, of installation by Bro . S . Howard , P . M ., and Bro . W . H . Thornton , P . M ., D . C , the ceremony being very impressively performed by Bro . G . Broadbent , the retiring Master , and Bro . M ., Charity Representative . At the close of business a valuable jewel was presented to Bro . George Broadbent , in token of the esteem in which he was held by the brethren .

A musical programme was given by Bros . F . W . Herbert . E . A . Davies , Tames Strettle , George Proudman , R . W . Pierpoint , W . H . Cook , E . Beeson , and 1 . Jack . The jewel was made in 18-carat gold , the square and problem being suspended from an imperial crown studded with rubies and emeralds , and in thecentre a large diamond . It was designed and manufactured by Bro . George Kenning .

Eldon Lodge ( No . 17 SS ) — A meeting of this lodge was held at the Royal Hotel , on Saturday , the 8 th instant , when there was a large gathering of brethren and visitors to witness the installation of Bro . Rice , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., tbe ceremony being most ably performed by the D . P . G . M .. Bro . R . C . Else , P . G . D . of England . The

the last meeting were read and confirmed . The ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Winsborrow being the candidate . The lodge was opened in the Second and Third Degrees . The ceremony of raising was rehearsed . Bro . Murray , who had previously answered the usual questions and been entrusted , was the candidate . The lodge was resumed to the First Degree . The W . M . rose frr the first

Cornford personating the candidate . Comp . Wm . Vincent , P . Z . and S . E . 1339 , was elected a joining member . Comp . Cope was elected M . E . Z . for the hext meeting . Very deep sympathy was expressed with Comp .

Lodges And Chapters Of Instruction.

H . J . Martin , P . Z . 1622 , in his serious illness , and the S . E . was instructed to write him with the earnest desire for his speedy recovery . The chapter was then closed . The convocations will meet weekly at the above address at S p . m . on Fridays , under the able Preceptorship of Comp . F . Hilton , A . G . D . C , when all who desire assistance in the beautiful ritual will be heartily welcomed .

Presentation To A Railway Official.

PRESENTATION TO A RAILWAY OFFICIAL .

There was a pleasant gathering of railway advertisement managers , representatives of seaside resorts , and others whose interests are identical , at the Holborn Restaurant , London , on Thursday , the 6 th inst ., to do honour to Mr . William H . Hills , who . for many years held the position of chief of the advertising department of the

Great Northern Railway Company . A complimentary dinner was given by Mr . Hills' railway and other friends , and he was presented with a very handsome gold hunter and chain and a beautiful bracelet for Mrs . Hills . Mr . J . Burton , presided , and the arrangements were admir . ably carried out by Mr . Ernest W . Standford , advertisement superintendent of Euston , as Secretary , and Mr .

Fred . Lear , as Hon . Treasurer . The toast of " The Advertising Contractors , " was proposed by Mr . W . C . SIMPSON , and responded to by Messrs . H . BUKTON and C . N ODEN . Mr . Noden , who was a railwayman for 22 years , is now the advertisement contractor for the corporation of Blackpool . During the evening he gave an amusing song ,

composed specially for the occasion in the Lancashire dialect . Other toast were given and responded to by Messrs . WALTER HILL , E ; BARKER , J . RICHARDS , E . DAVEY , junr ., and C . PASCALL , who spoke highly of the success and courtesy of the Secretary and Treasurer named . Mr . FRED . HORNER also addressed the gathering , and

high compliments were paid to Mr . P . C . Walker , who is succeeding Mr . Hills as Great Northern advertisement department manager . The doyen of the company present was Mr . T . Alcock , late of the Great Eastern Railway Company . Songs and recitations of the best kind were given in a remarkably clever style by Messrs , T . S . Smith ,

Will . Edwards , Fred . Chamberlain , and Will . Ballard , The vice-chairmen were Messrs . W . C . Simpson , and H , B . Burton . The committee consisted of Messrs . J . Rose , Walter Hill , E . Davey , junr ., G . Davey , W , Brunton , and W . A . Fleming . Mr . Hills made a happy little speech on accepting the presentation .

BRO . THOMAS CHIRGWIN . Bro . Thomas Chirgwin was initiated in the Fortitude Lodge , No . 131 , Truro , and was the Master in 1861 and 1862 ; was the senior P . M . for many years , and is now followed in that respect by Bro . W . J . Johns , the second oldest being Bro . S Holloway , and the third in seniority Bro . W . J . Hughan . He was long the

esteemed Treasurer of the lodge , and , until recent years , installed the Masters annually , as well as frequently worked the ceremonies in an impressive manner , ln the Provincial Grand Lodge he took a very active part under three Provincial Grand Masters , the late Bro . Sir Charles Lemon , Bart ., Bro . Augustus Smith , and the present beloved Ruler , the Earl of

Mount Edgcumbe ( D . G . M . of England ) , Prov . G . M . from 1873 . After having served in some minor offices , he was appointed J . G . W . by Bro . Augustus Smith , and S . G . W . by the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe ; becoming the Provincial Grand Secretary in 1887 , in which office he did splendid service down , to the day of his decease , having been the right hand , "

practically , of the Prov . Grand Master for many years . He-was one of the founders of the Cornwall Masonic Annuity and Benevolent Fund in 1864 , and has been its efficient Honorary Secretary from then to the day of his decease , some £ 10 , 000 having passed through his hands during that long period , over half that amount being still invested , and immense good has been

done locally by means of this excellent Institution , as respects , grants , annuities , and educational gifts . Comp . Chirgwin was a P . Z . of the Cornubian Royal Arch Chapter ,- No . 331 , Truro ; one of the founders , with Bro . Hughan ( the first W . M . ) , of the Fortitude Mark Lodge , No . 78 , in 1865 , and was the first S . W . succeeding as W . M . in 1867 . His support in

establishing the Mark in Cornwall was so thorough and hearty that he was soon promoted to the highest honour the Prov . Grand Master could bestow , being Dep . Prov . Grand Master from 18 79 to his decease . His presence and advice will be much missed by Sir Charles B . G . Sawle , Bart ., the respected Prov . Grand Master . Bro . Chirgwin was also a Knight Templar and Rose

Croix Mason , but his chief Masonic work was done in connection with Craft and Mark Masonry and the Benevolent Fund of the province , and he was a life governor of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . The funeral took place on Friday , at the St . Mary's Burial Ground , Truro , and was attended by a large number of the leading professional and commercial

inhabitants from different parts of the county . The Masonic body was represented by the R . W . the Pt 0 ^ j Grand Master , the Earl ( A Mount Edgcumbe , as well as by the members of the Fortitude Lorlge , No . 131 , ?' which deceased was the senior Past Master ; the Phcenix Lodge , No . 331 , and brethren from all parts of the county .

PRESENTATION TO A RAILWAY OFFICIAL .

There was a pleasant gathering of railway advertisement managers , representatives of seaside resorts , and others whose interests are identical , at the Holborn Restaurant , London , on Thursday , the 6 th inst ., to do honour to Mr . William H . Hills , who . for many years held the position of chief of the advertising department of the

Great Northern Railway Company . A complimentary dinner was given by Mr . Hills' railway and other friends , and he was presented with a very handsome gold hunter and chain and a beautiful bracelet for Mrs . Hills . Mr . J . Burton , presided , and the arrangements were admir . ably carried out by Mr . Ernest W . Standford , advertisement superintendent of Euston , as Secretary , and Mr .

Fred . Lear , as Hon . Treasurer . The toast of " The Advertising Contractors , " was proposed by Mr . W . C . SIMPSON , and responded to by Messrs . H . BUKTON and C . N ODEN . Mr . Noden , who was a railwayman for 22 years , is now the advertisement contractor for the corporation of Blackpool . During the evening he gave an amusing song ,

composed specially for the occasion in the Lancashire dialect . Other toast were given and responded to by Messrs . WALTER HILL , E ; BARKER , J . RICHARDS , E . DAVEY , junr ., and C . PASCALL , who spoke highly of the success and courtesy of the Secretary and Treasurer named . Mr . FRED . HORNER also addressed the gathering , and

high compliments were paid to Mr . P . C . Walker , who is succeeding Mr . Hills as Great Northern advertisement department manager . The doyen of the company present was Mr . T . Alcock , late of the Great Eastern Railway Company . Songs and recitations of the best kind were given in a remarkably clever style by Messrs , T . S . Smith ,

BRO . THOMAS CHIRGWIN . Bro . Thomas Chirgwin was initiated in the Fortitude Lodge , No . 131 , Truro , and was the Master in 1861 and 1862 ; was the senior P . M . for many years , and is now followed in that respect by Bro . W . J . Johns , the second oldest being Bro . S Holloway , and the third in seniority Bro . W . J . Hughan . He was long the

esteemed Treasurer of the lodge , and , until recent years , installed the Masters annually , as well as frequently worked the ceremonies in an impressive manner , ln the Provincial Grand Lodge he took a very active part under three Provincial Grand Masters , the late Bro . Sir Charles Lemon , Bart ., Bro . Augustus Smith , and the present beloved Ruler , the Earl of

Mount Edgcumbe ( D . G . M . of England ) , Prov . G . M . from 1873 . After having served in some minor offices , he was appointed J . G . W . by Bro . Augustus Smith , and S . G . W . by the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe ; becoming the Provincial Grand Secretary in 1887 , in which office he did splendid service down , to the day of his decease , having been the right hand , "

practically , of the Prov . Grand Master for many years . He-was one of the founders of the Cornwall Masonic Annuity and Benevolent Fund in 1864 , and has been its efficient Honorary Secretary from then to the day of his decease , some £ 10 , 000 having passed through his hands during that long period , over half that amount being still invested , and immense good has been

done locally by means of this excellent Institution , as respects , grants , annuities , and educational gifts . Comp . Chirgwin was a P . Z . of the Cornubian Royal Arch Chapter ,- No . 331 , Truro ; one of the founders , with Bro . Hughan ( the first W . M . ) , of the Fortitude Mark Lodge , No . 78 , in 1865 , and was the first S . W . succeeding as W . M . in 1867 . His support in

establishing the Mark in Cornwall was so thorough and hearty that he was soon promoted to the highest honour the Prov . Grand Master could bestow , being Dep . Prov . Grand Master from 18 79 to his decease . His presence and advice will be much missed by Sir Charles B . G . Sawle , Bart ., the respected Prov . Grand Master . Bro . Chirgwin was also a Knight Templar and Rose

Croix Mason , but his chief Masonic work was done in connection with Craft and Mark Masonry and the Benevolent Fund of the province , and he was a life governor of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . The funeral took place on Friday , at the St . Mary's Burial Ground , Truro , and was attended by a large number of the leading professional and commercial

inhabitants from different parts of the county . The Masonic body was represented by the R . W . the Pt 0 ^ j Grand Master , the Earl ( A Mount Edgcumbe , as well as by the members of the Fortitude Lorlge , No . 131 , ?' which deceased was the senior Past Master ; the Phcenix Lodge , No . 331 , and brethren from all parts of the county .
