[ ERRATA . —For £ 11 , 090 in fourth line of leader on page 92 , read— £ 11 . 126 13 s . 6 d . ] The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Prov . G . M . for Cornwall , in proposing "The Chairman ' s Health , " said that it was as well in exciting times like the present , to turn one's thoughts from war and foreign politics to questions which concerned the meetings of honest

Englishmen , and a question which concerned them very much was that of benevolence and philanthropy . He , with the noble Chairman , congratulated the Institution on the success of this meeting . Masonry had bonds which connected men together in different ways . The great feature of Masonry was its character of being cosmopolitan , and holding out mutual claims and mutual duties . In whatever

part of the world a man might be , Freemasonry made him a brother . It supplied an additional link of friendship to those who lived in the same neighbourhood , and smoothed over differences , social , religious and political , and obliterated variances between men , Masonic obedience to the same Grand Lodge , and the same illustrious Grand Master

united men together who but for Masonry would not bc united . There was not a Mason who would not be ready to die for his Sovereign and his country wherever he might Le . ( Cheers . ) He believed those cheers , were not the cheers of after-dinner philanthropy . He hoped the time might be distant when Masons would bc called upon to fight , but he might add

that " Sufficient for the day was the evil thereof . " To support a good cause was national as well as Masonic , and the Institution which they had met to support was national . Many of the brethren whom they were called upon to subscribe to had sat at that table and been as merry and cheery

as those now present . They might not have thought when they were at that table that they would be recipients of the bounty of this Institution ; but it was a fortunate thing that there was an Institution , which opened its doors to deserting objects of charity . Year by year tributes to its worth were made frcm all parts of the country in the shape
