The cloth being removed , the W . M ., in most eloquent terms , gave the loyal and Masonic toasts which were duly honoured .

The toast of " The Grand Officers , Present and Past" was presented most forcibly by the W . M ., and duly responded to very ably by Bro . GASKIN , P . P . G . D . C . Middx ,, for the Provincial Grand Officers .

The toast of "The Worshipful Master" was then given by Bro . BEECROFT , l . P . M ., stating it was his duty , and gave him the greatest possible pleasure in proposing , and he was confident it would be enthusiastically received by the whole of the company . In his opinion , Bro . Tom Knibb was the best man in the whole world , and deserved their best thanks for so ably performing his duties , and more particularly for the success he had achieved in bringing together and presiding over this magnificent and enjoyable gathering , the largest and most successful the lodge had ever seen . The toast was received most enthusiastically .

ln reply , Bro . T . F . KNIBB , W . M ., heartily thanked the company for such a cordial reception , and said Bro . Beecroft , in his warm heart , had stated a very tall order in calling him the best man in the world . However , the evidence of pleasure I see upon the faces of the company amply repays me for all my exertions , I cannot take my seat without expressing my thanks to our Bro . Austin , P . M ., Sec , to whose persevering energy and untiring assistance , as well as to the Stewards and officers , as also to the splendid artistes who have enlivened us with their sweet music , which have all conduced to the unqualified success of this large gathering .

In presenting the toast of "The Ladies , " the W . M . said he was confident the brethren of the Southern Star Lodge would receive it with the utmost cordiality . He would inform the ladies that the brethren were never happier than when in their society , and he hoped for many years their company would be appreciated on similar occasions for at least once in every year . As the toast was a delicate one to talk upon , he need say no more to mark the appreciation of the brethren , and would couple with the toast the name of Bro . John Lightfoot , P . M . 1901 .

In reply , Bro . LIGHTFOOT , said r At the command of the W . M ., and under his hypnotic influence , I sink my identity as a poor , weak man , and become for a few moments a lady , and at once on their behalf offer you our sincere thanks for a most enjoyable and intellectual evening . Your kindness in inviting us here , and

the thoughtful and considerate care with which everything has been done for our comfort to-night fully entitles you to our love and esteem . It carries my thoughts back to that eventful evening when my sweetheart was initiated , upon whose return home with a woman ' s usual curiosity , I tried to learn something but without success , until he fell asleep , when I heard the refrain :

" No mortal can more the ladies adore Than a Free and Accepted Mason , " clearly showing that on the very night of their initiation we held a warm place in their hearts . In accepting your very kind invitation , we were very anxious to discover a precedent to act upon , and after consulting that Book of all Books , we were successful in the beautiful and majestic Queen of Shebawho not content in

, sending an ambassador to King Solomon as the other sovereigns had done , herself journeyed to Jerusalem with a numerous retinue , accompanied with costly presents , to congratulate him upon the completion of Temple . Now we have come to the Southern Star Lodge to congratulate the representative of King Solomon on his good work , and looking around you must admit we have brought a numerous retinue , and what more costly jewels can we give than our love and

esteem , and jast but not least , our own sweet selves . We are accustomed to receive , and , in fact , are conceited enough to expect our beauty to command the admiration of the sterner sex , but to-night I have observed a more than usual amount of attention in this respect . If it is my attire that your eyes are resting upon , 1 hasten to inform you that I am not the " New Woman , " so much talked about . Of coursethere is a great diversity of opinion about the new woman

, , but we all agree that we are to be congratulated upon the fact that l ? ? . ° f our sisters have succeeded in wresting at the Universities some of the highest honours , and it is only fair to say that in the 20 th century the ladies will still further advance their position . It will not surprise me to know that the New Woman of the 20 th century will found a lodge and place some worthy sister the

'n chair of the Queen of Sheba , and that atone of our lodge meetings an advanced sister , the very counterpart of your esteemed Bro . Beecroft , P . M ., may make a proposition in open lodge that we have a gentleman ' s night . So if you are all good boys we may invite you to that meeting , in return for your great Kindness to us to-night . On behalf of the ladies , I tender you our sincere and S | sterl y thanks .

In presenting the toast of " The Past Masters and the Officers , " the W . M . mentioned the unfailing kindness and assistance always rendered by the Past "asters to advance the best interests of the lodge , and specially expressing the Jjf P 'eeling of grief and regret the lodge had experienced during the past year in h d 1 ° f Br ° S" Tom Brad y and Char , e 5 Wright , two esteemed brethren , who bpl ! , ways ta ' a most active interest in the lodge , and he hereby expressed , on enalt of the brethren , their deeDest svmoathv with their relatives . M . must have gone home with the conviction that he had not only done his duty well in the lodge , but had given those brethren who had braved stern winter ' s blast the opportunity of enjoying a most agreeable entertainment .

Lion and Lamb Lodge ( No . 192 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held on Thursday , the 7 th inst ,, at Cannon-street Hotel , when there were present Bros . Jas . Smith , W . M . ; T . W . The minutes of the December meeting and the two emergency meetings in January were read and confirmed . Bro . T . W . Fisher , S . vV ., was unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing year . Bro . Thos . Cohu was unanimously re-elected Treasurer . The W . M . read the dispensation from Grand Lodge permitting the brethren to wear . Ylisonic clothing at the dinner on that evening , ladies biing present . Bros . Bevan , Eggleton ,

and Stokes were elected as members of the Audit Committee . Notice ot motion by Bro . Hughes , P . M ., "To vote £ 10 10 s . to the Benevolent Institution , to be placed on the list of Bro . Jas . Smith , W . M ., who will represent the lodge at the annual festival . " Notice of motion by Bro . Legge , P . M ,, Sec , " That the usual jewel be presented to the W . M . on his retirement from the chair . " A candidate was proposed for initiation at the next meeting , and the lodge was closed .

For the first time , in the history of the lodge , it fell in with the practice of inviting ladies , which has become a recent innovation in Masonry , ratified under dispensation by Grand Lodge , which permits the brethren to dine in Masonic clothing in the presence of their visitors . There are two modes in which ladies can be invited , either to a ball or dinner . Many lodges have had an annual ball which gives pleasure to the younger 1 idies , but to the elder ladies and old brethren who have passed their three score and ten years , who are beyond the dancing age , and care not to be mere wallflowers , the ball is not

appreciated , and some tew lodges have commenced to invite ladies to their dinner , and the Worshipful Master of this ludge , Bro . James smith , taking the views of the brethren , determined upon a ladies' invitation dinner , and the result was very succes-ful . We may here mention , however , that this old lodge , established in 17 S 9 , has made vigorous progress of late years by initiations and joinings . The lady guests were recived in the lodge room , and inspected the old banners of the lodge , the lodge album of portraits ot the members , and were very curious to know the

meaning and uses of the three chairs , lights , working tools , tesselated pavement , and other furniture of the lodge , which were discreetly avoided by the brethren . There is , however , policy in familiarising the lady members of our families with some of our gatherings ; they thus entertain a more favourable opinion of Masonry , find that we are not selfishly inclined , and learn to appreciate our Masonic Charities , and that monarchs , princes , and clergymen would not participate in our rites , if we were not reverent to our Creator , loyal to our sovereign , and true to our creed of " brotherly love , relief , and truth . "

The whole arrangements at the dinner were well carried out . The Worshipful Master , in proposing the loyal toasts , " The Queen and the Craft , " " The M . W . G . M . " and "The Ladies , " acquitted himself admirably . The health of the ladies was responded to briefly and well by the youngest initiate , Bro . Houlder ,

The harmony of the evening was ably contributed to by the brethren present , and by the charming daughters of the Treasurer , Bro . Cohu , who brought quite a bevy oi beauty in these and his wife . The lady guests on leaving were presented with a pleasing memento from the lod £ « in a pretty basket with a bird sitting on its eggs , packed in a neat cardboard box which looked as if they were carrying away the lodge ashlars .

Kennington Lodge ( No . 13 S 1 ) . —The annual installation of this prosperous lodge was held at the Horns Hotel , Kennington , on Tuesday , the 5 th inst . j when there was a large attendance . M . on his retirement from the chair .
