M . said in tendering "Hearty good wishes" for the province , he had to express with pleasure the excellent vyay the ceremony of installation had been gone through , vvhich vvas very creditable indeed to all concerned , and seeing all the lodges in VVe tmorland had promised to raise 50 guineas to the Royal Mason c

Benevolent Institution , he had no doubt Sun , Square , and Compasses would do the same . Bro . Cant , VV . M . said it should have the first consideration , and he had no doubt of the issue , it was a very commendable one . He was also much pleased that liro . McKay had honoured the old lodge 119 , vvith his lirst visit .

With " Hearty good wishes from other visitors present the lodge vvas closed , and about Go adjourned to Bro . Cowans , Globe Hotel , where an excellent banquet vvas served . Bro . Dalrymple , P . G . Sec , replied . The toast of the evening vvas ably proposed by Bro . Ban * , vvho said perhaps in the long history of the lodge perhaps no brother had displayed more energy than Bro . Cant had for the good of the lodge and Masonry , vvhich

vvas well known to all , and his year of office would be a successful one . Bro . Briefly replied , and said he had had his eye on the chair of the lodge for a long time , and every effort would be used to further the interests of the Craft ; good candidates , and plenty of them , and the work would have every

care . " The Installing Master " and " The Visiting Brethren " were proposed and responded to , and vvith a few capital songs a pleasant evening vvas spent .

CROYDON . Mozart Chapter ( No . 1929 ) . —A meeting of this chapter vvas held at the Greyhound Hotel , on the 20 th ult ., when there vvere present Comps . H . H . Shirley , M . A ., P . P . A . G . S ., M . E . Z . ; James Castello , H . elect ; Major T . VV . Richardson , P . / .. 141 , J . elect ; Capt . T . C . Walls , P . Z ., S . E . ; and H . J . Lardner , PA / ., P . P . G . S . Felix Weiss , First Principal elect , it became necessary to obtain a dispensation to enable Comp . J . Castello , H . elect , to be also

installed as Fust Principal . IheG . Superintendent had granted such dispensation . Comp . Shirley then impressively inducted Comp . J . Castello as H . and M . E . Z . ; he also installed Comp . Mark Masonry .

Grand Stewards Lodge . —A very pretty and interesting meeting of the members of this lodge vvas held on Monday , the 4 th inst ., under the presidency of the W . M ., Bro . Frederick VV . Driver , P . G . Steward . The Masonic business of the lodge , vvhich vvas conducted at Mark Masons' Hall , vvas but lightly attended , the lodge

having but little to do—merely the election of officers for the ensuing year . Bro . John Tonkins vvas chosen W . M ., Bro . VV . C . Gilles , Treasurer , and Bro . Mills , Tyler , after which Bro . Hogard proposed , and Bro . Middleton seconded , the presentation of a Past Alaster ' s jewel to Bro . F . VV . Driver .

I his disposed of the business of the lodge , and the pleasure vvas adjourned to the Mitre , Hampton Court , to vvhich place the brethren , accompanied by ladies , journeyed b y South-Western Railway . At the Mitre , they found one of the choicest of banquets provided by Bro . Sadler , the proprietor , to vvhich they speedily sat down , the company comprising the following brethren and ladies : Bro . F . VV . Driver , VV . M ., Mrs . Barnato , Bro . and Mrs . Hugo

Warner , Bro . Thomas Beard , Mr . Acworth and neice , Bro . Kift , Bro . Barrow , Bro . James and Mrs . Boulton , Bro . and Mrs . Edwards , Bro . and Mrs . Von Joel , Bros . Harry Tipper , Adam Pringle , Biddlecombe , John Barnett , Major Probyn , Ramsay , C . H . Driver , Bro ., Mrs ., and Miss Matier , and Bros . C . F . Hogard and H . Massey . The efforts of the brethren to make the meeting enjoyable resulted in an eminent success . Aided by beautiful

weather , the arrangements vvere perfect ; plenty of space had been provided for seating the party ; the ventilation of the dining room vvas ample , and an elegant display of ( lowers and fruit gave a finish to the table vvhich vvas highly agreeable . The W . M . had , as hc told the company in proposing the first toast of "The Oueen and Mark Masonry , " made up his mind to make no long speeches , and he afterwards showed that he meant what he said . He did not want the

party to be in a hurry by so saying , but short speeches gave a better opportunity for thc enjoyment of music This disposed of the first toast , and then followed that of "The Prince of VVales , " with vvhich he embodied that of "The Grand Ofiicers . " It was impossible on account of the high position the Prince of Wales for his Royal Highness to assist much in the working of Mark Masonry , but it had the prestige of his name . But the Grand Officers did

all that vvas incumbent on them , and they maintained the dignity of the nobis Order . Bro . C . F . Matier , G . Sec , who vvas asked to respond , said that the toast meant the continued prosperity of the Mark Degree—a congratulation on its prosperity in the past and the present , and a wish for its prosperity in the future . The Grand Ofiicers of the past as well as those of the present had endeavoured to achieve this object , and if they waited

till the luck came round ( to quote the words of the song they had just heard so well rendered by Bro . Kift ) they would lind the Grand Officers of the future no less anxious to insure equal prosperity . Bro . C . F . Hogard , in proposing "The W . M ., " which , he said , except one thereafter to be presented , vvas the toast of the evening , observed that Bro . Matier had referred to the hopes entertained that Mark Masonrv would

flourish as it had flourished . Members of the Grand Stewards' Lodge echoed that hope , because the success of Mark Masonry having in some measure been due to the Grand Stewards' efforts , thc Grand Stewards' Lodge , vvhich consisted only of brethren who were or had been Grand Stewards , was a lit memorial of those vvho struggled in past times to bring what they know to be a genuine and ancient Degree to the front . The Grand Stewards' Lodge , like other lodges , must have a W . M ., and that principal

Mark Masonry.

officer vvas novv represented by as worthy and excellent a brother as ever lived , Bro . Fred . W . Driver . Bro . Driver had done admirable work in Masonry generally , he would never have been a Grand Steward if he had not , and he certainly would not have been a member of the Grand Stewards' Lodge . He hoped the brethren—and ladies would by the enthusiasm vvith vvhich they greeted this toast testify Ihe pleasure they had in the attainment by Bro .

Driver to the high position he held . The Worshipful Master , after the toast had been most cordially drunk , said he felt extremely pleased that the company had honoured the toast so enthusiastically . With regard to the position he held as W . M . of the Grand Stewards' Lodge , they mu . t bear in mind that the motto of the lodge vvas play and no work . A Grand Stewards' Lodge could have no work whatever , because as no one could be a

member unless he vvas or had been a Grand Steward he must be a Mark Mason before he vvas a Grand Steward . There could be no M isonic ceremony in the lodge , and therefore the Master could have no work to do beyond opening and closing his lodge . But the position of Master vvas one of rank and dignity .. During his year he had had nothing to do , not forgetting this , however , that he had had to preside at the banquet table , and he trusted they would

consider he had performed that office well . Bro . Driver then proposed " The Visitors , " and coupled vvith the toast the names of Bro . Thomas Beard , and of Bro . C . H . Driver , his ( the W . M . ' s ) brother , vvho held high positions in Masonry , and vvas a thoroughly good brother at heart . The W . M . supplemented the proposition of this toast vvith a recitation , the composition selected being one of his own— " A noble soul , or the fight of life . "

Bro . C . H . Driver , in reply , congratulated the W . M . on the success of the Grand Stewards' Lodge , and heartily thanked him for the invitation vvhich had caused him to spend a very pleasant evening . Bro . Thos . Beard , C . C , also responded . The evening had been a most pleasant one , and though he had been at the lodge meetings several times before he hoped he might have the opportunity of coming again .

The VVorshipful Master next proposed " The Mark Benevolent Fund , " vvhich vvas established to do good to those in distressed circumstances . The Grand Mark Benevolent Fund had come forward in a way to be praised . To Mark Masons who had benevolence at heart , and to ladies who participated in that feeling , he would only say that the Fund vvas greatly in need of Stewards for the next festival .

Bro . C . F . Matier replied , and appealed for assistance for the Fund . The imperial Charities of the Craft had already received more than £ 90 , 000 this year , consequentl y the pockets of the brethren had been pretty well dipped into , almost depleted . Where the Mark Benevolent Fund was going to be replenished he did not know . Mark Masons had already given in a most free and hearty manner . The

festival would be held on the 20 th inst . vvith Sir Reginald Hanson in the chair . He hoped the brethren would come to that festival and bring ladies vvith them to support Sir Reginald Hanson . What the fund had to give away it gave freely and voluntarily , and he hoped the brethren would support it . Bro . Barnett responded to the toast of "The Ladies , " and shortly afterwards the brethren returned to town .

Broadbent , Kirkconel , Richardson , Wilkinson , Annison , and Bradley . The D . P . G . M . said in tendering "Hearty good wishes" for the province , he had to express with pleasure the excellent vyay the ceremony of installation had been gone through , vvhich vvas very creditable indeed to all concerned , and seeing all the lodges in VVe tmorland had promised to raise 50 guineas to the Royal Mason c

Provincial Meetings.

Mark Masonry.

M ., and that principal

officer vvas novv represented by as worthy and excellent a brother as ever lived , Bro . Fred . W . Driver .
