BRO . ALDERMAN SIR J OSEPH DIMSDALE has kindly promised to preside at the anniversary dinner of the Earlswood Asylum for Idiots on Tuesday , April 9 th , at the Grocers' Hall , Princess-street , E . C , kindly granted by the Court of Assistants of the Company for the occasion .

CRYSTAL PALACE COMPANY . —The gross receipts fct 1 S 94 amount to £ 126 , 601 , and the gross expenditure to £ 114 , 069 , leaving a balance of £ 12 , 532 . BRO . GEORGE ABEOTT , the South-Eastern Railway station-master at Charing Cross , and district superintendent of the line , has been laid up with rheumatism for two days .

LINCOLN s INN FIELDS IS to be opened by the County Council on Saturday , 23 rd inst ., and Whitfield Gardens on the 16 th inst . Sir John Hutton has promised to perform the ceremony in both cases . ACCORDING to the present arrangements the Piince of Wales will leave England either on the 21 st or 23 rd of this month for Florence en route to join his yacht the Britannia , in the Mediterranean , for a three week's cruise .

BRETHREN are invited to send for the list of Masonic Books published at the office of the Freemason . Many wcrks of interest both to the Masonic student and general reader have recently been added , and the publisher will gladly forward a copy to any address on receipt of a postcard .

THE ELECTION MEETING of the Prince of Wales Mark Lodge , No . 4 , was held on the 2 Sth ult . at Mark Masons ' Hall , Great Oueen-street , W . C , Bro . E . W . Lewcock , G . Stwd ., W / M ., in the chair . Bro . F . A . Powell , S . W ., was unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing year , and Bro . Henry Lovegrove was re-elected Treasurer .

BRO . W . BRINLEY was installed as W . M . of the Phoenix Lodge of St . Ann , No . 1235 , in the Masonic rooms of the Town Hall , Buxton , on Thursday , the 7 th inst ., the ceremony being performed by the outgoing Master , Bro . Bryden . The usual banquet followed at the George Hotel .

BRO . THE . EARL OF MOUNT EDGCUMBE , Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall , states that he has been requested by Bro . Passmore Edwards to announce that , in addition to his other gifts to the County of Cornwall , which include buildings for public libraries at Falmouth , I la vie , Camborne ,

Redruth , and other places , he is prepared to provide similar buildings at St . Ives , llelston , Penryn , St . Austell , Liskeard , Ucdmin , and Launceston , if they , like the other towns , will adopt the Free Libraries Act and undertake to maintain the libraries out of the public rates .

LURGAN MASONIC BAZAAR . —In connection with the above , the Committee have arranged for a series of entertainments up to the end of April , and on Friday , the 1 st of February , the brethren and their friends had an opportunity of hearing Bro . Dr . Rentoul's lecture , entitled , " The girl I left behind me , " which was delivered in his usual racy style ,

and was thoroughly appreciated . " The new woman , " being the subject . The chair was occupied by Bro . B . W . D . Montgomery , iS ° , P . P . S . G . W . Antrim . The brethren appeared in regalia , and after the usual vote of thanks to the lecturer and Chairman , the proceedings terminated with the National Anthem .

MASONIC PREMISESFOR KINGSTON AND SURBITON . —A well attended meeting of the members of the Craft in and around Kingston was held at Fife House , on the 23 rd ult ., by kind permission of the owner , Bro . Sir Whittaker Ellis , Bart ., to consider the question of purchasing it and adopting it for Masonic uses . Bro . Golden , P . M ., was voted to the chair . Bro . Shelley , P . M ., in a lucid preface

to the subsequent proceedings , said the question of providing suitable Masonic premises in the town was discussed about 10 years ago , when there was a strong feeling that something should be done . The necessity was now felt to be greater than ever . The matter was originally left with certain brethren to look out for a site and submit details of what they would propose , but it was to be deeply regretted

that nothing had been heard of the subject since that time , ln calling the present meeting he was sure the brethren would credit him with the best intentions for the good of Freemasonry . Bro . Shelley then read a very kind and encouraging letter from the P . G . M ., Bro . Colonel Noel Money , and similar communications from the P . G . Secretary , and many other influential brethren . A general

discussion followed , Bros . Golden , Chapman , Levy , Purkess , Sherwcod , Smeal , Laurence , and others very ably expressed their views , Bro . Purkess , quoting from the current issue of the Freemason a number of smaller places than Kingston and Surbiton , where brethren enjoyed the comforts of meeting in their own building . There being absolute unanimity as to the urgent want of proper premises in the

neighbourhood , the importance of a . central site ( Fife House not having that advantage ) being strongly pressed sothat the whole of the lodges in Kingston and Surbiton might meet under one roof . A Committee was then formed , consisting of Bros . W . Chapman , P . M . Dobie Lodge ; Hewitt , P . M . Surbiton Lodge ; J . Chapman , P . M . Arnold

Lodge ; Lewis , P . M . Noel Lodge ; Pennington , P . M . BrownriggLodge ; Charlton , W . M . St . Margaret ' s Lodge ; Lockett , VV . M . elect Frederick West Lodge ; Purkess , J . D . Frederick West . Lodge ; and Sherwood , Moles-. y Lodge ; with Bro . Shelley , as Secretary , to further consider the project , and report thereon to another meeting as soon as possible .

The same amount is also placed to the reserve account . THE HON . F . H . S . ROBERTS , King ' s Own Royal Rifles , only son of Bro . General Lord Roberts , has been appointed aide de camp to Lieut .-General Sir W . Lockhart , commanding the Wazirisban expedition , in the place of Lieut . I . D . S . Lockhart , deceased .

A BAZAAR , in aid of the British and Foreign Sailors ' Society , will be opened at the Cannon-street , Hotel , on the 26 th March , by her Royal Highness , the Princess Louise , Duchess of Fife , and the Princess of Wales has very kindly consented to become patroness of the Russian stall .

BRO . ADMIRAL LORD ALCESTF . R , G . C . B ., Past Grand Senior Warden , has been lying ill at his chambers for some time . During the last few days his condition has become critical , and the doctors have refused to allow anyone to see him . He is suffering from an attack of bronchitis of a severe character .

THE ANNUAL MEETING of the Apollo Lodge , No . 2042 , was held at the Freemasons' Hall , Liverpool , on Wednesday , the 6 th instant , when Bro . John Lane was installed in office as W . M . for the ensuing year by his predecessor , Bro . John Burrows . There was a large number of members and visitors present on the occasion .

THE ANNUAL BALL in aid of the Masonic Charities by the Wbitwell Lodge , No . 1390 , was held in the West County Hall , Millom , on Tuesday evening , the 5 th inst . No pains were spared by the Ball Committee to ensure the success of the gathering , and everything passed off admirably . Unfortunately , the weather debarred many who would have been present from attending .

THE INSTALLATION MEETING of the St . German ' s Lodge , No . 5 C 6 , was held in the lodge quarters , Selby , on Friday , the Sth inst ., when Bro . S . M . Scott , S . W ., W . M . elect , was installed in the chair of K . S ., the ceremony being very impressively performed by Bro . Mark Scott , P . M ., P . P . J . G . W . The customary banquet followed at the Londesborough Arms Hotel .

AT A REGULAR MEETING of the John Hervey Lodge , No . 1260 , held at the Freemasons' Hall , W . C , on the 13 th inst ., Bro . Reep , Sec , was elected W . M ., and was also cordially congratulated on the occasion of his silver wedding . Bro . J . H . Evans , S . W ., was thanked for his kindness in standing aside in order to allow the Secretary to occupy the chair during the ensuing year .

As THE RESULTof a meeting which was held last summer at the Mansion House in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution , a City Branch has been formed , and established its offices at S , Prince ' s-slreet , E . C . Sir John Lubbock , Bart ., M . P ., has accepted the office of Treasurer , and Captain F . E . D . Acland , that of Honorary Secretary .

THE IO 6 TH ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL , in aid of the City Dispensary , will be held at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgate-street , on Thursday , the 28 th instant . Bro . the Right Hon . Sir Joseph Renals , the Lord Mayor of London , will preside , and will be supported by the Sheriffs of the City of London , the Under-Sheriffs , and others interested in the efficient maintenance of this important Institution .

THERE was a very full attendance of members and visitors at the annual meeting of the Hartington Lodge , No . 10 S 5 , at the Masonic Hall , Derby , on Wednesday , the 6 th inst ., when Bro . W . Hart was installed W . M . Subsequently , the W . M . announced his intention of going up at the Festival of the R . M . B . I ., and the lodge voted £ 21 towards his list .

A CONVERSAZIONE will be held at the Mansion House under the auspices of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress in aid of the Central and East-End Poor Districts , at the London City Mission . Addresses will be delivered by the Rev . E . A . B . Sanders , Rectorof Whitechapel ; the Rev . G . F . Pentecost , D . D ., Minister of the Presbyterian _ Church , Marylebone , and others , while a selection of music will be given by students of the Guildhall School of Music .

THE FUNERAL of Bro . William Woodward , who has been Prov . G . Tyler of Somersetshire for several years as well as Tyler of the Rural Philanthropic Lodge , No . 291 , Highbridge , and other lodges , took place at Burnham Cemetery , on Thursday , the 7 th inst . The deceased , who had attained the ripe age of 85 years , was very highly and generally respected , many prominent members of the Craft in Somersetshire were present at the graveside to pay their last tiibute of respect to so worthy a brother .

IT IS EXPECTED that the loan exhibition of pictures the City Corporation intends to hold this year will be opened about the middle of Apiil . Last year ' s [ exhibition was a great success , having been attended probably by a larger number of people than ever went to the Guildhall exhibition . On the present occasion the pictures will be confined mainly to the best examples of the English and Dutch schools . A notable collection of mediruval jewellery belonging to Sir Charles Robinson will form a feature of the exhibition .

THE FOURTH ANNUAL BALL AND CONCERT in aid of the City Police Convalescent Home was held at the City Terminus Hotel , Cannon-street , on Monday , when there were present about 1000 ladies and gentlemen . The concert was given in the large coffee-room , while t ' . ie Imperial

and Grand Halls were reserved for dancing . For the present the institution is situated in a wing of the Mo : ley Convalescent Home , at St . Margaret's , Dover , but as soon as futids peimit , a separate building will be erected . We should hope that a goodly result will be obtained from the very enjoyable entertainment on Monday .

OUR HEALTH IN WINTER . —Dr . Andrew Wilson , writing in Lloyd's Newspaper on diet , says : " The teaching of nature should never be neglected , and in ths matter ot winter food let us see we are not wrong , and take sufficient fat , for the changes that result in the wear and tear of our bodies are lessened in intensity by the fat of food .

and the need for flesh is always less when fat forms a due proportion of our diet . " The doctor proceeds to enumerate natural products that are admirable , among them " cocoa , " with its contained cocoa butter . Relatively to this it may be said that Epps ' s Prepared Cocoa retains all the constituents of the natural cocoa , including the oil or butter , intact .

WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE that Bro . the Rev . J , Stephen Barrass , rector of St . Michael , Bassishaw , is suffering from a severe chill . BRO . DR . RALPH GOODING , J . P ., has been elected the medical officer of the Norman Lodge ( Greenwich ) of the Ancient Order of Comical Fellows .

BRO . GEORGE PHILLIP ' , the chairman of the Holborn District Board of Works , will be in the chair at the Holborn Restaurant on Monday at the annual dinner of the local authorities of the neighbourhood . BRO . J USTICE CAVE , who is on circuit in Bristol , was so unwell on Wedneseay that he was unable to leave his hotel , and a heavy case , which had been proceeded with the day previously , had in consequence to be held over .

THE FRPNCH Atlantic liner , the Gascoigne , as tothe safety of which so much anxiety had been felt , has happily reached its destination ( New York ) , after a terrible passage of 15 days . A broken shaft was the cause of the protraded voyage . NEW NORTH LONDON PHILANTHROPIC SOCIETY . —The fourth annual ball in aid of the funds of the above Society

will take place on Monday , March 4 th , at the Goswell Hall , Goswell-road , E . C . Among the brethren who have kindl y given their services are Bros . W . Ofield , G . Ring , A . Underwood , and R . Maskall , and Bro . VV . Piper , Hon , Sec , 20 , Culford-road , N . IT IS PROPOSBD to erect a memorial to the late Bro .

Chirgwin , J . P ., Prov . G . Sec . Cornwall , in the Cathedral at Truro . The Dean and Chapter have already given their consent to the proposal , which contemplates the placing of a stained glass window in the Cathedral and beneath or near it an alabaster or marble tablet . The Mayor of Truro has consented to act as Treasurer and Major Park yn as Hon . Sec .

A NUMEROUS AND INFLUENTIAL MEETING was held in the Egyptian Hall of the Mansion House , on Wednesday , at which the Duke of Connaught , President of St . Thomas ' s Hospital , made an earnest appeal for funds to enable that ancient institution to open the five wards which have been

closed for want of the needful means . Alderman Sir Stewart Knill presided , in the absence , through indisposition , of the Lord Mayor , Bro . Sir Joseph Renals , and among those present were the Sheriffs , the Earl of Leven and Melville , the Bishop of Southward , and others . The sum it is desired to raise is £ 100 , 000 .

THE NELSON BAZAAR , in aid of the fund which is being raised for restoring the parish church of Burnham Thorpe , in Norfolk , where our great naval hero was born , and which was opened on Tuesday , at the Admiralty , Whitehall , by the kind permission of Earl Spencer , was visited by the Duke and Duchess of York on the onenini ?

day , and inspected with deep interest the numerous relics of the great English admiral , which had been brought together to supplement the bazaar . There was also on view "Alumma ' s Umbrella , " which was captured last autumn by British bluejackets , and sent home as a trophy of the slave raider's defeat , and the capture of his stronghold .

AI . PASS BENEVOLENT FUND . —The annual meeting was held on Wednesday , the 6 th instant , at the Masonic Hall , Liverpool , and was well attended . The chair was taken by the president , Bro . R . Wylie , P . Prov . S . G . W ., Past S . G . D , or Eng ., supported by Bro . Goodacre , P . G . Sec , P . G . S . B . of Eng ., & c . From the Treasurer's report . it

appeared that the finances were in a fairly satisfactory state ; but that , in view of the fast-in creasing claims on behalf of widows for whom the institution exists , it would be incumbent on all to use their utmost efforts on its behalf . The following officers were appointed : Bros . G . Harradan , Treasurer ( re-elected ) , and J . Pittaway , Secretary . Bros , J . Piatt , H . W . Johnson , P . P . G . D ., and W . Savage , were elected Auditots .

THE SILVER WEDDING of Bro . Sir Albert and Lady Altman will be a memorable event in the history of the Altman family . Our worthy brother has done good service in his corporate capacity to the Ward of Aldersgate , and Lady Altman is as justly respected among the ladies of the City as her husband is among the members of the Corporation . It is not surprising , therefore , that the auspicious

anniversary we have mentioned should have been turned to account by the friends of Bro . Sir A . and Lady Altman , or that they should have shown them due honour and respect by presenting to the lady a diamond necklace , and to her husband a handsome silver salver , bearing a suitable inscription . The meeting at which the presentation was

made in No . 3 Committee Room of the Guildhall , on Tuesday , and , notwithstanding hissevere indisposition , the Right Hon . the Lord Mayor , Bro . Sir J oseph Renals , presided at the function , and made as genial speech as his cold would permit , when handing the gifts to Bro . Sir A . and Lady Altman .

A VERY SUCCESSFUL BALL was given at the Working Men's Institute , Ormskirk , on Tuesday , the 5 th instant , by the Lodge of Harmony , No . 580 , and the West Lancashire Lodge , No . 1403 . The decorations , the arrangements , the supper , and the music were excellent , thanks to the zeal and discretion exhibited by the joint secretaries , Bros . A . J . Potter and A . Astor . Bro . R . C .

LURGAN MASONIC BAZAAR . —In connection with the above , the Committee have arranged for a series of entertainments up to the end of April , and on Friday , the 1 st of February , the brethren and their friends had an opportunity of hearing Bro . Dr . Rentoul's lecture , entitled , " The girl I left behind me , " which was delivered in his usual racy style ,

and was thoroughly appreciated . " The new woman , " being the subject . The chair was occupied by Bro . B . W . D . Montgomery , iS ° , P . P . S . G . W . Antrim . The brethren appeared in regalia , and after the usual vote of thanks to the lecturer and Chairman , the proceedings terminated with the National Anthem .

MASONIC PREMISESFOR KINGSTON AND SURBITON . —A well attended meeting of the members of the Craft in and around Kingston was held at Fife House , on the 23 rd ult ., by kind permission of the owner , Bro . Sir Whittaker Ellis , Bart ., to consider the question of purchasing it and adopting it for Masonic uses . Bro . Golden , P . M ., was voted to the chair . Bro . Shelley , P . M ., in a lucid preface

to the subsequent proceedings , said the question of providing suitable Masonic premises in the town was discussed about 10 years ago , when there was a strong feeling that something should be done . The necessity was now felt to be greater than ever . The matter was originally left with certain brethren to look out for a site and submit details of what they would propose , but it was to be deeply regretted

that nothing had been heard of the subject since that time , ln calling the present meeting he was sure the brethren would credit him with the best intentions for the good of Freemasonry . Bro . Shelley then read a very kind and encouraging letter from the P . G . M ., Bro . Colonel Noel Money , and similar communications from the P . G . Secretary , and many other influential brethren . A general

discussion followed , Bros . Golden , Chapman , Levy , Purkess , Sherwcod , Smeal , Laurence , and others very ably expressed their views , Bro . Purkess , quoting from the current issue of the Freemason a number of smaller places than Kingston and Surbiton , where brethren enjoyed the comforts of meeting in their own building . There being absolute unanimity as to the urgent want of proper premises in the

neighbourhood , the importance of a . central site ( Fife House not having that advantage ) being strongly pressed sothat the whole of the lodges in Kingston and Surbiton might meet under one roof . A BAZAAR , in aid of the British and Foreign Sailors ' Society , will be opened at the Cannon-street , Hotel , on the 26 th March , by her Royal Highness , the Princess Louise , Duchess of Fife , and the Princess of Wales has very kindly consented to become patroness of the Russian stall .

BRO . ADMIRAL LORD ALCESTF . R , G . C . B ., Past Grand Senior Warden , has been lying ill at his chambers for some time . During the last few days his condition has become critical , and the doctors have refused to allow anyone to see him . He is suffering from an attack of bronchitis of a severe character .

THE ANNUAL MEETING of the Apollo Lodge , No . 2042 , was held at the Freemasons' Hall , Liverpool , on Wednesday , the 6 th instant , when Bro . John Lane was installed in office as W . M . for the ensuing year by his predecessor , Bro . John Burrows . There was a large number of members and visitors present on the occasion .

THE ANNUAL BALL in aid of the Masonic Charities by the Wbitwell Lodge , No . 1390 , was held in the West County Hall , Millom , on Tuesday evening , the 5 th inst . No pains were spared by the Ball Committee to ensure the success of the gathering , and everything passed off admirably . Unfortunately , the weather debarred many who would have been present from attending .

THE INSTALLATION MEETING of the St . German ' s Lodge , No . 5 C 6 , was held in the lodge quarters , Selby , on Friday , the Sth inst ., when Bro . S . M . Scott , S . W ., W . M . elect , was installed in the chair of K . S ., the ceremony being very impressively performed by Bro . Mark Scott , P . M ., P . P . J . G . W . The customary banquet followed at the Londesborough Arms Hotel .

AT A REGULAR MEETING of the John Hervey Lodge , No . 1260 , held at the Freemasons' Hall , W . C , on the 13 th inst ., Bro . Reep , Sec , was elected W . M ., and was also cordially congratulated on the occasion of his silver wedding . Bro . J . H . Evans , S . W ., was thanked for his kindness in standing aside in order to allow the Secretary to occupy the chair during the ensuing year .

THERE was a very full attendance of members and visitors at the annual meeting of the Hartington Lodge , No . 10 S 5 , at the Masonic Hall , Derby , on Wednesday , the 6 th inst ., when Bro . W . Hart was installed W . M . Subsequently , the W . M . announced his intention of going up at the Festival of the R . M . B . I ., and the lodge voted £ 21 towards his list .

A CONVERSAZIONE will be held at the Mansion House under the auspices of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress in aid of the Central and East-End Poor Districts , at the London City Mission . Addresses will be delivered by the Rev . E . A . B . Sanders , Rectorof Whitechapel ; the Rev . G . F . Pentecost , D . D ., Minister of the Presbyterian _ Church , Marylebone , and others , while a selection of music will be given by students of the Guildhall School of Music .

THE FUNERAL of Bro . William Woodward , who has been Prov . G . Tyler of Somersetshire for several years as well as Tyler of the Rural Philanthropic Lodge , No . 291 , Highbridge , and other lodges , took place at Burnham Cemetery , on Thursday , the 7 th inst . The deceased , who had attained the ripe age of 85 years , was very highly and generally respected , many prominent members of the Craft in Somersetshire were present at the graveside to pay their last tiibute of respect to so worthy a brother .

IT IS EXPECTED that the loan exhibition of pictures the City Corporation intends to hold this year will be opened about the middle of Apiil . Last year ' s [ exhibition was a great success , having been attended probably by a larger number of people than ever went to the Guildhall exhibition . On the present occasion the pictures will be confined mainly to the best examples of the English and Dutch schools . A notable collection of mediruval jewellery belonging to Sir Charles Robinson will form a feature of the exhibition .

THE FOURTH ANNUAL BALL AND CONCERT in aid of the City Police Convalescent Home was held at the City Terminus Hotel , Cannon-street , on Monday , when there were present about 1000 ladies and gentlemen . The concert was given in the large coffee-room , while t ' . ie Imperial

and Grand Halls were reserved for dancing . For the present the institution is situated in a wing of the Mo : ley Convalescent Home , at St . Margaret's , Dover , but as soon as futids peimit , a separate building will be erected . We should hope that a goodly result will be obtained from the very enjoyable entertainment on Monday .

OUR HEALTH IN WINTER . —Dr . Andrew Wilson , writing in Lloyd's Newspaper on diet , says : " The teaching of nature should never be neglected , and in ths matter ot winter food let us see we are not wrong , and take sufficient fat , for the changes that result in the wear and tear of our bodies are lessened in intensity by the fat of food .

and the need for flesh is always less when fat forms a due proportion of our diet . " The doctor proceeds to enumerate natural products that are admirable , among them " cocoa , " with its contained cocoa butter . J USTICE CAVE , who is on circuit in Bristol , was so unwell on Wedneseay that he was unable to leave his hotel , and a heavy case , which had been proceeded with the day previously , had in consequence to be held over .

THE FRPNCH Atlantic liner , the Gascoigne , as tothe safety of which so much anxiety had been felt , has happily reached its destination ( New York ) , after a terrible passage of 15 days . A broken shaft was the cause of the protraded voyage . NEW NORTH LONDON PHILANTHROPIC SOCIETY . —The fourth annual ball in aid of the funds of the above Society

A NUMEROUS AND INFLUENTIAL MEETING was held in the Egyptian Hall of the Mansion House , on Wednesday , at which the Duke of Connaught , President of St . Thomas ' s Hospital , made an earnest appeal for funds to enable that ancient institution to open the five wards which have been

closed for want of the needful means . Alderman Sir Stewart Knill presided , in the absence , through indisposition , of the Lord Mayor , Bro . Sir Joseph Renals , and among those present were the Sheriffs , the Earl of Leven and Melville , the Bishop of Southward , and others . The sum it is desired to raise is £ 100 , 000 .

THE NELSON BAZAAR , in aid of the fund which is being raised for restoring the parish church of Burnham Thorpe , in Norfolk , where our great naval hero was born , and which was opened on Tuesday , at the Admiralty , Whitehall , by the kind permission of Earl Spencer , was visited by the Duke and Duchess of York on the onenini ?

day , and inspected with deep interest the numerous relics of the great English admiral , which had been brought together to supplement the bazaar . There was also on view "Alumma ' s Umbrella , " which was captured last autumn by British bluejackets , and sent home as a trophy of the slave raider's defeat , and the capture of his stronghold .

THE SILVER WEDDING of Bro . Sir Albert and Lady Altman will be a memorable event in the history of the Altman family . Our worthy brother has done good service in his corporate capacity to the Ward of Aldersgate , and Lady Altman is as justly respected among the ladies of the City as her husband is among the members of the Corporation . It is not surprising , therefore , that the auspicious

anniversary we have mentioned should have been turned to account by the friends of Bro . Sir A . and Lady Altman , or that they should have shown them due honour and respect by presenting to the lady a diamond necklace , and to her husband a handsome silver salver , bearing a suitable inscription .
