of the Masonic Female

Orphan School held recently it was resolved : " That in consequence of the very great uncertainty as to the future for Ireland , it is not expedient to spend any more money at present on buildings , and that directions should be at once given to stop further expenditure on new work . "

A NEW MASONIC HAI . I . FOR CARIMIT . —Negotiations are in progress for the acquirement by the united lodges in Cardiff ol Guildford-street Chapel for the purposes of a Masonic hall . The purchase has , we understand , been almost coinpleied , but the new premises will not be Masonically occupied for , at least , 12 months , as thc lease

on the present hall has some time yet to run . If the negotiations are carried to a successful issue the chapel will be structurally altered so as to be made suitable for its new purposes , and it will then afford much better accommodation than the building at present utilised for Masonic purposes .

The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress gave what is known as the Easter Banquet at the Mansion House on Monday , there being present a distinguished company of guests , among whom were the Duke of Cambridge , the Bishop of London , who preached the Spital Sermon this year .

The Working Men ' s Lord's Day Rest Association at their meeting on Monday at the Holborn Restaurant , Sir Douglas Fox being the chairman , passed a resolution appealing to the Government , to both Houses of Parliament , to the London County Council , and to the Court of Common Council to uphold the laws which secure to the people their right to the rest of the Lord's Day .

C ., is of opinion that , considering the large amount of undetected crime in the country , and trie number of known habitual criminals , it would go a long way to diminish crime if means could be adopted by which the Super intendent of any district could be given authority to call upon any habitual criminal lo state privately before a magistrate what he was doing to earn an honest livelihood .

a heavy bereavement by the death of his wife , and this was doubtless the main cause of his falling into bad health . Besides having passed through the chair of his lodge , Bro . Brailey was a Past Provincial Grand Officer of Kent , and also took an active part in founding the Cornish Lodge , No . 2369 , about three years since . on the present hall has some time yet to run . If the negotiations are carried to a successful issue the chapel will be structurally altered so as to be made suitable for its new purposes , and it will then afford much better accommodation than the building at present utilised for Masonic purposes .
