SOUTH AFRICA . We have been favoured with the following address which was spoken by V / . W . " . Amphlett , Wednesday , 13 th June , 1900 , on behalf of Bro . . C . F . Silberbauer , the Orator , who was absent . My brethren , our worthy Tyler , Bro . A . J . Roux , has entrusted me with a pleasing , yet difficult task ; pleasing , because I deem it an honour to have been specially asked by so old a member of the Fraternity to say to you on his behalf that

which he declares his feelings will not permit him to do himself in words however few and simple ; and dillicult , because you will readily appreciate the delicate position of anyone who attempts to voice the sentiments of another . Bro . Roux desires me to state that , at the close of his long term of service as Tyler ( upwards of 30 years ) , he begs the Lodge De Goede Hoop to accept three chairs , for the W . M ., tbe S . W ., and J . W ., respectively . These he offers as a taint

outward and visible token of his deep sense of gratitude to the members who , though ollicially his employers , have in every respect treited him as their brother by rejoicing with him when he rejoiced and ( which is far more important ) extending to him their heartfelt sympathy whenever T . G . A . O . T . U . saw fit to cause him to drain the bitter cup of affliction . He also thanks the brethren for

their patience with him , when , as—by reason of advancing years—the pillar of his strength was declining to the ground , his ability to cope with his arduous duties could no longer keep pace with his zeal for faithful service . He also intends these handsome and valuable gift * to be a memorial of himself ; nor , methinks , is this at all blameworthy . I recollect seeing a photogr .-iph of the

" As the poet sings : For who—to dumb forgetfulness a prey—This pleasing , anxious being e'er resigned , Left the warm precincts of tho cheerful day ,

Nor cast one longing , lingering look behind ? He feels that in his profane life Freemasonry has , by God ' s blessing , been with him a powerful influence for good ; and that the ceremonials in which he has for so long a period taken a not unprominent part , have given additional force to the teachings of his religion with respect to self-knowledge , to life , death , and immortality , and caused him to say in all humility , yet truthfully , " I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God , than to dwell in the tents of sin . " In terminating his connection with the lodge as its Tyler , he trusts ( in the words of a

revered judge when he bade the Supreme Court a public farewell ) that in his retirement he may do nought to derogate from the high standard which he had been taught to set before him , Bro , Roux promises to come amongst us in his private capacity as often as his health will admit , and asks you all to pray that at the last he may be found worthy to join that band of faithful brethren who , in the Grand Lodge Above , enjoy for evermore the presence of Him in Whose Omnific Name we begin and end all Masonic labours in this our earthly home . THK STORV which has been circulated in Paris that M . According to the idea of the anti-Masonic party in Paris—ind hatred of Freemasonry is playing a far larger part in French politics to-day than most Englishmen imagine—the appointment of a French general would have had the approval of Russia and even of Germany if" Le Fti-re . .
