who would rather every Masonic book and periodical were burnt than that a word about our doings should appear in print . But they constitute only a very small minority , the bulk of the brethren becoming daily more and more curious to read about our history and customs , and the patronage of all kinds of Masonic literature being commensurately greater . Apart from

the knowledge which it would be an act of disloyalty to his obligation for a Mason to divulge , there is a mass of Masonic literature which they who wish may read , and Bro . PARKER is probably not far out in his reckoning when he sets down the number ot works in which the object and

DISTRICT GRAND LODGE OF THE PUNJAB .

A Special Communication of the District Grand Lodge of the Punjab was held at Freemasons' Hall , Lahore , on Thursday , the 27 th December last . Bro . E . Woodall Parker , Dist . G . M ., presided , and among those present were Bros . Col , Oswald Menzies , D . D . G . M . ; Capt . R . F . Castellan , P . D . J . G . W .. as D . S . G . VV . ; Major J . G . Kelley , as D . J . G . W . ; the

Rev . H . J . Spence Grey , as D . G . Chap . ; Dr . B . Lall Ghose , D . G . Treas . ; P . C . Mukerji , as D . G . R . ; VV . Bull , acting D . G . Sec . ; D . A . Spankie , as D . S . G . G , Org . ; and others , including several visitors .

District Grand Lodge having been opened , the summons convening the meeting was read , and the roll of lodges called . Bro . Dr . BRIJ LALL GHOSK , P . D . D . G . M ., read a paper on '' Freemasonry and Brahminism , " in the course of which , the learned brother described and noted sundry

points of resemblance between our ceremony of initiation and that of candidates for acceptance into the mysteries oi Brahminism . The lecture was necessarily briel , but most interesting , and , as was afterwards pointed out , the points of resemblance demonstrated clearly enough the catholicity of Freemasonry .

Bro . Col . O . MENZIES , Dist . D . G . M ., also read a paper , compiled by Bro . H . J . Whymper , on ' Masonic Literature , " in which the lecturer , though he "had been invited to bi as brief in his remarks as possible , contrived to crowd a mass of most valuable inlormation , considerably more indeed than the average lecturer would have been able to impart in a paper of twice the length . Bro . Whymper classified Masonic literature

according to the subjects with which the several works comprised in it dealt , and laid particular stress on the value of particular works ; but especially on Calcott ' s "Candid Disquisition , " Preston ' s " Illustrations , and Hutchinson ' s " Spirit of Masonry . " He also referred at length to the subject of Masonic jurisprudence , and pointed out the difficulties with which any brother must be confronted who should undertake the compilation 01

such a work . He laid considerable stress , however , on the necessity ' < " " having a standard work on this subject written , and was pleased to express approval of the design ot" the Freemason to undertake it . He was also pleased to speak in favourable terms of Kennin ^' s " Cyclopreiia ot Freemasonry" as being about the most useful in that branch of literature .

When these papers had been read , , Tne DIST . G . MASTER delivered a short address , in which he thanked the authors of the lectures for their valuable contributions , and expressed a hope that other brethren would follow their example in the endeavour to disseminate Masonic knowledge . Dist . G . Lodge was closed , and the banquet followed .

M ., presided , and among those present were Bros . Col , Oswald Menzies , D . D . G . M . ; Capt . R . F . Castellan , P . D . J . G . W .. as D . S . G . VV . ; Major J . G . Kelley , as D . J . G , Org . ; and others , including several visitors .
