The Masonic Home for the Sick and Aged was dedicated at Utica , U . S . A ., on the 6 th inst ., with imposing ceremonies . Twenty-five thousand members " of the Order attended the exercises celebrating the completion of a work begun 40 years ago .
At the regular meeting of the Newall Lodge , No . 1134 , at Adelphi House , Salford , on Tuesday last , Bro . E . Webb , S . W ., was unanimously elected the W . M . for the ensuing year , and Bro . John Holroyd , P . P . S . G . W ., was elected Treasurer .
The Duke of Edinburgh quitted Devonport on leave of absence , on Wednesday , and arrived at Clarence House in the evening . After a brief stay in town , his Royal Highness will proceed to join the Duchess on the Continent . Prince and Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein are at present on a visit to the Prince and Princess Anhalt , at Worlitz , near Dessan , and are expected to return to Cumberland Lodge some time in the course of next week .
The King of Italy has written to his Prime Minister with reference to the proposed gift in commemoration of his silver wedding , to siv that he and the Queen have resolved on declining any such presentation , but that they will be delighted if the money is used in acts of benevolence and charity .
The 17 th Lancers has been ordered to provide the usual escort for the incoming Lord Mavor ( Alderman Knill ) on his lord hip ' s induction into office on the 9 th November . The cattle exhibits , though fewer in number than in 1 S 90 , numbered 215 , and included representatives of the Shorthorn , Jersey , Guernsey , and other breeds . I here was also
a very notable display of dairy produce , of utensils for converting ' milk into butter and cheese , and of vessels for conveying milk from the farm to the retailer . Among the exhibitors were Bros , the Earl of Fgmont and the Earl of Radnor , and the Baroness Burdett-Coutts and the Lady Mayoress will distribute the prizes in the butter-making contests this ( Friday ) afternoon .
I he China Cup which was won this year at Bisley by a team of the London Rille Brigade , was ( conveyed with due pomp and ceremony to the Guildhall on Saturday and handed over to the custody of the Lord Mayor , Bro . Sir David Evans . The trophy was mounted on a gun carriage and escorted by detachmentsof the London Rille Brigade , the City of London Engineers , the City of London Artillery , and

Her Majesty's ironclad Victoria , flagship of Admiral Sir George Tryon , commanding-in-chief the British Mediterranean Squadron , left Malta on Monday for Nauplia and
Pirreus , accompanied by the Nile , Sans Pareil , Dreadnought , Camperdown , and Surprise . The Grand Duke of Hesse and his sister , Princess Alice , arrived at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday morning , after visiting the Queen at Balmoral . In the evening they visited Olympia , and on Thursday they left London for Ostend on their return home .

A meeting was held at ( Manchester on Monday for the purpose of further promoting the establishment of a College of Music for that city . college . The Secretary reported promises of £ 998 a year for five years , and donations to the incidental fund amount infer to £ 901 . of the sum required—about £ 20 , 000—to provide 5 s . a week to every widow as long as she remains unmarried , and 2 s . Gd . a week to every child up to the age of 13 . The German officers who took part in the long distance ride from Berlin to Vienna were entertained at dinner in the Sacher Gardens in the Prates by their Austrian comrades-in-arms on Tuesday evening . The general commanding the Vienna garrison occupied the chair , and the number ot guests was 160 . The proceedings throughout were of the most enthusiastic character .
At a meeting on Thursday in connection with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution it was announced that amongst the contributions recently received were £ 700 from members of the Hearts of Oak Benefit Society , tor the purpose of buildingand equippinga lifeboat , to be named the " Hearts of Oak . Hundreds of people visited the grave of Tennyson in the Abbey , on Thursday , which has now been fitted up and railed off to protect the many wreaths and emblems which lie around it . The living of St . Michael and All Angels , Portsmouth , is placed at the disposal of the Bishop of Winchester by the demise of the Pev . N . Shutte , who was found dead in his study . Mr . Shutte , who was upwards of sixty years of age , started the fund for the erection of a church , which was built on a site given by the War Department , and of which the foundation-stone was laid by the Duke of Cambridge .
Up to the present time the Lord Mayor ' s Fund at the Mansion House for the relief of the sufferers by the recent colliery accident near Bridgend , in Wales , amounts in all to about £ 4 , 400 . This is in addition to the sums collected by the local committee at Bridgend and bv the Welsh mayors ; but the whole result of this appeal falls far short
of the sum required—about £ 20 , 000—to provide 5 s . a week to every widow as long as she remains unmarried , and 2 s . Gd . a week to every child up to the age of 13 . It will be remembered that 113 lives were lost in the disaster , and 58 wives , 152 children , and 12 aged relatives became dependent upon charity .
The approaching visit of the Prime Minister to Oxford to deliver the first Romanes Lecture is being looked forward to with much interest . , Mr . and Mrs . Gladstone will arrive in Oxford on Saturday week , and will be the guests of the Dean of Christchurch and Mrs . Paget . The trust , which has been founded by Professor Romanes , provides for the
delivery of a lecture once a year by a gentleman nominated by the Vice-Chancellor , on a subject approved by him in literature , science , or art . The subject Mr . Gladstone has selected is " Mediaeval Universities , with special reference to the University of Oxford . " The lecture will be delivered in the Sheldonian Theatre .
