WEST LANCASHIRE MASONIC EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION . —At a meeting of the General Committee of the above Institution on Friday evening , the 7 th inst ., in the Masonic Temple , Hope-street , Bro . J . Houlding , Past Prov . G . Reg ., presiding , it vvas decided to place eight children on the Educational Fund .

The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Worcestershire will take place on Wednesday next , at Moseley , under the auspices of the Masefield Lodge , No . 2034 , the Prov . Grand Master , Sir Edmund Lechmere , Bart ., M . P ., presiding . Previous to the commencement of the proceedings , two embroidered standards for the use of Provincial Grand Lodge vvill be presented by Lady Lechmere , who will attend and make the

presenta-* tion . At the conclusion of the business the brethren will attend Divine service in Moseley parish church , where a sermon will be preached by Bro . the Rev . J . Knight Law , B . A ., Prov . Grand Chaplain , and a collection vvill be made for charitable purposes . On Monday , the Shrewsbury Town Council unanimously resolved to petition the Council of the National Rifle Association to select Cannock Chase for the annual meetings of their association .

Bro . Henry Irving and the Lyceum Company commenced a series of performances , on Monday , at the Theatre Royal , Glasgow , vvhich vvas opened under the management of Messrs . Howard and Wyndham . "Faust" was _ chosen for the occasion , and Bro . Irving was enthusiastically received by the audience . Bro . Sir E . B . Malet , H . M . ' s Ambassador at

Berlin , recently returned to his post , but the Lady Ermyntrude Malet did not sccompany him , and will remain for a short time at her residence in Eaton-square . During his visit to Scotland , the Duke of Cambridge will be the guest of Bro . the Marquis and Marchioness of Breadalbane at Taymouth Castle , where his Royal Highness will enjoy a few days' shooting .

What is known as the E gyptian Hall at Freemasons' Hall , Philadelphia , has been for some time undergoing the process of decoration , the artist whose services have been engaged to carry out the work being Bro . Geo . Herzog , of Lodge No . 51 , G . Lodge of Pennsylvania . It is expected that Bro . Herzog will have completed his work in about two months' time , and that " Egyptian Hall will then be a hall of great beauty . "

A fire broke out in the Pavilion wing of the Star and Garter Hotel , Richmond , about 10 p . m . on Saturday last , and before the flames were got under , the vvhole of the annexe was burnt out . The ground floor of this building is used as a ball and concert room , the rooms above being used as coffee rooms , and those below as kitchens ; but the main portion of the hotel is still intact , and vve are glad to hear that Bro . A . Mella , the manager , is able to carry on business as usual .

The 71 st Annual Convocation of the Grand Chapter of Vermont vvas held in Burlington , on the 15 th Tune last , under the presidency of Comp . Marsh O . Perkins , M . E . Grand High Priest , 23 of the chapters being represented . The statistical and financial reports show that the number of

chapters on the toll is 25 and the aggregate membership 2205 . The receipts for the year were 8 SS dollars , and the disbursements 497 dollars , the total of the General Fund being 238 9 dollars . Sir Albert Woods ( Garter ) Princi pal King of Arms , visited Windsor Castle on Friday , the 7 th inst ? , for the purpose of rearranging the banner and devices of the Knights of the Garter , in St . George ' s Chapel . The

insignia of the late Emperors William and Frederick of Germany and the Duke of Rutland were removed , and those of the Emperor William II . of Germany were transferred from the Princes' to the Sovereigns' side of the Chapel , while the banner and insignia of the Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary were placed on the Princes' side . Those of the Marquis of Londonderry have still to be placed in the Chapel .

political meeting at Bradford , Yorkshire , on the 7 th inst ., and addressed those present on the subject of Ireland . Bro . Lord Stanley of Preston , Governor-General of Canada , opened the Exhibition at Toronto , on Tuesday , in the presence of a vast concourse of people , amid great manifestations of enthusiasm . The streets were gaily decorated for the occasion , and his lordship vvas most

cordially received everywhere . On Tuesday , the Newbury Town Council met and considered the claims of the Berkshire site to become the new Wimbledon , and it was unanimously resolved to memorialise the directors of the Great Western Railway Company to grant the cheap special fares asked for by the Council of the National Rifle Association .

There will be a grand temperance demonstration in the grounds of the Irish Exhibition at Olympia on Monday , the 24 th inst ., when a number of prominent public men vvill attend and address the gathering , vvhich vvill be held under the auspices of the Phoenix Order . The several contingents will assemble in Hyde Park , near Knightsbridge Barracks , at 1 p . m . on the day named , and thence march in procession , with bands and oanners , & c , to Olympia .

The Festival of the Three Choirs , which is held this year at Hereford , vvas opened on Tuesday vvith service in the Cathedral , the members of the choir assisting , and the sermon being preached by Bro . the Rev . Sir F . Gore Ouseley , Bart ., P . G . O ., Canon Residentiary , Professor of Music at the University of Oxford , and composer of one of the works included in the programme , ln the afternoon there vvas a performance of Mendelssohn ' s " Elijah , " the audience

being numerous , but not crowded . In the evening , in the Shire Hall , the "Golden Legend" vvas performed , the author—Bro . Sir Arthur Sullivan , Past Grand Organisthaving arrived specially from London an hour or two before to act as conductor , and Madame Albani being the principal soloist , and being most enthusiastically applauded . The weather vvas most favourable , and in striking contrast vvith vvhat it had been at the Birmingham Festival a fortnight

since . We learn from a paragraph in the Masonic Advocate of Indianapolis , vvhich derives its information from a report by Sir Knight I . Berry , G . Recorder of Maine , that the number of Knights Templar at present in the

United States is 75 , 313 , being an increase during the past year of 2919 . The number throughout the world is 80 , 910 . New York and Pennsylvania head the roll with 7994 and 7968 subscribing sir knights respectively , Massachusetts and Rhode Island being third with 7217 , Illinois next vvith 6939 , and Ohio fifth vvith 5643 .

The Admiralty have issued orders for the training squadron to proceed on a short cruise in the North Sea and Baltic , and the Rover and Calypso vvill leave Sheerness to-day ( Friday ) , in order to join the Volage and Active in the Downs . lt is expected that at the termination of the cruise the Rover and Calypso vvill be paid out of commission , and be replaced by the new fast cruisers the Mersey and Arethusa .

The Queen has approved of the appointment of Sir Guy Campbell , Bart ., vvho served in the Afghan campaign of 187 S-9 as adjutant of the 2 nd City of London Rifle Volunteers , of which Bro . Sir Frederick Roberts , Bart ., V . C , G . C . B ., is the honorary colonel . According to the annual report , just issued , of the Registrar-General for Ireland , the population last year vvas 4 , 837 , 313 , as compared vvith 4 , 889 , 498 the year

preceding . There was a slight increase in the number of marriages—20 , 945 , as against 20 , 594 in 1 SS 6 , and in the deaths —88 , 585 , as against 87 , 292 , while the births vvere fewer—112 , 400 to 113 , 927 . The number of emigrants is given as 82 , 293 , as compared vvith 63 , 135 in the previous year . At the dinner party given on Tuesday at the Imperial Palace at Vienna , both the Emperor Francis Joseph and the Prince of VVales wore Russian uniforms , the banquet being in honour of the Czar ' s nameday .

The marriage of the Duke ot Aosta , brother of the King of Italy , and the Princess La ; titia Buonaparte vvas solemnised at Turin on Tuesday . The civil ceremony took place in the grand hall of the palace in the presence of the Princes of the houses of Savoy , Braganza , and Buonaparte , Generals Menabrea and Delia Rocca , . Ihe Grand Commandery of Dakota held its fifth annual conclave at Aberdeen on the 29 th and 30 th May last , eight subordinate commanderies being represented out of the 11 on the roll . We have been earnestl y requested to give as much publicity as possible to the terrible losses experienced by the inhabitants of the German towns Marktiissa and Beerberg , through the inundations in August , and to appeal

on their behalf to our readers to contribute towards the fund now being raised for their relief . The circumstances are most distressing , the little town of Marktiissa alone having sustained loss and damage to the extent of 393 , marks—about £ 19 , 600 . Prince Albert Victor of Wales , after having passed some ten days at Danby Lodge , Grosmont , as the guest of iViscount and Viscountess Dovvne , returned to York at the end of last week and re-joined his regiment ( the ioth Hussars ) . On Friday , the 7 th instant , the Duke of

Cambridge , accompanied by Bro . General Lord Wolesley , Adjutant-General of the Forces , officially inspected the fortifications erected at Sheerness for the defence of the Thames and Medway . The party afterwards witnessed some experiments with the new Cm . breechloading guns on No . 1 Bastion and then returned to Town .

The Grand Secretary General of the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Rite for the Northern Jurisdiction of the United States has notified that the session—vvhich is known as the triennial session—will be held at Boston on Tuesday , the 18 th inst ., when the officers for the next three years vvill be elected . The headquarters vvill be at the Hotel Brunswick .

On Wednesday a meeting of Volunteer colonels and other officers , including the Marquis of Ailsa , was held for the purpose of considering the steps to be taken for the defence of the Clyde . A report was adopted , and it vvas resolved to send a copy of it to the Duke of Cambridge prior to his visit to the Clyde defences , to-morrow ( Saturday ) .

The Brisbane Gazette of the 12 th instant contains a proclamation , signed by Dr . W . Macgregor , Administrator of British New Guinea , formally declaring the sovereignty of Queen Victoria over the British portion of the island .

The "Diamond Wedding" of the Duke and Duchess Maximilian of Bavaria , whose daughter Elizabeth is Empress Queen of Austria-Hungary , vvas celebrated at Tezernsee and Munich on the Sth instant , but , owing to the advanced age of their Royal Highnesses , the proceedings were quiet and undemonstrative .

The Directors of the Bank of England met on Thursday , and raised the rate of Discount from 3 to 4 P cent . The meeting of the British Association at Bath was brought to a conclusion on Wednesday . There has been marued activity in all the sections , and several

interesting and important papers vvere read during the progress of the meeting . Several grants vvere made for scientific purposes by the General Committee , and a cordial vote of thanks was passed to the Mayor and Corporation for their kind and hospitable reception of the Association .
