Graham went away was in a very sad state of health but Bro . Graham , one or two days before leaving , said he could not go away without showing him some svmpathy and his kindly regards . The brother was far below him in social position , but Bro . Graham went to him and shook him by the hand , and spoke kindly words to him and trusted he should see him . in better health when he came back . That brother however died in another two months . He ( Bro . Scurrah ) did not judge of a man by

It was a pleasure to welcome back such a brother after a long sojourn in foreign climes . Bro . Graham , after saying he felt he had not done his duty as an officer of the lodge , owing to extraneous circumstances , congratulated the brethren on having , as a member of the lodge , such a thorough Mason as Bro . D . P . G . M ., was then announced , and received by the brethren . The D . P . G . M . acknowledged the salutation of the Iodge , and expressed his pleasure at being present . The ballot vvas then taken for Mr . Chas . Henry Bees , which proved unanimous , and he was initiated in _ a very efficient manner by the W . M ., who was ably assisted by his officers , the J . VV . giving the charge .

After "Hearty good wishes" from the visitors , the lodge was closed , and an adjournment vvas made to the banqueting room , where the brethren , to the number of 50 , sat down to a sumptuous banquet , provided by Bro . G . F . Bolton , P . M . and Hon . Steward . The toast of " The Queen and the Craft" having been

honoured , The W . M . proposed "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., " and remarked upon the immense strides Masonry had made during the 15 or t 6 years H . R . H . had presided over the Craft , the last warrant being No . 2311 . Honour vvas paid to the toast in a very enthusiastic

manner . "The Health of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " vvas received very heartily , and the W . M . in proposing the toast mentioned that the D . P . G . M . was Grand Sword Bearer at the time H . R . H . the Prince of Wales vvas installed Grand Master . The D . P . G . M ., in replying , said it was pleasant to look

back at the length of time he had been connected with Masonry . The W . M . had referred to the money grants made by the Grand Lodge , and the number of warrants issued for new lodges . The Board of Benevolence in recommending that Grand Lodge should give a distressed brother £ 50 or £ 100 , was often the means of giving him a new start in life , and the number of warrants issued gave

proof that Masonry was making itself felt in the world . The Worshipful Master then proposed " The Health of Lord Leigh , P . G . M ., " and said he was the oldest P . G . M . in England . "The Health of the D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " was then proposed by the W . M .

The D . P . G . M . ' , in responding , said there vvas an old saying that union is strength , and the popularity of Lord Leigh was due to the strength of Masonry in the Province of Warwickshire . In every lodge he had visited , the toast of the P . G . M . was always honoured , and received a flattering reception . The VV . M ., in the course of his remarks , had made some allusions to the by-laws of the

province , but they had been now so amended as to meet with general approval . Bro . G . H . Rooker , P . M ., P . G . S . B ., also responded to the toast , and stated that was his first visit to the Forward Lodge . He would take the opportunity of congratulating the W . M . on the way the work in the lodge room had been conducted , and he vvould especially refer to the manner in which the Deacons had performed their task . The charge

to the newly-initiated brother was also splendidly given by the J . VV . He strongly urged all brethren to send their votes for the elections for the Masonic Schools through the Charity Stewards of their various lodges , as non-compliance with this at the last election for the Girls' School had resulted in the Province of Yorkshire returning only two girls , when they might easily have returned three . He

also asked for more support for the Warwickshire Pupils Aid Fund , which vvas doing splendid work . Bro . Burton , P . M ., also briefly responded . Bro . W . Winfield , I . P . M ., in very felicitous terms proposed "The Health of the W . M ., " and said they had one who always did his work in a most creditable manner . The W . M ., in reply , thanked the I . P . M . for his very

flattering remarks , and the brethren for their cordial reception of the toast . It was very gratifying to have one's efforts appreciated , and it vvould be his greatest ambition to continue to give satisfaction , and to leave the chair vvith their hearty good wishes and esteem . He also expressed the hope that he should have the pleasure of meeting all of them at their next meeting after the vacation in October

next . In proposing " The Health of the Newly-Initiated Bro . C . H . Bees , " the W . M . expressed the pleasure he had had in initiating a brother who came so well recommended to the lodge . The toast was heartily received , and Bro . Bees thanked thebrethren for receiving him amongst them .

The W . M . then gave "The Health of the Visitors , " which was responded to by Bros . Robert Barber , W . M . Machen Lodge , and W . Tidmarsh , S . W . 1031 . Both complimented the W . M . and officers oh the splendid manner they had worked the Masonic ceremonies . The toast of "The Past Masters and Officers of the Forward Lodge" vvas then given by the W . M . He was

pleased to say that the Past Masters ahvays stood by the lodge , and helped it in every way they could . With reference to the officers , it was not his intention to mention any one in particular , but he should be happy to hear them all respond . However , he could assure them that he highly valued their services ; they had all done their work splendidly , and they had been complimented by the

visiting brethren . . Several of the Past Masters , the S . W ., J . W ., S . D ., and J . D . responded ; also the Secretary , who said that , although at times his work vvas difficult , it was made pleasant to him by the kindness he received at the hands

of the brethren . The Tyler ' s toast brought a very enjoyable evening to a close . The toasts were interspersed by some excellent songs rendered by the brethren , the accompaniments to same being given by Bro . T . N . Bladon , P . M ., P . P . G . Org .

M . vvith his accustomed ability , the charge being given to the candidate by Bro . Jno . Chapman in a very impressive and eloquent manner . Some matters of purely lodge interest were transacted , and Bro . Jno . Lane proceeded to e-ive his lecture " On some Ancient Masonic Obligations

and Modes of Recognition" ( Esoteric ) . In a few prefatory remarks he pointed out that being esoteric of course the subject matter , in many of its details , could not be put in writing . Commencing some 200 years back , he gave an account of the early lodges to the formation of the G . Lodge in 1717 , " the Premier Grand Lodge of the world , " proceeding in

chronological orderthrough the iSth century to the formation of the G . Lodgeof 1 S 13 ; the Sloane MS ., 1720 , No . 3329 , in the British Museum , and various workings vvere ably reviewed . He then dwelt upon the relation of the "Ancients" to the "Moderns , " and some of their distinguishing characteristics , maintaining the same views expressed by the lecturer in the various articles and letters

which have so recently appeared in the Freemason , at the same time , in his search after truth and light , any evidence which would throw fresh light on the subject would be welcome , concluding an eloquent and able lecture by finally expressing a hope that the interest of the brethren would be aroused in matters relating to Craft history , that each attempting to get , if only a little , our knowledge might be increased the more . The lecturer resumed his

seat amidst applause . The VV . M . briefly moved a vote of thanks , which was seconded by Bro . J . Chapman , and supported in a lengthy speech by Bro . W . J . Hughan , who reviewed the lecture almost from the beginning . The visiting brethren desired that Bro . Lane vvould at an early date repeat the lecture under the banner of either the sister lodge of St . John , 328 , or some other lodge in the neighbourhood .

and that lodge in particular , by Bro . Craig , P . M ., and Bro . Dalrymple , P . M . ; and , on behalf of the Iodge , he now had great pleasure in asking them to accept , as a small token of their esteem , each a P . M . ' s jewel , vvith a suitable inscription . Bros . Craig and Dalrymple replied , and briefly expressed the pleasure it gave them to be the recipients of such

handsome jewels , and further assured the brethren that the presentation would only be an incentive to work for the lodge , and make it to be respected , not only in the Province of Cumberland and Westmorland , but in every land where her sons had migrated to . With "Hearty good wishes" from Lodges 119 , 872 , 1002 , 1267 , 1 4 00 , and 1989 , the lodge vvas closed .
