Walter Besant was re-elected treasurer , and Bro . J . W . Freeman , Tyler . The Secretary presented the lodge , on behalf of Bro . J . S . Cumberland , who was unavoidably absent , with a very handsome

cushion , emblazoned with the lodge cognizance , for the Volume of the Sacred Law , and , on behalf of Bro . Thomas Cohu , with a square and compasses , also handsomely engraved with the insignia of the lodge . The Secretary was instructed to write ' letters of thanks to both these brethren , fhe Secretary announced that one of their members , Bro . H . J . Whymper , CLE ., had been appointed by his Royal Highness to the office of District Grand Master of the

Punjab , and it was agreed to forward to Bro . Whymper an illuminated address of congratulation . It was also moved , and carried— "That Bro . William Harry Rylands , Past Grand Steward , having completed his year of office as \ VorshipfuI Master of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge , No . 207 6 , the thanks of the brethren be , and hereby are , tendered to him for his courtesy in the chair , and efficient management of the affairs of the lodge , and that this

resolution be suitably engrossed and presented to bim . " The Worshipful Master then read a paper , being some "Notes on the Masonic Apron , " in which he traced its various forms from the first representations of it which have come down to us , and supplied a large mass of very curious and interesting information . The paper was copiously illustrated with drawings and specimens of old and curious aprons , and when printed will form a very important

contribution to the subject . We say contribution , because the lecturer did not exhaust his subject , and has promised further additional information at a future date . Time did not admit of much discussion , but the few remarks which were made where naturally highly appreciative , and a vote of thanks to the lecturer was carried by acclamation . Dr . 1 . Balfour Cockburn then exhibited some curious brass

chapter officer's jewels , and a handsome and quaint Craft jewel , which had been made in China . The Secretary exhibited a lithograph of a curious Masonic handkerchief which had been lately published by Col . Mead , and a very similar handkerchief which had been lent to him for exhibition by Bro . Vernon . This concluded the business , and the brethren adjourned lo the Holborn Restaurant for dinner .

Warrant Officers Lodge ( No . 2346 ) . —The opening , after the holidays , was well attended on Friday , tte 23 rd ult .., at Freemasons' Hall , there being 45 members and eight visitors present . Bros . W . Ofield and T . Baker were raised to the Sublime Degree of a M . M ., and Bros . A . A . Bingham and W . J . Hossack were passed to the Second Degree . Messrs . H . Wall , G . E . Berry , and L . Solomon having been initiated , Bro . I . Lewis , S . D ., was

presented with a Past Treasurer's jewel by the W . M ., in consideration of his services as first Treasurer of the lodge . In returning thanks , Bro . Lewis made a brief reply . The W . M . gave notice of his intention of founding a Royal Arch chapter in connection with the lodge . Bro . J . B . Short , 1926 , was balloted for as a joining member , and was unanimously elected . The meeting was conducted with much spirit and excellent working , and was closed in the usual form .

ALDERLEY . . Alan Lodge ( No . 2368 ) . —The installation meeting of this very popular lodge was held on the 5 th instant , at the Queen's Hotel . The attendance of brethren were very numerous , including many influential Provincial Grand Officers of various provinces . The lodge has had a wonderfully successful year , under the able Mastership of Bra . H . Gordon Small , W . M ., P . G . D . G , whose energy for anything pertaining to Masonry is so well-known in the Province of Cheshire .

John Clayton , P . P . G . Reg ., as S . W . ; G . D . Pochin , P . P . G . Reg ., as J . W . ; and A . U'vley , P . P . A . G . Sec , as I . G . Bro . Thos . Wild Markand , P . G . S ., and W . M . elect , was presented by Bro . Wm .

Kamsden , P . P . G . D ., and was duly installed into the chair of K . S ., in the presence of 20 Installed Masters , in a most perffct manner . The W . M . was saluted and proclaimed . Ihe working tools were presented by the Installing Master , 'he officers were invested by the W . M ., and were addressed by Bro . W . W . Wilson , P . P . G . D . The addresses were delivered by Bro . E . T . Everett , P . P . G . D . C .

Provincial Meetings.

The Worshipful Master , in responding , said : I can assure you , Bro . Egerton , and one and all , the enthusiastic manner in which this toast has been received has almost overpowered me . I feel the duty 1 have taken upon myself is a very difficult one indeed , having to follow such an one as our I . P . M ., Bro . Small . 1 feel it both responsible and honourable . But we are not only met together for

enjoyment , bul for that great purpose to assist those who are less fortunate than ourselves and are reduced to calamity , and I take this opportunity for thanking you for receiving the toast of my health as heartily as you have done , and I wish especially to thank the members of the Provincial Grand Lodge and the musical brethren for all coming forward to make the occasion the su : cess it has proved

to night . The Worshipful Master proposed "The I . P . M . " The I . P . M ., in reply , thanked the brethren for the way in which they had received the toast . He had endeavoured to do his best for the benefit ' of the lodge ever since its formation , and he should always continue to do so . There were some who had said when the idea was first originated ,

that there was no need for a lodge . But from his own observations he knew that there was , and he thought to see the assembly there that evening and the state of the lodge funds would bear him out that his observations had been correct . He should always look upon the jewel they had presented to him with great pride . Other toasts followed , and were responded to .

The musical arrangements were carried out under the direction of Bro . Hopkinson , P . M ., assisted by Bros . Grimshaiv , Stewart , Howard , and Walsh . The following were present : Bros . H . M . for the ensuing year , the suffrages of the brethren being unanimously in favour of Bro . J . Nevin , S . W ., who briefly acknowledged his election , and stated that it would be his sincere and earnest endeavour during his

year of office to prove that the confidence ofthe brethren had not been misplaced . Bro . John T . Last , J . W ., was elected Treasurer , and Bro . John Morton , Tyler . The ballot was taken for Mr . Thos . Percy Sykes , which proved in his favour , and , being in attendance , hc was inttiatcd into the mysteries of the Craft by Bro . Thos . Wainman Holmes , P . M ., P . P . G . O . Bro . John Harland was passed to the

Second Degree b y Bro . S . A . Bailey , P . M . A resolution was carried changing the date for the meetings of the lodge from the second to the first Thursday in the month , and amending the by-laws in harmony therewith . 'The lodge was closed , and Ihe brethren adjourned for refreshment , at which the W . M . presided . After the usuaUoyal toasts , the Worshipful Master

proposed " Ihe Visiting Brethren , and in doing so gave them a cordial welcome . It was but seldom that thc lodge met without having the company of visitors , whom they at all times heartily welcomed , and particularly distinguished visitors from other provinces . Bro . Boden , P . M . 2231 , P . P . G . D . C . West Lanes ., in responding , referred to his long connection with Freemasonry , and expressed the pleasure it had afforded him to

visit so young a lodge , and also to find it in such a nourishing condition , and the ceremonies worked in such a satisfactory manner . Bro . Tilley , Goo , also responded . Thc toast of "Ihe Worshipful Master" was also proposed by Bro . Boden , 22 3 1 , and suitably acknowledged . During the evening Bros . 'Tilley , Harris , and Hirst contributed songs and solos to the harmony of the meeting .

The business of the meeting was to raise Bro . C . C . Renaud . Bro . Cobb , I . P . M ., at the request of the W . M ., assisted in the ceremony by giving the traditional history . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren dispersed , to re-assemble later on for refreshment , In proposing "The Health of the Visitors , " the W . M .

Provincial Meetings.

said he was very pleased to welcome so many visitors on that the closing night of their work for the year . They had in the past season again been favoured by the presence of a considerable number of brethren , for he found that during the summer they had entertained about 50 guests . He could assure their visitors that a most cordial greeting awaited them whenever they came to the Kingswood Lodge ,

and they especially liked to see those brethren who by a repreated visit showed that they appreciated the welcome extended to them . He felt that the presence of their visitors was a personal compliment to himself as well as to the lodge .

Ihe toast was very heartily received , and each of the visitors responded . Bros . Upton , Rowlands , and Wye kindly assisted to promote the harmony of the meeting . The 'Tyler ' s toast brought to a conclusion the final meeting of a very successful season .

C . Williams . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts having been given , and responded to , the W . M . proposed " T \\ i R . W . the

Prov . Grand Master ; the D . P . G . M ., Bro . Tennant ; and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " which was suitably responded to by the Deputy Prov . Grand Master . The toast of " The W . M . " was then proposed , in very complimentary terms , by Bro . Tennant , who said it seldom fell to his lot to be permitted the honour to propose the health of a brother who had been previously installed as

W . M . of two different lodges and now stood before them as W . M . of a lodge for the third time . He congratulated the lodge on selecting so old and tried a M 3 son to preside over them for the ensuing year . The toast was well received . The W . M . responded in a very happy manner , thanking Bro . Tennant for the very kind words spoken in his favour . Other toasts followed , and a very pieasint evening was brought to a close by the Tyler ' s toast .

CRED 1 TON . Unity Lodge ( No . 1332 ) . —There was a large gathering of the members of this lodge at the Masonic Hall , on Thursday , the 29 th ult ., to witness the installation of Bro . James F . Railing as W . M . Considerable interest was manifested in the meeting from the fact that it had been announced that the ceremony of installation was to be

performed by the brother of the W . M . elect , Bro . Thos . J _ . Railing , P . M . and Sec . 51 , P . A . G . D . C . England , Prov . G . Sec . Essex , and in addition to a full muster of members of the lodge , a number of distinguished brethren from Exeter were present . The meeting passed off most happily , and the Installing Master was complimented by the brethren upon the manner in which the ceremony had been conducted .

1 he visitors present included Bro . F . E . Sach , J . vV . 1 S 9 , cousin of the new W . M ., and Bros . F . E . Railing and II . P . Railing , 51 , brothers of the W . M . At the banquet which followed the meeting , Bro . T . J . Railing , in responding to the toast of his health , gave a

brief history of I'reemasonry at Crediton from the year 75 'J > which was listened to with much interest . In the course of his remarks , the speaker said that when invited to attend the present gathering he thought he should like to look up the history of Freemasonry in thc district , and found it was very interesting . Walter Besant was re-elected treasurer , and Bro . J . W . Freeman , Tyler . The Secretary presented the lodge , on behalf of Bro . J . S . Cumberland , who was unavoidably absent , with a very handsome

cushion , emblazoned with the lodge cognizance , for the Volume of the Sacred Law , and , on behalf of Bro . Thomas Cohu , with a square and compasses , also handsomely engraved with the insignia of the lodge . The Secretary was instructed to write ' letters of thanks to both these brethren , fhe Secretary announced that one of their members , Bro . H . J . Whymper , CLE ., had been appointed by his Royal Highness to the office of District Grand Master of the

Punjab , and it was agreed to forward to Bro . Whymper an illuminated address of congratulation . It was also moved , and carried— "That Bro . William Harry Rylands , Past Grand Steward , having completed his year of office as \ VorshipfuI Master of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge , No . 207 6 , the thanks of the brethren be , and hereby are , tendered to him for his courtesy in the chair , and efficient management of the affairs of the lodge , and that this

resolution be suitably engrossed and presented to bim . " The Worshipful Master then read a paper , being some "Notes on the Masonic Apron , " in which he traced its various forms from the first representations of it which have come down to us , and supplied a large mass of very curious and interesting information . The paper was copiously illustrated with drawings and specimens of old and curious aprons , and when printed will form a very important

contribution to the subject . We say contribution , because the lecturer did not exhaust his subject , and has promised further additional information at a future date . Time did not admit of much discussion , but the few remarks which were made where naturally highly appreciative , and a vote of thanks to the lecturer was carried by acclamation . Dr . 1 . Balfour Cockburn then exhibited some curious brass

chapter officer's jewels , and a handsome and quaint Craft jewel , which had been made in China . The Secretary exhibited a lithograph of a curious Masonic handkerchief which had been lately published by Col . Mead , and a very similar handkerchief which had been lent to him for exhibition by Bro . Vernon . This concluded the business , and the brethren adjourned lo the Holborn Restaurant for dinner .

Warrant Officers Lodge ( No . 2346 ) . —The opening , after the holidays , was well attended on Friday , tte 23 rd ult .., at Freemasons' Hall , there being 45 members and eight visitors present . Bros . W . Ofield and T . Baker were raised to the Sublime Degree of a M . M ., and Bros . A . A . Bingham and W . J . Hossack were passed to the Second Degree . Messrs . H . Wall , G . E . Berry , and L . Solomon having been initiated , Bro . I . Lewis , S . D ., was

presented with a Past Treasurer's jewel by the W . M ., in consideration of his services as first Treasurer of the lodge . In returning thanks , Bro . Lewis made a brief reply . The W . M . gave notice of his intention of founding a Royal Arch chapter in connection with the lodge . Bro . J . B . Short , 1926 , was balloted for as a joining member , and was unanimously elected . The meeting was conducted with much spirit and excellent working , and was closed in the usual form .

ALDERLEY . . Alan Lodge ( No . 2368 ) . —The installation meeting of this very popular lodge was held on the 5 th instant , at the Queen's Hotel . The attendance of brethren were very numerous , including many influential Provincial Grand Officers of various provinces . The lodge has had a wonderfully successful year , under the able Mastership of Bra . H . Gordon Small , W . M ., P . G . D . G , whose energy for anything pertaining to Masonry is so well-known in the Province of Cheshire .

The Worshipful Master , in responding , said : I can assure you , Bro . Egerton , and one and all , the enthusiastic manner in which this toast has been received has almost overpowered me . I feel the duty 1 have taken upon myself is a very difficult one indeed , having to follow such an one as our I . P . M ., Bro . Small . 1 feel it both responsible and honourable . But we are not only met together for

enjoyment , bul for that great purpose to assist those who are less fortunate than ourselves and are reduced to calamity , and I take this opportunity for thanking you for receiving the toast of my health as heartily as you have done , and I wish especially to thank the members of the Provincial Grand Lodge and the musical brethren for all coming forward to make the occasion the su : cess it has proved

to night . The Worshipful Master proposed "The I . P . M . " The I . P . M ., in reply , thanked the brethren for the way in which they had received the toast . He had endeavoured to do his best for the benefit ' of the lodge ever since its formation , and he should always continue to do so . There were some who had said when the idea was first originated ,

that there was no need for a lodge . But from his own observations he knew that there was , and he thought to see the assembly there that evening and the state of the lodge funds would bear him out that his observations had been correct . He should always look upon the jewel they had presented to him with great pride . Other toasts followed , and were responded to .

Provincial Meetings.

said he was very pleased to welcome so many visitors on that the closing night of their work for the year . They had in the past season again been favoured by the presence of a considerable number of brethren , for he found that during the summer they had entertained about 50 guests . He could assure their visitors that a most cordial greeting awaited them whenever they came to the Kingswood Lodge ,

and they especially liked to see those brethren who by a repreated visit showed that they appreciated the welcome extended to them . He felt that the presence of their visitors was a personal compliment to himself as well as to the lodge .

Ihe toast was very heartily received , and each of the visitors responded . Bros . Upton , Rowlands , and Wye kindly assisted to promote the harmony of the meeting . The 'Tyler ' s toast brought to a conclusion the final meeting of a very successful season .

Tennant , who said it seldom fell to his lot to be permitted the honour to propose the health of a brother who had been previously installed as

W . M . of two different lodges and now stood before them as W . M . of a lodge for the third time . He congratulated the lodge on selecting so old and tried a M 3 son to preside over them for the ensuing year . The toast was well received . The W . M . responded in a very happy manner , thanking Bro . Tennant for the very kind words spoken in his favour . Other toasts followed , and a very pieasint evening was brought to a close by the Tyler ' s toast .

CRED 1 TON . Unity Lodge ( No . 1332 ) . —There was a large gathering of the members of this lodge at the Masonic Hall , on Thursday , the 29 th ult ., to witness the installation of Bro . James F . Railing as W . M . Considerable interest was manifested in the meeting from the fact that it had been announced that the ceremony of installation was to be

performed by the brother of the W . M . elect , Bro . Thos . J _ . Railing , P . M . and Sec . 51 , P . A . G . D . C . England , Prov . G . Sec . Essex , and in addition to a full muster of members of the lodge , a number of distinguished brethren from Exeter were present . The meeting passed off most happily , and the Installing Master was complimented by the brethren upon the manner in which the ceremony had been conducted .
