Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

Bro . Wheeler , Organist . The W . Master said his first pleasing duty vvas to present the I . P . M ., on behalf of the members , with a token of their respect and regard , and in recognition of the able manner in which he had carried out his duties . It was well known that Bro . VV . A . Scurrah , I . P . M ., worked hard to obtain the warrant for the lodge , and had used every endeavour for its welfare .

Those efforts had been crowned with success , for they had been a most successful lodge , and second to none granted under the English Constitution . The jewel presented to the I . P . M . was well deserved and well earned , and the members hoped he would consider it as the highest honour with which they could repay him for his services . Bro . W . A . Scurrah , I . P . M ., thanked the brethren very heartily for this mark of their favour . It vvas true there had been

much work , but it had been a pleasure to him to assist in the formation of this lodge . He felt gratified to stand there that day to look round and see many whom he had initiated and whom he knew would be bright ornaments in Masonry . It was a good thing to be able to say that vvith so many initiates all had fulfilled their expectations . He sincerely thanked them for their gift , vvhich he should wear

with pleasure and esteem more than the others he had received . Although he had passed the chair , he should continue to take an active interest in the lodge , and should be ready at all times to assist the members both in and out of Masonry . They vvere aware that the work of a lodge in its first year vvas very great , and also that during that period it contained no Past Masters . It was the usual

custom at the formation of a lodge to select some distinguished brother to act as a P . M . Fortunately for himself and the lodge , they had a distingushed brother amongst them vvho kindly consented to act as I . P . M . That brother was Bro . W . M . Stiles , P . M ., to whom a jewel vvas voted at the last meeting of the lodge , in recognition of his valuable services as the acting I . P . M . It

therefore afforded him ( the I . P . M . ) considerable gratification to be the means of presenting Bro . Stiles , P . M ., on behalf of the Iodge , with this mark of their respect , lt was their unanimous wish that Bro . Stiles would be spared for many years to wear the jewel , which they trusted would remind him of the first year of the lodge , and of the many true friends who would miss him whenever he vvas

absent . Bro . W . M . Stiles , P . M ., said he was deeply sensible of the kindness he had received in consequence of any little services he had rendered . It had been a labour of love to assist in making the lodge a success . It afforded him great pleasure to render any small services to his friend and brother Scurrah , and the Hendon Lodge . He thanked that brother for his kind remarks , and the

brethren for the hearty manner in which the jewel had been voted . The Secretary having announced the receipt of letters of regret for non-attendance from several Grand Officers and brethren , the lodge vvas closed . After a recherche repast , the usual toasts were received in a hearty manner . Bro . lames Terry , P . G . S . B ., responded for "The

Grand Officers , " vvhich , he remarked , was a comprehensive toast . In speaking of the Earl of Carnarvon , they had only to read the papers during the past few months to notice the grand reception he had met with in the Colonies as their Pro G . Master , and his visit had also been the means of inaugurating a new Colonial Grand Lodge . The Earl of Lathom , presiding as he did as Prov . G . M . of West Lanes .,

and as Deputy G . M ., vvas also prepared to attend to preside over Grand Lodge , and a more meritorious and distinguished brotherit vvould be impossible to know . As to the other Grand Officers , they must have done something to have caught the eye of the M . W . G . M . He hoped it would be that some at that table would have the honourof ranking as Grand Officers , which was an honour all strived to attain .

Bro . Scurrah , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the Worshipful Master , " and said the brethren present were already aware of the steady manner in vvhich Bro . Thom , W . M ., had worked his way in Masonry . Their W . M . had given much time and attention to learn the ritual thoroughly and perfectly , and would render the ceremonies in a masterly manner . Not only that , but Bro . Thom vvas also one

of the most genial brethren they could meet , and was at all times ready to greet a brother with the right hand of fellowship , and willing to impart that knowledge which he possessed to assist others in Masonry . As there vvere many toasts before them he vvould not occupy their time by further expatiating upon the excellences of the W . M . There were 12 months before them to prove his qualities ,

and at the end of that time they vvould all say he vvas a right good fellow , a thoroughly good worker of the ritual , and necessaily a good W : M . Bro . James Thom , W . M ., after thanking the I . P . M . and brethren for the proposition and reception of the toast , said he could hardly realise the position in which they had placed him . He knew the importance cf the duties of the

chair , and should endeavour to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor to carry on those duties vvith credit to himself and satisfaction to the members . He was aware it would be a difficult task to follow in Bro . Scurrah ' s footsteps , but he should put his nose to the grindstone and do his best . He did not say he should have as many initiates , and certainly would not like to have more , * as he should

then be eclipsing their first W . M . He had only been a Mason five-and-a-half years , and the honour conferred upon him last year in being invested as the first S . W . heshould never forget . That evening he had attained the summit of a Freemason ' s profession . He now stood in the high position of W . M . of the lodge . Those brethren in different lodges who occupied io or is years in working up to the

chair were hard-working Freemasons . He was not a hard worker in that lodge , for it vvas his luck to be appointed the first S . W . They had heard of men of business who turned into money everything their hands touched . Everything he had touched in that lodge had been to advantage . The M . W . G . M . had not granted a warrant to any lodge which had been more successful than theirs . He had visited and

had seen the success of many lodges , but during the 12 months of the establishment of that lodge they had done wonders . He promised them in the future to do the best he could , and the best could do no more . The Worshipful Master then gave "The Installing and I . P . Master . " Referring to Bro . Scurrah in his capacity as

Installing Master , he said he vvas convinced that the brethren present in the Iodge when that ceremony vvas rendered had never heard it performed in a more able or efficient manner . Few members were gifted with the elocutionary power possessed by Bro . Scurrah , who had excelled himself that evening . This was not the only lodge in vvhich Bro . Scurrah held the position of I . P . M ., andjhat brother

vvould , he vvas sure , render him all the assistance he required . Bro . W . A . Scurrah , P . P . G . S . of W . Middx ., I . P . M ., having returned thanks , said , vvith regard to the installation ceremony , that it was the crowning work of every W . Master to install his successor to the best of his ability . If his efforts that evening had met vvith their approbation he

was satisfied . When he looked back upon the past he saw the Hendon Lodge in embryo , and then after some troubles the warrant was granted , and the consecration took place , and vvas performed by a brother whom they all knew and highly esteemed—Bro . James Terry—vvho rendered the ceremony in a manner vvhich gave great pleasure to all . They then saw the lodge steadily progress , four

brethren being initiated at the first regular meeting , and another four at the following one . 1 'here were 10 founders , but at the present time they numbered 30 members . Those whom he had initiated vvere good and true men , vvho vvould be bright ornaments of Freemasonry . Their first year had also been associated with the Charities . By their kindness he had been enabled to go up as Steward for the

Benevolent Institution with 100 guineas . He expected even greater things in the future of their lodge , and during the coming year expected to see true and good men initiated . Their lodge met in a district containing a large number of inhabitants—about 11 , 000—and vvas the only one in that neighbourhood . He said vvith sincerity that their lodge might become a good thing and a blessing to the district .

He vvould take credit for the founders that they had endeavoured to do some good in their day and generation , and the day vvould come when it vvould be proved to the satistion ot all . He thanked the brethren for the kind reception accorded him , and vvould do all in his power to make the lodge a more thorough success . He hoped they vvould continue to be bound in the bonds of fraternal affection for

many years to come . Bro . Levander , P . P . G . D . Middx ., in replying for "The Visitors , " said he esteemed it an honour to be deputed to respond for the toast . He expressed the gratification it had afforded him to be present and to witness the progress made by the lodge . He returned thanks for the cordial reception accorded him , and also thanked Bro . Stiles for

giving him the opportunity of witnessing the excellent working and participating in the admirable banquet . Bros . Edmonds , W . M . 1507 , and H . Stiles , P . M . 1507 , also replied . "The Masonic Charities" vvas then proposed by the W . M ., who expressed his pleasure at seeing Bro . Terry amongst them . The I . P . M . had had the honour of

representing the Charity with which Bro . Terry vvas connected . He should make it his privilege and honour to represent the R . M . I , for Boys at the next Festival , and expected to receive the full support of the lodge . Bro . Jas . Terry , Sec . R . M . Benevolent Institution , in reply , said a bold boast vvas made by the W . M ., vvhich , however , vvas well fulfilled by the noble work done by the

lodge on behalf of one of the Masonic Institutions . There were a few lodges existing for a period of 20 years that had not done so much for the Charities as that young lodge . The W . M . had told them he intended representing the Boys' School , and he wished the Secretary of that Institution could have been present to know of that intention . After the , £ 50 , 600 raised for the Girls' School , that

Institution could afford to wait , and allow them a similar opportunity for the Boys' School and Benevolent Institution . He hoped a total vvould be raised for the Boys by that lodge which would evince their sympathy for that Institution—vvhich had passed through a severe ordeal . A Committee had been formed to investigate the affairs of the Boys' Institution , and there was a certain feeling of

confidence in the names of those associated together for that purpose . There vvas Bro . Derby Allcroft , the Treasurer of one of the largest Institutions in the City of London—Christ's Hospital j Bro . Sir Reginald Hanson , the late Lord Mayor j and the leader of the parliamentary bar , Bro . Samuel Pope , Q . C . From the names of these three they would have confidence in the success and impartiality

of the enquiry . With respect to the Provinces , West Yorkshire , Somersetshire , and Lancashire vvere represented . He had no doubt but that they vvould be so satisfied with the enquiry that if they meant to give 100 guineas they vvould double their subscriptions . He thanked the I . P . M . for taking the position of a Steward for the Benevolent Institution at such short notice . On behalf of his

absent colleague he thanked them most sincerely , and hoped they vvould double their amounts in order that the Boys ' School might reap some substantial good from the success of their lodge . "The Treasurer and Secretary" and "The Officers '

being given , the Tyler ' s toast closed a successful meeting . A meed of praise is due , and should be recorded , to Bro . Wheeler , Org ., for the excellent programme of music provided , which vvas admirably carried through under his direction , assisted by Bros . Hudson , F . VV . Hearn , Lawrance , Dobbs , Stansall , Parsons , and others .

then raised to the Sublime Degree of a M . M . The ballot was then taken for Mr . A . A . Itter , and vvas declared favourable , he vvas then initiated into the mysteries of Freemasonry , this and the previous ceremony being performed by the W . M . in a most impressive manner . The ballot vvas then taken for VV . M . for the ensuing year , when the choice fell upon Bro . Hy . Holmes , S . VV ., vvho thanked the brethren for the honour he had received in a

pithy speech . Bro . N . Goodchild vvas again elected Treasurer , as was also Bro . C . Shepherd , Tyler . The installation meeting takes place in March next . There being no further business , the lodge adjourned to the social board . The usual Masonic toasts were given , and ' * The Health of the Initiate , " vvho suitably responded , and "Visitors , " were heartily given .
