In reply , Bro . Denney , W . M ., thanked the brethren for the hearty reception they had given him . His best efforts

would be put forth to promote the prosperity of the lodge , and , with the assistance and co-operation of his oflicers and the brethren , he hoped when his year of office had expired to hand to his successor the charter of the lodge as unsullied as he had received it . "The Officers of the Lodge " followed , Bro . Vaile , S . W ., stating that the W . M . had so recently been removed frpm the ranks of the officers that he needed no assurance from them of the interest which they had in the lodge . Thby would loyally do all in their power to . maintain the ancient traditions of the Lodge of Loyalty for good work and

goodfellowship . Bro . Wilkinson , J . W ., also responded . The Tyler ' s toast brought a highly successful and enjoyable evening to a close . The musical arrangements were under the direction of Bro . VV . E . Dipple , assisted by Bros . C . H , Halford , J . R . Large , F . Small , T . Jones , A . J . Clark , and Mr . T . Shears .

Duke of Cornwall Lodge ( No . 1839 ) . — Last Saturday evening witnessed a most agreeable assemblage of the brethren of the above lodge to do honour to the installation of a W . C ., formally placed Bro . W . H . Foot in the chair of the lodge . Bro . Culver was invested

as I . P . M ., and the other appointments and investitures were conferred on Bros . VV . H . Lowry , S . W . ; C . Mussared , J . W . ; T . C . Corpe , P . M ., Treas . ; J . VV . Dewsnap . P . Bro . Culver was presented in lodge with a handsome Past Master ' s jewel .

After the banquet which followed the working of the lodge , a musical entertainment was given by the Lyric Vocal Quartette—Messrs . Bailey , David James , Arthur Butlin , " and Holden Walker—with Madame Evans-Warwick and Bro . Walter Perrins , who had the direction of the music . Bro . Culver proposed "The Health of the W . M ., " describing Bro . Foot as 3 brother whose one motive was to

further the interests of the Duke of Cornwall Lodge . He said his duties would be carried out with ability and to the satisfaction of the brethren—an example he hoped would be imitated by all who followed in Bro . Foot ' s wake . In such a ludge as that it was a pleasure to know that there were so many brethren who would discharge their duties in a faithful and honourable manner . Bro . Foot , W . M ., in the course of his reply , which was

a graceful acknowledgement of the hearty reception given to the toast , said when he saw so many old triends who were initiated about the same time . as he was , it was a pleasure to find that but few had fallen out of the ranks . He should do all in his power to bring credit to tbe lodge . Having been initiated in it , he never accepted office in another ; he wa < like the man in " H . M . S . Pinafore "he would " remain an Englishman " to the end of his . days . Intending to do that he thought he could not go very far

wrong . Bro . Foot , in giving thc toast of "The I . P . M ., Bro . Culver , " referred , as an evidence of the admirable way in which the subject of the toast had performed his duties , to the balance-sheet , and to the complete unity and accord which prevailed in thc lodge , and to the performance of the ceremonies , amongst which he might mention the three raisings of that evening and the installation .

Bro . Culver , I . P . M ., replied , and spoke with gratification of the kindness and support which had been extended to him by the brethren of the lodge . Bros , the Rev . W . Taylor Jones , P . M . 1 S 1 , Davison , and Philips replied to the toast of " The Visitors , " and Bros . Williams , Cattermole , Bladon , and Cox responded to the toast of " Ihe Past Masters . " In the absence of Bro . Corpe , Treas ., who had been

obliged to leave for Brighton , Bro . Dewsnap , P . M ., Sec , replied to thc toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary . " He was the sole representative present of those who originally formed the lodge , Bros . Cooke and Corpe having left . He had viewed witn great pleasure the progress the lodge had made under successive Worshipful Masters . The W . M . possessed great power in building up the success of the lodge , and he had looked with infinite delight on the

success which had crowned the efforts of thc Masters of the Duke of Cornwall Lodge . The power of the other officers was only limited , but still , they could all do something in the same direction as the W . M ., and he had had great satisfaction in contributing his small quota to assist in promoting the good of Masonry . The toast of " The Ollieers" having been proposed and responded to , a hearty drinking of the Tyler ' s toast , which was given by Bro . Bowler , closed ths proceedings .

Bedford , Treasurer . The lodge having been duly closed , the brethren

adjourned to the banqueting-room , where they sat down to supper , under the presidency of the W . M ., Bro . A . J . Carpenter . ¦ - '" The customary loyal toasts were honoured , when Bro . W . Gill , P . M ., P . P . G . D . of C , proposed " The Worshipful Master . " Twelve months ago Bro . Carpenter , he said , was elected W . M ., and the brethren had the fullest confidence in him , believing that he would reflect credit

upon the lodge and upon himself , and the manner in which Bro . Carpenter had carried out the duties of his office proved plainly that their confidence in him was not misplaced . Bro . Carpenter had , in fact , done all he could to further the interests of the lodge and promote the happiness of the members . Unanimity characterised the work of the Burrell Lodge . They had that evening shown unanimity in the election of their Worshipful Master and

Treasurer , and this unanimity of feeling in the lodge during the past year had never been excelled . Bro . Carpenter had won , or rather he had retained , the respec : and high esteem of the brethren . Before their next meeting their W . M . would celebrate his silver wedding , and thebrethren were anxious that on such an auspicious occasion they should express their respect for their W . M . in some tangible form . He therefore had pleasure in calling upon

their S . VV . to address the brethren . Bro . J . Flinn said it was his pleasing duty to make a presentation , on behalf of the brethren , to their W . M . Every member of the Burrell Lodge warmly appreciated the excellent work shown by B > o . Carpenter as W . M ., and also the manner in which he had carried out the duties of other offices he had filled . They all wished most heartily that Bro . Carpenter and his good wife would live for many

years to look upon the testimonial , and to realise the good feeling and friendship of the brethren of the Burrell Lodge . He had great pleasure in presenting the vV . M with a silver tea service and an illuminated address , thc latter the excellent work of a member of the lodge , Bro . H . W . Butler . The address , read by Bro . H . Cheal , P . M ., acting Secretary , was as follows : " Presented , with a silver tea service , to VV . Bro . Alfred Joshua Carpenter and Mrs . Carpenter ,

in commemoration of their silver wedding day , September 24 th , 1893 , by the Burrell Lodge of Freemasons , No . 1829 . Tnis happy event occurring during W . Bro . Carpenter ' s year of office as W . M ., the brethren , in presenting this token of their esteem , heartily wish him and his wife long life and happiness . Signed on behalf of the brethren and Committee , Bro . J . Flinn , S . W ., Chairman ; _ Bro . H . VV . Bedford , Treasurer ; and Bro . T . Shrivell , Secretary . "

Bro . W . Gill , remarking that uptvards of so members of the lodge had subscribed to the testimonial , said he was sure Mrs . Carpenter would be gratified . He was , however , afraid that wives did nut realise the sublimity of Freemasonry , feeling that Masonic banquets induced their husbands to lightly appreciate home catering . Mrs . Carpenter would now have golden opinions of Freemasonry , and would not only urge Bro . Carpenter to

show increased zeal in his Masonic duties , but would do her best to induce him . to join two or three other lodges . He then asked the brethren to drink heartily the toast of " The W . M . and Mrs . Carpenter . " The toast was received with enthusiasm . The VV . M ., on rising to respond , was warmly applauded . He said he had never in his life felt more difficulty in responding to a toast , and words failed him in attempting

to adequately thank the brethren for their great kindness to him . Since he had become a Mason he had experienced the motive , power of Freemasonry—brotherly love—on all hands and from all the brethren of the Burrell Lodge , but he had never thought of being the recipient of such kindness as that shown him that evening . lie had endeavoured to do his duty as W . M . of the Burrell Lodge , and had met with nothing but brotherly love . The present to his dear

wife and himself would be highly yarned , and when , in time to come , they used the tea service they would not forget the esteem and brotherly love which had prompted such a handsome presentation . During the evening an impromptu musical programme was sus'ained by several of the brethren present . Master Ffennell also contributed a piccolo solo . Bro . W . N . Roe , P . P . G . Org ., carried out the duties of accompanist with great success .

BROUGHTON . St . Thomas Lodge ( No . 992 ) . —The regular meeting was held on Wednesday , the 6 th instant , at the Griffin Hotel . The following were present : Bros . W . Hawkins , W . M . ; W . C . Royle , S . VV . ; T . W . McGill , J . W . ; J . Hancock , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B ., Treas . ; J . W . Millward , P . M ., Sec ; W . H . Southern , LP . M . ; T . M . Johnson , S . D . ; W . characteristics which were most requisite for the efficient discharge of the duties of the important office to which he had that night been appoiited . He ( Bro . Rose ) congratulated the brethren upon their choice of the W . M ., and , in the name < jf the lodge , he assured Bro . Denney that he should be loyally supported during his term of office .

In asking the company to honour the next toast— " The Instilling Master "—ttre W . M . said VraA . Bto . Rose had , by his unfailing courtesy , endeared himself to the brethren of

the Loyalty Lodge . No words of his were necessary to commend the toast to the hearty acceptance of the brethren . The working during the past year had been excellent , and " ro . Rose on retiring from the chair of the Loyalty Lodge carried with him the very best wishes of its members for his future happiness . Uro . Rose , LP . M-., in reply , tendered his warm thanks to the brethren for the kindness and forbearance which had been shown to him during his year of office . He had done

j '' that he was able to do to maintain the prestige of the lod ge . Whatever may have been his shortcomings in regard to the ritual he was proud to know that at any rate Jie could hand over to his successor untarnished and unbroken the noble heritage of a loyal and united lodge . . ' The Initiate" next claimed the attention of the brethren / ' the W . M . giving Bro . Ellis a hearty welcome , and trusting that he might long be spared to remain a '" ember of the Loyalty Lodge .

M ., Sec , replying in his able manner , and giving interesting statistics respecting the Institutions . " The Past Masters of the Lodge" received a warm welcome , Bros . J . Hattersley , C . H . Halford , A . J . Clark , and W . F . Darnell ably replying .

T . Shears .

M . ; W . C .
