Everything he had done vvas due to the good will of those who had promoted him to the position in which he stood ; he had no desire to put himself forward . The lodge was deep in his heart ;

he had always striven for its wellbeing to the best of his ability , and to the end of his days he should do the same . He took no credit to himself ; he vvas put into the position of first Master by the kindness of the brethren who were in the Gallery at the time the Iodge vvas promoted , and ever since the lodge was consecrated he had done everything in singleness of heart . He was very much obliged to the

brethren for recognising the efforts of all thc officers . He could not have done anything at all but for the assistance he had had from other brethren . They desired to promote the good of the lodge , and more especially the good of Freemasonry , in connection vvith journalism . Bro . Herbert Wright said that after all that had been said it would ill become him to do more than to thank the

brethren for the kind compliment they had paid him . How much he had the interest of the lodge at heart they had had an opportunity of seeing in the past ; they had the opportunity of endorsing the Master ' s choice ; but in the position which he occupied by the W . ought to be in that position . Their Bro . Albery had rendered services to the lodge vvhich entitled him to that position , and it was no fault of his that Bro . Albery did not then then stand in the position of S . W . The Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings of a very successful meeting .

The above-named gentlemen were then introduced , and the ceremony of initiation was ably and impressively performed by the W . M . At the conclusion of the ceremony ,

Bro . G . L . Hart rose and said he had been asked to undertake one ot the most pleasing tasks he had ever been called on to do . It vvas to present to the lodge , subscribed for by every member of the Iodge , a most beautifully-executed coloured photograph of their senior P . M ., Bro . Stock , as a mark of the very high esteem and regard in vvhich he vvas held . It vvas in the year 1857 Bro . Stock filled the chair , and in ihe following year was appointed a Prov . G . Officer . In

making the presentation , he begged the W . M . to receive it on behalf of the Iodge , to be held by them in perpetuity The inscription below the portrait is as follows : " Worshipful Bro . Henry Stock , W . M . 1 S 57 ; Prov . G . Sup . of W ., 1858 ; Prov . Gr . J . W ., 1 SS 7 . Presented to the Temple Lodge , No . 558 , by the brethren , as a mark of the esteem in which they hold their senior Past Master . December , 188 S . "

The W . M ., Bro . Dunk , then acknowledged and accepted the very valuable gift , stating that the picture , which was a wondeiful specimen of the art of photography , vvas the vvork of their esteemed Bro . Clarke . Bro . Stock then rose , and , with considerable feeling , said : Worshipful Master and Brethren , —VVhen you , worshipful Sir , first intimated to me the desire of the

brethren to present to my mother lodge this valuable token of their fraternal regard and esteem , I vvas filled vvith emotion ; indeed , I can but now feebly express to you my deep inward feelings of gratification and pleasure that [ should have been chosen as the first representative of that long array of worthy Past Masters whose portraitures may some day grace the walls of this noble temple . And , further , I feel the

gieat honour vvhich will be accorded me of a place in close proximity to our M . W . Grand Master , our R . W . Prov . Grand Master , and to our old and esteemed Bro . Eastes , his Deputy . I cannot disguise trom you my feelings that this last act of your kindliness may be somewhat in recogntion of the fact that I , as your senior Past Master , for a long series of years fought nobly for my lodge , and

zealously endeavoured to keep together the frequently dying embers of the Temple ; neither can you fail to judge of my unbounded satisfaction at being permitted to see it rise , like another Phcenix , from those ashes , to assume the very large proportions it now does . It will be in the recollection of you all that only a few months ago I vvas pres ; nted by the Provincial Grand Lodge with the jubilee

medal and the honorary rank of a P . P . J . G . W . I considered this as one of the greatest honours that could be conferred upon a humble individual like myself ; but , believe me , my brethren , that this honour even pales before the circumstance of to-night , My Brother Hart has kindly wished that I might be spared to be with you for very many years . This , in the ordinary course of

things , I can scarcely expect ; but I do venture to hope that for some little time longer yet I may be permitted to be with you , and to retain that fraternal regard , love , and esteem which I have already earned , so that in death I may not be forgotten . But whenever you gaze upon that picture , it may elicit some passing thought and a kindly

word of one who went in and out among you , and of one who , throughout his long life , ever sought to maintain and practise those three grand Masonic principles of Brotherly Love , Relief , and Truth . Bro . Stock then resumed his seat amid the acclamations of the brethren , and the lodge was closed .

Bro . G .
