The Chelmsford Chronicle says : — " The ladies who have been curious to find out what goes on at the Chelsmford Club , and more especially at the smoking concerts , will be glad to learn that a proposal is on foot to have a concert without smoking , and to admit ladies , some time after Christmas . Surely there never vvas a proposal so fraught with consequences ! At present , the ladies are

said to be dying to know what proves so attractive at the Club to their husbands and sweethearts . Now the sealed book is to be opened to them ; but will they be able to read it ? When they see the rooms , comfortable , indeed , but destitute of those feminine adornments which lend a charm to the home , will they not say 'And is it for this that you desert us ? ' — -understanding nothing of the

attraction which a free and unconventional life has for the male man thing . ' Let us hope they will be more edified than were the ladies who , concealed in the organ loft of an Edinburgh Lodge of Freemasjns heard the proceedings while the lodge was 'tyled in the Third Degree '— whatever that may mean . For admitting the ladies to this myst'C ceremony , two Freemasons were

expelled with ignominy . Something of the same sort vvould happen , no doubt , if private members of the Chelmsford Club were to introduce their female friends to club-life ; but if al ) combine to invite the ladies , no opprobrium will be incurred , everybody will be on his best company manners , and the visitors vvill doubtless be highly edified . Perhaps a few ladies vvill n *) t only attend the concert but take part in it ?"
